The course was developed to provide the skills and confidence needed to explore the coast and inland waters by boat. Basic knowledge and skills are needed to have safe and enjoyable boating experiences, and this course is perfect for families that have just purchased a boat or are planning to in the future; and also for the boater keeping up with changes for your Massachusetts Firearms License – if you choose – at no extra cost. The $50 tuition includes eye and hearing protection, all materials, lunch and the Massachusetts Basic Firearms Safety certificate – a value of over $150! You must complete to boating regulations and laws. Successful completion of the course will also certify a minor, from 12 to 16 years of age, to operate a powerboat, including a Personal Water Craft / Jet Ski for 16 & 17 year-old operators, on Massachusetts waters. Certification is in conjunction with the Mass. Environmental Police. Rhode Island residents born after 1985 can also take the “Challenge Exam” for certification to operate motor vessels over 10 HP along with anyone, any age, from any state, wanting to operate a PWC on RI waters. ABS also meets the requirements to operate a vessel in many other states the eight-hour course to receive your certificate. This event is limited to 50 people, and you must be at least 16 years old to participate. O’Gara Three- to six-year-old kids running around outside, in the rain, mud and even 20-degree weather, playing with mud, rocks, sticks and even dirt shovels – some believe that’s the way it should be. The German concept of Waldkindergärten – where children lead their own learning in nature’s classroom, has come to the Metrowest, most recently through Christine Heer’s and Lisa Henderson’s Sprouts program, which began on the ground of Tangerini’s Spring Street Farm in Millis this past September, and for the past seven years, at the Natick Community Organic Farm, as Forest Gnomes, a forest preschool that takes place on that property. “We are outdoors almost the entire day with the exception that we have a fairly rustic structure we can use if it really starts pouring,” says teacher Audrey Fergason, of Forest Gnomes, adding a paraphrase of a common outdoor Kindergarten quote, “We don’t think there’s any such thing as bad weather, we just think there’s improper clothing.” In Millis, children have a greenhouse check-in at the start of each day, where they monitor their “fingers, toes and nose,” says Henderson. “Our goal is to get them to be able to tune into how they are feeling outside, in rain, shine, snow and cold.” The Millis program has built a yurt on the property for those moments when kids “just aren’t having fun,” but otherwise, kids are outdoors. “Natick is really geared to outside all of the time; we are outside most of the time,” says Heer, who says that the Millis “farm and forest” Kindergarten really emphasizes the farm component as well as outdoor forest play. “The farm is so important, connecting kids to their food. Children will feed animals, collect eggs, tap trees and plant, dig and pick vegetables, for example. Fergason, of the Forest Gnomes program, says she loves “not hearing my voice all the time” as a teacher. “It’s so freeing to be in an environment like that where you don’t have to spend all of your time telling them no. If you take a child, and you put them in the woods, they are very much in tune with their bodies.” She explains that one student on a rainy day recently pointed to a small bud on a tree, exclaiming, “It’s a sign of spring!” Children, she says, are encouraged to set their own boundaries and limits. “We don’t have to say anything. We work with them to establish how to take safe risks, climb high enough to get back down, and we don’t force them to do anything they don’t want to do,” she says. Being able to spend hours outside, she says, improves children’s eyesight and stamina. “By January, February, these kids are running, jumping, climbing trees. A lot of kids don’t get the chance to do that, because in the playground, movements are very prescribed. A lot of this is letting children be children, exploring the world in a way that is just so different from the way adults explore the world. How often do kids get to climb trees anymore?” Children in both programs are encouraged to climb and play with sticks and rocks in a safe way. Similarly, they are taught to carefully use tools such as dirt shovels, wheelbarrows and in the Forest Gnomes program, even pocket knives in order to carve sticks. Sometimes, traditional school rules “in some ways, go against natural inclinations of childhood,” says Fergason. “We want to run; we want to scream.
