We look back on 201 5 as a great year for business opportunity,
jobs, and economic growth. Thousands of temporary and
permanent jobs helped change the economic climate of the city
and crime continued to fall precipitously. The Chamber grew
stronger by creating a President's Circle to provide support,
guidance and access to current and new business owners seeking
growth and opportunity in Inglewood. With our growth came
new staff, a new look, and a new attitude intended to embrace
every facet of our growing business community.
The Chamber added a suite of new benefits intended to foster
growth, education, sustainability and promotional opportunities
vital to the success of any business.
Now we look ahead into 201 6 with the unimaginable before
us-a Renaissance of an entire region because of the vision and
leadership of the citizens of Inglewood, the Inglewood City
Council and staff as led by Mayor James T. Butts, and courageous
business owners. The renovation of the Forum lit the
match and now a fire burns on Prairie. Hollywood Park will
house the Los Angeles Rams restoring the legacy that Inglewood
is still the City of Champions.
The future of our city cannot be brighter. It is my hope that
you might enjoy this Directory the only annually published resource,
outside of the City of Inglewood website, to consistent
and credible information about the city. It is my desire that it
might be a source of information and a tool for connection to the
shining city on a hill that we fondly refer to as the Great City of
Inglewood!
The once again fabulous Forum opened on January 1 5, 201 4,
and by December, it was the number one concert venue in the
greater Los Angeles area having doubled the number of concerts
held at the Staples Center in Downtown LA. The MTV Video Music
Awards were held at the Forum, and the City of Inglewood was
once again in the international spotlight. In 201 5, the Forum continued
its dominance in the concert venue industry. We salute Jim
Dolan, Irv Azoff and Live Nation, and Nick Spampanato for their
continued commitment to excellence.
On January 1 2, 201 6, the NFL owners voted to allow the Rams
to relocate to Inglewood, California. Construction will commence
this spring on an 80,000 seat (1 00,000 with standing room spaces
used) NFL Specification stadium. It will be the largest (3 million
square feet), most expensive (2,66 Billion dollars) arena in the
world. Hollywood Park Land Company partnered with the Kroneke
Group in a joint venture to add a sports entertainment zone to the
existing Hollywood Park Specific Plan. The plan now calls for
780,000 square feet of high end office space, 800,000 square feet
of retail and dining space, 2,500 residential units, a hotel and a
movie theater. There will be 4 public parks covering 26 acres.
Adding project to the existing plan is projected to result in 40,000
jobs during the build-out phase (6 to 7 years) and 1 2,000 permanent
fulltime and part-time jobs upon completion. Our goal is for
35% of these jobs would go to Inglewood residents. The 780,000+
square feet of retail office space is expected to house professional
corporations in part resulting in middle and upper middle class income
jobs here in Inglewood.
Work has begun on Century Blvd with a completion date in 1 8
months. A new community center, built at no cost to Inglewood
Taxpayers, is being constructed where the abandoned Thrifty Gas
Station has lain fallow for 1 7+ years at La Cienega and Fairview. It
will open by April of this year. The public private partnership (P3)
will generate revenue to the City from digital signage that will be
permitted in exchange for the use of the land along with shared
revenue from advertising fees. We expect to engage in more P3
enterprises in the future.
The Senior Center (Queen and Locust) design work has been
completed and will break ground for construction in mid-201 6 with
a completion date of November 201 7. Tom Saffron and Associates,
was selected to develop Market Street starting with the
abandoned Buffington Cadillac site at La Brea and Florence. This
Transit-Oriented Development sits across from what will be locally
known as “Champions Station” of the Metro Rail system. Some of
the project’s features include the following:
• 243 market rate workforce housing units
• 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space
• Sufficient parking to support the project
• Inviting and energetic community plazas
A renovation of the Inglewood Playhouse, which has been unusable
for in excess of 1 5 years, is being renovated at no cost to
the City. 201 6 will be another amazing year of progress in the City
of Inglewood.
