Side Trips
I’m struggling to get caught up on my sleep
this week. It was prom Saturday night and I
don’t bounce back the way I did when I was
younger.
It’s not that I was concerned
about my two
high school students. I
knew the kids they were
with, I knew the adults
chaperoning the dance
and the after prom
festivities and I knew
the parents hosting the
early morning breakfast.
My lack of sleep
had nothing to do with
worrying about either
one of them.
MYRNA
WAGNER
It is tied to the fact I didn’t sleep much in the
weeks leading up to prom as decorating the
gymnasium and transforming it into an island
paradise was my responsibility.
In the months leading up to this gig I was
planning a 14-foot volcano, a 65-foot sunset,
two dozen palm trees and an underwater
dance floor.
I would go to bed at night and wake up 90
minutes later with some new task for my to-do
list. After that I couldn’t get my brain to shut off
and I would sleep intermittently for the next
five hours, then give up and get up for the day.
When the big night arrived things had come
together really nicely, but apparently the stress
was too much. On a night when I should have
slept like a rock, I suffered through a migraine.
And the next day I had to function enough to
orchestrate taking everything back down.
Despite all that, I had a great time. I got to
work with dedicated volunteers and took advantage
of the vision of several talented artists
and designers.
Will I do it again next year? Absolutely. Be-
Iowa cause Information my kids both said it was a great prom.
History:
The modern circus was actually
created in England by
Philip Astley (1742-1814), a
former cavalry Sergeant-Major
turned showman. The son of a
cabinet-maker and veneer-cutter,
Astley had served in the Seven
Years’ War, where he displayed
a remarkable talent as a horsebreaker
and trainer. Upon his
discharge, Astley chose to imitate
the trick-riders who performed,
with increasing success, all over
Europe. Jacob Bates, an English
equestrian based in the German
States, who performed as far
away as Russia (1764-65) and
America (1772-73), was the first of
these showmen to make a mark.
KATE HARLOW | STAFF WRITER
comes to
Circus Pages performing in Spencer on Sunday, May 1
Elephants, white tigers and white
lions aren’t animals that you
would expect to see in Spencer,
IA, but on Sunday, May 1, you’ll be
able to see those animals and much
more.
The circus is coming to town.
Circus Pages will be in Spencer at
the Clay County Regional Events Center
on Sunday, May 1, and will offer
up two performances; the first at 1
p.m. and the second at 4:30 p.m.
“We’ve had this circus come the last
couple of years,” said Andrea Wiesenmeyer,
the marketing and sponsorship
manager with the Clay County
Fair and the Regional Events Center.
“It’s a full circus with lions, elephants,
ponies, camels and much more. It
should be a fun day.”
Circus Pages gets its name from the
family that runs the circus. The show
has been produced by Jose Pages for
over 25 years. Three generations of
Pages perform in the show to make
the Circus Pages a true family affair.
Circus Pages got its start in Cuba
in the 1960s. They perform flying
trapeze as well as offer up an array of
animal trainers, daredevils, aerialists,
acrobats and clowns.
Their show includes special performances
from their friends in the
animal kingdom including elephants,
white tigers, camels, acrobatic dogs,
liberty ponies, horses and white lions.
The show has a run-time of about an
hour and a half.
If experiencing the show from the
seats isn’t quite enough then you can
take one of the opportunities Circus
Pages offers to let you a little closer to
the action.
They offer elephant and pony rides
as well.
“I’m actually really looking forward
to the pony rides. Even though we
are in a rural community setting we
don’t always have opportunities to do
things like that,” Wiesenmeyer said.
She added with a laugh: “I’m also really
excited about the clowns, too, but
I know that there are a lot of people
who are afraid of clowns.”
The Circus Pages will put on two
performances on Sunday afternoon.
The cost of the show is $16 for an
adult and with that two kids 14 years
and younger get in for free. Each additional
children’s tickets is only $2. Be
aware that Circus Pages only accepts
cash transactions.
Wiesenmeyer thinks that the Circus
Pages shows are opportunities for fun
for families.
“It’s a great event that brings families
out and gives them the availability
to come out for a cost-effective event
and have a good time,” Wiesenmeyer
said. F
Brooks National Golf Club hosts birding event May 2
Spring is here and that means it’s
time to train your eye to look for
birdies at Brooks National Golf
Club in Okoboji.
But it’s not the golf style of birdies
you should watch for on Monday,
May 2.
There will be a number of people
lining up to go around the course,
but they’ll be armed with binoculars
instead of golf clubs or balls.
Once again this year, The Dickinson
County Conservation Board is teaming
up with Brooks National Golf
Club to host Birding on the Green.
The first event will be on Monday,
May 2 at 7 a.m. There will be Birding
on the Green events hosted throughout
the summer months on the first
Monday of each month from May
through September. The other dates
include June 6, July 11, Aug. 1 and
Sept. 12. This event is open to all ages
and it’s free.
No matter if you are a long-time
bird watching enthusiast or an amateur,
all are welcome.
The event will be led by experienced
local area birders Ed Thelen and Lee
Schoenewe. They’ll be on hand to
help both beginning and experienced
birders to identify a number of different
bird species. They’ll teach them
how to identify birds both by sight
and by sound.
According to Kiley Roth, the community
relations coordinator with
the Dickinson County Conservation
Board, the birders spy 40-60 avian
species on average at each of the Birding
on the Green events.
Some of the interesting species
on the
Birdinggreen
spotted at these events have included
kingbirds, bluebirds, wood ducks and
migrating warblers.
“We are always looking for new species,”
said naturalist Charles Vigdal.
And they are hopeful that this May
event will offer up a wide variety of
birds for the group to check out. According
to Roth, the May and September
events often feature the widest variety
of birds as they migrate through
the Iowa Great Lakes area.
“I would like to see what woodpeckers
might be there, maybe some
flickers,” said naturalist intern Jessica
Tramp. She added that she would also
love to see a scarlet tanager. “They are
supposed to be here now. I would love
to see one.”
And Brooks National Golf Club
might be the perfect place to see some
of these interesting birds.
“This program is a partnership with
our neighbors Brooks Golf Course.
They are an Audubon-certified golf
course, which means they have to do
many things to promote native plants,
animals, insects and birds on the
course,” Vigdal said. “They also have
to keep a running birding list for species
of birds on the course so we help
them with their bird counts and also
bring the public out to this great birding
event. It is a win-win for Brooks
and the Nature Center.”
Grab your binoculars and mark
your calendars for this summer series
of events. And if you are looking for
even more birding adventures make
sure to check out the live nest cam of
the Okoboji osprey at the Dickinson
County Nature Center’s website. F
A Weekend for Walleyes
Fishermen and women angle for $34,000 grand prize
It’s that time once again. Time to fish
out your favorite lures, bait, rods
and reels. Time to hunt for one of
those tagged but elusive fish during
the 34th Annual Iowa Great Lakes
Walleye Weekend.
Anglers have until midnight Friday,
May 6, to register for the tournament,
which runs from 12:01 a.m. Saturday,
May 7, until noon on Sunday, May
8. Registration is $15 for contestants
ages 15 and under and $25 for those
16 and older. The grand prize is a
whopping $34,000 if one of the
tagged walleye is caught during the
tournament.
A total of 10 tagged walleye will be
released into Big Spirit Lake, West and
East Lake Okoboji. In the event more
than one is caught the prize money
will be split equally.
A portion of the proceeds this year
will be donated to the Clean Water
Alliance.
“Fishing is such a big reason people
come to the lakes area so maintaining
the purity of the water is extremely
important,” Iowa Great Lakes Chamber
of Commerce CEO & President
Jeff Thee said.
The water of the Iowa Great Lakes
will be full of fishermen and women
vying for their chance at the grand
prize, a tradition that Thee has enjoyed
watching for many years.
“It’s considered to be the unofficial
kick-off to summer since it’s the first
big event with the ice out and the water
open,” Thee said.
“People come with family and
friends every year as a tradition to get
things going for their summer in the
lakes area. We do remind people it’s
Mother’s Day weekend so bring the
whole family in for a fun weekend.”
Speaking of summer, anglers who
spend the whole season fishing
the area shouldn’t forget about the
summer-long extendend contest.
For an additional $15, anglers can
participate in the contest until Labor
Day, with a tagged walleye netting a
percentage of the total entry fees collected.
The big show of course is during the
weekend.
Additional prizes will be awarded
for the heaviest northern pike, heaviest
stringer of five panfish, heaviest
stringer of ten bullhead and the Charlie
Shuck Memorial Award for heaviest
stringer of three walleye (under 17
inches).
Prizes will be given out during the
awards luncheon at Dickinson County
Expo Building on Sunday, May 8,
from noon-1:30 p.m.
The luncheon is free for all registered
contestants and $5 for nonregistered
guests.
For Jeff Thee it’s always fun to see
the fishermen getting going in the wee
Fogg (Wanagi Tatanka) has a new exhibit on
display at Pearson Lakes Art Center in Okoboji.
The through June 11 in the the Weaver
Lobby Gallery and McIlrath Landing.
Fogg was born in Los Angeles, CA, and
grew up near Fort Thompson, SD, on the
Crow Creek Reservation. He attended Flandreau
Indian School in Flandreau, SD, and
Dakota State College in Madison, SD.
A self-taught artist, Fogg uses materials
from native culture to create unique works of
art.
“He really pays close attention to detail
and I find it really interesting how he recycles
old items giving them new life,” Pearson
Exhibit
Lakes Art Center education director Holly
Zinn said.
This interesting and intriguing mixed
media approach especially enhances the traditional
and contemporary Native American
themes, historical periods and tribal legends
that Fogg chooses to explore.
Detailed pencil drawings, painting, bead
work and more can either stand alone or
combine into a mixed media masterpiece.
“He takes time figuring out how to uses
different materials to his advantage, putting
them to their best use and tying them to history,”
Zinn said.
view of tribal history, legend and much more
Opening night at Clay County Fair Speedway
YOUR
The second full season of racing at
Clay County Fair Speedway gets
going next Friday, May 6, with
opening night races.
Partnered with the International
Motor Contest Association, the speedway
will host weekly classes including
IMCA Modifieds, Stock Cars, Sports
Mods, Hobby Stocks, Sports Compacts
and Miniakota Micro Sprints.
There are 17 racing dates scheduled
for the 2016 season along with a bevy
of special events sprinkled throughout
the summer.
“We’re really excited about our second
full year of racing here at the fairgrounds,”
said Jeremy Parsons, Clay
County Fair CEO/Manager. “Drivers
and fans made the first full season
a huge success, and we can’t wait to
get back to racing action on Friday
nights.”
Adult general admission for regular
season races will be $10 and youth
ages 12 and under are admitted free
of charge.
Pit passes for regular season races
are $25. Hot Laps will start at 7 p.m.
with racing to begin at approximately
7:30 p.m.
“We want to continue growing bigger
and better, so we’re excited to get
started with our opening night races
in this second year,” marketing and
sponsorship manager Andrea Wiesenmeyer
said.
Part of that growth is a new, shorter
track constructed this year inside the
regular one specially created for the
600cc Miniakota Micro Sprints.
There will also be multiple special
event races this summer in addition to
the weekly Friday night schedule.
One will be a Rally 4 Veterans night
on June 3 and another will be the
Hawkeye Dirt Tour IMCA Racing Iowa
Speedweek kick off on Aug. 8.
“Kicking off the Hawkeye Dirt Tour
Speedweek is an exciting addition for
the CCF Speedway,” said Parsons.
“We have a first class racing facility
here at the fairgrounds and adding
special events like the Hawkeye Dirt
Tour will only help to grow our racing
series in the future.”
Coming up soon on May 13 will
be Family Fun Night with a package
including two adult tickets, four sodas
and four hot dogs for just $20.
The July 1 race event will feature hot
dogs for just one dollar in celebration
of Independence Day and a race night
on July 22 will include a “Kids Candy
Toss.”
It all adds up to some wholesome
family fun at the race track in Spencer.
“Our facility is outstanding, we have
a nice variety of race classes with a
bit of everything for race fans and we
really try to make it family friendly
so everyone can have a great time,”
Wiesenmeyer said. F
