HERB GARDEN
Plans are well underway for the new herb garden at Park Cypress Park. It will be great
to have gardens in two places this season! Volunteers are still needed at both Desert
Ivy and Park Cypress. Several people have indicated an interest but failed to provide
contact information. If you are interested please contact me directly at 281-578-1289. If
you previously indicated your interest and have not heard from me it probably means I lost
your information. I still want your help so please contact me at the above number. Looking
forward to a good season of healthy, tasty meals!
BLUEBONNETS AND WILDFLOWERS
Bluebonnets and wildflowers bloom on their own time schedule. With the warm weather
and recent rains, they should be popping out soon! A Green Trails neighborhood get
together will be held when the bluebonnets make their appearance. Please watch for signs
announcing the date, time and location of the get together. Information will also be posted
on the Green Trails Neighborhood facebook page.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you have an hour to spare each month to help improve your neighborhood, consider
volunteering for one of the following committees: Architectural Review, Community Events,
Finance, Landscape, Parks Pools, Security, Swim Team or Tennis. For more information,
contact Heather Esteban with Crest Management at 281-579-0761.
NO CALL IS TOO SMALL
Call the Constable to report any suspicious activity. The fastest dispatch for Green Trails
is via their direct line at 281-463-6666. If something “doesn’t seem right,” don’t wait to be
sure. Trust your intuition, call it in and let them decide. You are our best defense.
CONTRACTOR COMMUNICATION
Too many bosses - not a good idea. Our contractors have instructions to take direction
from our management company, Board and committee chairs only. If you see something
you think is a problem, please contact Crest Management. We will resolve it as quickly as
possible.
MOSQUITO CONTROL
Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract with Excalibur Mosquito
Control, but you can help, too. The best mosquito control program includes
removal of breeding sites. Check your yards and correct these problem
areas:
1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and birdbaths, which can hold dampness
or water.
2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in gutters.
3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from roof valleys and piles around
house.
4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for more than 20 minutes after
watering, you are over watering.
5. Monitor standing water under decks and around pools or spas. Spray
under deck with garden-variety insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic
under decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.
DOGGIE DON’TS
Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a leash and picking up after
your pets. We thank you!
HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog owners allowing their dogs
to defecate and urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in high-traffic
areas near park entrances. Be aware that it is not just your dog. Once a yard
has been “used,” other dogs want to do so as well. A resident should not
have to pick up after even one dog, much less ten. In addition, runners and
walkers in our parks don’t enjoy dodging excrement. Please carry a bag and
pick up after your pet.
Remember also, that even the sweetest dog may seem intimidating to some
people. Respect their rights and comply with leash laws.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LAWN?
If you have spots in your yard that are yellowing or dying, be sure you are
treating the right problem. Chinch bugs, Brown Patch and Take-all Root Rot
fungus are all possible causes.
Chinch bugs can be a problem when the weather is hot and dry. Keep
lawns properly watered. Excess nitrogen fertilizer makes the lawn more
susceptible to chinch bugs. A few chinch bugs are normal, but large brown
areas, especially near pavement, need attention. To check for cinch bugs,
cut a plug of half-dead, half-alive grass and submerge in water. Chinch bugs
(black bodies, white wings) will float. Even if bugs are present, keeping the
area well-watered may keep the grass from turning brown. You can apply a
solution purchased from a lawn/garden store to help control them.
Brown patch thrives in warm, humid environments, especially as nights get
cooler. It can cause patches of your lawn to turn brown, wilt and dry up. If you
pull on a clump, the blades will break off, leaving the runners. Turf affected by
Brown Patch will grow back, usually from the middle of the area out leaving
a round ring just before it rebounds completely.
Brown Patch often appears in turf, which is high in nitrogen and overfertilized.
Large amounts of grass clippings left on the yard may also
encourage fungus.
Wet soil also encourages fungus. If you irrigate, do so late at night, just
before and at daybreak - not in the evening or just after dark. Be sure your
yard drains and does not hold standing water.
Consult your garden center or the internet for fungicide suggestions. Two or
three treatments may be needed during a growing season. One suggested
organic treatment for brown patch: Mix one TBSP baking soda, one TBSP
corn oil and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution to your lawn.
In order for fungicides and fertilizers to work, you will need to test the PH of
your soil. Lawns need to have a PH which measures 6.5 - 7.0. You can use
a PH test kit or a PH soil probe.
Take-all Root Rot Fungus attacks both St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns
stressed by too much or too little water. If you pull on a clump of brown grass,
it will lift easily - roots and all. It can appear in hot weather, unlike Brown Patch
fungus which usually appears when nights are cooler. For more information on
identification and treatment, go to www.plantanswers.com/root_rot_fungus.
htm. Part of this information is from www.bugspray.com/article/fungus.
WATERING TIPS
Conserve water; water only when needed. Your goal should be 1 to 1 1/2
inches per week. Less frequent, deeper watering encourages deeper root
growth and helps your yard endure dry spells. Adjust your irrigation so that
it does not spray paved areas or run off over curbs. Consider running two
shorter cycles to allow water to soak in. Avoid watering during the hottest part
of the day; you will lose more water to evaporation.
For more tips see http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/newsletters/hortupdate/2011/
apr/water.html or www.ktrh.com/pages/gardenline-watering.html. Comply with
any water restrictions set by our MUD districts.
Remember to apply and get ARC approval before doing work that affects the
exterior appearance of your house or yard. This includes replacing fences,
repainting (even the same color) and re-roofing. Approval can take up to one
month, so plan ahead. For details, see the website, www.greentrailstwo.com
or call Crest Management at 281-579-0761.
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great
many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy
‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches,
termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of
future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your
homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in
your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12”
- 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is
18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up
next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The
most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing
high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates
overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest
onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests
from the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and
puts your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown
patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in
some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b)
fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do not
water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger and
more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY
ELEMENTARY CARNIVAL
The 2016 Nottingham Country Elementary (NCE) Carnival is coming on
April 8 th , from 5 PM-8:30 PM. Everyone is invited, free of charge, to “travel
around the world in a day!” The event will celebrate diversity, which is NCE’s
theme for the 2015-2016 school year and will be sprinkled with aerospace
references, because no one can appreciate the unity of humanity better than
an astronaut!
Carnival is one of two annual fundraisers for NCE and typically attracts
thousands of Katy residents and their families. It will take place at the NCE
campus, 20500 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, Texas. Entertainment will include many
games and rides, including the return of the Gmax (by popular demand)
and the introduction of The Big Baller, a giant obstacle course featuring four
huge, red, inflatable balls surrounded by a blue ball pit resembling a moat
filled with water. In the food and beverage department, NCE will be offering a
sampling of culinary delights from around the world! Chick-Fil-A also returns
this year, along with the Chick-Fil-A cow. Pizza and Tutti Frutti for dessert
also will be available.
Young attendees will enjoy the Petting Zoo and Trackless Train and every
guest can replenish their supplies of gear at the Carnival General Store. Kids
of all ages can capture photos with their friends in the Photo Booth. Kids are
invited to wear multi-cultural attire to the Carnival - as a reminder to everyone
that diversity is interesting and beautiful! Everyone is encouraged to wear
their dancing shoes (sneakers count) and participate in our Carnival Dance
Contest. Prizes for 1 st and 2 nd place will be awarded!
Don’t forget the Silent Auction, bound to tantalize with themed baskets from
each NCE class, as well as parties and the ever-popular 5 th grade basketball
game. Previous auctions have included a weekend getaway in a Galveston
condo! Stay tuned to NCE’s Facebook page for details on this year’s auction
items! Volunteers from Taylor High School will be lending a helping hand
to this year’s event and many local businesses have shown their support
of NCE by sponsoring this year’s Carnival. All sponsorship dollars are
applied toward purchases to improve the school. This year’s Carnival will be
absolutely out of this world. We’ll see you…out there!
JAMES E. TAYLOR HIGH SCHOOL
KEY CLUB HOSTED
INTERNATIONAL DINNER
On January 15, 2016, the James E. Taylor High School Key Club hosted a
buffet-style international dinner (INDIE for short) in collaboration with several
other cultural clubs (International Cultural Society, Chinese and Japanese
Club, German Club and South Asian Students Association.) Several local
businesses made donations to provide for the dinner and the raffle that also
took place. Tickets were sold separately for the dinner and raffle and due
to the large amount of attendees, the total profit amounted to $973.67. This
profit will be donated to aid the 4 million Syrian refugees who have lost their
homes due to Civil War, not as an effort to encourage Syrian immigration to
America, but rather to help a humanitarian cause and provide clean water,
food, shelter, clothing, etc. to the innocent. INDIE was successful in providing
a vast array of international foods to attendees while raising an a mountable
sum for a just cause and it has hopefully marked the beginning of a selfless
tradition that will be continued for years to come.
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just
to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning
from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501
is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our
director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find
out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare
two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always
a new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular
show this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900
and every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get
together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call
the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.
Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see you and
if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more information, please
HOUSTON CHILDREN’S CHARITY
Join a group of people dedicated to improving the lives of children. If you
are searching for a good cause to lend a hand to, you need look no further.
Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated
to improving the quality of life for underprivileged, abused and disabled
children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is
limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal, the rainbow that we
chase, is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.
Do you have the time and desire to volunteer to help a great cause? We are
always in need of volunteers to help throughout the year. This is a great way
for school age kids to get in community service hours. Do you have gently
used children’s clothing, shoes and jackets? At Houston Children’s Charity
we are setting up the “HCC Closet.” All of the items donated will be given to
children - not sold at a retail store. Please contact our office at 713-524-2878
STANDUP FOR KIDS
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all
volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless
kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in
order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve
their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from
abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up
to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest
rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for
our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe
environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization
would like to hold a food or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please
contact me at HeatherE@standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp
For Kids or how you can help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org.
The single greatest need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous
caring and real support. We must convince them that we care, we want them
back and we want to help them get off the streets.
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION
FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for Jewish
Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using
computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL or
other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community
service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
LITERACY ADVANCE OF HOUSTON
IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
Your way to transform a life in need… Teach someone to read! Just a few
hours a week can make all the difference for someone in your community!
Literacy Advance is Houston’s largest and oldest 100% volunteer-supported
literacy organization - and we need your help! We’re calling all passionate
volunteers to help adults learn to read, write and speak English. All classes
are free because they are taught by caring people just like you willing to
volunteer a few hours a week. We’d love to match you with a person in
need. Ola read her first book at age 49, thanks to a tutor just like you. Prior
teaching experience is welcome but not necessary. Training and ongoing
support is provided and we have locations across the city. Other volunteer
opportunities are available as well, to find out more please contact Anna
Zubkova, Volunteer Manager, at tutor@literacyadvance.org or at 713-266-
GIVE BACK & MENTOR A LOCAL JUVENILE
Please commit to becoming a positive adult role model for the youth in our
community. The juveniles are referred by the Fort Bend County Juvenile
Probation Department. There are so many children in need of a listening ear
and encouragement. Come forward and be that person for someone in need.
You may be the ONLY one! Mentors must be 21 years of age and willing to
give a minimum of an hour a week. Please contact Susan Bearden at 281-
GIVE A SENIOR THE GIFT OF MOBILITY!
KATY AREA RIDE SERVICE NEEDS YOUR HELP
DRIVING OLDER ADULTS
Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in transporting
seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, volunteering, visiting
a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and occasional medical rides. One third
of the older adults in your neighborhood live with this loss of independence
daily. Rides are provided in your personal vehicles to passengers who are
age 65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, may use walking aids). Time
commitment is flexible and you choose the Katy territory in which you want to
drive. Volunteers do not provide rides that go east of Barker Cypress, north of
Clay Road, west of FM 1463 or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand Parkway.
Benefits to Volunteer Drivers include the opportunity to help seniors retain
independent living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the day(s) and times
they are able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the senior or return later
24 April 2016
Green Trails II

to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years of age and 78 years of
age with a good driving record, pass a background check and show proof
of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required by the State of Texas.
To request a volunteer driver application, call 832-773-8645 or email info@
karskaty.org. KARS operates under an official 501(c)(3) that designates it
as a transportation service provider for seniors and non-wheelchair bound
persons with disabilities.
