A small, sick part of us fears that the intricacies of our favourite songs will be lost once they leave the venues snug enough to stand at the back of and still see the wrinkles on a performer’s face. And while some may raise an eyebrow at the velocity with which the group’s fourth record, Blurryface, has propelled them through XLIGETEGMX]FVEGOIXW¯XLMWMWXLIMV½VWXSJX[SRMKLXW at the 5,000-ticket hall – the band respond with a performance that’s acrobatic, hyper-sensory and, perhaps most impressively, still overtly personal. Transviolet are handed the task of warming up a crowd heavily preoccupied by the thought of a different band. To their credit, the LA four-piece hold true to their dark, brooding emo-pop, and allow a sound that taps into twenty one pilots’ spookier moments, along with Sarah McTaggart’s haunting voice, to gently envelope the room. twenty one pilots allow no such subtleties. The fast spat opener Heavydirtysoul sees drummer Josh Dun and singer Tyler Joseph wearing a gruesome mask and zipped hoodie respectively, while the mic hangs from the roof like a ref’s would at a boxing match. But here, growing, it feels like these moments are seeds that are going to make TØP blossom into something phenomenal when they have the venues and the resources to realise their biggest ambitions. The understanding the band have created with their Skeleton Clique fanbase cements it all together. When a drum kit is passed into the pit so Josh can play Ride above heads, hands instinctively reach towards it. They know the drill. These grand gestures with the audience were made for the big stage. And when Tyler closes with – as he always does – “We’re twenty one pilots, and so are you,” it’s never felt more accurate.
