“Do good things only. So when people talk about you and that they will, they 

can only talk about the good things you do.” This is the advice I shared with my 

students recently when we discussed our fears as a pre-reading activity. Students 

shared a variety of fears (some really funny ones): heights, dark, failure, 

COCKROACHES. I shared my fear: humans. When they asked why, I replied 

with: humans are unpredictable and that is scary. They are good to you one 

moment and the next minute you turn, they may say bad things about you. 

That led the discussion to: do good things only. Students that day also learned 

and agreed that people love to talk about people, especially talk not so great 

things. Middle school children have it tough; they honestly do. In this day and 

age when there is a plethora of access to excess, too much time is invested 

in the wrong things and efforts. Therefore, I encouraged my students to focus 

on doing good. This way when people will try to talk about them, others will 

quickly notice that, “hey! But you’re only saying good things about this person!”

VEGETABLE GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS 

You don’t need a green thumb to grow a bounty of fresh vegetables 

right in your backyard or balcony. Whether you’re a 

gardening novice or just want to start a vegetable garden with 

the least amount of time and effort, here are the top almost 

foolproof vegetables to grow. 

• Lettuce and Other Salad Greens: Lettuce grows quickly, is 

really easy to harvest and takes up very little space. They can 

even grow in containers, perhaps accompanied by flowers or 

tucked under taller plants. 

• Tomatoes: Possibly the most popular vegetable for any size 

garden, you can grow tomatoes in hanging baskets or other 

containers or anywhere they’ll get lots of sun and have support 

for their stalks. Starter plants from the garden center are 

the easiest to grow. If you plant basil next to the tomato plants, 

you’ll naturally repel pests and even improve the flavor of the 

tomatoes and, luckily enough, like other herbs, basil is simple 

to grow as well. 

• Cucumbers: Cucumbers like sunlight and warm temperatures, 

as well as support for climbing. Once you give them these and 

water them regularly, they grow almost like weeds. You’ll probably 

have enough cucumbers to donate to your neighbors. 

• Carrots: Whole carrots are pretty easy to grow in the ground 

as well. The only thing about carrots is they might not grow very 

large, especially if you have rocky soil. Deep soil, well-drained 

soil is preferable - a raised bed is a good idea. They tolerate 

light shade too, although, like most plants prefer full sun. 

• Radishes: The seeds are large enough to sow easily, either in 

a garden bed or in a container that’s at least six inches deep. 

They grow in sun to partial shade. And as long as you manage 

to water them before the soil dries out, you’ll be rewarded with 

plenty of crispy, spicy radishes. Just sow more as you need them 

and you can grow radishes all season long. 

• Green Beans: All sorts of green beans, from snap beans (or 

string beans) to shell or whole beans are ideal for home gardens. 

Both types grow easily from seeds. Most beans prefer full sun 

and well-drained soil. 

• Zucchini: Like beans and cucumbers, zucchini plants are 

prolific, whether they are grown in containers or directly in 

mounded soil. Like beans and radishes, they grow easily from 

seeds. They need good moisture, though and prefer warm soil, 

so it’s best to sow seeds later in the warm season (a good plant 

for gardening procrastinators!).

TAX DEDUCTIONS 

As Americans fire up their laptops and desktops to get another 

e-filing season under way, the following is a look at six of the 

most popular tax deductions to consider as you get ready to 

crunch the numbers: 

1. Mortgage interest deduction: Unless you bought your home 

with cash or have paid off the mortgage, this tax deduction is 

probably a big one for you. It can save you thousands of dollars 

in tax payments. According to the IRS, taxpayers can deduct 

home mortgage interest if they meet two conditions: First, they 

must file a form 1040 and itemize deductions on Schedule A. 

Second, the mortgage must be secured debt on a qualified home 

that an individual owns. 

2. Student loan interest deduction: To claim the deduction 

for 2015, you need to meet the following conditions: 

• You have paid interest on a qualified student loan 

in tax year 2015. 

• You are legally obligated to pay interest on a qualified 

student loan. 

• Your filing status is not married filing separately. 

• If filing jointly, the taxpayer or his spouse cannot 

be claimed as dependents on someone else’s return. 

• The loan was taken solely to pay qualified higher 

education expenses. 

3. Real estate taxes deduction: Homeowners can use one form 

of tax to offset another. Remember to deduct real estate taxes 

paid on real property you own -- including state, local or foreign 

taxes. To claim the deduction, make sure the taxes are based on 

the assessed value of the property. 

4. Tax-loss-harvesting deduction: Simply put, loss harvesting is 

selling securities at a loss to offset a capital gains tax liability. 

That might sound a bit odd, but consider that the loss incurred is 

only temporary once you know how loss harvesting works - think 

of it as akin to harvesting apples but not cutting down the tree. 

5. Flexible spending account deduction: A flexible spending 

account or FSA, is a pre-tax benefit used to pay for eligible 

medical, dental and vision care expenses that are not covered 


y your insurance plan or elsewhere. This includes deductibles 

and co-payments connected to your health insurance expenses. 

This is one of the best tax-saving perks that employers offer, as 

it allows you to sock away up to $2,550 per year and not pay a 

cent of taxes on it. Some employers will even contribute to your 

plan. FSAs carry certain conditions, however. 

6. Charitable contribution deduction: Whether you dropped off 

a bag of clothing at a local charity or donated $5 at the cash 

register of your grocery store, you should be tracking all of these 

contributions to ensure you get the highest tax benefit possible.

GREEN COMMITTEE FORMING IN GRAND LAKES 

VOLUNTEERS AND IDEAS NEEDED! 

Have you ever wondered… Is there a more convenient way to 

recycle paint? Can we do something about the litter along Fry 

Road approaching the Grand Parkway? Can we avoid watering 

in the Grand Lakes common areas after a downpour? 

Within these (and other) questions lie opportunities to ensure 

good stewardship of our neighborhood. We are pleased to announce 

that one of our residents has volunteered to establish a 

Grand Lakes Green Committee. 

What should you expect from the Green Committee? 

The objective of the committee will be to assist the Board in fostering 

a culture of environmental sustainability within the Grand 

Lakes neighborhood, common facilities and common properties. 

The committee will focus on both operational aspects and 

neighborhood activities. The goal is to employ green practices, 

educate and provide a sense of community. 

One example of the types of endeavors you may see from the 

committee is hosting a “hard to recycle” drive within Grand 

Lakes to make it more convenient for residents to recycle items 

not included in our curbside pickup (e.g. electronics, batteries, 

chemicals, etc.). Another example is ensuring the rain sensors 

are functioning properly within the Grand Lakes common area 

irrigation systems. 

Are you interested in volunteering to serve on the 

Green Committee? 

Similar to the recently formed Wildlife Committee, the Green 

Committee will be made up of six residents selected by the Board. 

We are asking for volunteers to join this committee. 

If you are interested in serving, please review the Green Committee 

charter on the Grand Lakes Life website (www.grandlakeslife. 

com) to familiarize yourself with the committee duties and responsibilities. 

Then send an email explaining why you would be 

a good choice for the committee and identify any qualifications 

that would be beneficial in our evaluation of determining committee

by Friday, April 15, 2016. 

The Board of Directors will select and appoint the committee

GRAND LAKES’ PARKS 

In an effort to ensure our common areas are available for use 

and in a usable condition by the residents of Grand Lakes, the 

Board of Directors is installing signage notifying the residents 

that the park is only open for use during daylight hours and the 

consequences should anyone be caught causing damage to the 

park. Please speak with your children and report any suspicious 

behavior you may witness as a resident to the Fort Bend County 

Sheriff at 281-341-4665 (non emergency). 

COMMUNITY BIKE RACKS 

Grand Lakes’ residents are advised to lock up bikes when utilizing 

community parks and facilities. Bike racks are installed in 

various areas throughout the community.

FENCE STAINING 

Please be aware that resident fence painting is not permitted in 

the Grand Lakes Community without the approval of the New 

Construction Committee (NCC). In an effort to maintain visual 

harmony within Grand Lakes, the Association does not permit 

residents to color stain their exterior fences. Residents can however, 

seal their fence with a clear wood preservatives treatment, 

provided it is approved by the Grand Lakes Community Association, 

NCC. Should you have any questions regarding this matter 

or any other home improvements, modifications or additions to 

your home’s exterior, please contact PMG at 713-329-7100. 

GRAND LAKES “TRAILS” - NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES,

Grand Lakes has a strict CATCH & RELEASE policy. Only “barbless” 

hooks are allowed to prevent injuring fish that are caught 

and returned. Please use care when handling fish and gently 

return them to the water as quickly as possible. Trotlines or other

PREVENT EXCESSIVE BARKING! 

Dogs left alone all day get lonely, bored 

and restless. Many find relief in barking. 

Some respond noisily to any and all activity. 

Nothing is as annoying as incessant 

barking-even for dog lovers. If your dog 

is a yapper or a yowler, please consider 

some of these bark-abatement ideas to 

keep the noise down in your area. Your 

neighbors will thank you! 

• Training. Training not only helps your 

dog, you’ll be surprised how much it helps 

you, too. You may get some insight into 

why your dog barks so much, or what it 

is trying to communicate. 

• Citronella collars. 

• Confinement. Sometimes simply bringing 

an outspoken dog indoors or confining 

it to a crate cuts down on the disturbance 

to neighbors. 

• For inside dogs, reduce stimulus. Close 

drapes to help muffle street noise, or leave 

a radio on to mask it. 

• Companionship. Dogs are pack animals; 

they need companionship-a cat, 

bird or another dog. Consider a mid-day 

visit from a pet-sitting service or drop your 

pooch off at a friend’s place or a day-care 

facility once or twice a week.

PLANNING 2016: NEW REALITIES, 

NEW EXPECTATIONS 

Financial resolutions often fall prey to the same procrastination 

that hinders personal aspirations. Yet current volatility in the 

financial markets along with other unsettling factors such as the 

impending presidential election and widespread geopolitical 

unrest may have led investors to pause, rethink their financial 

situations and set new expectations for the future. 

Resolutions typically fall into one of three financial “life stages” 

- accumulation, preservation or transfer of wealth. In order to 

establish action plans for these phases, you need to examine 

opportunities, identify challenges and add a dose of reality to 

your planning efforts. 

Accumulating Assets. The key to pursuing longer-term financial 

goals, such as retirement and education funding, is to have a 

well-thought-out plan that assigns actual dollar amounts to each 

goal - and a timetable for getting there. On this score, many 

investors are falling well short of the mark. 

For instance, research compiled by the Employee Benefit Research 

Institute (EBRI) indicates that a sizeable percentage of 

workers say they have virtually no money in savings and investments. 

Specifically, among workers who provided this type of information, 

57% reported that the total value of their household’s 

savings and investments, excluding the value of their primary 

home and any defined benefit plans, is less than $25,000. This 

includes 28% who say they have less than $1,000 in savings. 

If you find yourself behind in your accumulation efforts for major 

life expenses, such as retirement, don’t despair. There are 

many opportunities to jump-start your savings campaign: (1) 

Make the most of employer-sponsored plans. For participants 

in 401(k)s, 403(b)s and 457 plans, the contribution limit stands 

at $18,000 for 2016 with an additional $6,000 in catch-up contributions 

allowed for those who are 50 or older. (2) Maximize 

IRA contributions. In 2016, you can contribute up to $5,500 to 

a traditional or Roth IRA (or split that amount between the two 

types of accounts). Add another $1,000 to that total if you are 

making catch-up contributions. 

Don’t let procrastination get the better of your best-laid plans. 

Make 2016 the year you get serious about saving. 

Preserving Assets. Holding on to your assets requires a disciplined, 

long-term view. Most people plan for a retirement to 

span 25-plus years, but evaluate their portfolios’ performance 

over the last quarter. Particularly in volatile market environments, 

investors tend to move in and out of positions too quickly, potentially 

causing them to sell low, buy high and abandon asset 

allocation fundamentals. 

Short-term declines are inevitable and may tempt the most 

grounded investor to make impulsive investment choices. That 

is why maintaining an investment policy statement that reflects 

your long-term horizon is essential. Such a statement should 

reflect your current investment expectations as well as address 

the tax consequences of your portfolio. 

For instance, many investors tend to hold on to a stock because 

of a low basis without evaluating what it may be costing them 

in missed opportunities (i.e., building a more diversified portfolio). 

Alternatively, investors need to be mindful of the tax cost 

associated with buying and selling securities. Tax efficiency is 

important in asset preservation, so speak to your tax advisor 

now about your 2016 strategy, particularly if you plan to rebalance 

your portfolio.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL 

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate 

a great many pests that die from various causes while in the 

bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, 

you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little 

more on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. 

Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes 

exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in 

your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants 

at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create 

a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The 

exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long 

as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive 

to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing 

high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows 

on your walls.

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray 

eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to

Don’t mess with Texas® and Keep Texas Beautiful invite you to 

set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did you 

know that Texans ages 16 to 34 are the most likely to litter? We 

need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to keep our 

environment free of trash. This contest is a great way to share 

the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful litter prevention 

messages with your elementary school students so that 

they learn good habits from an early age. 

Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our 

environment, elementary school students from across Texas can 

submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for 

the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged 

based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention 

message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, 

composition and age appropriateness. 

Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create 

the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a 

month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas 

Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B 

and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be 

showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful 

websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful 

annual conference, in media announcements and through other 

means as appropriate. 


Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the 

top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift

big, old airplanes with the mighty round engines will be flying 

again as the Commemorative Air Force’s Houston Wing presents 

its 2016 Open House at Hangar B-5, West Houston Airport. Bring 

the family and get up close and feel the prop wash and hear the 

noise as radial engines power these WWII aircraft. See some of 

the old planes your father, grandfather or grandmother learned 

to fly for World War II. We expect to have 15 - 20 historic aircraft 

on display along with several WWII military vehicles.

18000 Groschke Rd., 2 miles north of 1-10 and between Hwy.

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ 

to 5 sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The

10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith 

L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each 

week features a different nature theme and may include nature 

talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in the woods. For

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the 

“Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the 

elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities 

and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic 

and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday 

morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse 

during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St.

RICHMOND ROSENBERG BOYS & GIRLS CLUB 

On February 12 th , at the Richmond Rosenberg Boys & Girls Club, 

eighteen scholars participated in a “What I’m Thankful For” Oratory 

Competition. The group had worked for 4 weeks preparing 

their speeches under the guidance of Senior Girl Scout Angela 

Lytle of Katy. This event was the first step in Lytle’s Gold Award 

project to implement a Speech & Debate Club at the center. 

TEXAS MASTER NATURALIST 

The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a 

membership of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, 

chapter members have enjoyed learning together and sharing 

their love of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of a 

state-wide Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 

volunteers in 44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million 

service hours as of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted 

or conducted projects on approximately 195,700 acres of

the AARP will provide free income-tax-preparation assistance 

for low-income taxpayers. Patrons should bring the following 

information to the session if possible: photo ID, Social Security 

card(s) for self, spouse and all dependents, last year’s tax return,

unemployment compensation statements and any other documents 

that are necessary to complete your return. This service

Income-tax forms will no longer be available at the libraries, but

and print out the forms from the IRS website, www.irs.gov,

RUOK PROGRAM 

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program 

called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated 

call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons 

who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer 

will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and 

the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you 

OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If 

the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any 

time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when 

you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call 

back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, 

the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will 

have with them a print out of information on the person that 

is not responding to the calls. This program was established 

by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and Ken 

Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 1998. 

Many police chiefs in the county are also participating in the 

program and will proceed with the welfare check for citizens 

of their community. To request more information or to enroll in 

this free and very beneficial program, please call the Sheriff’s

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” 

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property 

to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed 

and inoculated as required by law. 

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your 

dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you 

must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their 

‘peace and quiet.’ 

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep 

your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to 

you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to 

harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ 

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area 

ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. 

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined 

to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of 

unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog 

bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained 

or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. 

In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being 

bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws 

is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts 

to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. 

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS 

The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should 

that animal become lost. Licensing also: 

• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. 

• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. 

• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the 

animal control program. 

VACCINATION 

Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats 

because they are an important control measure for the public 

health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies 

vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals 

and humans.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS ENGAGE IN HANDS-ON 

MEDICAL EMERGENCY LESSONS 

Houston Methodist Cinco Ranch Emergency Care Center hosted 12 girl scouts 

from junior level troops 152015 and 152011 and nine parent chaperones on 

Saturday, Jan. 30 th . The young women had the opportunity to tour the facility 

and receive hands-on lessons regarding blood pressure testing, various pediatric 

treatments, stroke, radiology and other emergency services. Baystar EMS welcomes 

the girls to view the back of an ambulance, with one scout pretending to 

be a patient on a gurney.

23 large marshmallows 2 cups brown sugar 

1/4 cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®) 1 cup butter 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped 

DIRECTIONS: 

Cook and stir the marshmallows, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and vanilla extract 

together in a pot over medium-low heat until the marshmallows are completely 

melted, 5 to 7 minutes.
