GARDENING TIPS FOR APRIL 

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a 

great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. When 

you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you are also 

buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more on bagged 

material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at 

least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/ 

side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow for 

quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 

12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free 

zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception is your 

lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep it 4” - 6” 

below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite infestation 

are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior 

or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray 

eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to 

resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The 

fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi 

from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a 

healthy winter’s dormancy.

SALUTE TO OUR HEROES GALA 

On February 13, 2016, the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) 

held its 8 th Annual Salute to Our Heroes Gala at the Omni Hotel 

Houston Westside raising over $100,000 to benefit graduating 

seniors from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD. 

Cypress Woods High School AFJROTC was chosen to Present 

the Colors and the Missing Man Table and Honors Ceremony. Tina 

Clinkenbeard, CFISD Teacher, sang the National Anthem. State 

Representative Allen Fletcher gave the invocation and Senior Ryan 

Lancaster, from Cy-Fair High School, played TAPS. 

Kevin “Dauber” Lacz, former Navy SEAL sniper and combat medic 

was our guest speaker for the evening. Lacz spoke from the heart 

about his experiences as a Navy SEAL and the impact his service 

in the military had on his life. As a Certified Physician Assistant, 

Lacz uses his past experiences to facilitate his work in medicine and 

charity and actively seeks to support service members and veterans 

in his community. Lacz inspired us all with his motivational story, 

winning attitude and continued commitment to service. 

Joe Myers Ford Lincoln generously underwrote this year’s Salute 

to Our Heroes Gala and we are grateful that they have agreed to 

underwrite this event in 2017. Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center 

Hospital and North Cypress Medical Center were Major General 

Sponsors this year. Salute to Our Heroes has raised more than half 

a million dollars over the past eight years, funding several endowed 

scholarships for students graduating from the Cypress Fairbanks ISD.

annual Butterfly Family Festival on Sunday, April 24 th , 12-3 PM

barbecue lunch, a silent auction, a raffle, games and activities for 

all ages. Raffle items include a large Tundra 75 Yeti Cooler and a 

Weber Q2200 Propane Grill in red and other great items. The silent

The Daisy Dash 5K Fun Run and Kids 1 Mile Run will be held 

Saturday, April 23, 2016, at the Jersey Village Park Pavilion in 

Jersey Village, Texas. The route will start at the park and meander 

around the lovely neighborhoods of Jersey Village then pick up at 

the hike and bike trail which loops back around to the park for the 

finish line. 

The timed 5K will start at 8 AM. Awards will be given to the top 

runners in each age group as well as to the top overall finishers. The 

Kids 1 Mile Run will start at 9:30 AM. 



The Daisy Dash 5K Fun Run is hosted and sponsored by Chapter 

FD, Houston, TX of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. P.E.O. is a Philanthropic 

Educational Organization that celebrates and supports the education 

and advancement of women. 

The event is open for both male and female runners of all ages 

and running abilities. Everyone who enters will get a tech shirt 

and kids that finish the 1 mile Fun Run will get a finishers medal.

CAMP CORNERSTONE 

IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER 

FOR AGES 2 THROUGH COMPLETION OF 4 TH GRADE! 

Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp facilitated by Cornerstone 

United Methodist Preschool and is for children ages 2 through the 

completion of 4 th grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2016. Camp 

hours are 9:30 AM-1 PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the 

summer and you are invited to participate in any or all! 

Session I: The American Spirit is June 13 th -17 th 

Session II: Princesses and Pirates is July 11 th -15 th 

Session III: Under the Sea is August 1 st -5 th 

The cost per camp per child is $120. You may pay $60 now and the 

remaining $60 on the first day of camp. Registration forms are online 

or in the preschool office. To download a form from the Cornerstone

You will see a tab for Camp Cornerstone. You can print the form and 

have it filled out before you arrive, saving yourself time! Before each
