Congratulations Dear Participant!
You were chosen among the fastest, the strongest, the smartest and the funniest
psychology students from around Europe, to be part of this crew and to sail with
us across the ocean of emotions.
The following document is our crew’s logbook, which records a brief
introduction to what we expect to be the journey of your lifetime.
Please follow the instructions and familiarise yourself with the information
given. Should you have any queries, feel free to contact us via email.
Our crew is waiting for you with open arms and we are working on making your
stay here as comfortable and enjoyable as possible!

Welcome to
Portugal
“Our little corner planted by the sea…”
You may not believe us, but Portugal is the prettiest country in the world, and
you will probably find this out for yourself during your stay here.
Portugal, which is the most western country located in Europe, bordered by
the Atlantic Ocean (west and south) and by Spain (north and east), was not
always as we know it today.

Many years ago your ancestors may have been here; the Celts, Romans,
Visigoths, Moors and Germans were attracted by the smell of the sea and the
wealth of our land; they all saw Portugal as the ideal location to conquer. With
its face turned towards the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal is still a country full of
opportunities.
Looking towards the future, the Portuguese, still
young and thirsty for knowledge, took their
caravels and sailed to different parts of the
world. We defeated the Adamastor - a terrible
sea monster, discovered tropical Brazil, went
to India and brought great spices to flavour our
famous dishes. In these ways, among others, we
show the world that a small country is capable of
great things!
After facing multiple challenges, Portugal was
built to be one of the most paradisiacal places.
The Portuguese have the art of receiving and
welcoming our visitors in the best of
manners. Equipped with different landscapes,
cultures and heritage, our country
incorporates different parts of the world, making
the travelling experience much more enriching.

Portugal is a perfect holiday destination all year round, with many historical sites
just short distances away and an exceptional range of different landscapes, which
together are a blend of tradition and modernity.
In Portugal the best ideas come forth around a
table filled with good food, exquisite wine and
awesome friends, where sometimes only the
dawn awakens us to the outside world. Its unique
cuisine, fine wines, leisure activities and hospitality
make Portugal a paradise of the highest quality.

(Almost) Everything you need to know...
Venue and accommodation
The 30th EFPSA Congress will be hosted at the Golf Mar Vimeiro Resort,
beautifully located at the top of Maceira’s beach cliff, in Torres Vedras.
The venue is situated approximately 50km from Lisbon and offers great views
and landscapes that invite us to contemplate about the extraordinary West Coast
beauty.

With access to three different beaches, Porto Nova, Santa Rita and Santa Cruz,
the location invites the guests to take a breath of fresh air and enjoy all that
nature has to offer.
One of the most exquisite views can be seen from the
panoramic restaurant within the venue
itself, where you can also taste all the
delicious flavours that the
traditional Portuguese cuisine
has to offer.
Ensuring a pleasant and
comfortable stay,
accommodation will be
provided in double
rooms, all of which have
an ensuite bathroom,
satellite television, hair
dryer and air-conditioning.
The Ô Hotel Golf Mar has 18
meeting rooms, which can
accommodate up to 1000 people, and are
equipped with air conditioning, wireless
Internet access, flipcharts and screens.

Furthermore, the venue also offers a variety of services and a wide range of
outdoor activities such as golf, horseback riding, tennis, diving, surfing and
hiking.
Guests also receive access to the indoor heated swimming pools, outdoor
swimming pools, the spa, the fitness centre and a games room, where you can
find an arcade, billiard and ping-pong tables. Additionally, the venue also
provides free internet access throughout.

The Rules
The rules apply to everyone! We are all in this together.
1. As per hotel policy, a deposit of 20€ is required at check-in. This amount
will be refunded at checkout if no damages have been caused;
2. Do not smoke indoors, except after midnight at the disco; the venue is a
hotel with a non smoking policy;
3. Please follow the timetable – punctuality is extremely important;
4. After conducting or attending a workshop or a lecture, please leave the
room in an orderly manner – help us keep the rooms clean and welcoming;
5. Noise should be kept to a minimum between 22:00 and 08:00 – Kindly
show respect and consideration towards others who may be sleeping;
6. Take care of your belongings - Org.Com will not be held responsible for
replacing valuables that have been lost, damaged or stolen;
7. The Portuguese legislation prohibits the provision, sale and consumption
of alcoholic beverages to minors - Identity documents should always be
carried with you;
8. Do not destroy the property of the venue. If any damage occurs, please
report it to a member of the Org.Com or at the Info Point immediately -
Damages caused by you will be your responsibility;
9. Any malfunctions related to the property of the venue and its associated
facilities should be reported to an Org.Com member or at the Info Point;

10. It is not allowed for more than 4 people to be within the hotel rooms at
one time;
11. Rooms at the hotel can be cleaned on a daily basis. If you wish to have your
room cleaned, please make sure to exit the room by 12:00. If you do not
want your room to be cleaned, please place the appropriate sign outside
your door. However, please note that after 2 days, the housekeeper is
obliged to enter the room and clean it as per hotel policy;
12. Compliance with the rules regarding the use of a swimming cap and the
prohibition of diving is expected when using the indoor swimming pool;
13. When you leave your room on the last day, make sure that it is emptied of
all litter and you have not left any personal belongings behind;
14. Drugs are illegal in Portugal, therefore, possession, use and/or sale will
be reported to the Portuguese Police;
15. Remember to have fun and learn as much as you can during your week
here in Portugal.

The Scientific Programme
From the very first breath of life, emotions produce all kinds of actions in our
everyday lives. Alongside our individual mental processes, emotions are the
engine of our social interactions, whether in family, social or work contexts. Due
to their complex nature, it has been a challenge to unveil all the mysteries
surrounding the essence of emotions. How do we express them so differently
from somebody else? How is the way we express them different from people in
other countries and cultures? Can we feel love and hate at the same time? What
about pleasure and disgust? What is the role of grief in our lives? What is the
relationship between odours, criminals and emotions? Can we evolve
emotionally?
So many questions, so many feelings…
in the end we ask“How does it make you feel?”
The scientific team of the 30 th EFPSA Congress has prepared a unique experience
for all those in attendance. We will have some of the best worldwide speakers
discussing emotions. However, the team wants to know about your research too!

Professional Programme
Our professional programme will include researchers, college
professors and practitioners from Europe and the USA, who will be
delivering presentations in the form of lectures and roundtable
discussions, together with workshops on various topics within their
fields of expertise. we believe that the professional programme is
comprised of a rich and diverse scientific schedule including areas such
as neurophysiology, self-compassion, facial recognition among others
,through which participants can explore and learn more about the
topic of emotions from different perspectives.
Student Programme
Students’ active participation is always an enriching experience that
provides student researchers the opportunity to share their research
and knowledge with their peers. It is also a great opportunity for
participants to gain an insight into recent research within different
fields of psychology. In order to guarantee that this week will be filled
with memorable moments of scientific and cultural exchange, we have
selected a number of paper presentations, posters and workshops,
from a number of student researchers across Europe, that will
definitely spark your interest.
Training Sessions
One of the most engaging parts of the Scientific Programme is the
Training Sessions organised by the EFPSA Trainers Community. Every
year, EFPSA Trainers provide participants with several interesting and
immersive trainings that complement the theme of the Congress and
complete the Scientific Programme. This year is no exception! The
participants are welcome to join in and discover a diverse selection of
topics ranging from mindfulness and public speaking to conflict
strategies and nonverbal communication. These trainings will surely
ignite your scientific curiosity in a unique, creative and informal
manner and facilitate personal development and self exploration.
Symposia
EFPSA Symposia provide participants with the great opportunity to
expand or update their knowledge about hot research topics related to
emotions. In each symposium you will have the opportunity to watch
and discuss several oral presentations regarding particular key findings
related to the topic at hand. You will have several opportunities to attend
and share your views and opinions with both

the speakers and
participants. In fact, EFPSA Symposia can provide you with a privileged
channel for information exchange with the speakers about your topics of
interest, or even the chance to establish research partnerships.

Keynote Speakers
Daniel Salzman
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at
Columbia University
Daniel Salzman is in possession of a PhD in Neuroscience from
Stanford University and has specialised in the topic of the
neural basis of cognitive and emotional behaviour. At the 30 th
EFPSA Congress, he will be talking about the Brain, Learning
and Emotions.
Karen Quigley
Co-Director | Interdisciplinary Affective Science
Laboratory at NEU University, Boston
Karen Quigley has a PhD in Psychobiology from the Ohio
State University and her main areas of expertise are
Psychophysiology and Health Psychology. At the 30th
EFPSA Congress, she will be talking about the basics of
peripheral psychophysiological measurements for affective
scientists.
Daniel Reisel
PhD in Neuroscience at Oxford University|Researcher
at University College of London
Daniel Reisel completed his PhD degree in Neuroscience in
2005 at Oxford University, investigating how learning
rewires the brain. At the 30th EFPSA Congress, he will be
discussing the concept of rewiring morality: Can morality and
empathy be learnt?

The Social Programme
Throughout this Congress, the Social Programme has been built upon the theme
of the Portuguese Sailing tradition, which is one of our cultural and historical
highlights, mainly during XV and XVI centuries. This way, one of our main goals
is to provide you with a continuous atmosphere of sailors, pirates and unknown
lands. From the moment you step onto Portuguese land and board our
enchanting Portuguese ship, until the farewell of this adventure, the Social Crew
will be responsible for ensuring social interaction, fun, new experiences,
knowledge, sensation, tastes and horizons. In fact, these gracious sailors will not
allow anyone to lose their good spirit and enthusiasm!
In order to achieve all this and more, the Social Team has named each day
according to this theme, in order to create a unique identity for each day. Fun
Activities will be presented during the week, along with amazing evenings, and
a true fully Portuguese experience during the one day excursion and the new
innovative concept of The Talent Creation!

1 st May: Welcome Aboard Day
This will be the first day of your journey on this ship, where you will
have the first contact with the crew, all the other passengers and with
the Portuguese sea breeze! The energy will be running high and we
promise you, not a promised land, but a friendly and good
atmosphere to initiate the conquest of new experiences, knowledge,
and emotions
2 nd May: Ice Breaker & Cultural Evening
We all know that if we do not want our ship to sink in the deepest waters,
we have to make all the efforts to break those enormous social icebergs
and all the ice between our crew, to make this trip as smooth and
pleasurable as possible. During the day, we will cut down the icy gap
between everyone aboard and strengthen the links between us by
connecting our stories. During the evening, are you prepared to break a
huge iceberg through a gastronomic journey, experiencing flavors from
other countries while sharing the specialties of your own? Then the
Cultural Evening is what you are looking for: meet new people, discover
traditions, foods and drinks, while you listen music from different
countries.
3 rd of May: “The Captain’s Day”
The Captain of this ship is Tuga, the man with a huge Portuguese soul!
During this day prepare yourself to experience, feel and taste the
wonders of Portugal. This evening is dedicated to the unveiling of
Portuguese History and what the term “Portuguese Spirit” means to all
the passengers. Moreover, throughout the evening programme, you will
realise how rich and powerful our traditional music is. Additionally, you
will get to know rhythms that you would not have expected to be linked
to Portugal.
4 th of May: “The Pirate’s Day”
After many dives into the warm blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and a
nap beneath the sun, prepare yourself to become a pirate superstar! Are
you ready for a treasure hunt? Do you want to explore new lands by
doing reiki, or just build your own port with fine sand on the beach? Do
you know how to play an instrument? The International Disaster Band
is just the right event for you; choose your “weapon”,

pick your fellow
pirates and be part of a crew that motivates and energises an amazing
crowd who are prepared to cheer for new superstars.

5 th of May: “New Lands Day”
This one day excursion is more than just a trip. It is designed to be a
sensitive experience, where you will have the chance to feel different
moments, activate your senses and release your emotions, We will first
have a “one of a kind” tasting experience: a guided trip to the Quinta do
Sanguinhal Vineyard. Expect a fun and interesting learning experience
on the roots of the Portuguese wine culture. Secondly, the ships will
disembark at Alcobaça Monastery, were you where you will find one of
the most passionate love stories: Pedro and Inês de Castro. In the
afternoon, you will be welcomed at Óbidos, the famous castle village;
where you will find charming and unexpected places to explore that are
full of surprises. Finally, you will experience the cozy and traditional
atmosphere of the Portuguese culture around a dinner table.
6 th of May: “Glowing Emotions Evening”
At this point, we have reached the peak of the journey and emotions are
running high on the ship as we go through an area where the sea breeze
can cause the sailors to hallucinate. Our advice and orders from the
Captain is that you should let yourself go during this passage and take
the opportunity to show and release all your emotions; but save some of
them, for the remaining journey. Enter the most amazing party spirit
that has ever existed in the ocean. Wear a white shirt and using the ink
provided, decorate it throughout the night in ways that express your
soul. Free yourself and feel the power of the EFPSA spirit at this Glowing
Emotions Party! Be creative and give color to your ship on this evening
but remember that tomorrow is another day full of sailing!
7 th of May: “The Prom Day”
Land in sight! Wow what a journey! I bet you learned to sail through
these deep waters of emotions, had unforgettable experiences, and had
to overcome some obstacles across these seas. So now that you have
become a real sailor, you are invited to be part of the EFPSA family. So
suit up and enjoy a classy and glamorous evening. Dance with your
partner and enjoy your evening. Let all your emotions run free while
saluting the EFPSA History. Vote in the different categories and watch
the delivery of the EFPSA Oscars… maybe you will get one of those

Deposit and Responsibility Term
The deposit (€20) is a requirement from the venue. This money will be fully
refunded at check out if no losses or damages have occurred in your room. You
will be asked to read and sign a term of responsibility form, making you fully
responsible for all your actions during the Congress and for respecting the
rules of the venue.
Therefore, it is important to read the rules thoroughly and respect them at all
times.
Currency
The local currency in Portugal is the Euro (€).
You can exchange money at banks, which are open from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m., five
working days a week; at bureau de change, etc. Portugal has a national network
of cash machines (ATMs) identified by the symbol MB (Multibanco), from
which you can withdraw cash 24 hours a day.
There is an ATM machine at the venue!

The Organising Committee will provide ‘EFPSA Buses’ for you.
These buses will follow different schedules from Lisboa Oriente to the venue on
the first day and back from the venue to Lisboa Oriente or Lisbon Airport on the
last day. You will be (or have been) asked to fill in information about your arrival
and departure; the schedule of the buses will be determined on this information.
Please note that this service is paid by the participants themselves.

Buses’, as the public transportation to the venue is more expensive, time

The taxis have a fixed special price to the venue and would cost €30. This price
is based per taxi which has a maximum capacity of four individuals, therefore, if
you travel alone, you will pay the same amount. IMPORTANT! Please note that
there is no other public transportation from Torres Vedras to the venue.

The Organising
Committee
The Organising Committee or Org.Com represents the group of people who are
responsible for organising the 30 th EFPSA Congress, and is composed of
psychology students from three different countries and ten universities.
The Org.Com works through the collaboration between the Scientific Team,
Social Team, Administration Team, Finance Team and Marketing Team. These
teams are composed of four to six members and are led by the Congress 2016
Coordinator. Together, we have been working on this project for two years with
professionalism, commitment, and determination to provide you an exceptional
time and an unforgettable and enjoyable experience.
