IT’S THAT TIME

This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in 

your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the 

world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or 

out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing 

activity during the day it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and 

are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you 

can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she 

will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly 

encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright 

lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of 

your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her. 

If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise. 

If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you continue to hear 

the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal 

but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother 

and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is 

cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike so do your 

research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled. 

Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned 

or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance 

finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call. 

The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and 

block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls 

before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings, 

repair them. 

Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only 

looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones 

until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us.

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL 

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate 

a great many pests that die from various causes while 

in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to 

your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… 

Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future 

pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the 

top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will 

aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and 

accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants 

at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create 

a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. 

The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab 

as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The 

most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings, 

growing high against your homes exterior or (especially) 

ivy that grows on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring 

spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing 

trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual 

pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, 

prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts 

your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy. 

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment 

to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If 

your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some 

important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) 

weed control. 


Most important is proper watering: 

• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more 

- then do not water.) 

• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. 

• In severe drought, water every 5 th day. 

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. 

• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, 

stronger and more drought resistant roots.

HOUSTON AREA TEACHERS OF FOREIGN 

LANGUAGES’ FARRINGTON CONTEST 

Katy ISD had 26 students win awards at the 2016 Farrington 

Contest and Awards, sponsored by the Houston Area Teachers 

of Foreign Language. More than 200 Houston-area students 

participated in the language competition and schools were allowed 

to send three students from each language level. Participants 

completed a language exam including reading, writing, 

listening and speaking.

Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect our 

environment, elementary school students from across Texas can 

submit their best litter prevention design to be considered for 

the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries will be judged 

based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion of a litter prevention 

message and interpretation of theme, overall visual appeal, 

composition and age appropriateness. 

Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who create 

the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned to a 

month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas 

Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet donated by H-E-B 

and Central Market. All student winners and their artwork will be 

showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful 

websites and social media sites, at the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful 

annual conference, in media announcements and through other 

means as appropriate. 

Teachers win, too! Teachers representing students who produce the 

top 13 designs will each win a $100 H-E-B and Central Market gift

The run is open to participants of all ages, will not be timed; it’s 

all for fun. In addition to the 5k route, there will be a shorter 

track available for those not able to participate in the 5k distance.

WWII AIRCRAFT FLY-IN AND OPEN HOUSE 

Saturday and Sunday, April 16 th & 17 th , 10 AM to 5 PM, those 

big, old airplanes with the mighty round engines will be flying 

again as the Commemorative Air Force’s Houston Wing presents 

its 2016 Open House at Hangar B-5, West Houston Airport. Bring 

the family and get up close and feel the prop wash and hear the 

noise as radial engines power these WWII aircraft. See some of 

the old planes your father, grandfather or grandmother learned 

to fly for World War II. We expect to have 15 - 20 historic aircraft 

on display along with several WWII military vehicles.

The Noyes Fine Arts Foundation (NFAF) is premiering the first 

annual Puttin’ On The Ritz Gala - a black tie spectacular event 

for Katy. The Noyes Fine Arts Foundation plans to build the first 

state-of-the-art, community oriented performance center in Katy, 

Texas, an initiative named The Katy Grand Theatre Project. The 

Katy Grand Theatre will be the Katy community’s flagship performance 

venue to view family-friendly musical theatre, providing 

affordable space for local organizations to rent and offering professional 

quality performing arts training programs for the community. 

The Puttin’ On the Ritz Gala is NFAF’s annual fundraiser 

and is sure to become Katy’s don’t miss event for years to come. 

Held at the beautiful Briscoe Manor in Richmond, Texas, the 

Gala is a black tie affair certain to be a night to remember. For

THE ARC OF KATY SUMMER CAMP 

The Arc of Katy is currently taking applications for three 2016 

Summer Camp sessions for students and adults with IDD, ages 

16 and up. The camps will be held Monday through Thursday, 

weekly, from 8 AM until 3 PM at Cornerstone Evangelical Presbyterian 

Church (located at 1351 S Mason Rd, Katy, Texas 77450.) 

Session 1: June 6 th through June 30 th 

Session 2: July 5 th through July 29 th

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR 

PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 

sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program 

is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 

AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore 

Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features 

a different nature theme and may include nature talks, stories, 

hands-on activities and walks in the woods. For more information,

can be purchased for $20. The child must be accompanied by

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS) 

Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your 

talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! 

We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday 

morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement 

Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. 

Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided 

a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton 

and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you 

are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass. 

We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. 

We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show 

with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, 

narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is 

titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and 

every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type 

“get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic 

entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume 

with a program of sheer delight.

Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the 

“Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the

morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse

RICHMOND ROSENBERG BOYS & GIRLS CLUB 

On February 12 th , at the Richmond Rosenberg Boys & Girls Club, 

eighteen scholars participated in a “What I’m Thankful For” Oratory 

Competition. The group had worked for 4 weeks preparing 

their speeches under the guidance of Senior Girl Scout Angela 

Lytle of Katy. This event was the first step in Lytle’s Gold Award 

project to implement a Speech & Debate Club at the center. 

TEXAS MASTER NATURALIST 

The Coastal Prairie Chapter, Texas Master Naturalists has a membership 

of 85 outdoor enthusiasts. For the last 10 years, chapter 

members have enjoyed learning together and sharing their love 

of the outdoors with others. The chapter is part of a state-wide 

Master Naturalist organization consisting of 8,140 volunteers in 

44 local chapters with a total of over 2 million service hours as 

of 2012! Statewide TMN volunteers have impacted or conducted 

projects on approximately 195,700 acres of habitat while also 

developing or maintaining some 1,775 miles of interpretive trails.

FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW” 

Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property 

to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and 

inoculated as required by law. 

As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your 

dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you 

must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their 

‘peace and quiet.’ 

When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep 

your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to 

you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm 

someone while it was ‘roaming free.’ 

Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area 

ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog. 

Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined 

to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of 

unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog 

bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained 

or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public. 

In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being 

bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws 

is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts 

to reduce the risk of rabies in our community. 

LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS 

The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should 

that animal become lost. Licensing also: 

• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current. 

• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident. 

• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal 

control program. 

VACCINATION 

Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats 

because they are an important control measure for the public 

health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies 

vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals 

and humans. 

RUOK PROGRAM 

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated 

program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computergenerated 

call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and 

disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a 

daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning, 

at about the same time and the participant chooses a time 

frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they 

have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes 

out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just 

temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return. 


If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3 

times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the 

Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will 

have with them a print out of information on the person that 

is not responding to the calls. This program was established 

by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and 

Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in 

1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating 

in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for 

citizens of their community. To request more information or

Houston Methodist Cinco Ranch Emergency Care Center hosted 

12 girl scouts from junior level troops 152015 and 152011 and 

nine parent chaperones on Saturday, Jan. 30 th . The young women 

had the opportunity to tour the facility and receive hands-on 

lessons regarding blood pressure testing, various pediatric treatments, 

stroke, radiology and other emergency services. Baystar 

EMS welcomes the girls to view the back of an ambulance, with 

one scout pretending to be a patient on a gurney.

23 large marshmallows 2 cups brown sugar 

1/4 cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®) 1 cup butter 

1 teaspoon vanilla extract 

2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped 

DIRECTIONS: 

Cook and stir the marshmallows, brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and vanilla extract 

together in a pot over medium-low heat until the marshmallows are completely 

melted, 5 to 7 minutes.
