The annual garage sale is coming up on April 9 th , we will be putting up signs
around the community and also advertising in the online garage sale sites.

KID CRAFT DAY - APRIL 16 TH
This is a new event that we added this year. We have a few ideas of what will
be planned however, you can expect a fun filled time for the kids doing all
sorts of different crafts. The event details for this event will be posted on Facebook

YARD OF THE MONTH
Due to the due date of the publication for our newsletter
we will announce the winner for each month on a 2 month
delay. March’s Yard of the Month winner has already been
announced on Facebook and Nextdoor and will be announced
in the May 2016 newsletter.
This is a great time to spruce up your yard and get it looking
the best for a chance to win Yard of the Month for Lost Creek
and $100 in cash! The Board is looking forward to seeing
those amazing yards again this year!
SIERRA LONG PARK - UPDATE
Design Objectives and Process
• Requests went out to Lost Creek residents for suggestions
on what items should be considered for inclusion in the park.
• At the same time a search was started in an effort to find
a landscape designer/architect.
• Several firms were contacted and those who expressed an
interest were provided with information on the site, the issues
we have to contend with and some ideas on what the park
should contain.
• Only a few came out to see the sight. After a few months,
all but one firm decided not to work with us. Their reasons
ranged from “project is too small” to “we don’t have the time
to work this into our schedule.” Talley Landscape Architects
was the only company, which agreed to work with us.
Getting Ready to Launch
• First off, the property had to be surveyed because of changes
that were made when it was owned by Morrison Homes.
• Basic park designs were presented to the Board by the architect
based on the items that the Board selected to include
in the park.
• Now it’s the fall of 2015 and we wanted to get started, but
we experienced unusually wet weather where it rained heavily
almost every week or so and prevented us from obtaining the
soil needed to grade the park.
• In the meantime, the developer/owner of the property at
the southwest corner of Bellaire and Peek offered to allow
Fort Bend MUD 50 to take over 200 live oak trees from that
old tree farm site before sale of the property was concluded.

• The trees were free, so all the MUD had to do was to find
someone to move the trees. They did for a cost of $200 per
tree.
• Since Lost Creek would be needing trees for the park, a
separate agreement between MUD 50 and Lost Creek was
entered into for 60 of the trees. This was done so that we
could benefit from the same low cost of transplanting.
• The weather condition that held off grading also delayed
the tree transplanting for a few months because the ground
was too muddy for the transplanting equipment to be used
at the tree farm.
• Still unable to get the soil needed to do the grading, it was
decided to go ahead with the tree transplanting in January
2016 before the tree farm property sale closed.
• The trees were all transplanted, but then the weather turned
warm, dry and windy. So the race was on to get the irrigation
system in and the trees could be watered.
• The irrigation system is now in and functioning. Initial
grading has begun.
• Additional grading will continue over the next month or so
and then hydro-mulching and seeding will be done.
• Other major park additions will be done over the next
2 - 3 years.

through all kinds of codes to find one that opens your garage

garage door closed when you are not working in your garage
or not out in your front yard. If you are like most of us, you
have many things in your garage, including expensive tools

Bayou City Art Festival. Lia Castillo and Briana Creery, both 8 th
graders at Briscoe, will compete with 300 other Houston-area
art pieces.
“This contest is an extension of the adult art show, Bayou City
Art Festival. This festival brings in artists from all over the U.S.
The middle school contest was open to Houston and surrounding
communities. For our students to have won two finalist place
in this group is amazing,” said BJH art teacher, Audrey Fuege.
With history in various other art competitions students compete,
this is only the second year anyone from Briscoe has entered
this contest and the first time students will be featured. “We are
very proud of our two Briscoe students and can’t wait to see how
they compete in this festival,” Fuege said.
The girls were chosen to be a part of this competition based on
their creativity and detail. When the passion is there, all it takes
is a little push from someone with a similar passion. “I wanted
to share my love of art with my students just like my teacher
did for me,” Fuege said. Their art work will be displayed at the
Bayou City Art Festival in late April in Memorial Park, Houston.

LAMAR CISD HONORED BY COLLEGE BOARD FOR
PREPARING STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE
Lamar CISD is one of 130 school districts in the United States and
one of only 21 in Texas placed on the College Board’s Gaston
Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll. Districts featured on the Honor
Roll expanded access to higher education by providing students
with rigorous academic offerings and innovative college-preparation
programs. The award is named for the former governor
of West Virginia who was president of the College Board 1999-
2012. Districts on the Honor Roll demonstrated significant and
consistent growth in the number of underrepresented students
and students from lower-income backgrounds participating in
AP®, taking the SAT® and applying to four or more colleges.
To be included on the Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll,
a school district must:
•Increase the total number of underrepresented students who
took the SAT;
•Increase the total number of underrepresented students who
took an AP course and exam;
•Increase the total number of underrepresented students who
were on track for college, as demonstrated by scoring 1550+
on the SAT;
•Increase the total number of underrepresented students who
scored a 3 or higher on an AP Exam; and
•Increase the total number of underrepresented students who
sent their SAT scores to at least four colleges.

NO. 26 IN NATION
George Ranch High School recently received the cherry on top of
the perfect treat that was the 2015 football season. Representatives
of MaxPreps visited the Longhorns and revealed the team
ended the season ranked No. 26 in the nation. The online high
school sports leader ranks more than 15,000 football teams every
year. The visit was part of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions,
sponsored by the Army National Guard.
“It’s a special award and special ranking for our kids and football
team to be highly ranked, said Longhorn head football coach
Ricky Tullos. “We’re proud of our school, kids and community
to be a part of such a prestigious award.”

Foster High senior Nwankwo
Nwankwo earns gold at the
State UIL Wrestling Tournament, finishing second in the 5A Division
at 285 lbs. And yet, he can’t claim bragging rights in his
own home. Little sister Nkechinyere (ChiChi) Nwankwo, a junior,
wrestled her way to the Gold Medal for the 5A Division at 215
lbs. Jeffery Rayome is the wrestling coach at Foster.
George Ranch High School also had a wrestler make the podium,
with junior Diana Luong taking 5 th at 138 lbs. James Kirby is the
wrestling coach at George Ranch. He was named the Wrestling
Coach of the Year for District 12-5A. Kent Jones, also at George
Ranch, was the Region 3 Assistant Coach of the Year.

The logo, featuring a fierce horse, with a body that tails off into
a lightning bolt, was designed by a graphic artist. Ward, Leaman
Principal Mike Semmler, Oschler Flemming, Fulshear High’s
athletic coordinator and Socorro Torres, Ward’s administrative
assistant, took part in the process of finalizing the logo. “This is
actually the fifth or sixth version,” he said. “But this one really
pops!” Ward said spirit wear will be available in May.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The “Stepping into the Future” scholarship program is available
to Katy ISD seniors graduating with GPA’s ranging from
2.5 to 3.7 and is sponsored by Dr. James M. Jacobs and

recipients will be announced at the Katy ISD Awards Ceremonies

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the

IT’S THAT TIME

This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of
tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys.
It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most likely animals
that may be using your home or out-buildings as a nesting site
are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing activity during the
day it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and are active
at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best
if you can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies
are old enough, she will move out on her own taking her babies
with her. If you’d like to strongly encourage her to leave, in the
evening you can place a loud radio, bright lights and unpleasant
smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of your
chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her.
If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing
the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If
you continue to hear the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck.
Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a
company that will work to try to reunite the mother and baby.
Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother
is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are
alike so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how
the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so,
why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned?
Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a humane
animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call.
The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry
points and block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals
in your attic or walls before you do this. Look over, under and around
your roof area. If you find openings, repair them.
Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are
only looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their
little ones until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us.

eighteen scholars participated in a “What I’m Thankful For” Oratory
Competition. The group had worked for 4 weeks preparing
their speeches under the guidance of Senior Girl Scout Angela
Lytle of Katy. This event was the first step in Lytle’s Gold Award
project to implement a Speech & Debate Club at the center.

The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership
of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, chapter
members have enjoyed learning together and sharing their love
of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of a state-wide
Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in
44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as
of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted
projects on approximately 195,700 acres of habitat while also
developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive trails.

BECOME A TUTOR-UNDERSTAND OUR
STUDENT’S LIFELINES
Become an essential part of a student’s life by signing up to
be a tutor for the Literacy Council! The Literacy Council of
Fort Bend County holds tutor training every other month. After
12 hours of training, outstanding volunteers are equipped to
teach Basic Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL)
classes to adults. The trainings prepare tutors to organize and
compile lesson plans, learn about various tutoring techniques,
understand the purpose of the Literacy Council and much more.
Tutors do not need knowledge of any foreign language, nor do
they need formal teaching experience. We offer many locations
for tutoring throughout the area, including locations in Katy.
Tutoring sessions are offered during the day and at night. If
you are interested in impacting someone’s life by being their

RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated program
called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computer-generated
call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and disabled persons
who live alone and could benefit from a daily check. A computer
will generate a call each morning, at about the same time and
the participant chooses a time frame. A voice will ask, “Are you
OK?” After this, all they have to do is hang up the phone. If
the participant goes out of town or leaves the residence for any
time, you just temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when
you return. If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call
back 3 times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer,
the Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will
have with them a print out of information on the person that
is not responding to the calls. This program was established

CARAMEL POPCORN WITH MARSHMALLOW
You could make this on National Caramel Popcorn Day April 6 th !
INGREDIENTS:
23 large marshmallows 2 cups brown sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®) 1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped
DIRECTIONS:
Cook and stir the marshmallows, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and vanilla extract
together in a pot over medium-low heat until the marshmallows are completely
melted, 5 to 7 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
4 tablespoons lemon flavored Jell-O® mix 4 cups fresh blueberries
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
DIRECTIONS:
In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar and cornstarch. Pour in water and
bring to a full boil. Turn off heat and add in gelatin; stir until completely dissolved.
Let cool.
When mixture is cooled fold in blueberries. Gently pour into the graham cracker
crust. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour or until ready to serve.
