Dear Friends,<br />

Thanks to our devoted community, friends, individual donors,<br />

volunteers and corporate partners, we are proud to share our<br />

<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> with you. In it you will find all the ways in which<br />

your generous donations have helped us bring people and pets<br />

together. We are especially proud to announce our all time high<br />

save rate of 94.1 percent for 2010 — a 2.3 percent increase from<br />

2009! On behalf of the animals, thank you, and with your continued<br />

support we’ll save even more pets in the years to come.<br />

We Save Lives and Bring People & Pets Together<br />

Every year the <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong> helps thousands of loving dogs, cats, and critters in need in our<br />

community. We rescue animals from other shelters where they’ve run out of time, we embrace pets<br />

whose families can no longer care for them, and we save pets who are fending for themselves on the<br />

streets. We give them food, shelter, medical attention, and the tender care they need to become valued<br />

members of a loving family of their own.<br />

Missy and her siblings did not have the easiest start<br />

in life. They were found scared and alone on the<br />

streets at just four weeks of age. Lucky for them,<br />

they were brought to the <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong>.<br />

We placed them in a volunteer foster home for<br />

one month, and with the help of constant care and<br />

compassion, they grew big and strong. At two months<br />

of age, Missy was adopted by a doting adopter who<br />

writes, “Missy is growing very fast and is so playful —<br />

she is loads of energy and quite the little firecracker.<br />

Suffice to say, I’m a very proud mom of the cutest<br />

girl in the world!”<br />

Adoptions are at the Heart of Our Mission<br />

Missy received the love and care she needed in foster care.<br />

Adopters often write to the <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong> just to let us know how happy they are that we<br />

helped them meet their match.<br />

We adopted Wren from the Tuxes & Tails event and wanted to say thank you. She’s<br />

such a blessing to our family. Our children love her and she fits in perfectly. We named<br />

her Mia Meow — or Mimi. She and our Dachshund, Dewey, love each other. She likes to<br />

clean his ears. She curls up with both dogs and they all play together. I just wanted to<br />

follow up so you could see that you found another loving home for a pet. Keep up the<br />

good work. I know it’s a labor of love and you do a great job!<br />

Greetings,<br />

Gretta and I are an ITEM! She goes everywhere with me and could not be any sweeter.<br />

Such a loving dog. I am actually getting slowly used to the idea of walking a dog,<br />

instead of a dog walking me. Someone had trained her well. I’ve taught her a bad habit<br />

of getting up in bed with me and now she doesn’t want to get out of bed and barks for<br />

me to come re-join her once I come down to make coffee... hilarious!<br />

Adoptions<br />

We’re experts at matchmaking! <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> believes that every healthy and adoptable pet deserves a<br />

home of their own and that there is a perfect pet out there for every person. Last year we placed 5,431 dogs,<br />

cats and critters. Our bright and bustling Adoption Center is fun for the whole family and our friendly staff and<br />

volunteers are always there to help you choose the pet companion who is best for you.<br />

Spay/Neuter Surgery<br />

Every pet adopted from <strong>Seattle</strong><br />

<strong>Humane</strong> has been spayed or neutered.<br />

We also offer low-fee spay and neuter<br />

surgeries for pets belonging to lowincome<br />

pet owners. More than 2,000<br />

public pets were spayed/neutered<br />

by our veterinarians last year. Our<br />

“Mom’s Last Litter” program provides<br />

free spay/neuter surgeries for pet<br />

parents and their litters. Thanks to a<br />

grant from PetSmart Charities®, we<br />

also offer free spay/neuter surgeries<br />

for Pit Bulls.<br />

MaxMobile<br />

The MaxMobile is our 38-foot bright<br />

yellow bus for the animals! The<br />

MaxMobile travels throughout the<br />

region to local stores, markets, and<br />

events with pets ready for on-thespot<br />

adoptions. Last year, more than<br />

310 pets met their match on Max. The<br />

MaxMobile also visits local schools<br />

where our staff teaches students<br />

about humane education. In times<br />

of trouble, flood or fire, Max comes<br />

to the rescue to transport and house<br />

animals in an emergency until they<br />

can be returned to their families. The<br />

lead gift for the MaxMobile came from<br />

Kaycee and Michael Krysty.<br />

Volunteers<br />

Volunteers are at the heart of <strong>Seattle</strong><br />

<strong>Humane</strong>. They walk our dogs and<br />

brush our cats, deliver pet food to the<br />

elderly and disabled, and help with<br />

office work. We have nearly 1,400<br />

volunteers. Last year, our volunteers<br />

dedicated more than 182,000 hours of<br />

their time — the equivalent of 88 full<br />

time staff members!<br />

Training<br />

<strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> offers effective training courses and workshops<br />

for you and your pet in our auditorium. Most of our dog<br />

adoptions include a free six-week basic manners training course,<br />

and our courses are also open to the public. From puppy training<br />

to advanced agility, we have a class for everyone. Our certified,<br />

professional trainers use positive reinforcement methods to<br />

reward good behavior instead of punishing bad behavior.<br />

Visiting Pet Friends<br />

Our Visiting Pet Friends program brings the healing power of<br />

animal companionship to those who can no longer have pets of<br />

their own. We have more than 35 Visiting Pet Friends volunteers<br />

who take their certified pets to more than 40 facilities including<br />

nursing homes, centers for people with disabilities, children’s<br />

homes and other locations in King County.<br />

Pet Food Bank<br />

Our Pet Food Bank feeds more than 1,500 pets monthly who<br />

belong to low-income, disabled and senior clients. Thanks to<br />

donations from our community, our volunteers make monthly<br />

deliveries of nearly six tons of pet food to local senior centers,<br />

low-income housing complexes, food banks and individual<br />

homes. We welcome pet food drives all year round!<br />

Pet Project<br />

Pet Project helps low-income people disabled by AIDS keep their<br />

pets by providing their companion animals with food, supplies<br />

and medical care. By matching volunteers one-on-one with<br />

clients, 180 individuals don’t have to choose between pet care<br />

and self care. Our free, bi-monthly Pet Project Clinic provides<br />

clients’ pets with health checks, vaccinations, basic dental<br />

checks, and minor medical care.<br />

Pet Loss Support<br />

Losing your animal friend can be one of life’s most difficult<br />

experiences. We offer weekly Pet Loss Support sessions with<br />

trained volunteer facilitators to provide the public a safe<br />

place to work through the grieving process with others. Last<br />

year, 75 participants found comfort at a Pet Loss Support<br />

meeting. This free, drop-in service is held at the shelter every<br />

Saturday at 10 a.m.

For Teens and Kids<br />

Our MaxMobile brings humane education to the community every week, visiting local schools, community<br />

centers and festivals. We also provide an Animal Adventures Day Camp for kids so they can learn all about<br />

animals and enjoy pet-related activities. For older kids, we have the <strong>Humane</strong> Teen Club, a year-long program<br />

that prepares teens for volunteerism at <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong>.<br />

Foster Care<br />

By opening their hearts and homes to pets in need, foster care volunteers help us literally expand the walls of<br />

our shelter and save more animals’ lives. Last year, more than 4,800 pets benefited from foster care. Foster<br />

parents help our most fragile shelter guests by giving older pets a break from the shelter, allowing pets time to<br />

recover from surgery, providing dogs rescued from puppy mills with extra care, and so much more!<br />

Lexus Fund<br />

The Lexus Fund allows us to provide shelter dogs with the extra medical<br />

care they need to make them healthy and adoptable. Thanks to the<br />

Lexus Fund, we were able to give 109 dogs the extra care they needed<br />

last year including dogs with injuries, infections, dental issues, and<br />

other treatable conditions. Jim and Bet Schuler pledged $130,000 to<br />

start the fund, named in memory of their dog Lexus.<br />

Keith D. Grinstein Memorial Fund<br />

The Keith D. Grinstein Memorial Fund allows us to provide medical<br />

care to shelter cats to make them adoptable. Thanks to the<br />

Grinstein Fund, we were able to give 110 cats the extra care they<br />

needed last year, including cats with injuries, infections, dental<br />

issues, and other treatable conditions. The Grinstein Fund was<br />

started by a group of friends in honor of Keith D. Grinstein, an<br />

animal lover who died unexpectedly in 2008.<br />

PawPrints <strong>Society</strong><br />

The PawPrints Planned Giving <strong>Society</strong> consists of generous individuals who have remembered the <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> <strong>Society</strong><br />

in their estate plans through wills, insurance policies or other planned gifts.<br />

Dear <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong>,<br />

We just wanted to write to let you know<br />

how much we love Lilly, who we adopted<br />

one month ago, after she had been at<br />

<strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> for almost six months.<br />

She is a beautiful, gracious kitty, who<br />

makes quiet little rumbling sounds when<br />

she is waiting for treats. She has made<br />

friends with our other kitties, and with<br />

anyone who comes to visit. She picked<br />

out her favorite chairs and couches for<br />

naps right away!<br />

Thank you for taking such good care<br />

of Lilly while she was with you. The<br />

adoption supervisors who helped me with<br />

the adoption process were wonderful and<br />

gave Lilly a big hug goodbye. I could tell<br />

that they loved her, too!<br />

Rainey Becomes a Princess<br />

Rainey, a 5-year-old Siberian Husky/Chow Chow mix,<br />

was surrendered to <strong>Seattle</strong> <strong>Humane</strong> because her owners<br />

could not give her the care she deserved. Rainey was in<br />

deplorable shape. She had severe skin allergies, mange,<br />

ear and skin infections, and masses on her body. We<br />

placed Rainey in foster care where she received medical<br />

treatment.<br />

BEFORE: Rainey was suffering from a terrible skin condition.<br />

Over several months, Rainey slowly recovered. Her thick<br />

fur grew back in and revealed a beautiful dog inside and<br />

out! Her foster family renamed her “Princess” Rainey in<br />

honor of her incredible transformation. When she had<br />

fully recovered<br />

that she had<br />

a home with<br />

Phoebe’s Story<br />

Phoebe, a 7-year-old Jack Russell Terrier<br />

mix, was surrendered to <strong>Seattle</strong><br />

<strong>Humane</strong> when her owners fell ill and<br />

could no longer care for her. During<br />

an examination by our vet staff, we<br />

discovered that Phoebe is deaf. While<br />

most shelters would consider an older<br />

dog with a disability unadoptable,<br />

we knew that Phoebe just needed a<br />

chance to meet her special someone.<br />

We gave Phoebe the love and attention<br />

she needed to thrive at the shelter,<br />

and some extra one-on-one time<br />

in our volunteer Foster Care Program,<br />

until one day a gentleman named Carl<br />

came in to meet her.<br />

Smitten, Carl continued to visit Phoebe,<br />

while studying how to care for and<br />

train a deaf dog. He finally decided he<br />

was up for the challenge and adopted<br />

her a few weeks later! Carl writes,<br />

“Phoebe is the love of my life. Everyone<br />

who meets her finds her totally<br />

charming... she just wants to cuddle<br />

and be right next to you. Thank you<br />

for introducing her to me and allowing<br />

her to become part of my life.”<br />

We gave Phoebe a chance to meet her special someone.<br />

Hello!<br />

A couple of weeks ago I adopted Bisky<br />

& Boomy, two 16-year-old sisters (since<br />

renamed Celie & Nettie — from “The<br />

Color Purple”). I just wanted to drop you<br />

a line and let you know that they’re doing<br />

really great. They adjusted very fast...<br />

no hiding time at all! They can’t seem<br />

to get enough attention, or food, and<br />

enjoy spending a lot of time just lounging<br />

around on comfy surfaces.<br />

all those months so that they could bless<br />
