NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY GARDEN CLUB (NCGC)
On Thursday, April 7, 2016, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) will
feature Darrin Duling, Director of Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens,
presenting the program “It’s a Wonderful World - Finials and Follies: A Look
at Architectural Garden Features from Around the World.”
Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month from
September through May. Meet and greet time begins at 9:30 AM and the
program will begin at 10 AM, followed by the NCGC business meeting. Please
join us at the Municipal Utility Building #81 at 805 Hidden Canyon Drive,

We welcome all people interested in gardening and gardening
related topics. We serve the West Houston and Katy areas. You do not have
to live in the Nottingham Country neighborhood to belong to our group!
NCGC is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Houston Federation of
Garden Clubs, the Texas State Garden Clubs and the National Federation
of Garden Clubs. The purpose of the club is to promote the beautification of
our community, support local and national educational and civic organizations
and educate the community about our environment. Donations from
the NCGC are funded by our annual Spring Plant Sale and various projects
throughout the year.
LOCAL JAM SESSIONS
If you like to play a musical instrument and/or sing with other musicians, we
encourage you to join us on Friday nights, except the first Friday of the
month, from 6 to 8 PM at a local Katy location. (No charge and non-profit.)
We play on acoustic instruments, such as: guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many
pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’
mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites,
etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future
pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes

exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing
pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite
inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants
at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to
create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your
home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to
the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the
slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover
plantings, growing high against your homes exterior
or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring
spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing
trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual
pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer,
prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts
your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment
to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your
lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important
fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain
or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper,
stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!

Magician Chad Chesmark performed at Odessa Kilpatrick Elementary
School’s annual Bluebonnet Bash. In order to attend
the Bluebonnet Bash, students must read eight books from the
Texas Library Association’s current list of books nominated to
receive the Texas Bluebonnet Award.
NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY ELEMENTARY CARNIVAL
The 2016 Nottingham Country Elementary (NCE) Carnival is
coming on April 8 th , from 5 PM-8:30 PM. Everyone is invited,
free of charge, to “travel around the world in a day!” The event
will celebrate diversity, which is NCE’s theme for the 2015-2016
school year and will be sprinkled with aerospace references,
because no one can appreciate the unity of humanity better
than an astronaut!
Carnival is one of two annual fundraisers for NCE and typically
attracts thousands of Katy residents and their families. It will take
place at the NCE campus, 20500 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, Texas.
Entertainment will include many games and rides, including the
return of the Gmax (by popular demand) and the introduction of
The Big Baller, a giant obstacle course featuring four huge, red,
inflatable balls surrounded by a blue ball pit resembling a moat
filled with water. In the food and beverage department, NCE
will be offering a sampling of culinary delights from around the
world! Chick-Fil-A also returns this year, along with the Chick-
Fil-A cow. Pizza and Tutti Frutti for dessert also will be available.
Young attendees will enjoy the Petting Zoo and Trackless Train and
every guest can replenish their supplies of gear at the Carnival
General Store. Kids of all ages can capture photos with their
friends in the Photo Booth. Kids are invited to wear multi-cultural
attire to the Carnival - as a reminder to everyone that diversity is
interesting and beautiful! Everyone is encouraged to wear their
dancing shoes (sneakers count) and participate in our Carnival
Dance Contest. Prizes for 1 st and 2 nd place will be awarded!
Don’t forget the Silent Auction, bound to tantalize with themed
baskets from each NCE class, as well as parties and the everpopular
5 th grade basketball game. Previous auctions have
included a weekend getaway in a Galveston condo! Stay tuned
to NCE’s Facebook page for details on this year’s auction items!

AWARD WINNING PRESENTATION ON KEEPING

The PTA’s of Beck Junior High, Beckendorff Junior High and Seven
Lakes Junior High partnered to showcase the award winning
presentation “Keeping You and Your Family Safe Online--Public
& Permanent.” The presentation, created by Richard Guerry, focused
on the reasonable use of technology and internet safety.
This program received the 2010 & 2011 Exemplary School
Safety Program Award by the School Safety Advocacy Council.
Mr. Guerry has appeared as an internet safety expert on CNN,
Radio Disney and MTV’s Thin Line Campaign. The event was
held at each junior high for students as well as a parent only
presentation in the evening.

LANGUAGES’ FARRINGTON CONTEST
Katy ISD had 26 students win awards at the 2016 Farrington
Contest and Awards, sponsored by the Houston Area Teachers
of Foreign Language. More than 200 Houston-area students
participated in the language competition and schools were allowed
to send three students from each language level. Participants
completed a language exam including reading, writing,
listening and speaking.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST!
Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to
set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you
know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We
need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our
environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share
the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention
messages with your elementary school students so that
they learn good habits from an early age.
Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our
environment, elementary school students from across Texas can
submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for
the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged
based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention
message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal,
composition and age appropriateness.
Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create
the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a
month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas
Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B
and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be
showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful
websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful
annual conference, in media announcements and through other
means as appropriate.
Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the
top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your
talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday
morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement
Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner.
Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided
a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton
and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you
are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years.
We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show
with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props,
narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled
“Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every
decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get
together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment,
call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a
program of sheer delight.

GRACE NOTES
Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the
“Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the
elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities
and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic
and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday
morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse
during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St.
Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings are also
our “outing” days to perform in the community. Come and join

RICHMOND ROSENBERG BOYS & GIRLS CLUB
On February 12 th , at the Richmond Rosenberg Boys & Girls Club, eighteen scholars
participated in a “What I’m Thankful For” Oratory Competition. The group
had worked for 4 weeks preparing their speeches under the guidance of Senior
Girl Scout Angela Lytle of Katy. This event was the first step in Lytle’s Gold Award
project to implement a Speech & Debate Club at the center.
TEXAS MASTER NATURALIST
The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership of 85
outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, chapter members have enjoyed learning
together and sharing their love of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of
a state-wide Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in 44
local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as of 2012! Statewide
TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted projects on approximately 195,700
acres of habitat while also developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive
trails. The Texas Master Naturalists program is sponsored by Texas Parks

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND
OUR STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to
be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of Fort
Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After 12
hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to teach
Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) classes
to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and compile
lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques, understand
the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more. Tutors do
not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do they need
formal teaching experience. We offer many locations for tutoring
throughout the area, including locations in Katy. Tutoring sessions
are offered during the day and at night. If you are interested in

RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program
called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated
call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons
who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer
will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and
the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you
OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If
the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any
time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when
you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call
back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer,
the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will
have with them a print out of information on the person that
is not responding to the calls. This program was established
by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken
Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998.
Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the
program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens
of their community. To request more information or to enroll in
this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property
to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed
and inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your
dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you
must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their
‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep
your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to
you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm
someone while it was ‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area
ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined
to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of
unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog
bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained
or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public.
In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being
bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws
is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts
to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY LESSONS
Houston Methodist Cinco Ranch Emergency Care Center hosted
12 girl scouts from junior level troops 152015 and 152011 and
nine parent chaperones on Saturday, Jan. 30 th . The young women
had the opportunity to tour the facility and receive hands-on
lessons regarding blood pressure testing, various pediatric treatments,

Join a non-profit club - free of charge. We meet every 3 rd
Wednesday of each month at Borders Bar & Grill Restaurant
(NE corner of Westgreen & I-10 in Katy). We post different water
trips and outdoor adventures on the Meet Up Group Website.
Don’t know if you prefer to canoe or kayak? Don’t buy something
just to buy it… try out different boats. These trips will help
you decide what you like or if you even like to paddle. We can
help! We have years of water sports adventures under our belts.

KATY CHRISTIAN WOMEN’S CONNECTION (KCWC)
Katy Christian Women’s Connection (KCWC) will be hosting our
Spring Luncheon on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at The Club at
Falcon Point, 24503 Falcon Point Dr, Katy. We will be hosting a
Spring Fashion Show presented by “The Walk In Closet,” which is

CARAMEL POPCORN WITH MARSHMALLOW
You could make this on National Caramel Popcorn Day April 6 th !
INGREDIENTS:
23 large marshmallows 2 cups brown sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®) 1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped
DIRECTIONS:
Cook and stir the marshmallows, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and vanilla extract
together in a pot over medium-low heat until the marshmallows are completely melted,
5 to 7 minutes.
Put the popcorn in a large bowl; pour the marshmallow mixture over the popcorn and

FRESH BLUEBERRY PIE
You could make this on National Blueberry Pie Day April 28 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
4 tablespoons lemon flavored Jell-O® mix 4 cups fresh blueberries
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
DIRECTIONS:
In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar and cornstarch. Pour in water and bring
to a full boil. Turn off heat and add in gelatin; stir until completely dissolved. Let cool.
When mixture is cooled fold in blueberries. Gently pour into the graham cracker crust.
Cover and refrigerate for about an hour or until ready to serve.
