APRIL IS NATIONAL LAWN AND GARDEN MONTH
By Trey Collier
April is National Lawn and Garden month! This gives you a wonderful reason to get outside and
get your backyard and garden ready. Whether you are starting from scratch or are an experienced
pro, here are several tips that you can use to celebrate Lawn and Garden month in style!
Consider Backyard Composting - Composting is nature’s process of recycling decomposed
organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Backyard composting is an acceleration
of the process that occurs in nature. It is recycling at its finest! Use kitchen waste (such as
food or paper towels), lawn clippings and wood chips to provide rich and powerful soil for your
garden and lawn. Anything that was once living will decompose, giving you endless options for
composting. Composting is good for your plants and for you! Adding organic materials to the soil
improves moisture retention. It provides a balanced, slow-release source of nutrients that helps
the soil hold nutrients long enough for plants to use them. Healthier plants means a healthier you!
It will also save you money because you will no longer have to buy fertilizer. Add a compost bin
to your garden and start today!
Add a fountain - Outdoor fountains offer an easy and affordable way to add style to your lawn or
garden. The soothing sound of running water will help to create a tranquil and relaxing escape
from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Transform your garden into your own personal
paradise!
Consider adding variety - If you are fond of flower gardening, venture into edible vegetables!
You will be thrilled with the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed your family
fresh, healthy produce that you grew on your own. Beans, squash, cucumbers, lettuce/greens,
tomatoes, peppers, beets and garlic are all great vegetables to start with. They are relatively
easy to maintain and will offer beautiful variety. If you are already growing your own vegetables,
consider planting an eye catching flower garden (try marigold, lupine, daisy or wildflower mix
seeds). Fruits are also a great option. Apples, figs, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are
great for beginners. Variety is the spice of life!
Go high-tech - Modern technology impacts our daily life. Why not let it impact your backyard?
There are several innovations in outdoor living that you will wonder how you ever lived without.
The Robomower will make mowing your lawn virtually effortless. No more back-breaking work
and labor intensive afternoons spent cutting grass. You simply install special sensors around the
perimeter of your yard and push a button. It doesn’t get much easier than that! Another product
worth trying is the Mosquito Eliminator. Gone are the days of tacky bug zappers and pesky
insects at parties. It is so beautiful that your guests will never guess that it is fighting mosquitoes
and other pests. The Eliminator uses high-tech black light technology to cover up to 1,000 feet
PLANTING THE RIGHT TREE
IN THE RIGHT PLACE
CenterPoint Energy understands that the responsible planting of trees
is a way to care for our environment and beautify our community, yet
we are also committed to the safe and reliable delivery of electricity.
Our professional tree pruning program is integrated into our daily
operations to help make this possible. Trees that grow close to
CenterPoint Energy’s electrical poles and lines will be pruned by a
professional tree trimming company under contract with CenterPoint
Energy. Any vegetation greater than 10 feet in height will be removed
from high-voltage transmission line rights-of-way.
Palm trees growing near power lines create unique issues. Unlike
other trees, palms grow in a straight, vertical line, with a single
growing point at the top of the tree. Because of this single-growth
point, normal pruning techniques are not effective. With most trees,
crews are able to direct the growth away from power lines using proper
pruning techniques, but growth of palm trees cannot be redirected.
If you choose to include palm trees in your landscape, CenterPoint
Energy recommends a planting distance of 20 - 40 feet to reduce the
risk of windblown fronds contacting power lines. Consumers should
plant palm trees far enough away from power lines that no part of the
tree ever grows within 10 feet of the line.
CenterPoint Energy encourages you to plant the “Right Tree in the
Right Place” by thinking about the mature height of a tree and its
distance from power lines before planting. For more information on
safe planting practices and a list of power line-friendly trees, visit
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests
that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is
trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend
a little more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your
mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side.
This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate
termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12” - 18”
back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide
around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as
long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite
infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or
(especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates
overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of
summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer,
prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off
to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch in
its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here
are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and more
drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
NEW LOGO
On Friday, Feb. 19 th , Fulshear High School Principal
Daniel Ward revealed the logo for the newest Lamar
CISD high school - Fulshear High School. “We wanted
something different from the other District mascots,”
Ward said. “I think we’ve hit the mark.” The new logo
will set an identity for the campuses noting that Leaman
Junior High will have the same mascot. “From grades
six through 12, these kids will be Chargers,” Ward said. “We are one. Once
a Charger, always a Charger.”
The logo, featuring a fierce horse, with a body that tails off into a lightning bolt,
was designed by a graphic artist. Ward, Leaman Principal Mike Semmler,
Oschler Flemming, Fulshear High’s athletic coordinator and Socorro Torres,
Ward’s administrative assistant, took part in the process of finalizing the logo.
“This is actually the fifth or sixth version,” he said. “But this one really pops!”
Ward said spirit wear will be available in May.
Two advanced Briscoe JH art students have sketched, painted and generated
creative marvels to become finalists in this year’s Bayou City Art Festival. Lia
Castillo and Briana Creery, both 8 th graders at Briscoe, will compete with 300
other Houston-area art pieces.
“This contest is an extension of the adult art show, Bayou City Art Festival.
This festival brings in artists from all over the U.S. The middle school contest
was open to Houston and surrounding communities. For our students to have
won two finalist place in this group is amazing,” said BJH art teacher, Audrey
Fuege. With history in various other art competitions students compete, this
is only the second year anyone from Briscoe has entered this contest and
the first time students will be featured. “We are very proud of our two Briscoe
students and can’t wait to see how they compete in this festival,” Fuege said.
DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just
to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning
from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501
Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it
is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our
director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find
out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare
two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always
a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular
show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900
and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get
together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call
the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.
Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and
if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please
call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website, www.Decibelles.org.
GRACE NOTES
Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes”
a performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement
homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community events. We sing
a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once
a month on Sunday morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC.
We rehearse during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at
St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also our
“outing” days to perform in the community. Come and join this fun and
wonderful music ministry. Please contact Gail Shipley at 281-782-1598 or
OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for
the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor
training every other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers
lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose
of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of
any foreign language, nor do they need formal teaching experience. We
offer many locations for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called
“Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior
citizens (over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit
from a daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about
the same time and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask,
“Are you OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the
participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just
temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. If the call goes
unanswered, the computer will call back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If
there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police.
They will have with them a print out of information on the person that is
not responding to the calls. This program was established by FBC Sheriff
Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens
participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for
citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this
free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies,
registered and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of
restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of
all residents, please use all precautions with your pets and keep them
on leashes when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL
YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming freely in the
neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at 281-342-1512. Even if you
recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it, as you do not know
how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner.
Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
ATTENTION!
PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your
pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with
a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the
most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community.
