This month, Metrowest antidrug
community coalitions are
joining together in presenting
“Hidden in Plain Sight,” a recreation
of a teen bedroom set up at
the Natick Mall designed to help
parents and other adults over 21
spot signs of substance abuse.
Specially trained “tour guides”
from MetroWest community
coalitions will walk participants
through the display, providing
education about adolescent development
and common signs of
substance use.
“The bedroom will be full of
20-30 different “warning signs”
including drug paraphernalia
and signs of other risky behavior,”
says Gina Stucchi, of
HDAAC, Holliston Drug and
Alcohol Awareness Coalition.
The display will be open to
the public on weekdays from
May 9-26, with a kickoff event
on May 10, at 10 a.m. Hours are
as follows:
Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays: 5-9 p.m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays: 10
a.m.-2 p.m.
Select weekend dates of Saturday,
May 21st and Sunday,
May 22nd, 12-4 p.m.
“During their visit, parents
will be hands-on with the display
to find hidden items. There will
also be a script to go along with
the tour of the bedroom. It’s really
an awesome display and we
are very lucky that the Natick
Mall donated the empty store
and the furniture to our cause,”
says Stucchi.
Plain Sight really opened our eyes
to some of the items we may not
think of as high risk. Some of the
items may not be risky alone, but
when multiple items are found, it
could suggest high risk behavior.
For example: Red Bull may not
be considered too risky, but if you
notice an abnormal increase in
red bull cans in your teens room
along with missed curfews and
slipping grades, then it may suggest
the Red Bull is being used to
using substances,” says Stucchi.
behavior turns into a bad habit
or lifestyle.”
Millis Begins Anti-Substance Abuse Coalition
Millis Community Awareness & Substance Education
(M.C.A.S.E.) to Educate
By J.D. O’Gara
Millis is one of the latest communities
to take steps in tackling
a growing issue of substance
abuse, and particularly opioids,
in its community. A group of
public safety, town government,
school and local organizations
have formed the Millis Community
Awareness & Substance
Education (M.C.A.S.E.)
“We are just starting, and
what we’re really trying to do
is raise awareness,” says Debbie
Hayes, Millis Lions President
this year. Other members of the
group include Millis Fire Chief
Rick Barrett, Barbara Thissell,
of Millis Board of Health,
Karen D’Angelo, Millis’ Public
Health nurse, Jen Garb Palumbo,
the Millis Middle/High
School Nurse, Diane Danehy,
Clyde F. Brown Elementary
Nurse, Derrick Finney, Millis
Middle School Health Teacher,
and Dale Bickford and Chris
Soffayer, of Millis Police. The
first event the group will hold
will be an event to educate parents.
“We need to do something
to educate our parents,” says
Millis Fire Chief Rick Barrett.
Barrett says a friend, Jim Derrick,
informed him about the
local S.A.F.E. Coalition, a similar
community group begun in
Franklin and joined by Medway,
that has been tackling the
issue in those communities with
public education and increased
resources. “Right now, education
is where you start. There’s
no age restriction on this. Last
week, we had a 19-year-old fatal
overdose and the week before,
we had a 29-year-old overdose
twice. Everyone’s using (opioids).”
Barrett points out that prescription
opioids are part of the
problem, noting that D.A. Morrissey
is tackling overprescribing.
He paraphrases Jen Rowe,
of D.A. Morrissey’s office, in
saying that “our pharmacies
are our back alley drug dealers.
Just because a doctor writes
a prescription for 20 Vicoden
doesn’t mean you have to give it
to them.”
“From the Lions perspective,
we want to make sure people
in our town are being looked
after, whatever we can do,” says
Hayes.
Right now, the group has
begun a Facebook page for
M.C.A.S.E., and it has scheduled
some seminars for parents
by P.R.E.P., Prevention
Resources and Education for
Parents. P.R.E.P. will address
Middle School and High School
parents on May 11, and later, on
June 6, will address elementary
school parents at the Millis Public
Library.
“Get a Clue.”
“You have to create a mystery
story,” says Lilly Cassidy, 11. “It
required a lot of teamwork, and
you get to perform in front of
people, which is a good thing and
really fun.” Lilly explains that
her team made a skit in which a
group of well-known detectives,
such as Sherlock Holmes and the
Pink Panther, must solve a mystery
of who stole a watch from
a vendor. Students had to incorporate
a technical clue from the
period. Dangerous Ducks incorporated
a twist into their solution,
leading to three possible endings.
“To catch the person, we
made a trap,” says Lilly, explaining
that the boys on the team
researched types of traps and
constructed it.
“All of the ideas and everything
they build, all the writing
has to be from the kids,” says
Miles Cassidy, Lilly’s Dad.
With this challenge, the team
took third place at the regional
competition in Holliston and
then second place at the state
competition at Worcester Polytech,
which led them to the
Global Finals, since the top three
teams in each challenge go to
Knoxville.
Coach Kendall Jones believes
the camaraderie of the team and
their twist on the plot gave them
an edge with the appraisers.
“They really have a talent
for acting, and they work so well
together,” says Jones, who says
that Destination Imagination has
molded her as a person. “Their
creativity is shown through the
play. I think you can really tell
this is what they love to do and
they’re enjoying themselves. The
actual skit they came up with
wasn’t like anyone else’s. There’s
a part where you have to open up
the envelope, that was the person
that sold the watch, and instead
of just opening it up and saying
oh it’s this person, they used that
as a clue to find the person, so the
skit goes on after that, which sets
it aside (from the others).”
Miles Cassidy says he feels
that all DI participants grow
from the experience.
“(My older daughter) learned
teamwork. Lilly learned to be
confident, I think everyone gets
something out of DI,” he says.
“It’s such a good experience,
Destination Imagination Global
Finals,” says Kendall Jones, who
loved DI so much she decided
to coach the young kids on this
team when she learned they
needed someone. “They meet so
many people around the world,
all different cultures. They’ll remember
it for the rest of their
lives.”
Can your loyalty be bought?
Interesting, isn’t it, that some banks have to offer folks $20/month just to bank
with them? Others advertise that they will pay you hundreds of dollars to move
your checking account. Are they that desperate?
Have you read the small print?
Should these offers seem intriguing, often they are less so after reading what is required
to get the payoff. Sometimes you have to open more than one account, maintain exorbitant
balances, sign up for a myriad of automated payments, live only in certain towns, or conduct a
required number of qualifying transactions each month. It’s confusing and unnecessary.
Welcome to Needham Bank.
No phony offers, no small type hiding the real deal, no gimmicks. Just full and complete
disclosure of a different kind of bank. A bank that eschews misdirection. A bank that offers one
personal checking account, NB Checking. No requirements or lengthy dissertations on how to
avoid a monthly fee, because there isn’t one. Yet, this account pays interest and automatically
reimburses every ATM fee you may incur anywhere in the world. Seriously.
Who does that?
We do it every single day for individuals and businesses. Check us out at NeedhamBank.com.
“I schedule two to three
Mohawk Pride Puts the Fun in Fundraising
By Pam Mustard
February and March are usually
slow months of the year,
but that was hardly the case in
Millis where Mohawk Madness
gripped the town with a unforgettable
comedy night and an
equally memorable three on
First on February 27 th local
legend Tony V. had the crowd
in stitches with his hilarious perspective
on the absurdities of
life while his comedic colleagues
Brad Mastrangelo and Dan
Krohn also generated their fair
share chuckles from the highly
amused and entertained audience.
The laugh-filled tripleheader
at the Medfield VFW
was complemented by a silent
auction featuring Red Sox and
Celtics tickets along with winetastings,
dinners and hotel getaway
packages. The over 150
attending also enjoyed a catered
buffet and many wonderful raffle
prizes.
Weeks later, on March 26,
the scene shifted to the Millis
high School gymnasium as eager
hoopsters hit the hardwood for
Medway Seniors Grateful for
Neighbor Brigade Outreach
By J.D. O’Gara
The Medway Neighbor Brigade
was at it again this spring –
lovingly preparing holiday meals
for Easter and delivering them to
grateful seniors.
“We’ve received an overwhelming
response of thanks
from our seniors,” says Kate Fennyery,
social worker who works
at the Medway Senior Center.
“(The Medway Neighbor Brigade)
put so much care and love
into making these meals, and
sometimes they bring them flowers;
sometimes they bring them
Easter candy; sometimes the
whole family shows up to bring
them the meal, with the kids.
These guys are home alone, and
they love seeing the kids,” says
Fennyery.
Richard and Bob Wasnewski,
two brothers, lifelong residents
of Medway, who live in a house
their parents had built on Populatic
Street in the 1960s, were
among the recipients of the holiday
gesture.
“They brought meals on
Thanksgiving, Christmas and
Easter,” says Robert Wasnewski,
who recently celebrated his 80th
birthday in March. “I thought
it was very nice.” Wasnewski
explains that for Thanksgiving,
a couple and their daughter
brought a meal, and similarly at
Christmas, a different couple and
their teenage daughter dropped
something by. This past Easter,
he says,” a nice lady who’s
very active in the Medway Senior
Center and at St. Joseph’s
brought the meal.”
“I think it’s a very nice gesture
that they do this,” says Wasnewski.
“Like for people that are
shut in, like my two aunts, Helen
and Ann, they’re 93 and 98 – and
they were very happy,” he says.
“I couldn’t believe it,” says
Cathy Keough, 51-year resident
of Populatic Street who is legally
blind, who received a Thanksgiving,
Christmas and Easter basket
(along with flowers). “Isn’t that a
wonderful thing to do? I think it’s
the most miraculous thing I ever
saw in my life, that they would get
up on their holiday and just go to
someone’s house and make sure
they have dinner. They brought
me everything you could possibly
think of.”
“It’s amazing,” says Fennyery.
“(Basket recipients) are saying
they just love being from Medway,
because of this group of
people, because of the Medway
Neighbor Brigade.”
educate consumers about credit
unions, while also encouraging
them to discover firsthand how
credit union values can make for
better banking experience.
The campaign is an initiative
of the Cooperative Credit Union
Association (CCUA), a trade organization
serving the interests of
credit unions in Massachusetts,
New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Norfolk Community Federal
Credit Union and CCUA
believe that credit unions, which
are nonprofit, member-owned financial
cooperatives, are the best
banking choice for consumers
because of the values and principles
they espouse, which impacts
the quality of their services (rated
The centerpiece of the campaign
is its website (BetterVaules-
assortment of information on
credit unions, their history, reasons
to join, and answers to frequently
asked questions. Most
important, the website touts a
the act of kindness to a friend,
Better Values. Better Banking.
also engages the public
through social media, especially
its Facebook page where credit
union members and the public
can share stories and comments
about their own credit union
Dear Medway Resident,
On May 9, 2016, Medway residents at the Annual Town Meeting will be asked to vote on the proposed Payment In Lieu Of Taxes (PILOT) Agreement negotiated between
the Town and Exelon. This agreement will set in place a twenty (20) year tax plan with Exelon for the proposed power facility to be constructed at their existing
site off of Summer Street in West Medway. The proposed PILOT will provide a clear and stable revenue stream to the Town totaling over $75 million dollars over the
twenty year period, and will allow the Town to best plan for current and future needs, and will remove financial uncertainty that would otherwise occur on an annual
basis without a PILOT in place.
This proposed PILOT Agreement will be addressed as Article One on the Town Meeting Warrant. It is important to note though that this vote is NOT a referendum on
the proposed project. A YES vote does not indicate support for the project, nor does a NO vote impact the decision to approve the facility in Medway. That decision is
strictly in the hands of the State Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB), and our Town Meeting process will not influence that outcome in any way. This vote is simply a
technical/legal vote on the method and manner on how this facility, if approved by the State, will be taxed here at the local level.
Below we invite you to review a series of frequently asked questions regarding this proposed PILOT as you prepare for the Town Meeting vote. In addition, we encourage
all residents to visit our Town website, (http://www.townofmedway.org/Pages/MedwayMA_Bcomm/BOS/exelonbulletin), to learn more about the PILOT and the project as
proposed. Many informative documents can be found there, including the full text of the PILOT including tax payment tables, and our Host Community Agreement that
was also negotiated to provide additional protections for the Community. Finally, please always feel free to contact our Town Administrator’s Office with any questions
you may have.
Thank you and we look forward to seeing everyone on May 9 th !
How does a PILOT work?
FAQs About the Town of Medway PILOT Agreement with Exelon
The primary value in an electric generating facility is the equipment located on and in the property, and not necessarily the “land value” of the property. As there
can be wide variations on the appraised value of the equipment between what the property owner and the Town may determine, the mechanism of the PILOT
agreement was established by law in Massachusetts to eliminate uncertainty and give each party proper expectations on payments and revenue. Please see the
State law in this link, specifically section (b). (https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleIX/Chapter59/Section38H) In addition, the Massachusetts Department of
Revenue has issued guidelines on how the PILOT and overall electric generating facility taxing process works. A link to those guidelines is here. (http://www.mass.
gov/dor/docs/dls/publ/igr/1998/98-403.pdf)
Is a PILOT a So-Called “Tax Break”?
Absolutely not. A PILOT agreement, per Massachusetts law, “shall be the result of good faith negotiations and shall be the equivalent of the property tax obligation
based on full and fair cash valuation.” In the case of the negotiated Exelon PILOT, the full value of the property, including equipment values, was determined
in advance and is part of the overall PILOT formula.
What is the proposed PILOT Agreement between Exelon and the Town of Medway?
Exelon, through this PILOT, will pay in excess of $75 million dollars to the Town of Medway over 20 years in combined real estate and personal property tax and
Community Preservation assessments. Details can be reviewed here: http://www.townofmedway.org/Pages/MedwayMA_Bcomm/BOS/PILOT_10-13-15.pdf
Why is the proposed PILOT Agreement good for the Town of Medway?
The PILOT Agreement will provide steady and predictable revenue for the Town of Medway for budgeting purposes for the next 20 years. The $75 million dollars
will go to our general fund and could be used to fund operational and infrastructure needs, such as education, public safety, and roads & sidewalks, without
placing an added tax burden for some of these improvements upon Medway residents.
It is important to note that additional revenues due from Exelon through the Host Community Agreement and estimated permitting fees will exceed an additional
$4 million dollars over and above this PILOT thus bringing Medway’s projected 20 year revenues in at nearly $80 million dollars.
What financially happens if the Town votes against the PILOT Agreement at the 2016 Annual Town Meeting?
If the Town votes against the PILOT Agreement at the 2016 Annual Town Meeting then the Town of Medway will be required to make real estate and personal
property tax assessments on the Exelon Power Plant each year. This will require the annual cost of hiring a special utility tax professional to appraise the Power
Plant. In the likely event that Exelon disagrees with the Town’s assessments, they will have the legal right to challenge those through an abatement process, up
to and possibly including a formal court proceeding before the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board (ATB). (http://www.mass.gov/anf/hearings-and-appeals/oversight-agencies/atb/)
Those proceedings, each year, will result in higher technical and legal costs, and possibly lower tax revenues if so decided by the ATB. This PILOT agreement
eliminates that possibility and guarantees a consistent and likely higher revenue stream for Medway.

May 2016 Local Town Pages www.millismedwaynews.com Page 17
What could the revenue difference be?
To illustrate this, let us use the value originally proposed by Exelon’s consultant at $160 million dollars in year one. The value negotiated and agreed to in the
PILOT is $210 million dollars, a figure very close to the Town’s consultant’s appraisal. If the lower figure were to be accepted by the ATB, AND all other formula
assumptions in the PILOT remained in place (not likely), this specific revenue loss to Medway (versus the PILOT revenue) could reach $18 million dollars over the
same 20 year period.
Would a “No” vote on the PILOT Agreement warrant article have any impact on whether or not the Exelon Expansion Proposal is approved or not approved
by the Energy Facilities Siting Board?
No. The Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB) has sole authority to approve or deny the proposed Exelon Expansion Proposal. Town Meeting does not have any
authority over approval of the Proposal nor can it legally impact that decision. In fact, the EFSB has concluded its hearing phase of the permitting process and
would clearly be prohibited from even considering any action on the warrant in its decision making. This warrant article is not a legal referendum on the construction
of the facility. It is strictly a taxing mechanism. Voting down this PILOT agreement does not stop or affect the licensing or construction of this power
plant project, but instead will only penalize the Town if the facility is approved.
CATARACT
continued from page 18
feld, MD, the past president of
ASCRS, says the clinical benefits
of bladeless femtosecond laser
cataract surgery are fourfold: 1.
The primary incision allows the
surgeon to create a uniform and
consistent three-plane incision
with a self-sealing reverse side
cut, which has the potential to
reduce the incidence of endophthalmitis.
(Eye infections after
cataract surgery) 2. Incisions
are more accurate, safer and
reproducible. 3. Capsulotomies
(Openings in the bag hosting the
cataract) are more precise. 4. The
procedure is safer.
There are no eyes like yours,
and there is no cataract procedure
like customized bladeless
laser cataract surgery for your
eyes. Bladeless laser cataract surgery
is a major advancement in
cataract treatment, is FDA approved
and embraced by top
ophthalmologists in the U.S. and
around the world. Armed with
this knowledge, you can now separate
what are myths from clear
solid facts.
In addition to producing precise
cuts needed for surgery, the
laser used in bladeless cataract
surgery breaks up and softens the
cloudy cataract so there is less
ultrasound needed to remove
the cataract. Less ultrasound
translates into less energy used
inside the eye and clearer corneas,
which in turn helps producing
better vision on the first day
after the surgery. This becomes
even more critical if you have a
weak cornea or a small eye with
a dense cataract.
Bladeless laser cataract surgery
is not only used to perform
delicate incisions with high precision.
More critical are the abilities
of this technology to correct corneal
astigmatism with the laser,
perform the opening needed in
the cloudy lens with reliability
and precision and activating the
same laser to soften the lens and
facilitate its removal. This circular
opening is one of the most
challenging steps for a surgeon to
perform with his hands and the
laser makes this part precise and
reproducible. The laser advanced
bladeless precision and ability to
correct astigmatism translates
into outcomes that increase the
likelihood of seeing well without
glasses following cataract surgery.
In fact, the femtosecond laser
creates incisions in areas that will
relax the cornea to reduce astigmatism
and often decrease the
dependence on glasses. When
it comes to cataract surgery in
2016, there are different choices
and strategies to achieve the best
outcome. Bladeless cataract surgery
is all about aiming towards
better precision, more safety and
excellent outcomes. Is this the
best choice for you? This can
only be determined during a direct
discussion between you and
your surgeon.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
we use one of the 2 femtosecond
lasers currently used by Mass
Eye and Ear Infirmary. The
same laser used by the best of
the best. We also offer the laser
procedure for free to all patients
opting for a premium multifocal
lens if they have astigmatism.
No additional costs and no click
fees. Now those are facts. Furthermore,
we perform the procedure
in a state-of-the-art center
where 70 other Boston surgeons
operate and over 2000 laser cataract
procedures have already
been performed. Dr. Kaldawy is
very proud to have been among
the first to bring to you the same
excellent eye care provided by
the best eye institutions around
the world…and much closer to
home.
The top 5 eye hospitals in the
country offer bladeless femtosecond
laser cataract surgery....so
do we. When reading about this
technology, please remember:
Every single one of
us is here to keep
you healthy.
Welcoming patients in Franklin,
Millis, and Framingham.
There are myths and then there
Redemption Will Be a Factor For Medway Nine
By Ken Hamwey
The 2016 edition of the
Medway High baseball team is
looking to qualify for the playoffs,
advance as deep as possible
and to contend for the Tri Valley
League title. The Mustangs are
also looking for redemption.
Last year, when coach Mike
Coppinger began his rookie season,
Medway was rolling along,
compiling a 9-6 record and needing
only one win in its last five
games to qualify for the tourney.
Then, the unthinkable occurred
— the Mustangs dropped their
final five contests.
“It was disappointing,’’ Coppinger
said. “We faced some topnotch
pitchers, lost a couple of
close games and played poorly
against teams we should have defeated.
I really felt badly for our
four seniors. This time around,
we’re focused on making the
playoffs, making some noise in
the post-season, and we’re also
hoping to contend for the league
crown.’’
The Mustangs, who had a 1-1
record at Local Town Pages deadline,
should be a top-echelon
team this time around because
they have more assets than liabilities.
“We’ve got experience with
eight seniors returning and a
total of 11 players back with
varsity credentials,’’ Coppinger
said. “Our depth is good, our
hitting and pitching are strengths
and we’ve got speed and a high
baseball IQ. Where we need to
improve is on defense. We can be
better in the field.’’
Medway’s infield will include
senior Devin Nealon and Brian
Culcasi at first base, senior Jake
Brodeur at second, sophomore
T.J. Nelson at shortstop and senior
Jeff Costello at third. “Devin
is consistent at the plate, has a
good approach and can field,’’
Coach Mike Coppinger (back row at left) with the seniors whom he started with as freshmen.
They are, front row from left, Jake Brodeur, Jeff Wenzel, Jeff Costello, Brian Culcasi and Seth Coppinger.
Back row from left, Coppinger, Devin Nealon, Pat Harrigan, Tyler Monahan, Joe Downing and Matt Dwyer.
Coppinger said. “Brian has great
hands in the field and at bat. Jake
is a competitor, a take-charge
guy who has a strong arm, good
range and can hit for power. T.J.
has great hands and good footwork.
He’s a scrappy hitter who
makes good contact. Jeff is the
ultimate leader. He’s versatile,
has a strong arm and he’s got
gap-to-gap power.’’
Coppinger has two top-notch
catchers in senior Tyler Monahan
and junior Matt Brown. Monahan,
who last year hit .295 and
had five home runs, can also play
first, third or assume the role of
designated-hitter.
“Tyler led the league in home
runs for half a season last year,’’
Coppinger recalled. “He’s excellent
on defense, blocks the plate
well and he calls a good game.
Matt also is solid on defense and
he’s got a cannon for an arm. He
settles down pitchers well and
he’s worked hard to improve his
hitting.’’
Medway’s outfield will be in
capable hands. Junior Sean Petinge
is in right, senior Jeff Wenzel
patrols center and senior Joe
Downing, who hit .371 and stole
14 bases last year, handles the
chores in left. Sophomore Nick
Assad, who also is a pitcher, can
fill in at any of the outfield slots.
“Sean hit .303 last year after
returning from Tommy John surgery,’’
Coppinger noted. “He’s
versatile (outfield or infield) and
he’s a terrific athlete. Jeff is fast,
has range and is a good contact
hitter. His speed enables him to
steal a lot of bases. Joe is one of
our best hitters. He’s got power
to the gaps, moves well and is
engaged on every pitch. Nick is
very athletic and gives us quality
depth.’’
Coppinger likes his three starting
pitchers — senior lefty Pat
Harrigan, senior right-hander
Seth Coppinger (brother), and
Assad, a hard-throwing righthander.
“Pat mixes his assortment
nicely,’’ Coppinger emphasized.
“He’s got a good fastball, curve,
slider and change-up. A threeyear
varsity player, his control is
excellent. Seth relies on a fastball,
curve and change-up. His control
is very good and he hits his spots.
Nick has good off-speed stuff and
a dependable curve. He’s working
hard to improve his control.’’
Last year, Harrigan compiled
a 3-1 record and had an E.R.A.
of 2.52 while Seth Coppinger
was 4-3 with an E.R.A. of 2.88.
Junior Jake Melo is Medway’s
closer, Petinge will start and also
see action in middle-inning relief
and Nealon is able to fill either
role. “Jake has a good fastball
and slider and throws hard,’’ said
Coppinger, a former Medway
diamond star who played at Merrimack.
“He’s improved his command.
Petinge’s best pitch is his
fastball and his control is good.
Nealon provides depth and he’s
got a fastball that moves well.’’
Coppinger paid his dues before
taking the varsity reins. A
pitcher-infielder at Merrimack,
he later coached there before becoming
the junior-varsity coach
at Wellesley High. Serving one
year as Medway’s freshman
coach, he later became a varsity
assistant before taking the varsity
post. His assistants are Paul Francesconi,
Andrew Miller (jayvees)
and James Nix (freshmen).
“Medfield will be very good,’’
Coppinger said. “They’ve got
quality pitching. Ashland also has
mound depth and no one should
count out T.J. Chiappone’s Bellingham
squad. As for Medway,
I firmly believe we’ll earn that
playoff berth. I can see it in our
kids’ eyes.’’
Redemption may not be visible,
but it’ll likely play a role.

Millis Track – Small Team, Big Fun
By Christopher Tremblay
For the past four years Pat
Diskin has been a volunteer track
coach for the Millis High School
track and field team. When the
previous head coach stepped
down after last season, Athletic
Director Chuck Grant knew he
didn’t have to look far for his next
coach – she was already there.
Growing up, Diskin was never
a high school track star as the
sport was around, but once she
got into college, she was introduced
to the sport and was soon
hooked.
“One of the teachers that I
was assisting had kids in track
and before long I was hooked,”
she said. “I started taking clinics
and have been involved with the
Special Olympics for the past 47
years.”
Having graduated a good
number of seniors from last
year’s squad, the new head coach
is taking over a squad that has
only 12 returning athletes with
any type of track and field experience.
Only fielding a dozen
athletes with experience is tough
enough, but participating in the
Tri Valley League makes it that
much more interesting.
“Being a small team in the
TVL it is very difficult to win
dual meets,” Diskin said. “Here
at Millis, we’re not about winning,
it’s all about personal progress.
That’s all that you can do
when you only have 12 athletes
with any type of experience.”
Although the Mohawks have
only a handful of returners, they
all have a love and dedication to
the sport. Leading the way will
be junior captains Adam Fairfield
and James Schultze. Fairfield
will run the hurdles as well
as participate in the triple jump,
while Schultze will throw the javelin
and is working on participating
in the 400 m hurdles.
In addition to the captains
Millis will rely on John Frasca
(hurdles and high jump) and
Ethan Lazare (javelin and discus).
Being a javelin and discus
thrower herself, Diskin will also
be coaching the girl throwers on
the team. Senior Greta Hoglund
will throw the shot put and discus,
while junior Sarah Wenzel,
who won the TVL discus championship
last spring, will throw
Coach Pat Diskin knows that
her small sized track team at
Millis won’t make much of a dent
in the Tri-Valley League, but
focuses on building personal
accomplishment and having fun.
3 events and junior Theresa
Cerullo also placed at the TVL
Championship meet in both the
javelin and discus. Both juniors
also participated in the State
Tournament.
“Coach Diskin has helped us
considerably; she takes good care
of us and treats us all like her
grandchildren,” Hoglund said.
“It doesn’t matter how we do I
love the sport, it’s the only one
I’m good at.”
Diskin is thrilled that there are
a total of 16 athletes looking to
throw the javelin this season.
“I think they like the event because
it’s an individual sport and
there is personal motivation,”
said Diskin. “The kids also think
it’s pretty cool that I go out there
and throw with them at practice.”
The first year coach is not
going into the season with the
high expectations of winning
anything on a high level, she is
just hoping for the kids to go out
and have fun while learning.
“You can’t expect all that
much when you really don’t have
Local Farms Home to Nature
Immersion Nursery Schools
All-Outdoor Programs in Millis and Natick Connect
Kids to Natural World
By J.D. O’Gara
Three- to six-year-old kids
running around outside, in the
rain, mud and even 20-degree
weather, playing with mud,
rocks, sticks and even dirt shovels
– some believe that’s the
way it should be. The German
concept of Waldkindergärten –
where children lead their own
learning in nature’s classroom,
has come to the Metrowest,
most recently through Christine
Heer’s and Lisa Henderson’s
Sprouts program, which began
on the ground of Tangerini’s
Spring Street Farm in Millis this
past September, and for the past
seven years, at the Natick Community
Organic Farm, as Forest
Gnomes, a forest preschool that
takes place on that property.
“We are outdoors almost the
entire day with the exception that
we have a fairly rustic structure
we can use if it really starts pouring,”
says teacher Audrey Fergason,
of Forest Gnomes, adding
a paraphrase of a common outdoor
Kindergarten quote, “We
don’t think there’s any such thing
as bad weather, we just think
there’s improper clothing.”
In Millis, children have a
greenhouse check-in at the start
of each day, where they monitor
their “fingers, toes and nose,”
says Henderson. “Our goal is to
get them to be able to tune into
how they are feeling outside, in
rain, shine, snow and cold.” The
Millis program has built a yurt
on the property for those moments
when kids “just aren’t having
fun,” but otherwise, kids are
outdoors.
“Natick is really geared to outside
all of the time; we are outside
most of the time,” says Heer,
who says that the Millis “farm
and forest” Kindergarten really
emphasizes the farm component
as well as outdoor forest play.
“The farm is so important,
connecting kids to their food. It’s
all about being connected to the
At farm and forest-themed nursery school Sprouts, located at
Tangerini’s Farm in Millis, children lead their own play outside using
sticks, logs, and even garden tools, testing their limits and learning
how to play safely.
earth, learning seasons outside in
the seasons, and understanding
all the cycles,” says Heer. Children
will feed animals, collect
eggs, tap trees and plant, dig and
pick vegetables, for example.
Fergason, of the Forest
Gnomes program, says she loves
“not hearing my voice all the
time” as a teacher. “It’s so freeing
to be in an environment like that
where you don’t have to spend
all of your time telling them no.
If you take a child, and you put
them in the woods, they are very
much in tune with their bodies.”
She explains that one student on
a rainy day recently pointed to a
small bud on a tree, exclaiming,
“It’s a sign of spring!” Children,
she says, are encouraged to set
their own boundaries and limits.
“We don’t have to say anything.
We work with them to
establish how to take safe risks,
climb high enough to get back
down, and we don’t force them
to do anything they don’t want to
do,” she says. Being able to spend
hours outside, she says, improves
children’s eyesight and stamina.
“By January, February, these kids
are running, jumping, climbing
trees. A lot of kids don’t get the
chance to do that, because in the
playground, movements are very
prescribed. A lot of this is letting
children be children, exploring
the world in a way that is just
so different from the way adults
explore the world. How often do
kids get to climb trees anymore?”
Children in both programs
are encouraged to climb and play
with sticks and rocks in a safe
way. Similarly, they are taught
to carefully use tools such as dirt
shovels, wheelbarrows and in the
Forest Gnomes program, even
pocket knives in order to carve
sticks.
Sometimes, traditional school
rules “in some ways, go against
natural inclinations of childhood,”
says Fergason. “We want
to run; we want to scream. It’s
good for you to do these things.”
Millis Town Election May 2nd
Contested Race for Board of Selectmen, Question on Road Repair Override
Polls will open at 7 a.m. and
close at 8 p.m. at Millis Town Hall
on May 2, for the Millis Annual
Election. This year, the election
will feature a ballot question on
whether the town of Millis should
assess a permanent $300,000
general override for the purpose
of road repair beginning FY July
1,2016.
“We have a $5 million backlog
of roads that need to be
addressed,” says Millis Town Administrator
Charles Aspinwall.
This was a choice between a
debt exclusion versus an operating
override. The debt exclusion
would do it faster, but the impact
on property tax would be higher.”
This operating override would
translate to about $100 per year
per property owner.
This year’s election also features
a contested race for Board of
Selectmen. Those running include
Christopher Smith, incumbent,
Catherine MacInnes, currently
on the planning board, and Peter
Jurmain, currently on the Finance
Committee. Following are their
candidate statements:
Peter Jurmain: Candidate
for Millis Selectman
Why I’m running for Selectman
in Millis, MA.My name is
Pete Jurmain and I’m running for
Selectman in Millis, Massachusetts.
There are several reasons
for my decision to run, but chief
among them is pride in my community.
I believe that as our community
grows, there are many
issues that will challenge the character
of the Town. It is a time for
an increase in the amount of open
discussion of all issues, for examining
options, for considering how to
manage our future and for... taking
responsibility for managing our
community.
What makes me qualified?As
a member of the Finance Committee
for the past decade, with
several years as Chair, I am concerned
that citizens in Millis understand
what is going on in the
Town. I have also had a dozen
years of management experience
in three Fortune 50 companies,
and have run my own small business
for nearly 30 years. I have significant
experience in evaluating
issues and then making decisions.
My operating style has always
been inclusive and I am always
open to input from others.
I am also a veteran who served
a tour of duty in Vietnam, and
have never forgotten what it means
to evaluate the problem, explain
the alternatives and lead by example.
So when I’m asked why
I’m running, it’s because I believe
we need to make some changes in
the way we respond to our community’s
needs, and rather than
complaining, I’m choosing to try
to make a difference. In this instance,
that means running for Selectman.
Would I prefer to remain
on the Finance Committee and
enjoy my retirement? Yes. But I
firmly believe that if I’m elected, I
will make a difference to the Town
of Millis.
I am asking for your support. I
hope you will consider me when
you vote on May 2nd. I look forward
to serving all of the community
as a Selectman for the Town
of Millis for the next three years.
Cathy MacInnes: Candidate
for Millis Selectman
My passion for public service
began in in 1979, when I was appointed
to the Wrentham Zoning
Board of Appeals. In 1984,
I married lifelong Millis resident
Mass. State Inspection Station
Steve MacInnes, and I needed no
convincing to move to Millis to
live and raise our family. Thereafter,
I was appointed secretary
of the Millis ZBA. I served on the
Charter Review Commission that
changed the form of Millis government
to include a Town Administrator.
My Planning Board membership
began in 1993, when
I prevailed in a contested race.
Twenty-three years later, I continue
to represent the interests
of all residents regarding safety,
especially pedestrian and vehicular,
in all applications before the
Board. During my tenure, the
Planning Board has approved the
applications of Milliston Common
(excluding only the Roche
Bros. building); Centennial Park,
CVS; Rocky’s Ace Hardware;
Mobil gas station; Dunkin Donuts;
Needham Savings Bank; cleanup
of Millis Used Auto; and several
large and small residential subdivisions,
including the Glen Ellen
Country Club senior residential
development, to name but a few.
The Planning Board has also successfully
passed several zoning
by-laws, keeping the town current
with trends described in its Master
Plan, for example: Senior Residential
Community Development,
Open Space Preservation, Village
Business Developments, Large
Scale Ground-Mounted Solar
Photovoltaic Installations, car
washes, adult entertainment uses,
personal wireless communications
facilities, Millis Center Economic
Opportunity Overlay District, Village
Center, Medical Marijuana
Treatment Center, Wineries, and
Substance Abuse Treatment Centers.
I also served on the police station
site committee and was instrumental
in the committee’s choice
to construct the police station at its
current location, thereby enhancing
the downtown development.
My work for the town also includes
membership on the Community
Preservation Committee
and Sidewalk Committee. I am
a member of the Millis Garden
Club and co-chaired our recent
Millis Beautification Day. However,
my great happiness was for
several years a Merit Badge Counsellor
for Millis Boy Scout Troop
15. I tremendously enjoyed teaching
our young men about their
role in family; government, both
local and global; keeping a budget;
communication skills; and especially
volunteerism. Several went
on to become Eagle Scouts. They,
in turn, taught me much!
My experience has prepared
me to be your next Selectman. I
have worked successfully with the
town boards and commissions to
bring cohesiveness and teamwork
to all our joint projects. I am
proud of where Millis is headed. I
could go on and on and bore you
more, but I will let my activities in
our great town speak for itself.
Christopher Smith: Candidate
for Millis Selectman
My name is Chris Smith and I
am running for re-election to the
Millis Board of Selectmen. First,
I would like to thank the citizens
of Millis for granting me the opportunity
of serving as one of
your Selectmen for the last three
years. I certainly have learned a
lot and have a great sense of personal
satisfaction through helping
my community and individuals. I
hope during my tenure that I have
earned your trust and support for
another three years.
We as a community have had
a number of challenges over the
last 18 months, but we dealt with
them together and through those
challenges have become a stronger
community. I, like most everyone,
would like to forget February 2015
where upwards of 9 feet of snow
fell upon us. It was truly inspiring
to see neighbors helping neighbors
in what hopefully will be the
worst month of weather we ever
live through. We all remember the
first day of school, the unfortunate
and frightening events of the day,
and the unthinkable happenings
afterwards. This tested our ability
to collaborate and communicate
together. The employees of this
town, the School Department, the
DPW, the Fire Department, the
administration, and of course the
Millis Police Department came
together to get a difficult, stressful
and critical job done. Through it
all, the citizens of Millis were in it
with them, cooperating, assisting
where possible, and most significantly
showed your support and
appreciation for the efforts and the
job well done. More recently we
had to deal with the purchase and
sale agreement for the Glen Ellen
Country Club property, this tested
our ability to ensure the Town’s
interests would be protected and
we were able to hold public meetings
in a short time frame to inform
and to hear the concerns of
the community. It exemplified the
importance of providing information
to the public and having public
discussions pertaining to long
term strategic plans impacting the
entire town.
When I first began as a Selectman
in May, 2013, I established
local office hours and maintained
an open door policy. I have always
welcomed comments, questions,
criticisms and support. I am a fiscal
conservative who understands
that your hard earned tax dollars
when spent by the Town should be
well utilized. I believe in public forums
for sharing information, and
although we may not always agree
on every issue and every dollar
spent, it is important for the board
and committee members to listen
to and consider your input, by giving
the townspeople the forum and
by you exercising the opportunity
to provide your views enables
us to make better decisions. My
experience over these three years
working with you has fortified my
beliefs that we all need to work
together, because as we have seen
we are all collectively the town of
Millis, and we are certainly all in
this together.
Looking ahead and why I chose
to run for another term, we have
recently begun to address new
challenges and will have some very
difficult decisions to make that will
impact us all. Repairing or replacing
the Clyde Brown School,
which may be the most expensive
and perhaps important project to
date for our little Town. Additional
items of priority and importance
are: whether to sell water to
Exelon; how to fund maintenance
and repair on our roads in the
future; and additional decisions
regarding the Glen Ellen project
and the impact on the Town for
perhaps generations.
These are just some of the
challenges that lie in front of us,
there will be others. I believe that I
am the best candidate to not only
represent you, but work with you
in determining our various paths.
Over the next couple of weeks,
I will be communicating out my
positions on these and many other
matters through my Facebook
page (Chris Smith: Millis Selectman).
I realize and I appreciate
that people feel very strongly
about many of these issues, and I
can make no promises that we are
all going to see eye to eye on every
issue; but what I do promise is to
continue to encourage respectful
communication, discussion, and
debate and we, together as a community,
will determine the future
of Millis.
I respectfully ask for your vote
on May 2nd. Thank you very
much.

Buying a Home: The Final Walkthrough
by Joleen Rose
When buying a home, the last thing you do before you sign on the dotted line is go to the house and do a final walkthrough. This is different than the home inspection and
done just prior to the final closing of the sale.
The purpose of this walkthrough is to make sure the house will be delivered as agreed in your contract. You want to make sure the seller is leaving the house in working
order and no problems with the house have occurred since the last time you where there.
Here’s a quick checklist that will help you make the most of your final walkthrough:
• Bring your purchase contract with you and verify that all items agreed to in the contract have been taken care of
• Make sure the home and the exterior are free of personal belongings
• The home and exterior should also be free of trash
• Test all the appliances
• Confirm all the light fixtures are working
• Turn on ceiling fans as well as exhaust fans in the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry area.
• Check to make sure that the garage door remotes are in working order
• Go through the house and turn on every faucet and flush all the toilets
• Run the garbage disposal and trash compactor
• Open and close all the windows and doors to make sure they are opening and latching properly
• Look for any damage on the ceilings, floors, and walls such as new scratches, cracks, or other issues
• Finally, account for all keys to the property
This is an important step to take and could save you lot of headaches. This allows you to be able to resolve any problems before you close on the house.

Own a Piece of Paradise
Ever dream of owning a
home in Florida? What if you
could own a home near Disney
and see return on your real estate
by using as a rental, with no
extra work on your part?
“We are only a couple of
miles from Disney World,” says
Matt Montalvo, who moved to
the Florida area from Central
Massachusetts 10 years ago.
“When we sell a home, we can
put owners into our vacation
rental program. Buyers have
an option where they can use it
strictly as a second home or rent
it out as a vacation home. We
oversee, maintain, manage and
market the property.”
Homes range in size from
2,000 to 20,000 square feet,
condominiums and town homes
perfect for retirees and vacation
homes for families to sprawling
estate homes for corporate executives.
All have private swimming
pools and are located in
golf resorts that feature golf,
water parks and even restaurants
among their amenities.
“All of them are professionally
managed and maintained,
beautiful luxury estate homes,”
says Montalvo.
with other realtors and also beiing
to what I was looking for, not
FOR OUR CLIENTS
We would never use another agent other than Laina for any future real estate endeavors.
Not only did she help us purchase our current home but we also used her services to sell
our previous home. She is very professional and her experience and knowledge of
the home buying/selling process makes a stressful undertaking quite seemless. She is
always available to her clients day or night and 7 days a week. We highly recommend
Laina as she will put her clients best interest first and you can be assured every last
