I’m struggling to get caught up on my sleep<br />
this week. It was prom Saturday night and I<br />
don’t bounce back the way I did when I was<br />
younger.<br />
It’s not that I was concerned<br />
about my two<br />
high school students. I<br />
knew the kids they were<br />
with, I knew the adults<br />
chaperoning the dance<br />
and the after prom<br />
festivities and I knew<br />
the parents hosting the<br />
early morning breakfast.<br />
My lack of sleep<br />
had nothing to do with<br />
worrying about either<br />
one of them.<br />

It is tied to the fact I didn’t sleep much in the<br />
weeks leading up to prom as decorating the<br />
gymnasium and transforming it into an island<br />
paradise was my responsibility.<br />
In the months leading up to this gig I was<br />
planning a 14-foot volcano, a 65-foot sunset,<br />
two dozen palm trees and an underwater<br />
dance floor.<br />
I would go to bed at night and wake up 90<br />
minutes later with some new task for my to-do<br />
list. After that I couldn’t get my brain to shut off<br />
and I would sleep intermittently for the next<br />
five hours, then give up and get up for the day.<br />
When the big night arrived things had come<br />
together really nicely, but apparently the stress<br />
was too much. On a night when I should have<br />
slept like a rock, I suffered through a migraine.<br />
And the next day I had to function enough to<br />
orchestrate taking everything back down.<br />
Despite all that, I had a great time. I got to<br />
work with dedicated volunteers and took advantage<br />
of the vision of several talented artists<br />
and designers.<br />
Will I do it again next year? Absolutely. Be-<br />
Iowa cause Information my kids both said it was a great prom.<br />
