NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY GARDEN CLUB (NCGC)
On Thursday, April 7, 2016, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) will
feature Darrin Duling, Director of Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens,
presenting the program “It’s a Wonderful World - Finials and Follies: A Look
at Architectural Garden Features from Around the World.”
Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month from
September through May. Meet and greet time begins at 9:30 AM and the
program will begin at 10 AM, followed by the NCGC business meeting. Please
join us at the Municipal Utility Building #81 at 805 Hidden Canyon Drive,

We welcome all people interested in gardening and gardening
related topics. We serve the West Houston and Katy areas. You do not have
to live in the Nottingham Country neighborhood to belong to our group!
NCGC is a non-profit organization affiliated with the Houston Federation of
Garden Clubs, the Texas State Garden Clubs and the National Federation
of Garden Clubs. The purpose of the club is to promote the beautification of
our community, support local and national educational and civic organizations
and educate the community about our environment. Donations from
the NCGC are funded by our annual Spring Plant Sale and various projects
throughout the year.
LOCAL JAM SESSIONS
If you like to play a musical instrument and/or sing with other musicians, we
encourage you to join us on Friday nights, except the first Friday of the
month, from 6 to 8 PM at a local Katy location. (No charge and non-profit.)
We play on acoustic instruments, such as: guitar, fiddle, dobro, mandolin

GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many
pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’
mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites,
etc… Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future
pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes

exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing
pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite
inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants
at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to
create a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your
home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to
the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the
slab. The most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover
plantings, growing high against your homes exterior
or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring
spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing
trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual
pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer,
prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts
your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment
to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your
lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some important
fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain
or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper,
stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!

NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY ELEMENTARY CARNIVAL
The 2016 Nottingham Country Elementary (NCE) Carnival is
coming on April 8 th , from 5 PM-8:30 PM. Everyone is invited,
free of charge, to “travel around the world in a day!” The
event will celebrate diversity, which is NCE’s theme for the
2015-2016 school year and will be sprinkled with aerospace
references, because no one can appreciate the unity of humanity
better than an astronaut!
Carnival is one of two annual fundraisers for NCE and typically
attracts thousands of Katy residents and their families.
It will take place at the NCE campus, 20500 Kingsland Blvd.
Katy, Texas. Entertainment will include many games and rides,
including the return of the Gmax (by popular demand) and
the introduction of The Big Baller, a giant obstacle course
featuring four huge, red, inflatable balls surrounded by a
blue ball pit resembling a moat filled with water. In the food
and beverage department, NCE will be offering a sampling
of culinary delights from around the world! Chick-Fil-A also
returns this year, along with the Chick-Fil-A cow. Pizza and
Tutti Frutti for dessert also will be available.
Young attendees will enjoy the Petting Zoo and Trackless
Train and every guest can replenish their supplies of gear
at the Carnival General Store. Kids of all ages can capture
photos with their friends in the Photo Booth. Kids are invited
to wear multi-cultural attire to the Carnival - as a reminder to

baskets from each NCE class, as well as parties and the
ever-popular 5 th grade basketball game. Previous auctions
have included a weekend getaway in a Galveston condo!

HOSTED INTERNATIONAL DINNER
On January 15, 2016, the James E. Taylor High School
Key Club hosted a buffet-style international dinner (INDIE
for short) in collaboration with several other cultural clubs
(International Cultural Society, Chinese and Japanese Club,
German Club and South Asian Students Association.) Several
local businesses made donations to provide for the dinner
and the raffle that also took place. Tickets were sold separately
for the dinner and raffle and due to the large amount
of attendees, the total profit amounted to $973.67. This
profit will be donated to aid the 4 million Syrian refugees

to set aside time for their Elementary School Art Contest. Did

litter? We need to do all we can to motivate young Texans to
keep our environment free of trash. This contest is a great way

litter prevention messages with your elementary school
students so that they learn good habits from an early age.
Get creative! Inspired by their creativity and desire to protect
our environment, elementary school students from across
Texas can submit their best litter prevention design to be
considered for the 2016 Don’t mess with Texas Calendar. Entries
will be judged based on creativity/uniqueness, inclusion
of a litter prevention message and interpretation of theme,
overall visual appeal, composition and age appropriateness.
Students win prizes and have their art featured. Students who
create the top 13 winning designs will have their artwork assigned
to a month or featured on the cover of the 2016 Don’t
mess with Texas Calendar. Each will also win an iDeaUSA 8 tablet
donated by H-E-B and Central Market. All student winners and
their artwork will be showcased on the Don’t mess with Texas
and Keep Texas Beautiful websites and social media sites, at
the 2016 Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference, in media
announcements and through other means as appropriate.

Color for a Cause is a fun 5k color run event hosted by James
E. Taylor High School National Honor Society and Future Business
Leaders of America benefiting The Arc of Katy, a local
non-profit organization that works to create opportunities for
individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The run is open to participants of all ages, will not be timed;
it’s all for fun. In addition to the 5k route, there will be a
shorter track available for those not able to participate in the

WWII AIRCRAFT FLY-IN AND OPEN HOUSE
Saturday and Sunday, April 16 th & 17 th , 10 AM to 5 PM,
those big, old airplanes with the mighty round engines will
be flying again as the Commemorative Air Force’s Houston
Wing presents its 2016 Open House at Hangar B-5, West
Houston Airport. Bring the family and get up close and feel
the prop wash and hear the noise as radial engines power
these WWII aircraft. See some of the old planes your father,
grandfather or grandmother learned to fly for World War II.
We expect to have 15 - 20 historic aircraft on display along
with several WWII military vehicles.
Admission is $10 per car. The West Houston Airport is located
at 18000 Groschke Rd., 2 miles north of 1-10 and between
Hwy. 6 and Barker Cypress. Warbird rides may be available.

GRAND THEATRE PROJECT, APRIL 29 TH
The Noyes Fine Arts Foundation (NFAF) is premiering the first
annual Puttin’ On The Ritz Gala - a black tie spectacular event
for Katy. The Noyes Fine Arts Foundation plans to build the
first state-of-the-art, community oriented performance center
in Katy, Texas, an initiative named The Katy Grand Theatre
Project. The Katy Grand Theatre will be the Katy community’s
flagship performance venue to view family-friendly musical
theatre, providing affordable space for local organizations to
rent and offering professional quality performing arts training
programs for the community. The Puttin’ On the Ritz Gala is
NFAF’s annual fundraiser and is sure to become Katy’s don’t
miss event for years to come.
Held at the beautiful Briscoe Manor in Richmond, Texas, the
Gala is a black tie affair certain to be a night to remember.

THE ARC OF KATY SUMMER CAMP
The Arc of Katy is currently taking applications for three 2016
Summer Camp sessions for students and adults with IDD, ages
16 and up. The camps will be held Monday through Thursday,
weekly, from 8 AM until 3 PM at Cornerstone Evangelical Presbyterian
Church (located at 1351 S Mason Rd, Katy, Texas 77450.)
Session 1: June 6 th through June 30 th
Session 2: July 5 th through July 29 th
Session 3: August 1 st through August 18 th
Each session will include a variety of fun activities including excursions,
crafts, life skills, games and much more. Camp cost is
$30 per day and campers must be a current member of The Arc

PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN
The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5
sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program
is offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11
AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore
Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features
a different nature theme and may include nature talks, stories,
hands-on activities and walks in the woods. For more information,

DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your talents or just to
have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday morning from
10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement Center, 2501 Westerland,
near Westheimer and Gessner. Some of us read music, but it is not required. We
are provided a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton
and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you are a Tenor, Lead,
Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years. We prepare
two types of shows each year; a Christmas show with old favorites, but always a
new fun tune including props, narratives and choreography. Our regular show
this year is titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and every
decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type “get together” would
like a half hour of cheerful and melodic entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll
be there in costume with a program of sheer delight.

GRACE NOTES
Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the “Grace Notes” a
performing group which shares music with the elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s
and nursing facilities and community events. We sing a combination
of secular, patriotic and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday
morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse during the school
year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided.
Tuesday mornings are also our “outing” days to perform in the community. Come

MEDICAL EMERGENCY LESSONS
Houston Methodist Cinco Ranch Emergency Care Center hosted
12 girl scouts from junior level troops 152015 and 152011 and
nine parent chaperones on Saturday, Jan. 30 th . The young women
had the opportunity to tour the facility and receive hands-on
lessons regarding blood pressure testing, various pediatric treatments,
stroke, radiology and other emergency services. Baystar
EMS welcomes the girls to view the back of an ambulance, with
one scout pretending to be a patient on a gurney.

AARP will be offering free tax assistance to elderly and low-income individuals.

patrons and more. We will be holding our next volunteer orientation on Thursday,
April 7 th at 4:30 PM. Students should be in high school and must be able to

• TIMELESS TRAVELERS: SAN JACINTO DAY - Seniors 55+ are invited to join
the library’s Timeless Travelers program for a trip to San Jacinto Day, courtesy

April 23 rd at 10 AM, the bus departs from the Maud Marks Library for
a fun-filled day at the San Jacinto Monument. This program is for senior adults
only-no exceptions. Seating is extremely limited. Although admission is free,

or enough money to buy something to eat there. The bus will arrive back at the
library approximately 6:30 PM.
• DIY CRAFTS: CORK LETTERS - Make your initials out of cork! Join us on Tuesday,
April 12 th at 2 PM as we use wine corks to create various letters to decorate

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all
our residents. While you may know your pet is friendly, an
animal running at someone who is walking by is very scary for
that person. Many children are afraid of animals and become
frightened, which could result in the child getting hurt trying to
avoid the animal.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris County
Animal Control) advises that “All dogs and cats must be kept
under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized
to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow
any dog or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the
following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6)
feet in length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who
is capable of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal
does not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while
you work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is
properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place
for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will
not only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the
area, but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible
or possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet.

(3) organization committed to rescuing abandoned, stray and
owner-surrendered Dachshunds. We are an all-volunteer rescue

2 cups brown sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup (such as Karo®)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 (3.5 ounce) packages microwave popcorn, popped

FRESH BLUEBERRY PIE
You could make this on National Blueberry Pie Day April 28 th !
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup water
4 tablespoons lemon flavored Jell-O® mix
4 cups fresh blueberries
1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
DIRECTIONS:
In a medium saucepan, mix together the sugar and cornstarch.
Pour in water and bring to a full boil. Turn off heat and add in
gelatin; stir until completely dissolved. Let cool.
When mixture is cooled fold in blueberries. Gently pour into the
graham cracker crust. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour
