WEDNesday, April 27 Seeing the Forest and the Trees: Surviving and Thriving in the Coming Data Boom Nora Young, Host of CBC Radio’s “Spark” Orion C We generate more data all the time about our movements, habits and tastes. You may be doing it now, registering ‘likes’ on Facebook, tracking your run with a GPS-enabled monitor, logging your spending with a personal finance app. You may not even know you’re doing it. We’re on the cusp of a Data Boom, a new era in information fueled by our digital devices. The Data Boom has the power to make our personal lives and communities better, but also carries tremendous privacy risks. Drawing on her book “The Virtual Self”, and her experience as host and creator of CBC’s technology show, Spark, Nora explains how this Data Boom will change society, and what it means for individuals, businesses, and communities. Nora will be signing copies of her book in the Bookstore (Hall 2 Trade Show) immediately following her presentation. Robots and Robotic Systems – Design and Installation Considerations Based on CSA Z434-14 Robert Vomiero, B. Eng., P.Eng., CHSC, Consultant, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) Virgo A key document that all workplaces with, or considering, robot systems need to understand is the recently updated CSA Z434-14-Industrial Robots and Robot Systems Standard. This latest version of the standard, makes risk assessments priority one. The standard includes updated robot cell clearance requirements, changes to overall control system, functional safety performance criteria, new robot safety technologies associated with limiting robot motion, collaborative robot/operation requirements, an updated approach to conducting risk assessments, and other topics aimed at designing and building safety into robotic systems. This session will give an overview of the key points within the standard, and provide tips on your next steps! At-Risk Electrical Workers: New Thinking on Safety Interventions Joel Moody, MD, PhD, MPH – Director, Safety Risk, Policy and Innovation, Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) Phoenix C For over twelve years, the Ontario Electrical Safety Report (OESR) has been produced by the ESA to provide a comprehensive assessment of electrical fatalities and incidents in Ontario. Reporting data alone doesn’t save lives, but it is a great starting point for action and a yardstick to measure progress. As part of its mandate, ESA is responsible for identifying and targeting leading causes of electrical risk; raising awareness, educating and training in electrical safety; ensuring compliance with regulations; investigating fatalities, injuries and fire losses associated with electricity. Learn about the results of the OESR and why these findings point to the need to take a new approach for safety interventions and prevention strategies for these high risk workers. Working at Heights: How to Establish or Improve a Rescue Plan Barry White, Fall Protection Specialist, 3M Canada Pegasus B Touching on topics including location requirements, tool tethering, anchorage, body support, body belts vs. full body harnesses, donning and inspection procedures, and the importance of training, Barry White, Fall Protection Specialist, will offer high-level insights on the importance of using the right PPE while working at heights. Hitchhikers Guide to Human Error Corrie Pitzer, CEO, SafeMap International Vela C The ‘understanding’ of the human factor is fraught with myths and misconceptions. Human motivation is a complex but powerful force, but if people are given authority and trust, they will excel. If people understand and believe in the true purpose of safety, they will sign up. It is possible…it is called ‘deep safety’ and it is within our reach. Drug-Impaired Driving: The Current State of Knowledge and Ontario Data Lloyd W. Robertson, Team Leader, Road Safety Research Office, Ontario Ministry of Transportation Patrick A. Byrne, Senior Research Advisor, Road Safety Research Office, Ontario Ministry of Transportation Room 104 Many prescription drugs are known to have negative effects on cognitive functions that relate to driving. Cannabis is an especially important drug because its recreational use is widespread and it has recognized medical uses. We will review the current state of knowledge on the relationship between prescription medications, including cannabis, and road safety, with some emphasis on Ontario data.
