THE MYSTERY OF TEFILLIN : M. M. NINAN
____________________________________________________________________________
When to Wear Tefillin
Originally tefillin were worn all day, but not during the night.
The prevailing custom is to wear them only during the weekday morning service One should not enter unclean
places (like washing closets and toilets) wearing the tefillin.
A small minority still follow the practice of wearing tefillin all day long. This custom is mainly found among
followers of the Vilna Gaon and the Rambam, and among some Yemenite Jews. S
Tefillin are not donned on Shabbat and the major festivals because these holy days are themselves
considered "signs" .
On Chol HaMoed (intermediate days) of Pesach and Sukkot, there is a difference of opinion.
Shulchan Aruch recommends that all "G-d-fearing individuals" put on both Rashi and Rabbeinu Tam tefillin.
Putting on two pairs of tefillin is mostly prevalent among Hasidim and Sephardim, for Kabbalistic reasons
summarized by the Lubavitcher Rebbe (14 Adar II, 5736/March 16, 1976). Hasidim customarily put them on
one pair at a time, first the Rashis and then the Rabbeinu Tams. The Sephardim put on both at the same time.
Halacha accords, unanimously, with Rashi and the Rambam.
The Shulchan Aruch writes that it is acceptable for a pious person who generally strives for a higher-thanrequired
performance of mitzvos – e.g. fulfilling minority opinions, when not in conflict with the majority – to
wear both types of tefillin. Clearly, it is not possible to fulfill both opinions within one pair. How, then, does one
go about wearing two different types of tefillin?
Three options are provided:
Put on two pairs simultaneously!
