GRAYSON LAKES GARAGE SALE
Would you like to participate in the Spring Garage sale? Check out
the website for details. http://graysonlakesliving.com/.
GRAYSON LAKES WEBSITE
Yes, Grayson Lakes has a Facebook page and a Nextdoor page, but
remember the official way your Board of Directors communicates
with you is thru the Grayson Lakes website:
http://graysonlakesliving.com/.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
Please be a good neighbor - keep the sidewalks clear of vehicles,
check for low hanging tree branches and overgrown shrubs near
the sidewalks, clean up after your pets, put yard waste at the curb
only the night before and remove garbage cans from visible sight except for
trash days. The trash service includes pickup from your garage, so only yard
waste needs to be placed at the curb.
SHARE YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
Do you have an expertise you could share? We are always in need
of professional advice from our homeowners. Please let Lisa Presley
at Crest Management know if you’d be willing to be on an advisory
panel for ad hoc advice (e.g. communications, architect, horticulturalist,
finance, etc..)
IT’S YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
If you have an hour to spare each month to help improve your
neighborhood, consider volunteering for one of the following: Budget
Committee, Communications Committee, Events Committee,
Lakes & Irrigation Committee, Landscape Committee and Safety & Security
Committee. If any of these interest you, please contact Lisa Presley at lisa.
FT. BEND COUNTY - LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all
our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an
animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary
for that person. Many children are afraid of animals and
become frightened, which could result in the child getting
hurt trying to avoid the animal. Although most dog bites
occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained or
free-roaming dogs do pose a threat to the public. In addition,
unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by
rabies-infected wildlife.
To make a complaint or report an animal that is not properly
restrained please contact Ft. Bend County Animal Control -
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate
a great many pests that die from various causes while
in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to
your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc…
Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future
pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the
top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will
aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and
accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants
at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create
a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home.
The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab
as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The
most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings,
growing high against your homes exterior or (especially)
ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring
spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing
trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual
pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer,
prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts
your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
PRESENT THIS COUPON TO YOUR SUPERVISOR FOR HUGE SAVINGS!
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment
to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If
your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some
important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c)
weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more
- then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper,
stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST!
Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to
set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you
know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter?
We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep
our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to
share the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter
prevention messages with your elementary school students so
that they learn good habits from an early age.
Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our
environment, elementary school students from across Texas can
submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for
the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged
based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention
message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal,
composition and age appropriateness.
Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create
the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned
to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with
Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated
by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork
will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep
Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep
Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media announcements and
through other means as appropriate.
6 April 2016 Grayson Lakes

Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the
top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift
card. See Official Contest Rules for more information.
Everything you’ll need to participate including fact sheets, official
rules and the contest entry form and agreement is posted
at DontMessWithTexas.org. You can also download a flyer to
display at your school to generate interest.
The contest is through April 8, 2016. All entries must be submitted
or postmarked on or before April 8, 2016. Winners will be
announced in early May.
Contact Keep Texas Beautiful at 1-800-Clean-Up or info@ktb.
DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your
talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday
morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement
Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner.
Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided
a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton
and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you
are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years.
We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show
with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props,
narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled
“Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every
decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get
together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment,
call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a
program of sheer delight.
Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love
to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted.
For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit
our website, www.Decibelles.org.
GRACE NOTES
Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the
“Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the
elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities
and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic
and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday
morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse
during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St.
Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also
our “outing” days to perform in the community. Come and join
this fun and wonderful music ministry. Please contact Gail Shipley
at 281-782-1598 or gshipnote@live.com for more information.
BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND
OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to be a tutor for the Literacy
Council! The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County holds tutor training every
other month. After 12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to
teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to adults.
The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile lesson plans, learn about
various tutoring techniques, understand the purpose of the Literacy Council
and much more. Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor
do they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring
throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions are offered
during the day and at night. If you are interested in impacting someone’s life by
being their tutor, please contact the Literacy Council at 281-240-8181 or visit the
website at www.ftbendliteracy.org. Help us to “Change Lives Through Literacy!”
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program called “Are
You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated call intended for senior citizens
(over 55) and disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a daily
check. A computer will generate a call each morning, at about the same time
and the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After
this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes out of town
or leaves the residence for any time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and resubscribe
when you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back
3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the Sheriff will dispatch
a deputy or the local police. They will have with them a print out of information
on the person that is not responding to the calls. This program was established
by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s
Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. Many police chiefs in the county are
also participating in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for
citizens of their community. To request more information or to enroll in this free
and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
