Brooks National Golf Club hosts birding event May 2<br />
Spring is here and that means it’s<br />
time to train your eye to look for<br />
birdies at Brooks National Golf<br />
Club in Okoboji.<br />
But it’s not the golf style of birdies<br />
you should watch for on Monday,<br />
May 2.<br />
There will be a number of people<br />
lining up to go around the course,<br />
but they’ll be armed with binoculars<br />
instead of golf clubs or balls.<br />
Once again this year, The Dickinson<br />
County Conservation Board is teaming<br />
up with Brooks National Golf<br />
Club to host Birding on the Green.<br />
The first event will be on Monday,<br />
May 2 at 7 a.m. There will be Birding<br />
on the Green events hosted throughout<br />
the summer months on the first<br />
Monday of each month from May<br />
through September. The other dates<br />
include June 6, July 11, Aug. 1 and<br />
Sept. 12. This event is open to all ages<br />
and it’s free.<br />
No matter if you are a long-time<br />
bird watching enthusiast or an amateur,<br />
all are welcome.<br />
The event will be led by experienced<br />
local area birders Ed Thelen and Lee<br />
Schoenewe. They’ll be on hand to<br />
help both beginning and experienced<br />
birders to identify a number of different<br />
bird species. They’ll teach them<br />
how to identify birds both by sight<br />
and by sound.<br />
According to Kiley Roth, the community<br />
relations coordinator with<br />
the Dickinson County Conservation<br />
Board, the birders spy 40-60 avian<br />
species on average at each of the Birding<br />
on the Green events.<br />

spotted at these events have included<br />
kingbirds, bluebirds, wood ducks and<br />
migrating warblers.<br />
“We are always looking for new species,”<br />
said naturalist Charles Vigdal.<br />
And they are hopeful that this May<br />
event will offer up a wide variety of<br />
birds for the group to check out. According<br />
to Roth, the May and September<br />
events often feature the widest variety<br />
of birds as they migrate through<br />
the Iowa Great Lakes area.<br />
“I would like to see what woodpeckers<br />
might be there, maybe some<br />
flickers,” said naturalist intern Jessica<br />
Tramp. She added that she would also<br />
love to see a scarlet tanager. “They are<br />
supposed to be here now. I would love<br />
to see one.”<br />
And Brooks National Golf Club<br />
might be the perfect place to see some<br />
of these interesting birds.<br />
“This program is a partnership with<br />
our neighbors Brooks Golf Course.<br />
They are an Audubon-certified golf<br />
course, which means they have to do<br />
many things to promote native plants,<br />
animals, insects and birds on the<br />
course,” Vigdal said. “They also have<br />
to keep a running birding list for species<br />
of birds on the course so we help<br />
them with their bird counts and also<br />
bring the public out to this great birding<br />
event. It is a win-win for Brooks<br />
and the Nature Center.”<br />
