It’s Mother’s
day too...
Finding that perfect outfit for your
daughter’s (or your son’s) wedding is
one of the most stressful missions the
Mother of the Bride has to undertake.
How smart should you be? Will you be
overdressed or under-dressed? Should you go
for a hat or a fascinator or even a beautiful hair
accessory? The style predicaments seem
limitless. So we’ve put together some of our
top tips:
First things first
Find out from the happy couple just how formal
their wedding is going to be, where it’s going to
be and whether the bride has chosen a colour
theme. That will determine the formality of your
own outfit and give you some colour ideas.
Start early
Give yourself somewhere close to six months to
find your outfit - especially if you’re used to a
completely informal look. You need time to get
your head round the occasion, settle on a style,
find all your accessories and have any alterations
done to ensure that perfect fit.
Talk to people
As well as the bride, have a heart-to-heart with
the other important Mum - she’s probably as
worried about choosing her outfit as you are.
You don’t have to co-ordinate with the bridesmaids or each other, but it’s
useful to know you’ll all look good together on the photographs.
Comfort is important
You’re going to be wearing your outfit all day and all evening
(unless you plan to change), so choose something you can walk,
talk, sit and dance easily in. You should be wearing the dress, it
shouldn’t be wearing you.
Accessorise...
...carefully. Great accessories can transform a plain, but
classic dress into a fabulous, glamorous outfit. Having
said that, remember less is sometimes more so, once
you’ve chosen, dress yourself up from top to toe and
take a good look at how it all works together.
...and when it comes to shoes...
Don’t go for vertiginously high heels if you’re not used to
them and do buy your shoes a few months before the wedding so
you have a chance to wear them in. You’re going to be on your feet for much
of the day and if you’re in pain, you won’t be able to hide it!
