1 Welcome
Dear GAP-Participants,
welcome to the 32 nd Geophysical Activity program. We are
glad to welcome you in our beautiful city of Münster! The
GAP takes place in Münster the fourth time and again you can
look forward to a great weekend with an interesting and varying
program. We start as usually with the Ice Breaker Party where
you can establish new contacts and revive old acquaintances.
On Friday you will join the different excursions. Some of you
will start in the early morning for a long ride to the European
Space Agency (ESA) in the Netherlands. Others will stay in
Münster to visit the zoological garden or take a guided city tour
with the german author Andy Strauss and ascent the tower of
Lamberti’s church to have a spectacular view over Münster.
The athlets can go indoor climbing or take a bicycle for a ride
through the Münsterland. Another field trip goes to the world
cultural heritage ”Zeche Zollverein” in the old black coal district
Ruhrgebiet. In the evening you have the opportunity to join
the workshop which is organized in cooperation with Amnesty
International. If you want to relax you can visit one of Münster’s
many bars.
On Saturday you can listen to oral presentations of the different
research groups of the Institute of Geophysics, scientists of the
Alfred Wegener Institute and the DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für
3
Luft- und Raumfahrt). Of course you can talk to the different
representatives of companies supporting the GAP with their
sponsoring. You can inform yourself about job opportunities
and you can establish contacts. In the evening we start with
the Farewell Party. After the breakfast on Sunday you will unfortunately
travel home.
The GAP-Team wishes you an interesting and joyful weekend
with a lot of new contacts in Münster!
2 Greetings from Prof. Dr. Hansen
Dear participants of GAP 2016!
A warm welcome from the board of the Institute of Geophysics
at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster. As the
managing director of the Institute I would like to welcome you
to our Institute, to our University and to the city of Münster.
This year is truly exciting for us. After hosting the Annual
Meeting of the German Geophysical Society in March, Münster
will be the venue for the 32 nd GAP meeting in May 2016, only
three years after the last Münster GAP event in 2013. This
shows that, at least in 2016 Münster is really a hotspot for
Geophysics and further that we have an active student community,
being able to attract the GAP meeting repeatedly to
Münster.
During the meeting there will be ample opportunity to discuss
various aspects of geophysics, from studying and working
as well as doing research in geophysics.
In Münster the research activities comprise fields as different
as seismology, geodynamics and applied geophysics. This is
also reflected in the Bachelor/Master programmes. Fundamental
Geophysical Fluid Dynamics is part of the Curriculum as
well as Monitoring techniques and signal processing and ad-
5
vanced seismology topics.
These skills are taught in lectures, seminars and field courses.
“Monitoring and Modeling skills” are essential for geophysicists
to quantitatively understand structures and processes in
Geosystems, ranging from local to global scale and our programmes
aim at communicating these skills to our students.
We know how important networking nowadays is and I am
confident that the organizers of the meeting took care of the
appropriate social framework for the meeting.
I wish you a successful meeting and I hope GAP 2016 will leave
the impression that studying, performing research and living in
Münster can be both, productive and enjoyable.
Sincerely Yours,
Ulrich Hansen
Director of the Institute of Geophysics
Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster
11:00 - IDEA League Joint Master
The Joint Master’s in Applied Geophysics is a two-year joint degree
programme offered by three of Europe’s leading science and
technology institutions: Delt University of Technology, ETH
Zurich and RWTH Aachen University.
The programme builds on the strengths and the complementary
expertise in Earth Science at the three universities. It offers you
a combination of study and research, leading to an outstanding
qualification in Applied Geophysics relevant for careers in the
areas of Earth resource exploration and management (hydrocar-
23
on, geothermal) and environmental and engineering investigations.
Graduates from the programme are both immediately
attractive for positions in industry as well as well prepared for
doctoral studies in Earth sciences. During this lecture also the
process of application, advantages and disadvantages, opportunities
and stories of Idea League students will be presented.
If you are interested in applying to one of the best geophysics
programmes you should definitely be at this lecture!
11:25 - Eggers
Unexploded bombs from World War II area not underestimated
danger. Eggers ”Kampfmittelbergung” GmbH use several geophysical
methods to detect these unexploded bombs - geomagnetics,
electromagnetics and georadar. In addition to the tasks
on land they perform studies of the surface water. Apart from
geomagnetics and acustic methods are used as well.
11:50 - RG Applied geophysics (Volkmar Schmidt)
The research of the working group focuses on electromagnetic
processes and contains magnetic field measurements, improvement
of inversion process and development of new measurements.
Furthermore, they work on a combination of various
geophysical methods of measurements to explore the shallow
subsurface. Additionally, they perform measurements of magnetic
and electric features of rocks in the lab.
24
12:10 - Company session
12:45 - Lunch time supported by: TEEC
13:45 - Tombola
14:00 - DLR (Mariano Mertens) From global to regional
scale - The impact of road traffic emissions in tropospheric
ozone in Europe
The road traffic sector is an important source for percursors
(nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and nonmethane hydrocarbons)
from which troposheric ozone is formed. As the process
is highly non-linear the contribution of the road traffic sector to
tropospheric ozone can not directly be derived from the amount
of emitted species. Instead the contribution is determined also
by emissions of other anthromogenic and natural sources and
by transport processes. Therefore we use a complec chain of
a global and regional chemistry-climate model with tailormade
diagnostics to investigate the impact of road traffic emissions
on troposheric ozone in Europe and Germany. Insights in our
models/methods will be given and some results discussed.
14:25 - RG Geodynamic (Ulrich Hansen)
On small scales, sudden events like earthquakes and volcano
eruptions can lead to drastic local variations, while on long spatial
and temporal scales our habitat is shaped by the formation
25
of new mountain belts or ocean basins. The machinery behind
such processes lies within the interior of our planet. This machinery
is ultimately the driving force behind tectonic activity
and is further the mechanism which generates and maintains
the Earth’s magnetic field. We employ numerical models on
high-performance computer platforms in order to gain a better
understanding of the processes occurring in the Earth’s interior.
14:45 - Coffee break supported by: Engie
15:05 - Alfred-Wegener-Institut (Ricarda Pietsch)
The Alfred Wegener Institute is the research center for polar
and marine sciences of the Helmholtz association. Together
with numerous (inter-)national partners we are involved to decipher
the complicated processes in the ”system of earth”. Our
planet is in a radical climate change, therefore, we investigate,
which processes and interactions have been crucial for the development
of the polar environment from past to present. Geophysical
research at AWI investigates the subsurface from the
seafloor down to the earth’s mantle. We provide constraints
to better understand the role of the polar regions in tectonic
processes and the resulting environmental changes. We are interested
in long time scales, involving changes in the polar environment
over the last 160 million years. We aim to understand
the processes that control the drift of the continents, how the
opening of various oceanic gateways influenced global climate
26
on long timescales.
15:30 - EAGE t.b.a.
From 16:20 - Election of the next GAP location
9 Clubs & Bars in Münster
Cuba Nova
The Cuba Nova is located at Achtermannstr. 10, close to the
main station. During the evening it is a restaurant with good
food and fair prices. At 11:00 pm the place changes into an
awesome party place with two dance floors. The music depends
on the day, sometimes they play 90s and 2000s, on other days
it is dance charts or anything else. Entry varies between 3-5
Euros.
Gazelle
You can find Münster’s most popular party place (according to
them) at Servatiiplatz 1, also near the main station. The party
starts at 10:00 pm and is mostly for students. On Fridays it
is called the ”Party-Safari” with free entry and Happy Hour
all night long. Waiters in animal outfits will serve you shots,
popcorn and cotton candy, also you have the chance to play
beer-pong.
Heaven
The Heaven Club is located directly at the canal in the very
south of Münster. It is connected to the Coconut Beach where
you can have delicious drinks with your feet in the sand. The
29
club itself is a huge hall with an elegant but comfortable atmosphere
and you can dance to charts, house, hip hop and black
music. The Friday night special: Free entry all night long! (Entry
only for party people of age 21 or older)
Schwarzes Schaf
The club ”Schwarzes Schaf” is located in the inner city of Münster
(Alter Fischmarkt 25-26). There are two dance floors which
open according to the number of visitors. On the weekend it
is open from 8:00 pm to 3:00 am but happy hour is only until
10:00 pm. The music is mostly party hits from all times or
Apres Ski and sometimes dance charts music.
AMP
The AMP just moved to Am Hawerkamp 1 a couple of months
ago but it keeps up its old style. It is the right place to go if
you like electronic or house music but on some days you will
also have Rock, Indie, Hip Hop or 90s music there. Entry varies
between 5 and 10 Euros.
Bars
Münster is a city full of students. We have lots of bars with
cheap beer, big cocktails and the charm of a couple of student
generations. Two hotspots of the beer culture you can find at
30
Jüdefelderstr. and Kreuzstr. Both streets are next to each other
and are easy to reach by bus. Recommendable are the bars
”Himmel und Hölle” (if you want to drink cocktails) ”Cavete”
and ”Das Blaue Haus” (if you just want to relax and drink beer)
or the bar ”Destille” (which is usually quite crowded). All bars
are open until 1:00 am.
10 Important: Closure of the gym
On Friday and Saturday
sporting events take place
in the gym, so you have
to leave the gym from
10:00 am to 9:00 pm. Your
luggage can be stored in the
seminar room in the same
building. However, you can
always access your belongings
and also take a shower
at any time.
