<strong>DIS</strong>COVER! | APRIL 30, 2016 Nature | 7 RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER A Weekend for Walleyes Fishermen and women angle for $34,000 grand prize It’s that time once again. Time to fish out your favorite lures, bait, rods and reels. Time to hunt for one of those tagged but elusive fish during the 34th Annual Iowa Great Lakes Walleye Weekend. Anglers have until midnight Friday, May 6, to register for the tournament, which runs from 12:01 a.m. Saturday, May 7, until noon on Sunday, May 8. Registration is $15 for contestants ages 15 and under and $25 for those 16 and older. The grand prize is a whopping $34,000 if one of the tagged walleye is caught during the tournament. A total of 10 tagged walleye will be released into Big Spirit Lake, West and East Lake Okoboji. In the event more than one is caught the prize money will be split equally. A portion of the proceeds this year will be donated to the Clean Water Alliance. “Fishing is such a big reason people come to the lakes area so maintaining the purity of the water is extremely important,” Iowa Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce CEO & President Jeff Thee said. The water of the Iowa Great Lakes will be full of fishermen and women vying for their chance at the grand prize, a tradition that Thee has enjoyed watching for many years. “It’s considered to be the unofficial kick-off to summer since it’s the first big event with the ice out and the water open,” Thee said. “People come with family and friends every year as a tradition to get things going for their summer in the lakes area. We do remind people it’s Mother’s Day weekend so bring the whole family in for a fun weekend.” Speaking of summer, anglers who spend the whole season fishing the area shouldn’t forget about the summer-long extendend contest. For an additional $15, anglers can participate in the contest until Labor Day, with a tagged walleye netting a percentage of the total entry fees collected. The big show of course is during the weekend. Additional prizes will be awarded for the heaviest northern pike, heaviest stringer of five panfish, heaviest stringer of ten bullhead and the Charlie Shuck Memorial Award for heaviest stringer of three walleye (under 17 inches). Prizes will be given out during the awards luncheon at Dickinson County Expo Building on Sunday, May 8, from noon-1:30 p.m. The luncheon is free for all registered contestants and $5 for nonregistered guests. Entry: All contestants, regardless of age, must register and have paid their entry fee prior to the beginning of the contest. Contestants 15 years and younger $15, age 16 and above $25. 2. Tagged Walleye: A prize of $34,000 will be awarded to any registered contestant(s) who had paid the entry fee and caught the specially tagged walleye during contest hours. 10 specially tagged walleye will be released in Big Spirit Lake, East Lake Okoboji & West Lake Okoboji. If more than one specially tagged walleye is caught, the $34,000 grand prize will be split equally. 3. License: All entrants must comply with the law of the State of Iowa and have a valid Iowa fishing license as required by law. 4. Tackle: All fish must be caught by baited hook and/or artificial lure by mouth. Evidence of any other method will result on the prize or prizes not being awarded. 5. Fishing Area: The specially tagged walleye will be released in the Iowa Great Lakes Chain of Lakes: Big Spirit Lake, East Lake Okoboji & West Lake Okoboji. 6. Tournament Fishing Hours: The contest shall commence at 12:01 am on May 7, 2016 and run continuously until 12 p.m. on Sunday, May 8. Weigh-in at the designated weigh-in stations will not weigh contest fish after 12:00 pm on Sunday, May 8. 7. Official Weigh Stations: Kabele’s Trading Post 504 Hill Ave., Spirit Lake, IA. Pioneer Beach Resort Bait & Tackle, Oh Shucks Bait & Tackle, 2098 Hwy 86, Milford, IA. Stan’s Bait & Tackle, 2306 Okoboji Ave., Milford, IA. All fish must be recently caught to qualify. All weigh stations have computerized digital scales that are State of Iowa certified. 8.
