Geriatric Medicine for the Dental Team<br />

This lecture is intended for the dental team who wish to treat<br />

senior patients. Geriatric patients are coming to their dentist<br />

with increased medical complexities. The dentist must know<br />

how these can influence their dental treatment and how their<br />

dental treatment will affect their medical conditions. This presentation will<br />

highlight frequently encountered disabilities affecting senior patients. Other<br />

topics include pharmacology, consent and ethics.<br />

of Odontogenic Infections in Dental Practice”<br />

This course will provide the attendees with a foundation for<br />

the surgical and medical management of minor and severe<br />

odontogenic infections in their practices. There will be a thorough<br />

review of current antibiotics and their indications. Unusual<br />

infections such as those encountered with patients receiving bisphosphonate<br />

therapy, cancer chemotherapy and sinus protocols will be covered.<br />

Learning Objectives:<br />

• Discuss the pathophysiology and management of common and complex<br />

odontogenic infections in dental practice<br />

• The clinician will be able to give rationale for antibiotic selection for the<br />

management of head and neck infections<br />

patient will represent a significant component of dental<br />

practices. This course is designed to update the dental team<br />

to treat these patients. Medical conditions, dental problems<br />

and office design will be highlighted. Emphasis will be placed on both treating<br />

the healthy and debilitated senior patient. Issues covered include treatment of<br />

root caries, prevention, bisphosphonates, and treating the dying patient. Mobile<br />

dentistry as a practice option will be discussed.<br />

for the management of potential surgical complications in<br />

their clinical practices. An emphasis will be placed on the<br />

management of the complications associated with common<br />

surgical procedures. A wide variety of potential complications, including bleeding,<br />

dry sockets, pain, swelling, infections, nerve injuries, sinus communications and<br />

displaced teeth, will be covered. Attendees are encouraged to bring and discuss<br />

cases from their own practices as well during this forum.<br />

avoidable surgical problems<br />
