<strong>Plush</strong> <strong>Festival</strong><br />
This summer we bring you ano<strong>the</strong>r exciting programme <strong>of</strong><br />
classical, contemporary and jazz performances in <strong>the</strong> magical<br />
setting <strong>of</strong> St John’s, <strong>Plush</strong>.<br />
performing works by Schumann, Brahms and Mozart alongside<br />
contemporary pieces for ensemble and solo artists. Talks,<br />
Open Rehearsals, a Film screening and Cabaret show starring<br />
Zoë Martlew complement a full and very stimulating weekend.<br />
World renowned groups Trio Dali and <strong>the</strong> Doric String Quartet<br />
join us for <strong>the</strong> first time, with an inspired programme <strong>of</strong><br />
Bartók, Adès and Schubert’s Quintet completing <strong>the</strong> <strong>season</strong>.<br />

Our new ‘Encounters’ events bring <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r inspiring<br />
musicians <strong>to</strong> explore sounds from jazz and improvisation<br />
<strong>to</strong> tango and Indian tabla. Musicians include pianist Joanna<br />
MacGregor OBE and rising star Andrew McCormack,<br />
percussionist Adriano Adewale and virtuoso violinist<br />
Thomas Gould.<br />

Generation artist making his Proms debut<br />

piano duo partner and prize winning<br />
student from <strong>the</strong> Moscow conserva<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />
Samson Tsoy.<br />
They perform Igor Stravinsky’s<br />
magnificent transcription <strong>of</strong> his ‘Rite <strong>of</strong><br />
Spring’ for four hand piano and <strong>the</strong> no<br />
less technically demanding Beethoven's<br />
‘Grosse Fugue’. Two solo pieces open<br />
<strong>the</strong> concert: Beethoven’s exquisite early<br />
period sonata, and his final piano works,<br />
<strong>the</strong> cycle <strong>of</strong> six Bagatelles.<br />

Andrew McCormack. He teams with<br />
versatile violinist Thomas Gould and<br />
percussionist Bernhard Schimpelsberger<br />
in a performance embracing myriad<br />
influences from Indian tabla <strong>to</strong> classical<br />
and jazz improvisation. The event<br />

<strong>of</strong> which opens <strong>the</strong> concert. Christian<br />
Pierre La Marca performs Gaspar<br />
Cassadó’s extrovert solo suite, written<br />
in <strong>the</strong> 1920s. And violinist Jack Liebeck<br />
joins forces with Adrian Brendel<br />
for Martinů’s eccentric and rarely<br />

Trio Dali formed in 2006, winning<br />
several major prizes that established<br />
<strong>the</strong> group on <strong>the</strong> concert scene. Their<br />
recordings <strong>of</strong> Schubert, and most<br />
recently <strong>of</strong> Mendelssohn trio’s have<br />
been universally praised. They perform<br />
from <strong>the</strong>se recordings alongside a piece<br />
by Anglo-Australian composer, pianist<br />
and conduc<strong>to</strong>r Roger Smalley (1943-<br />
2015). Having studied with Boulez and<br />
S<strong>to</strong>ckhausen in <strong>the</strong> 1960s, Smalley<br />
developed a truly original musical voice<br />
that wasn't afraid <strong>to</strong> experiment. His Trio<br />
<strong>of</strong> 1991 is a case in point, one <strong>of</strong> three<br />
works based on <strong>the</strong> mazurkas <strong>of</strong> Chopin.

connection with Knussen’s music as<br />
dedicatees and first performers, many<br />

<strong>Plush</strong>. Celebrated soprano Claire Booth<br />
joins us for <strong>the</strong> first time, alongside<br />
oboist Melinda Maxwell and multitalented<br />
performer Zoë Martlew.<br />
Oliver Knussen’s music is as refined<br />
as his conducting, full <strong>of</strong> colour and<br />

Brahms’ piano quartet is a much loved<br />
staple <strong>of</strong> festival programmes, while<br />
Debussy’s violin sonata establishes <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>to</strong>ne for <strong>the</strong> atmosphere <strong>of</strong> Oliver<br />
Knussen's music with its own radical and<br />
taut form. Knussen's two short works are<br />
full <strong>of</strong> wonderful material. 'Ophelia's Last<br />
Dance' sets a series <strong>of</strong> dance fragments<br />
around a recurring piano <strong>the</strong>me, while <strong>the</strong><br />
‘Whitman Settings’ for soprano and piano<br />
reimagine a familiar genre with fresh ears,<br />
musing on things in space or sky.

makes regular appearances as performer<br />

Uproarious, moving, sexy and <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong><br />
wall, Revue Z features her <strong>the</strong>atrical<br />
compositions for cello, voice and prerecorded<br />
soundtrack in a dazzling array<br />
<strong>of</strong> musical styles.<br />
The expressionist intensity <strong>of</strong> Richard Strauss' Ophelia Songs set<br />
<strong>the</strong> scene, followed by a trio <strong>of</strong> works by Knussen, including his<br />
great Cantata for oboe quartet. Alban Berg’s Opus 2 songs (1910)<br />
were written at <strong>the</strong> cusp <strong>of</strong> him abandoning <strong>to</strong>nality. In contrast,<br />
Schumann’s exuberant quintet returns us <strong>to</strong> a romantic world <strong>of</strong><br />
unfettered melody and good spirits. It was written for his wife Clara<br />
and premiered with Mendelssohn at <strong>the</strong> piano.

combines his imaginative percussion<br />
skills with Joanna MacGregor’s<br />

Brendel’s sonorous cello. Following <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
first encounter at Darting<strong>to</strong>n <strong>Festival</strong> in<br />
2015, <strong>the</strong>y reunite at <strong>Plush</strong> with a new<br />
addition; virtuoso accordionist Martynas<br />
Levickis. They will explore improvisations<br />
related <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> tango and o<strong>the</strong>r forms,<br />
showcasing <strong>the</strong>ir skills individually and<br />
collectively.

Quartet. Their programme is one <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> most exciting <strong>to</strong> date pairing<br />
Bartók’s extraordinary String Quartet<br />
No. 4 with ‘The Four Quarters’ by<br />
Thomas Adès. This bold and mysterious<br />
piece explores four different times<br />
<strong>of</strong> day through complex rhythms<br />
and textures, culminating in final<br />
movement The Twenty-fifth Hour.
