HAPPY SPRING TIME WILLIAMSBURG PARISH!!
OUR YARD OF THE MONTH GIVEAWAYS WILL START SOON!!
We are in the time of year to start making our yards beautiful.
Please keep up with grooming your yard along with treating and
watering. You never know when you might get that knock on the
door with the yard of the month sign and the prize that goes with
it, along with bragging rights. Thank you Board of Directors
A NOTE FROM THE BOARD
Williamsburg Parish Subdivision and the surrounding areas seem
to be a target right now for break-in’s.
Please make sure that all items visible in your vehicle of any kind
of value be brought into the home or hidden from view. Vehicle
break-in’s are becoming more and more rampant in our area right
now and we now have to be very mindful to protect our property.
Please make sure that your vehicle and windows are up and
locked. The individuals doing these type of break-in’s are looking
for UNLOCKED vehicles or items of value that are visible in the
vehicles to make it worth them breaking windows, etc. The other
thing would be to make sure that your garage is closed when you
are not outside or working in it. Seems that the thieving is starting
again, by those walking up into a garage taking items that are
laying out etc. This also has happened in our neighborhood in the
last few weeks.
Remember if you see suspicious activity report it to the Harris
County Sheriff’s Department, 911- for emergencies and 713-221-
6000 for non emergencies.
Thank you, Board of Directors Williamsburg Parish
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps
eliminate a great many pests that die from various
causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch
that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants,
roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged
material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep
your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes
exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing
pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate
termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/
plants at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your
best to create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide
around your home. The exception is your lawn - it
can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4”
- 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to
termite infestation are groundcover plantings, growing
high against your homes exterior or (especially) ivy that
grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The
spring spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi
while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of
summer with residual pesticides. The fall spray also
kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi from
occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset
off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide
treatment to stop brown patch in its tracks along with
other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas,
here are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration
b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or
more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT
NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow
deeper, stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
PRESENT THIS COUPON TO YOUR SUPERVISOR FOR HUGE SAVINGS!
IT’S THAT TIME
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter
of tiny feet in your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or
chimneys. It’s baby season in the world of wildlife. The most
likely animals that may be using your home or out-buildings
as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing
activity during the day, it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons
are nocturnal and are active at night. If you have a raccoon
“renting” from you, it’s best if you can leave her alone for a few
weeks. When the babies are old enough, she will move out
on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly
encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud
radio, bright lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good)
in the attic or at the base of your chimney. This will create an
unpleasant environment for her.
If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing
the noise. If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If
you continue to hear the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck.
Seek professional help for removal but make sure you hire a
company that will work to try to reunite the mother and baby.
Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother
is cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are
alike, so do your research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how
the animals will be handled. Will the animal be killed and if so,
why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned or abandoned?
Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance finding a
humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center
a call.
The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home
for entry points and block them. Make sure, however, that
there are no animals in your attic or walls before you do
this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find
openings, repair them. Remember, although animals may be
unwelcomed guests, they are only looking for a dry, quiet,
safe place to give birth and care for their little ones until
they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us. For more
information or for help with wildlife issues, call TWRC Wildlife
Center at 713-468-TWRC or check our website at www.
DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents
or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle! We are a
(ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from
10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501
Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music,
but it is not required. We are provided a CD to help in learning new
songs. Our director, Martha Upton and assistant director, Cay Eckland
will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years.
We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with
old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props, narratives
and choreography. Our regular show this year is titled “Through the
Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every decade after that.
If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would like a
half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles.
We’ll be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.
Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love to see
you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted. For more
information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit our website,
www.Decibelles.org.
GRACE NOTES
Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace
Notes” a performing group which shares music with the elderly in
retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities and community
events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic and sacred music.
We also sing once a month on Sunday morning for the congregation
of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse during the school year on Tuesday
mornings at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided.
Tuesday mornings are also our “outing” days to perform in the
community. Come and join this fun and wonderful music ministry.
