The <strong>Yemen</strong>i executive branch consists of a president, a prime minister and a cabinet. The president is<br />
directly elected; he appoints the prime minister, with legislative approval. <strong>Yemen</strong> has a two-part<br />
legislature, with a 301-seat lower house, the House of Representatives, and an 111-seat upper house,<br />
called the Shura Council.<br />

Lieutenant-Colonel Ibrahim al-Hamdi was the leader of a military coup d'etat in <strong>Yemen</strong> Arab Republic<br />
that overthrew the regime of President Abdul Rahman al-Iryani on June 13, 1974<br />

After the revolt, he was President of the Military Command Council that governed the country. During<br />
his rule, he cemented the central government's control over the country, planned on ending tribal<br />
loyalty, and <strong>Yemen</strong>'s medieval social classes by proclaiming all <strong>Yemen</strong>is as equal.<br />
Al-Hamdi's civil and economic policies helped bring <strong>Yemen</strong> into the 21st Century by building hundreds<br />
of new schools and eleven hospitals countrywide as well as the paving of more than 2,000 roads, He<br />
also planned on improving ties with Marxist People's Democratic Republic of <strong>Yemen</strong>. Upon this<br />
assasination Ahmad bin Hussein al-Ghashmi (1938 –1978) took charge as the President of the <strong>Yemen</strong><br />
Arab Republic from 11 October 1977 until his death eight months later. Ghashmi himself was<br />
