NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS
NAIDOC Week is a time for all of us to come
together and celebrate the actions and
accomplishments, not only of Darkinjung
as a Land Council but also the Indigenous
community as a whole.
NAIDOC Week will be held from Sunday 3 July
– Sunday 10 July this year, with Darkinjung
hosting a number of activities for our members
and local community to enjoy.
The theme for NAIDOC Week 2016 is Songlines
– The living narrative of our nation and will
highlight the importance of Songlines to the
existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people.
Being the oldest living narrative of Indigenous
nations, The National NAIDOC Committee
has encourages us to explore and celebrate
how, through Songlines, Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people remain connected to
Country and have been able to maintain and
share sacred stories and ceremonies for tens of
thousands of years.
As in previous years, Darkinjung will hold
a number of events throughout the week
including a Golf Day and Family Fun Day which
will have plenty of activities to keep the whole
family entertained.
Darkinjung Chief Executive Officer Sean Gordon
said, “NAIDOC Week celebrations would have
to be one of my favourite times of the year.
It’s so great to see everyone come together
to acknowledge the contribution Indigenous
people make to our community.
“Our members play an integral part in the
majority of Darkinjung’s projects and this is a
great opportunity for us to show our gratitude
for this.
“We look forward to hosting some fantastic
events for everyone to enjoy,” concluded Sean.
DARKINJUNG BARKER COLLEGE – OPENS ITS DOORS
In continuing with the Land Council’s
commitment to ensuring community growth
and development, Darkinjung was thrilled to
celebrate the opening of Darkinjung Barker
College at Yarramalong during January.
The recently opened school is an exciting new
joint venture with Sydney-based private school
Barker College. The new campus will cater for
Kindergarten to Year 6 students and is modelled
on the successful Gawura School that operates
at Central Sydney’s St Andrews Cathedral School
in conjunction with the Redfern community.
Commenting on the opening of the school,
Darkinjung Chairperson Tina West said, “We see
the venture as a rare opportunity to directly
take steps to close the gap in educational
opportunities for Aboriginal people on the
Central Coast.
“We are so excited to have our very first group
of students start their schooling year at the
campus in 2016. We are thrilled to be able
to offer a new school environment for these
25 Indigenous children and look forward to
welcoming even more students in the years to
come,” added Tina.
Darkinjung will be heavily involved with the
new campus, allowing the children to learn
about culture and heritage and the importance
of cultural identity and being proud of their
Aboriginal heritage.
“The new campus has provided a significant
boost in employment opportunities for our
Indigenous community. In addition, our
students and staff will enjoy great amenities
and benefit from a nurturing, educational and
cultural environment,” continued Tina.
“We are ecstatic with the number of enrolments
for 2016, we hope our new students have a
great first year and we look forward to many
more wonderful years to come,” Tina concluded.
“The new campus will
provide a significant
boost in employment
opportunities for our
Indigenous community.”
