PERMIT #137
IT’S THAT TIME
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
This is the time of year when you may hear the pitter patter of tiny feet in
your attic or chitter chatter in your walls or chimneys. It’s baby season in the
world of wildlife. The most likely animals that may be using your home or
out-buildings as a nesting site are raccoons and squirrels. If you’re hearing
activity during the day it’s probably a squirrel. Raccoons are nocturnal and
are active at night. If you have a raccoon “renting” from you, it’s best if you
can leave her alone for a few weeks. When the babies are old enough, she
will move out on her own taking her babies with her. If you’d like to strongly
encourage her to leave, in the evening you can place a loud radio, bright
lights and unpleasant smells (vinegar is good) in the attic or at the base of
your chimney. This will create an unpleasant environment for her.
If you hear noises in your walls, tap gently where you’re hearing the noise.
If the animal is able to, this should scare them out. If you continue to hear
the noise, this may mean a baby is stuck. Seek professional help for removal
but make sure you hire a company that will work to try to reunite the mother
and baby. Trapping only mothers or removing babies without the mother is
cruel and inhumane. Not all animal control companies are alike so do your
research. Ask questions. Get specifics on how the animals will be handled.
Will the animal be killed and if so, why? Are there offspring that will be orphaned
or abandoned? Insist on humane techniques. If you need assistance
finding a humane animal control company, give TWRC Wildlife Center a call.
The best way to prevent attic guests is to inspect your home for entry points and
block them. Make sure, however, that there are no animals in your attic or walls
before you do this. Look over, under and around your roof area. If you find openings,
repair them.
Remember, although animals may be unwelcomed guests, they are only
looking for a dry, quiet, safe place to give birth and care for their little ones
until they’re old enough to be on their own - just like us.
TWRC Wildlife Center is a Houston-based wildlife rehabilitation and education
center available to anyone needing assistance with wildlife. Check our
website at www.twrcwildlifecenter.org or call 713-468-TWRC and don’t forget
to donate so we can continue to help wildlife as we’ve done for 36 years.
GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate
a great many pests that die from various causes while
in the bag. When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to
your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc…
Spend a little more on bagged material and save lots of future
pest problems. Keep your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the
top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will
aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and
accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants
at least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create
a plant free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home.
The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab
as long as you keep it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The
most conducive to termite infestation are groundcover plantings,
growing high against your homes exterior or (especially)
ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring
spray eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing
trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual
pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer,
prevents most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts
your valuable asset off to a healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment
to stop brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If
your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here are some
important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c)
weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more
- then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper,
stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
FULSHEAR HIGH SCHOOL NEW LOGO
On Friday, Feb. 19 th , Fulshear High School
Principal Daniel Ward revealed the logo
for the newest Lamar CISD high school
- Fulshear High School. “We wanted
something different from the other District
mascots,” Ward said. “I think we’ve hit the
mark.” The new logo will set an identity for
the campuses noting that Leaman Junior
High will have the same mascot. “From
grades six through 12, these kids will be Chargers,” Ward
said. “We are one. Once a Charger, always a Charger.”
The logo, featuring a fierce horse, with a body that tails
off into a lightning bolt, was designed by a graphic artist.
Ward, Leaman Principal Mike Semmler, Oschler Flemming,
Fulshear High’s athletic coordinator and Socorro Torres,
Ward’s administrative assistant, took part in the process of
finalizing the logo. “This is actually the fifth or sixth version,”
he said. “But this one really pops!” Ward said spirit wear will
be available in May.
ery, both 8 th graders at Briscoe, will
compete with 300 other Houston-area
art pieces.
“This contest is an extension of the
adult art show, Bayou City Art Festival.
This festival brings in artists from all
over the U.S. The middle school contest
was open to Houston and surrounding
communities. For our students to have
won two finalist place in this group is
amazing,” said BJH art teacher, Audrey
Fuege. With history in various other art
competitions students compete, this
is only the second year anyone from
Briscoe has entered this contest and
the first time students will be featured.
“We are very proud of our two Briscoe
students and can’t wait to see how they
compete in this festival,” Fuege said.
The girls were chosen to be a part of
this competition based on their creativity
and detail. When the passion is
there, all it takes is a little push from
someone with a similar passion. “I
wanted to share my love of art with
my students just like my teacher did
for me,” Fuege said. Their art work
will be displayed at the Bayou City Art
Festival in late April in Memorial Park,
Houston. Article submitted by Emma
TAX DEDUCTIONS
As Americans fire up their laptops and desktops to get another e-filing season under
way, the following is a look at six of the most popular tax deductions to consider as
you get ready to crunch the numbers:
1. Mortgage interest deduction: Unless you bought your home with cash or have paid
off the mortgage, this tax deduction is probably a big one for you. It can save you
thousands of dollars in tax payments. According to the IRS, taxpayers can deduct home
mortgage interest if they meet two conditions: First, they must file a form 1040 and
itemize deductions on Schedule A. Second, the mortgage must be secured debt on a
qualified home that an individual owns.
2. Student loan interest deduction: To claim the deduction
for 2015, you need to meet the following conditions:
• You have paid interest on a qualified student loan in tax year 2015.
• You are legally obligated to pay interest on a qualified student loan.
• Your filing status is not married filing separately.
• If filing jointly, the taxpayer or his spouse cannot
be claimed as dependents on someone else’s return.
• The loan was taken solely to pay qualified higher education expenses.
3. Real estate taxes deduction: Homeowners can use one form of tax to offset another.
Remember to deduct real estate taxes paid on real property you own -- including state,
local or foreign taxes. To claim the deduction, make sure the taxes are based on the
assessed value of the property.
4. Tax-loss-harvesting deduction: Simply put, loss harvesting is selling securities at a
loss to offset a capital gains tax liability. That might sound a bit odd, but consider that
ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’
yards. If your pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop
and trash. Come with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or
anything else. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your
pet, but it does show your respect for every homeowner and our
beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated
for rabies, registered and restrained. All animals, when outside
of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in a fenced back yard),
must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please use
all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes
when walking pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL
YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see ANY animal roaming
freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control at
281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful
approaching it, as you do not know how it will react; if you
can safely retrieve the animal, then call the owner. Otherwise,
Animal Control is your best and safest option
DECIBELLES (A BARBERSHOP CHORUS)
Do you like to sing? Are you looking for a place to display your
talents or just to have fun with music? You should be a Decibelle!
We are a (ladies only) daytime chorus rehearsing every Friday
morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, at the Treemont Retirement
Center, 2501 Westerland, near Westheimer and Gessner.
Some of us read music, but it is not required. We are provided
a CD to help in learning new songs. Our director, Martha Upton
and assistant director, Cay Eckland will help you find out if you
are a Tenor, Lead, Baritone or Bass.
We have been performing in the Houston area for over 38 years.
We prepare two types of shows each year; a Christmas show
with old favorites, but always a new fun tune including props,
narratives and choreography. Our regular show this year is
titled “Through the Years” We are singing songs from 1900 and
every decade after that. If your meeting, gathering or any type
“get together” would like a half hour of cheerful and melodic
entertainment, call the Decibelles. We’ll be there in costume
with a program of sheer delight.
Come visit any Friday we are not performing. We would love
to see you and if you decide to join us, we would be delighted.
For more information, please call Pat at 281-497-4904 or visit
our website, www.Decibelles.org.
GRACE NOTES
Singers, dancers and Instrumentalists are invited to join the
“Grace Notes” a performing group which shares music with the
elderly in retirement homes, Alzheimer’s and nursing facilities
and community events. We sing a combination of secular, patriotic
and sacred music. We also sing once a month on Sunday
morning for the congregation of St. Peter’s UMC. We rehearse
during the school year on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 AM at
St. Peter’s UMC. Babysitting is provided. Tuesday mornings
are also our “outing” days to perform in the community. Come
and join this fun and wonderful music ministry. Please contact
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property
to patrol and remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and
inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your
dog. If your dog is one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you
must make every effort to respect your Neighbor’s right to their
‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep
your dog on a leash at all times. While your dog is friendly to
you and your family, imagine the consequences if it were to harm
someone while it was ‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area
ground without fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined
to their property or kept on a leash to free a community of
unrestrained and free-roaming animals. Although most dog
bites occur on the property where the dog lives, unrestrained
or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public.
In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being
bitten by rabies infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws
is essential in enhancing the animal control program’s efforts
to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should
that animal become lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the animal
control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats
because they are an important control measure for the public
health threat of rabies. In addition to protecting pets, rabies
vaccinations provide a barrier between infected wild animals
and humans.
RUOK PROGRAM
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Dept. has a computer-generated
program called “Are You OK?” (RUOK). It is a computergenerated
call intended for senior citizens (over 55) and
disabled persons who live alone and could benefit from a
daily check. A computer will generate a call each morning,
at about the same time and the participant chooses a time
frame. A voice will ask, “Are you OK?” After this, all they
have to do is hang up the phone. If the participant goes
out of town or leaves the residence for any time, you just
temporarily un-subscribe and re-subscribe when you return.
30 April 2016 Bella Terra
If the call goes unanswered, the computer will call back 3
times at 15-minute intervals. If there is still no answer, the
Sheriff will dispatch a deputy or the local police. They will
have with them a print out of information on the person that
is not responding to the calls. This program was established
by FBC Sheriff Milton Wright, Commissioner’s Court and
Ken Whitt (FBC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy Alumni Assoc.) in
1998. Many police chiefs in the county are also participating
in the program and will proceed with the welfare check for
citizens of their community. To request more information or
to enroll in this free and very beneficial program, please call
the Sheriff’s Dept. at 281-341-4704.
