Page 4 Local Town Pages www.millismedwaynews.com May 2016 DUCKS continued from page 1 “Get a Clue.” “You have to create a mystery story,” says Lilly Cassidy, 11. “It required a lot of teamwork, and you get to perform in front of people, which is a good thing and really fun.” Lilly explains that her team made a skit in which a group of well-known detectives, such as Sherlock Holmes and the Pink Panther, must solve a mystery of who stole a watch from a vendor. Students had to incorporate a technical clue from the period. Dangerous Ducks incorporated a twist into their solution, leading to three possible endings. “To catch the person, we made a trap,” says Lilly, explaining that the boys on the team researched types of traps and constructed it. “All of the ideas and everything they build, all the writing has to be from the kids,” says Miles Cassidy, Lilly’s Dad. With this challenge, the team took third place at the regional competition in Holliston and then second place at the state competition at Worcester Polytech, which led them to the Global Finals, since the top three teams in each challenge go to Knoxville. Coach Kendall Jones believes the camaraderie of the team and their twist on the plot gave them an edge with the appraisers. “They really have a talent for acting, and they work so well together,” says Jones, who says that Destination Imagination has molded her as a person. “Their creativity is shown through the play. I think you can really tell this is what they love to do and they’re enjoying themselves. The actual skit they came up with wasn’t like anyone else’s. There’s a part where you have to open up the envelope, that was the person that sold the watch, and instead of just opening it up and saying oh it’s this person, they used that as a clue to find the person, so the skit goes on after that, which sets it aside (from the others).” Miles Cassidy says he feels that all DI participants grow from the experience. “(My older daughter) learned teamwork. Lilly learned to be confident, I think everyone gets something out of DI,” he says. “It’s such a good experience, Destination Imagination Global Finals,” says Kendall Jones, who loved DI so much she decided to coach the young kids on this team when she learned they needed someone. “They meet so many people around the world, all different cultures.
