Mindbender
Sir Plutus has forgotten that he no longer has anything of
value in his wall safe, so he recently had one of those newfangled
electronic security locks installed. It has eight
ordinary up-down toggle switches labeled A to H. The
instructions that came with the device were crystal clear. To
open it, all Sir Plutus has to do is set each switch either up or
down such that,
Neither B nor C is the same as D.
G is down only if E is not the same as H.
A and G are different if (but only if) E and G are both in the
same position.
G is down if D is down, but G is up if B is down.
D is up, unless E is the same as F.
A is not the same as B if either A or E is down.
A, F, and G are not all in the same position.
It may or may not confuse the burglars, but it has certainly
confused Sir Plutus. How should the switches be set to open
the safe?
