This month, Metrowest antidrug community coalitions are joining together in presenting “Hidden in Plain Sight,” a recreation of a teen bedroom set up at the Natick Mall designed to help parents and other adults over 21 spot signs of substance abuse. Specially trained “tour guides” from MetroWest community coalitions will walk participants through the display, providing education about adolescent development and common signs of substance use. “The bedroom will be full of 20-30 different “warning signs” including drug paraphernalia and signs of other risky behavior,” says Gina Stucchi, of HDAAC, Holliston Drug and Alcohol Awareness Coalition. The display will be open to the public on weekdays from May 9-26, with a kickoff event on May 10, at 10 a.m. Hours are as follows: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: 5-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Select weekend dates of Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd, 12-4 p.m. “During their visit, parents will be hands-on with the display to find hidden items. There will also be a script to go along with the tour of the bedroom. O’Gara Millis is one of the latest communities to take steps in tackling a growing issue of substance abuse, and particularly opioids, in its community. A group of public safety, town government, school and local organizations have formed the Millis Community Awareness & Substance Education (M.C.A.S.E.) “We are just starting, and what we’re really trying to do is raise awareness,” says Debbie Hayes, Millis Lions President this year. Other members of the group include Millis Fire Chief Rick Barrett, Barbara Thissell, of Millis Board of Health, Karen D’Angelo, Millis’ Public Health nurse, Jen Garb Palumbo, the Millis Middle/High School Nurse, Diane Danehy, Clyde F. Brown Elementary Nurse, Derrick Finney, Millis Middle School Health Teacher, and Dale Bickford and Chris Soffayer, of Millis Police. The first event the group will hold will be an event to educate parents. “We need to do something to educate our parents,” says Millis Fire Chief Rick Barrett. Barrett says a friend, Jim Derrick, informed him about the local S.A.F.E. Coalition, a similar community group begun in Franklin and joined by Medway, that has been tackling the issue in those communities with public education and increased resources. “Right now, education is where you start. There’s no age restriction on this. Last week, we had a 19-year-old fatal overdose and the week before, we had a 29-year-old overdose twice. Everyone’s using (opioids).” Barrett points out that prescription opioids are part of the problem, noting that D.A. Morrissey is tackling overprescribing. He paraphrases Jen Rowe, of D.A. Morrissey’s office, in saying that “our pharmacies are our back alley drug dealers. Just because a doctor writes a prescription for 20 Vicoden doesn’t mean you have to give it to them.” “From the Lions perspective, we want to make sure people in our town are being looked after, whatever we can do,” says Hayes. Right now, the group has begun a Facebook page for M.C.A.S.E., and it has scheduled some seminars for parents by P.R.E.P., Prevention Resources and Education for Parents. P.R.E.P. will address Middle School and High School parents on May 11, and later, on June 6, will address elementary school parents at the Millis Public Library. On Wednesday, May 18, Danielle Donnellan of Fallon Community Health Plan will speak at the Medway Business Council annual dinner meeting to discuss the importance of work-life balance and tips for managing and reducing stress. The meeting will be held at Restaurant 45 in Medway from at 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. MBC events are open to all area business representatives and other interested community members. The event will begin with networking and Medway Library Book Sale Makeover May 6th! Friends of the Medway Library Book Sale has returned with a whole new look! The book room space has been moved and renovated….more shelves, brighter lighting, wider aisles and bolder signage. What has not changed, however, are the thousands of books and media available, all organized for easy browsing. Moreover, the Friends-Only Pre-Sale on Friday, May 6 has extended hours and will be open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. It is easy to become a member: use the online form or pick up a registration at the library. Memberships may be purchased or renewed at the sale. So join Friends and have first access to all the books and fewer crowds. Saturday, May 7 from 10-2 is the Public Sale. Books are available from 25 cents to 2 dollars. Friends accepts cash or checks. And the following Saturday, May 14 from 10-2, is the popular Bag Sale, in which buyers may fill up a large brown paper grocery bag for only $5. Friends will provide the bags. Friends has also received as a donation over 200 collectible books about railroads. These books will be highlighted in their own special section. If you know people who love trains, let them know about this rare opportunity. Buyers have stated that these sales are the most organized in the area, thanks to dedicated Friends volunteers. Adult nonfiction sections include biography, politics, history, sports, gardening, travel, pets, crafts, finance, health, diet, cooking, inspiration and religion, nature, light appetizers, followed by a short business meeting, dinner and guest speaker Ms. Donnellan. Dinner choices are chicken & broccoli, steak tips or baked haddock. Registration fee for the event is $30/members and $35/non-members.
