It can help prevent wear & tear on other fence systems, it can teach horses to respect the fence line, and also can create a safer environment when two paddocks or pastures share a common fence line. Contact your sales staff to help you determine if electric fence is right for you and your horses. Careful planning of your fence design and advanced preparation is the key to proper installation and long term trouble free electric fence operation. The first step in the installation is laying out the site to be fenced. (Do you simply need to keep your horses off of a fence line?) 3. Is this an interior fence that is backed up by a perimeter fence? 4. Will your horses challenge the fence? (will there be mares & foals or stallions? Is this a smaller turnout area?) 5. Is this a temporary fenceline? ( are you splitting a pasture for rotational grazing during the summer months?) number of strands 1. What type of horses will be turned out in this area? Quiet Mature horses, Mares & Foals, Stallions, More active Performance Horses? 2. What is the size of the paddock? Is it a smaller turnout, or a large pasture area? 3. What other perimeter or barrier fencing is already existing? Is there an existing row of trees that acts as a visual barrier as well? Do you have an existing perimeter fence? 4. Is this temporary or permanent fencing? Will this be a seasonal fence? determine the quality and type of material that you will require. Choose from the following keeping in mind the answers to the questions that you had. • Posts – Wooden, Metal T-posts, PVC Sleeves over Metal T-posts, or temporary Step-in posts. ( see page 22) • Electric Strand – Braid, Rope, 1.5” Tape, 4” Tape, (See pages 18-20) • Size of Charger – This will depend on the footage and the number of strands. (see page 23) • Type of insulator – For specific product and depending on the style of posts • Corner/End Insulator Requirements • Gate requirements – will you go under the gate with burial wire or one strand of electric across the gate (see page 22) determine the type of soil conditions that you are dealing with when installing your electric fence and the location of your ground rods. Dry or sandy soil may require a fence charger with greater power than in moist areas where green foliage is abundant year round. Dry or barren ground is a poor conductor of electricity. Voltage returning to the fence charger will decline substantially in these conditions. In arid regions or sandy soil areas it may be necessary to install grounding around the fence to achieve maximum fence efficiency. leave room for expansion. When choosing the fence charger it is recommended to not only consider the area being fenced, but to look ahead at fence to be added later. That way the right charger may be purchased the first time around. Location of the fence charger is also vital to your fence as this becomes the heart of your entire system. Locate the fence charger close to or at the fence where 110 volt power is accessible. Placing the charger under cover is recommended as under the eave or inside of a building. the grounding system - your electric fence’s performance will all depend on your grounding system. Installing a minimum of 3 - 6 foot long ground rods, 10 feet apart will insure maximum efficiency in the operation of you electric fence system. Inadequate grounding is the most common failure in electric fence operation. Consider that the grounding system of an electric fence is similar to the antennae on a television set, the larger the antennae, the greater the reception. Ground rods serve to collect the voltage as it passed from the fence, into the animals, through the earth and returns to the fence charger completing the circuit. The animal will only feel the amount of power that returns back to the fence charger; therefore it is critical that the ground field, like the antennae, is large enough to insure the collection of all available power. gates - Location of gates, type, and amount of traffic going through the area is an important consideration. Installing metal gates in high traffic areas and in corners makes handling animals easier. Electric gates are great for pasture separations or implement traffic.
1. Make an accurate sketch of area to be fenced 2.Determine gate locations, total fencing footage, corners, terminations or ends. NOTE: A - With Flex-Fence all posts out of line are considered corner posts and must be braced and/or set in concrete. B- Bracing or concrete is required for terminations and corners (starting, stopping points, corners, and posts out of a straight line). Steep inclines or declines could require a concrete brace at the point of the sharpest angle or angles. As always, check manufacturers recommendations for installation. Standard post spacing WITH HORSES for Flex-Fence is 8 ‘ (small areas, high traffic areas or round pens), 10’ (medium size pastures), or 12’ (for large areas) PVC post spacing must be 8’ on center. Woven wire is best set at 8’ or 10’ post spacing. Electric tape post spacing at 8’ or 10’. Braids and ropes at 8’, 10’, 12’, 16’ or 20’. Stake out all corners, ends, and lines. 2. Clear bushes and old fence from lines 3. Determine gate locations 4. Decide if you will fence your trees out or put fencing around them. Trees can give horses needed shade, but they must be protected from your horses. 5. Consider aisles between paddocks rather than common fence lines. 6. Consider your equipment needs present and future when choosing a gate size. NOTE: it is easier for one person to open two smaller gates then one large gate. 7.
