INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART
Elampillai
Village of creative
10
handloom weavers
Elampillai is a small village situated in the
district of Salem in the state of Tamilnadu, India.
It is around 25 KM from the Salem town. It is a
thinly populated village.
The people here are engaged in
agriculture and handloom weaving.
The average educational level is
around 10th standard.
Handloom Industry
Elampillai is well known for
handloom products in silk, cotton,
polyester and silkhon (110 Dinear).
The major community who is
engaged in weaving is Vanniyar.
It is from Elampillai, Silk Sarees
are send to Tirupathi temple for
decorating the deity during poojas.
They are sending around 100
Sarees per month through Cooptex,
the co-operative society
of handlooms in Tamilnadu. The
specialty of Elampillai Saree is
the Butta designs in the pallu and
border.
INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART
12
Specialty
of Elampillai Saree
Elampillai handlooms are
well known for the durability
of the colours used in the
yarn. The quality of colour
gives the durability. The
count used in weaving gives
the softness and hardness
of the fabric. Count means
the number of threads used
in the length and breadth
for weaving known as warp
and weft respectively. In
Elampillai the count used is
80 by 80 for weaving. The
width of the saree comes to
51 inches. Each and every
thread of the Elampillai
handloom saree is hand
woven. Each weaver works
from home with all his / her
family members helping
in different steps of the
process. In Elampillai cotton,
silk, polyester and silkhon
(110 Dinear) handloom
sarees are weaved. They
also weave silk fabric for
shirts.
Dyeing
The process of
manufacturing an Elampillai
handloom Saree starts with
dyeing the silk yarn. Dyeing
is the coloring process of the
yarn by dipping the yarn in
the boiled color water in very
high temperature, higher
the temperature durability
of colour will be more.
Dyeing of the yarn is done
making sure that the color
is spread uniformly
throughout the yarn
and it does not
affect the quality
of the yarn.
The coloring
process is a very
crucial step in
getting a good
colourful saree.
The colours are
applied as per the
specifications of the
designers and also
some times as per the
orders from customers who
orders for a designer Saree.
After coloring, the silk yarn is
dried in shade. Drying yarn in
sun can be harmful to yarn.
Weaving
After dyeing and drying the
yarn it is converted to thread
and is loaded as warp which
is called pavvu and then it
is loaded into the loom for
actual weaving. It is also
rolled over small sticks to
use for weft. One pavvu
will make 13 sarees. It will
take 1 month to complete
weaving of one pavvu.
Elampillai handloom sarees
are traditionally woven in the
interlocked-weft technique.
Designs
The
design
required on the saree is
initially drawn in a computer
and then this is punched
into a card and these cards
are loaded in Jacard in the
loom. Jacard is a box like
structure which is fixed in the
top of the loom. There will be
needles in the Jacard which
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

will read the punched cards
and control the weaving of
weft.
Decline of
Handloom
industry in
Elampillai
Due to the high
cost of silk yarn
now the weavers
of Elampillai
struggling to
continue in the
profession. Now there
are only very few weavers
weaving Elampillai silk
handloom products. Once
famous Elampillai Handloom
products are now becoming
extinct due to the high cost
of silk yarn and low wages
prevailing in the industry.
Previously Elampillai was
full of talented weavers who
used to do magic in the
looms to produce the best
handloom products. There
is an emergency situation
to take necessary action
to protect the traditional
Elampillai handloom
products.
Voice of handloom
weaver’s
The weavers of Elampillai
blame the mushrooming
power looms for the high cost
of silk yarn. The weavers
demand a responsible role
by the government to protect
the handloom industry
by providing subsidy for
yarn and a rehabilitation
package for the weavers
who are suffering due to
high cost of yarn and low
wages prevailing in the
industry. They hope that if
the government takes the
responsibility to support the
handloom industry by way of
showcasing and marketing
the handloom products, the
industry can survive or else
the present situation has
started the end of handloom
industry in Elampillai. The
new generation is not
interested in the profession
Elampillai
handlooms are
well known for
the durability
of the colours
used in the yarn.
The quality of
colour gives the
durability. The
count used in
weaving gives
the softness and
hardness of the
fabric.
due to the hard labour and
long hours to bring out the
finished product, the returns
are also not lucrative to make
them stay in the profession.
Due to the non availability
of weavers the handloom
industry is fastly shifting to
power looms.
INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION
BAZIGAR
with ethnical identity
14
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Bazigars are a nomad gipsy-folk of
India and Pakistan who are found
throughout North India. They live a
different life from the surrounding
Hindu population and still preserve
the ethnical identity.
T
They mostly make their
livings as jugglers, makers,
basket-weavers and
fortune-tellers and in true
European gipsy fashion
each clan has its king. They
are found in the states of
Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan
and Uttar Pradesh.
The Bazigar are further subdivided
into five sub-groups,
the Jogi, Badtia (vertiya),
Mushal (muchhals),
Dharamsot and Namsout.
The first four sub-divisions
cannot intermarry, but
Namsout only marry within
the clan. The Bazigar were
either Hindu or Muslim, but
with the departure of their
Muslim patrons, the Bazigar
have embraced Sikhism.
They have also abandoned
their traditional dialect
Bazigar boli for standard
Punjabi.
The name Bazigar is
derived from the Urdu
word bazi, which means an
acrobat. They claims to be
Chauhan Rajputs, who took
the occupation of acrobatics
to escape the persecution
and attempts of forcefull
convertion to Islam during
the period of the Mughal
Emperor Aurangzeb. They
have now been granted
Scheduled Caste status
in Haryana, Punjab and
Uttar Pradesh. The Bazigar
speak their own dialect,
known as bazigar boli,
while speaking in Hindi with
outsiders.
History of
Centuries
Ahluwalia
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Ahluwalia is derived from a place name
Ahlu + -walia, a Panjabi adjectival suffix.
According to Ibbetson (1916), Ahlu is the
name of a village near Lahore which was
founded by Sada Singh Kalal, a man of the
Kalal community.
The Ahluwalia or Ahluwale
Caste are a Punjabi community
in the Punjab region of
northwestern India.
There are many stories
regarding the Ahluwalia
community. The identity of
Ahluwalia caste is that of ‘Kalal’.
Kalal is a caste of professional
distillers and wine-sellers.
During 18th century , one of
the member of Kalal caste
by the name of Jassa Kalal
converted to Sikhism and rose to
prominence . His descendants
started calling themselves
‘Ahluwalia’ because Jassa Kalal
was from the village ‘Ahlo’.
Ahluwalia is a Sikh clan from
India, that originated from a misl
of the same name; the name
Ahluwalia is derived from Ahlu,
the ancestral village of the misl
leaders. The Ahluwalia misl was
one of the 12 major Sikh misls,
and held land to the north of
Sutlej river.
Sultan ul Quam Nawab Jassa
Singh Ahluwalia was born at the
village of Ahlu, in Lahore district
of Punjab, (Majha region), in
the year 1718. Ahlu village was
established by his ancestor,
Sadda singh, a disciple of the
sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Har
Gobind. His forefathers were
Kalals (wine merchants) and
hence, he is also referred to as
“Jassa Singh Kalal”.
Jassa Singh, is said to have
been the most powerful and
influential chief that the Sikhs
ever had till the rise of Ranjit
Singh. The Ahluwalias ruled
Kapurthala, a district in the
Panjab which was once a small
princely state.
Sri Krishna
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Naughty little Krishna and Balarama started
moving around. Playfully, they crawled together on
their knees and arms. The sound of their ankle bells
were delightful. These children used to mistake women
passers-by for their mother and crawl
behind them.
The women used to enjoy
the sight of the charming
crawlers and exclaim,
“Oh, see how Krishna and
Balarama are crawling!”
In their curiosity, the tiny
tots would sometimes
catch the ends of the tails
of the calves. The calves,
frightened by the touch
would begin to flee here and
there. The little ones would
hold tightly to them, as if they
are afraid. The calves, still
more frightened, would run
all the more. The ladies used
to rescue the children and
would laugh and enjoy the
fun.
Days passed by merrily in
Gokula. Rama and Krishna
were growing up. They
began to run on their feet.
Joining with other boys the
two kids began their pranks.
Their mischief delighted the
hearts of the Gopis. Yasoda
had to often listen to the
complaints about her son’s
mischief in the houses of the
Gopis.
One of them would tell her,
“Yesterday Krishna came
to my house early in the
morning. I was busy getting
ready to milk the cows. I
went to the cowshed and
what did I find? Krishna had
long back untied the calf
which had drunk all the milk.
When I turned back, I saw
him standing at a distance
with a mischievous look on
his face. I tried to chase him,
but he took to his heels and
disappeared into another
house.”
STORY FOR KIDS
26
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

I was careful and Krishna could
not find anything to eat in my home.
So he pinched my sleeping child.
It began to cry. Laughing merrily
Krishna ran away.
Another Gopi would tell her
complaint, “Your son is an
expert thief! He devises
a hundred ways to steal
butter and curds from my
house. He eats up some of
it and the rest he gives to
the monkeys which eagerly
wait on the trees. If he
cannot reach the pots which
are kept high, he throws
stones and breaks the pots.
He stands below with his
friends, mouths wide open.
They drink the curd falling
from the pot.”
Another Gopi would say,
“I was careful and Krishna
could not find anything to eat
in my home. So he pinched
my sleeping child. It began to
cry. Laughing merrily Krishna
ran away.”
Yet another complained, “I
kept the milk and curd high
on a swing hanging from
the ceiling. Krishna and
Balarama came there, but
could not reach it. They piled
up various planks. Above
them they placed the tripod
I use for churning the butter.
On that Balarama climbed.
Still they could not reach.
Then Krishna climbed on
the back of Balarama. All
the butter was swallowed.
Just then I entered the room
and caught hold of Krishna.
But he was undaunted. And
what a look he had! Silently
he said as it were, ‘I am the
owner of this house and you
are the thief.’
“I had just washed my
house” said another,
‘ ‘Krishna came and
demanded butter. I said, ‘I
have nothing to give’. Then
in retaliation, when I was
busy with the household
work, he brought all sorts
of mud from outside, threw
it all into the house and ran
away”.
Each Gopi narrated their
own tale of woe. But all the
while none was angry with
Krishna Rather they all
enjoyed his pranks. Krishna
was all the while listening
to the tales about Himself
standing in a corner with a
mischievous look.
Yasoda turned towards him
with angry eyes. At this,
tears filled his eyes. Who
could bear to see Krishna in
tears? Mother Yasoda took
him on her lap at once. The
beautiful face of Krishna, his
innocent eyes and his sweet
smile always haunted the
minds of the Gopis.
HEALTHY LIVING
Healthy living makes you
a happier person
Finding happiness in your everyday
life can make a positive impact on your
overall health. Leading a healthy lifestyle
may not necessarily be following an
eating and exercise plan.
28
Happiness has a positive
effect in lowering cortisol
levels, the stress hormone
that is related to health
conditions like type 2
diabetes, hypertension, and
autoimmune diseases.
Gabrielle Bernstein, in her
newest New York Times
best-seller, Miracles Now,
writes that meditation helps
“because it gives you time
to reflect, bring inner peace,
and make a true assessment
of where you are in your life
and where you can go.”
A study from JAMA Internal
Medicine reveals that
meditation can help reduce
stress and ease symptoms
of anxiety and depression,
which are related to myriad
health conditions.
How to make your day
happier everyday
Make your first thought
of the day a happy one.
“When we look at ourselves
in the mirror everyday
morning and think of all the
things we want to change,
that’s a choice we make,”
says Bernstein. “Make
the commitment to think
differently about yourself
and make happiness the first
thing of the day.”
Snap out of a negative
mindset. Plagued by
undesirable or destructive
thoughts about yourself or
others can make your day
uninteresting. Take out these
feelings out of your mind,
which can carry on your day
happily.
Unleash your inner child.
When we become more
childlike, we grow our
capacity for curiosity and
creativity. “Open up to
silliness and have more fun.
That childlike energy brings
us a much more positive
perspective and releases
tension,” Bernstein says.
Sleep peacefully. Sleep is
essential to optimal health.
It is a spiritual practice that
benefits us mentally and
emotionally. To help you
get a restful night of sleep,
Bernstein recommends
using this simple Kundalini
breathing technique. Sit up
straight on your bed and
breathe in using a U breath
(Pucker your mouth as if
you were holding a quarter
between your lips.). Breathe
in and exhale through your
nose. Continue this cycle of
breath for one minute.
36
Republican presidential front-runner Donald
Trump has mimiced Indian accent to mock a call
T
Trump said that he called
Uttarakhand Crisis
are courts going overboard
The Uttarakhand high court said that the President’s decision to
suspend the state assembly is “open for judicial review” as even he
The bench of Chief Justice
40
there were 27 BJP MLAs
and 9 Congress MLAs who
sought division on March
18. There is absolutely no
material for the cabinet to
say that 35 MLAs sought
division. The Governor’s
report is silent on this. This is
very crucial,” said the bench.
“Why is it the concern of the
Governor. Does that warrant
imposition of President’s
Rule? This is irrelevant. And
I must say that I’m shocked,”
said the bench.
“Why was the complaint filed
on April 5 after President’s
Rule was imposed? We were
thinking why the Speaker
has double standards (that
he disqualified the nine
rebel Congress MLAs but
kept the complaint against
Arya pending). This is
terrible. You are making
such terrible allegations
(against the Speaker). Is this
how Government of India
functions? What do you
(Centre) have to say about
this? This is not to be taken
lightly as that (Speaker’s
conduct regarding
disqualification) was also
the basis of President’s
satisfaction. We are taking a
serious note of this,” said the
bench.
The over enthusiasm
in blaming the central
government and making
unnecessary comment on
the President of India by the
Uttarakhand high court has
surprised many. The courts
remarks were seen as a
biased approach in favouring
the Congress and Harish
Rawat government.
Elated Rawat and his men
had taken as many as 11
cabinet decisions in two
cabinet meetings. However,
his reinstation was only a
one night stand, when the
Supreme court stayed the
High court’s order. A bench
of Justices Dipak Misra and
blocked the revival of the
Harish Rawat-led Congress
“What has been happening is
matter for any state, you
don’t revoke President’s rule
just like that. Everything has
to be looked into a balance
has to be struck,” said
the bench as it expressed
displeasure at the High Court
for not releasing a written
judgment.
It asserted: “There has to be
a balance. We are slightly
concerned…Article 356
(Presidential proclamation)
is a serious matter for
both sides…there are a few
matters of propriety. If the
High Court had signed the
judgment, we could have
looked into it. For a party
to take remedial action,
a written order has to be
there.”
Justice Singh said: “If I were
the High Court judge, I would
have made my judgment
on propriety than legality.
“Interference by a
proclamation is a serious
issue. We will take on record
Rafale Combat
Aircraft Deal
in the final stage
42
Defence minister Manohar Parrikar has said
that the Rafale aircraft deal with France it is not
complete as yet, but at an “advanced stage” and
the intention is to “close it quite soon”.
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

The government “saved” public
money and the deal has resulted in a
gain of “technological knowledge”
and “strengthening the air power to
defend the border”, it had said.
“I can only tell you this
much that while the deal is
in quite an advanced stage,
and we intent to close it
quite soon, I still can’t say
that negotiations are totally
cleared until we sign the
deal or at least the deal is
forwarded to the Cabinet for
approval,” Parrikar said.
The cost of the 36 Rafales,
as per the earlier tender,
comes to around Rs 65,000
crore. India has been
bargaining for a price that
is less than 8 billion Euro
(Rs 59,000 crore). “The deal
to buy 36 state-of-the-art
Rafale aircraft from France
at 12 billion dollar (Rs 80000
crore) was re-negotiated and
Six renowned aircraft
of India. The Initial bidders
were Lockheed Martin’s
Eurofighter Typhoon,
Russia’s MiG-35, Sweden’s
Saab’s Gripen and Rafale.
All aircrafts were tested by
Rafale — were shortlisted.
Dassault bagged the
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Anant
Laxman Kanhere
Brave revolutionary and
freedom fighter
Anant Laxman Kanhere was born in 1891 at
Bramhanwadi, Aayani (Anjani), a small village
in Khed Taluka, Ratnagiri district. He had two
brothers and two sisters. He completed his
primary education in Nizamabad (which was then
also called as Indur), and his English education
took place in Aurangabad.
Anantrao used to stay with his
friend Gangaram Marwadi, who
was a businessman, in connection
with his studies. Ganagram had
taken the oath of ‘Abhinav Bharat’.
Gangaram first put Anantrao to
the test before giving him the oath
of patriotism. Gopalrao Dharap
was a member of Abhinav Bharat
in Nashik. Anantrao was enraged
when he learnt that Babarao
Savarkar was shackled and
paraded in public due to tyrannical
Jackson. He expressed his wish to
Gopalrao to eliminate Jackson.
Jackson, the district collector
of Nashik tried his best to see
that people were scared of the
British and they kept away from
any efforts towards acquiring
independence. A British officer
named William had kicked to
death an innocent farmer; but
"
Jackson protected him. He
punished all the youth who
sang ‘Vande Mataram’. He
proved advocate Khare to
be mad for providing legal
aid to the patriots and sent
him to jail in Dharwad. He
drove away a scholar, Tambe
Shastri from Nashik who
used to create awareness
amongst the youth about
independence through
stories from the ‘Puranas’.
He got Babarao Savarkar
arrested for publishing
patriotic songs and paraded
him in shackles. Babarao
was transported from Nashik.
The hypocritical and cruel
Jackson became a thorn in
the side of revolutionaries.
On 19th September 1909,
Anantrao went to Nashik
from Aurangabad by train.
He was given his own gun by
Vinayakrao Deshpande. He
went to the district collector’s
office and observed Jackson.
Jackson was promoted from
the post of district collector
and was transferred from
Nashik. Programs were being
arranged to bid him farewell.
I carried out this auspicious act to take
revenge for the oppression of Hindu people by
the British. I punished the oppressor Jackson
with death.
"
The revolutionaries thought
that it would become difficult
to kill Jackson once he was
transferred from Nashik and
therefore, they decided to kill
him soon.
Anna Karve was in Nashik
at that time. He made a
plan to kill Jackson. On 29th
December 1909, a Marathi
drama titled ‘Sharda’ was
staged by Kirloskar Theaters
in honour of Jackson and
in the interval of this play,
there was going to be
a felicitation of Jackson
followed by a few speeches.
Anna Karve finalized this
day to kill Jackson. He gave
two Browning pistols, sent
by Swa. Savarkar from
London, to Anantrao. It was
decided that after firing at
Jackson, he should shoot
himself or eat a poisonous
sweet. In case Anantrao
failed to kill Jackson, Anna
Karve would do the job and
if even he failed, Vinayakrao
Deshpande would fire at
Jackson.
As Jackson was entering the
theatre hall, Anantrao swiftly
took out his revolver and shot
at Jackson from behind but
the bullet missed the target
and flew past Jackson’s
hand; then immediately,
Anantrao came forward and
shot 4 times at Jackson from
thefront. Bleeding, Jackson
collapsed on the floor. He
told Todarmal and Khopkar,
police officers, “I carried out
this auspicious act to take
revenge for the oppression of
Hindu people by the British.
I punished the oppressor
Jackson with death. I do not
want to run away.”
As per the verdict, Anant
Kanhere, Anna Karve and
Vinayak Deshpande were
sentenced to death. On
19th April 1910, these 3
young men were sent to the
gallows at 7.00 a.m. in Thane
jail; they looked very calm
and brave. At the age of 18,
Anant Kanhere sacrificed
his life for the freedom of our
country.
LIFE STYLE
56
Kick out bad habits,
cultivate good habits
for A Healthy
life style
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Everybody is interested in having a healthy life style. But
unfortunately, it is not becoming possible due to the bad
habits one has. It is necessary to kick out the bad habits
and practise good habits. Bad habits like smoking, excessive
alcoholic consumption, eating junk foods, etc will have a
great impact on anybody’s health.
Excuses of time constraint is not an
option for eating junk foods. Excuse
of pressure and stress is not an option
for smoking or excessive alcoholic
consumption. You have to quit these
unhealthy habits ASAP. Bring in good
habits, that can make your life more
relaxing. Go natural for a healthy life.
Here are some of the healthy habits you
love to cultivate for a healthy life style.
Sleep for atleast seven
and eight hours.
Long-term research studies reveals
that people who get significantly less
sleep than seven hours a night may die
younger. Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler,
president of the American Academy of
Sleep Medicine, says seven to eight
hours is the sweet spot.
Be in tandom with nature
More and more researches reveal that,
just how important it is for people to be
one with nature. People who live close
to a good amount of green space are
healthier than those who live farther
away from it.
Spending more time with
your loved ones can make
you relaxed and happy
Researches reveal that people who
have strong “social networks” (loving
friends and family members) reap many
health benefits, but people without
strong social bonds tend to fare much
worse.
Cook and eat your food at
home
A study of Cambridge University has
found that elderly Taiwanese people
who cooked most of their meals lived
longer than those who did not prepare
the majority of their food at home.
Cooking your own food gives you much
greater control of what goes in it. You
can make healthy ingredient swaps as
per your taste.
Fruits and veggies are
always the best bet
A huge study from Harvard reveals
that people who eat a lot of fruits and
veggies happen to have lower rates
of cardiovascular disease. Especially,
if you’re talking green, leafy veggies,
cruciferous veggies, and citrus fruits.
Successful life
Healthy relationships allow both partners
Successful
Romance makes
Life Beautiful
Romance is an interesting word. It conjures
up all kinds of thoughts for both men and
women. Desire is a key part of romance.
Romance is really the act of wooing one
another.
MAY 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

LOVE & ROMANCE
It’s a longing to be with
someone you love and acting
in such a way that makes that
person’s desire to be with
you.
For many couples, romance is
easy before marriage, when
there were no kids to distract
, no pressures of finances to
fight over, no annoying habits
to live with. After marriage,
these things start to eat away
your longing to be with your
spouse.
Simple tips can light up your
romance in a better way with
love and lust.
64
Communicate. As simple
as it seems, you need to
talk to each other. Share
your thoughts, expose your
feelings instead of keeping
them to yourself. If you do
this regularly, you will start
to see your spouse with
depth and color. You’ll begin
to appreciate his or her
ambitions and desires.
Keep short accounts and
extend forgiveness regularly.
Nothing will ruin a desire to be
with your spouse faster than
resentment and bitterness.
It also ruins your spouse’s
desire to be with you. As you
let go of harboured hurts,
you will be free to love your
spouse, no matter how many
mistakes he or she has made.
As a result your mate will love
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Never stop
saying, “I love
you.” The words
“I love you”
especially
when you’ve
he or she has
disappointed
you in some
way.
you even more.
Live selflessly. As you put your
above your own, you will find
Bhubaneswar is the capital city of the state of Orissa
or Odhisha, India. Bhubaneswar is situated in the
eastern coastal plains of Orissa and south-west
of the Mahanadi River at an altitude of 45 meters
above sea level. The modern city of Bhubaneswar
was designed by the German architect Otto
Konigsberg in 1946.
History
The city has a long history
of over 2000 years starting
with Chedi dynasty (around
2nd century BC) that had
Sisupalgarh near present-day
Bhubaneswar as their capital.
Historically Bhubaneswar
has been known by different
names such as Toshali,
Kalinga Nagari, Nagar Kalinga,
Ekamra Kanan, Ekamra
Kshetra and Mandira Malini
Nagari otherwise known as the
Together with Puri, Konark
and Bhubaneswar forms
the ‘Swarna Tribhuja’ (the
‘Golden Triangle’), one of
the most visited destinations
in East India. It has a proud
possession of magnificent
sculptures and architectural
heritage, coupled with the
sanctity as Ekamra Kshetra,
makes it one of the great
Hindu religious centres of
Orissa since early medieval
Lingaraj Temple
The 10th or 11th century
Lingaraj temple of
Bhubaneswar has been
described as “the truest fusion
of dream and reality”. It is
dedicated to Lord Shiva. The
Lingaraj temple has been
rated as one of the finest
examples of Hindu temples
in India by Ferguson, the
noted art critic and historian.
The surface of the 55 m-high
Lingaraj temple is covered
with carvings. Tradition among
Hindus exist, that one should
visit the Lingaraj Temple
before visiting the Jagannath
as ‘time quintessence
of Orissan architecture’.
Sanskrit texts hold that
there was a stone temple
here as early as the seventh
century AD, and fragments
of this earlier structure do
seem to appear in the extant
building.
The deul (tower) of the
Lingaraj temple reaches
a height of just over 180
feet (55 meters). It is
completely curvilinear, and
Mukteswar
Temple
the extraordinary soaring tower
can be seen to incorporate
miniature replicas of itself, in
turrets inserted on the ribs
of the spire. In addition to
the deul and the Jagmohana
(porch), the Lingaraj temple
adds two other structures:
Natyamandira - hall of
dance, which is undoubtedly
associated with the prominent
devadasi system and
Bhogmandap - hall of offering.
By the time the Lingaraj
temple was constructed, the
Jagannath cult had become
predominant throughout
Orissa. This has reflected in
the fact that the temple deity
here, the Svayambhu linga,
is not, as in all other cases,
strictly a Shiva linga. It is
considered to be a ‘Hari-Hara’
linga, that is, half Lord Shiva
and half Lord Vishnu. There
are 150 subsidiary shrines
within the immense Lingaraj
temple complex.
Mukteswar Temple
The small and elegant
Mukteswar temple (AD 950)
is often referred to as the
“miniature gem of Orissan
architecture”. In addition to its
beauty, the Mukteswar temple
has importance as a transition
point between the early and
later phases of the Kalinga
School of temple architecture.
Many elements of the old with
new designs and conceptions
are successfully combined.
Many of the innovations took
root and became essential
features of all later temples.
Mukteswar temple is known
as the “harbinger of the new
culture”.
The relationship with older
structures can be immediately
seen in the small size of
the temple - 35 feet (11
meters) high at the pinnacle
of the tower. The latticed
windows of the ‘Jagmohana’
(porch) and the octagonal
compound wall seems to
have been patterned on an
earlier structure which now
exists only in fragmentary
form. Muktesvara temple’s
stunningly beautiful gateway
was strongly based on the
earlier architecture. The
‘Torana’ (arched gateway)
of the Mukteswar temple
deserves special attention.
It’s extraordinarily beautiful
sculpture includes elaborate
scrolls, graceful female
figures, monkeys, peacocks,
and a wealth of delicate and
lovely decorative detail.
The Jagmohana building here
has become a structure in
its own right, and is seen as
the later shape of a terraced
pyramid (although the internal
shape has not become a real
square). Over the doorway
to the inner sanctum, the
ninth planet of the Indian
astrology (Ketu, identified by
the canopied, three hooded
snake) can be seen.
On the eastern side of the
temple compound is a sacred
tank, and in the south west
corner is a well which is said
to cure fertility problems.
Several small shrines can be
seen within the compound,
many with lingam inside.
Parsurameswar
Temple
The Parsurameswar temple
(650 AD) is the earliest
temple, and is based on
style, as well as on the eight
planets which appear over
the door to the inner sanctum.
In later temples, there are
nine. This small temple
shows the early stages of
development of the two main
Orissan temple components:
the beehive-shaped tower
(generally referred to as the
deul) and the porch in front
of the tower (generally called
the Jagmohana). The tower
is built in successive, inwardtapering
stories, marked
by loti form corner pieces.
Light enters the interior
through skylights, doors, and
pierced latticed windows. The
rectangular niches running
around the base of the porch
contain images of diverse
deities. Although this was a
Siva temple, it is interesting
to note that images of Vishnu,
as well as the Vedic nature
deities of Indra, Surya and
Yama appear, in addition
to a group of seven mother
Goddesses. On the southern
wall is a fine image of
Karttikeya (one of the sons of
Siva) riding on a peacock, his
traditional mount.
Rajarani temple
The Rajarani temple, dating
back to the eleventh century,
is set in open paddy fields,
and the entire structure exudes
grace and elegance. The
name Rajarani is related to the
lovely red-and- gold sandstone
used in its construction, a
stone which is locally known
as Rajarania. The deul (tower),
is spectacularly ornate, and
is famous for the aesthetic
concept of miniature temple
spires clustered around the
main tower. The sculptural
images of the temple are
elegant and lively, especially
the beautiful female figures
which can be seen in amorous
dalliance, as well as engaged
in such activities as holding
children, looking in mirrors,
and playing with pet birds. On
the lower register of the deul,
on the corner projections, are
found the famous ‘Guardians
of the Eight Directions’,
watching over and radiating
the temple’s power to the eight
cardinal points. Beginning
from the left of the entrance
to the deul and proceeding
in a clockwise direction, they
are: Indra (east, chief of the
33 Vedic nature deities); Agni
(south-east, Vedic God of
fire); Yama (south, God of
death); Nirriti (south-west,
deity related to suffering);
Varuna (west, a Vedic deity of
the ocean); Vayu (north-west,
wind God); Kubera (north, lord
of wealth, shown here with a
wish-fulfilling tree); and Ishana
(north-east, a form of Shiva).
Vaital Temple
The Vaital Temple (AD 800)
represents the Khakhara order
(a subdivision of the Kalinga
School of architecture)
which was used for shrines
devoted to tantric cults.
The deul (tower) of the
temple has the most striking
difference. It is rectangular
in shape, positioned at a
right angle to the Jagmohana
(porch). A brief look at the
Vaital Temple will show an
extremely accomplished
style of sculptural decoration.
The temple was dedicated
to Tantric worship, which
combined elements from
certain sects of both
Buddhism and Hinduism,
centered on the worship
of Shakti, the female
life force. It developed
elaborate rituals involving
magic spells, secret rituals
and sacrificial offerings.
The interior of the Vaital
Temple’s inner sanctum is
almost completely dark, in
keeping with the esoteric
rites believed to have been
performed there. The temple
deity is of Chamundi (tantric
form of the Hindu goddess
Durga) is dimly visible
behind the grille, portrayed
with a garland of skulls
around her neck, seated on
a corpse, flanked by an owl
and a jackal. Her emaciated
body, sunken eyes, and
shrunken belly are quite
remarkable. On the outer,
eastern face of the tower
there is an extremely fine
image of the sun god, Surya,
with a sensitive and beautiful
face. He is flanked by Usha
and Pratyusha, twin sisters
was carved into cave like
carvings date back to the 2nd
artistic carvings are the Rani
Gumpha (Queen’s Cave) and
the Hathi Gumpha (Elephant
Cave) are of special attention.
The Hathi Gumpha has
carved chronicles of King
Kharavela’s reign of 1st - 2nd
century BC. Khandagiri, with
its 15 caves on the left and
Udayagiri on the right.
The rocks of the Khandagiri
and Udayagiri hills were
carved and tunneled, to
create this multi-storied
ancient apartment residence
for Jain monks. They
were the work of the first
known Orissan ruler, King
Kharavela, and probably
begun in the first century BC.
Kharavela was a king of the
Mahameghavahana dynasty,
who is known for expansion
of the Kalinga Empire and
his installation of public
improvements, such as canal
systems. His queen was
evidently quite a patron of the
arts, and probably had much
to do with the impressive
sculptural decoration of the
caves.
The 18 caves of Udayagiri
include the famous Hathi
Gumpha (‘Elephant Cave’)
with its famous inscription of
Kharavela from which we can
learn much about Kharavela’s
military exploits, gated towers
of his royal city, bathing and
drinking tanks, the scenes
of formally organized music
and dance performances,
as well as sporting and
social events. The famous
Rani Gumpha (‘Queen’s
Cave’), also on Udayagiri,
has upper and lower stories,
a spacious courtyard, and
elaborate sculptural friezes.
The carvings show popular
legends, historical scenes, and
religious functions, as well as
many dancers. The Ganesh
Gumpha, which is reached
by a walkway from the lower
storey of the Rani Gumpha,
is isolated, and perhaps for
this reason, better preserved.
Its two dwelling-spaces with
verandah in front are reached
by a short staircase from the
courtyard.
All of the caves are small,
and follow the natural
configurations of the ‘living
rock’. The sculpture throughout
exhibits a strong, lively folk
element, which has been
executed with a sure and
confident hand. The spaces
are filled with animal, human,
and divine personages and
decorative details, showing the
love of the Orissan artist for
richly elaborated scenes.
In Khandagiri there is a
magnificent Jain temple which
can be seen from Udayagiri.
transformed into Asoka,
the compassionate. Asoka
erected two main edicts in
Kalinga, one in Dhauli and
the other in Jayagarh. The
principles of Asoka which
reflects his compassion were
inscribed on all the other
edicts in his empire except
Kalinga. In the Kalinga edicts
he warned the people of
Kalinga not to revolt and that
he would take appropriate
action if they did. This is in
sharp contrast to all of his
other edicts and proof of
his political acumen. The
edicts are remarkably well
preserved, despite the fact
was renamed as Daya Nadhi.
Chousathi Yogini
Temple
On the outskirts of
Bhubaneswar, 15 km southeast
of the city at Hirapur
is a small, circular temple,
the Yogini Temple, dating to
the early ninth century. It is
hypaethral (open to the sky),
and belongs to a genre of
architecture completely apart
from the major Orissan school.
Although it seems that temples
of this type existed throughout
India at one time, today only
four remains. Two of them
are in Orissa; the shrine at
Hirapur, and one in the far
western reaches of the state,
at Ranipur-Jharial.
The temple’s circular wall,
which is barely 2 metre high,
contains 64 niches within
its inner circumference.
All except one of these
contain an image of a Yogini
Goddess. Some of the
Goddesses are portrayed
with sensual bodies and
jeweled bodices, others with
horrific shrunken features,
still others with animal
heads. Even today, standing
in the deserted temple with
bright sunshine pouring
in, one senses a strange
emanation from the temple,
and this feeling is in keeping
with its original purpose.
Active between the ninth
and thirteenth centuries, the
cults responsible for these
temples worshipped Yogini
Goddesses in expectation
of the direct acquisition
The Yoginis were thought
to be able to confer on
their devotees the power
to become microscopic or
gigantic in size, to control
the body and mind of oneself
and of others, to fly, become
Locally known as Mahamaya
Mandir, this hypaethral shrine
facing east was discovered
in 1953 by Kedarnath
Mahapatra of the Orissa
state Museum. The circular
shrine measures 27.4 metre
in circumference and 2.4
metre in height, have a frontal
projection resembling “Yoni”
(Vagina) female reproductive
organ. The inner parts of the
temple is made of locally
available coarse sandstone,
it harbours images of Yoginis.
The pillar like structure in
the middle of the temple
represents the Penis – male
reproductive organ. The
image of Ten-armed presiding
deity of the pitha is worshiped
as Mahamaya and is the
largest among the Yoginis.
Whereas in the centre exists
a lately restored Chandi
Mandap displaying 4 Saivite
figures and Yoginis, the
entirely delicately rendered
imagery notable for feminine
beauty is carved in chlorite
brought from elsewhere.
The projected niches on
the exterior of the edifice
are studded with icons of
Nava Katyayinis made of
sandstones. It is assignable to
circa ninth century AD.
Nandan Kanan means
‘”garden of pleasure”, and this
garden and sanctuary 20
km from Bhubaneswar, in
the splendid environs of the
Chandaka Forest, along the
rippling waters of the Kanjia
The zoo has created history
Tanjore and Trichi.
Kanchipuram thus became
their new abode. Though
classical writings talks
about Pallavas, there is no
particular mention of any
Pallava rulers’s name. But
the excavation carried out
by the Indian archeological
department reveals the
earliest possible reign dated
back to 1st and 2nd century
AD. The earliest known
coinage in lead is issued by
the then Pallavs, which could
be dated between 3rd and
4th century AD.
Around 4th century AD,
Pallavas defeated Ikshvakus
and occupied the land as far
as river Krishna. Allahabad
inscription throws the light
on a ruler Hastivarman
of Vengi’s defeat to
Samudragupta in the 4th
century. The copper plate of
mid 4th century, talked about
the Pallava grant in Andhra
by Siva Skandavarman.
During the 5th century, the
Pallavas expanded and
crossed the river Krishna
and occupied Bellary,
Sorth and South Arcot,
Trichirapalli, Chengalpet and
part of Tanjore. At the end of
500 AD, the territory came
into the possession of Simha
Vishnu and he became
the founder of the Pallava
dynasty. He fought several
wars and the empire enjoyed
prosperity. After his death,
his son Mahendravarman
succeded.
He was a learned man, he
started the work of cave
could be the reason why
Mahabalipuram is called
Mamallapuram. Badami
remained in his control
until 655 AD ill Vinayaditya
restored it back to the
Chalukya realm.
the riches of kanchi and
wanted to capture it. He
came with a huge army and
defeated Mahendravarman
at Pullalur in 620 A.D. It was
a great insult to the pallavas
and Mahendravarman in
particular. This ruined his
health. His further attempts
to take revenge in a series
of battles with Pulikes in the
northern part of Tamilnadu
were all futile. All went in
vain and he died a broken
man in 630 A.D.
Mahendravarman’s son
Narasimhavarman ascended
the throne in 630 A.D,
and vowed to revenge the
insult done to his father
by the Chalukyas. With
immense strength and tact
he defeated Pulikesi II in the
Battle of Manimangalam and
Pariyalam in the year 632
AD. He completely burnt the
capital city of Pulakesi. A
man with well built physique
was a great wrestler too.
He had a title “Mamalla” to
completed the cave temples
of Mahabalipuram and
constructed immense
number of temples. The
Pallava dynasty was not that
But the successors managed
the 9th century. The greatest
dynasty thus saw its end
once for all.
DINING ROOM
a healthy life
Dining Room has high significance in Vastu.
This is because a healthy life is based on
perfect dining.
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Tasty food will not provide
health. Proper food provides
health. If the healthy food is
consumed in an environment
which ignites positive energy,
the result will be good health.
So the positioning and design
of the dining room is very
important.
The dining room can also be made
in the East direction of the house,
as the morning sunrays are very
good for the health.
* The dining room should
be placed in West corner, as
the setting rays will kill all the
harmful bacteria present in
the stored food.
* The dining room can also
be made in the East direction
of the house, as the morning
sunrays are very good for the
health.
* The dining table should be
perfect square / rectangle.
* Dining table should not be
sticking to the wall.
* Fridge in the dining room,
should be in southeast
direction.
* While eating the members
should face the east, north.
* The wash basin should be
in Northeast side of the room.
* The main door of the house
and of the Dining Room
should not face each other.
* The dining room should not
be adjacent to toilet.
* The door of Pooja room /
toilet should not be open in
front of dining area.
* If console has to be placed
near dining for storage of
crockery and utensils, it
should be on South / West
wall of that area.
You have to take into
consideration the following
points on Dining Room, when
you plan to construct a house.
* Proper location and
orientation of the dining room
in the house
* Direction of the Entrance
* Direction and placement of
the windows
* Direction and placement
of the dining table
* Direction and placement
of the console
* Direction to face while
having food
* Direction and placement
of the water (aquarium,
fountain)
8. Direction and placement
of the TV, audio systems and
other electronic items
* Direction and placement
of the heavy antique items
10. Direction and placement
of wall clocks
* Colour scheme of the room
After all, a healthy
environment only can ensure
a healthy living. Perfect vastu
of dining room can eliminate
many different illness and
diseases.
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Lord Krishna states that it is
better to follow one’s own duties
according to station and rank
in life, as enjoined by the Vedic
scriptures.
Verse meaning
It is far better to discharge
one’s prescribed duties, even
though they may be faulty, than
another’s duties. Destruction
in the course of performing
one’s own duty is better than
engaging in another’s duties,
for to follow another’s path is
dangerous.
Explanation
One should discharge his
prescribed duties in full
consciousness, rather than
those prescribed for others.
Prescribed duties complement
one’s psychophysical
condition, under the spell of the
modes of material nature. Both
materially or spiritually, one
should stick to his prescribed
duties even up to death,
rather than imitate another’s
prescribed duties.
Duties on the spiritual platform
and duties on the material
platform may be different, but
the principle of following the
authorized direction is always
good for the performer. When
one is under the spell of the
modes of material nature, one
should follow the prescribed
rules for particular situations
and should not imitate others.
One should engage
themselves in their duties
overriding one’s normal
inclinations which are even
seen to be in the natures of
animals. Engage in ones own
duty, that one possesses in
the correct inner mentality
to accomplish it, but for
engagment in other’s duty in
the correct inner mentality
would not be present, even
if the external action was
performed perfectly.
Lord Krishna states that it
is better to follow one’s own
duties according to station and
rank in life, as enjoined by the
Vedic scriptures. Performing
other’s duty is not authorised
in the Vedic scriptures and
is being prohibited and is
fraught with danger. One who
exempts themselves from their
prescribed actions as enjoined
in the Vedic scriptures, is
never qualified to perform the
prescribed actions of a higher
station. Such actions are
prohibited.
Vishu
WWW.WISHESH.COM | MAY 2016

Vishu is celebrated with much fanfare and vigour
in all parts of Kerala, especially by Hindus. It is
considered as a festival of light and fireworks. Other
elements of Vishu include wearing new clothes for
the occasion, the tradition of giving money called
Vishukkaineetam and the Vishu feast or Sadya.
Vishu marks the beginning of
Meda Rashi, the first zodiac sign. It
signifies the equinox according to
the solar calendar and falls usually in
the second week of April according
to the English calendar. Mesha
Sankranthi is celebrated as Vishu in
Kerala.
Vishu is celebrated with much
fanfare and vigour in all parts of
Kerala, especially by Hindus. It is
fireworks. Other elements of Vishu
include wearing new clothes for
the occasion, the tradition of giving
money called Vishukkaineetam and
the Vishu feast or Sadya.
The most important event in Vishu
is the Vishukkani, which literally
means “the first thing seen on the
day of Vishu after waking up”.
The Vishukkani consists of a ritual
arrangement of auspicious articles
intended to signify prosperity, which
includes rice, fruits and vegetables,
betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror,
yellow flowers called konna (Cassia
fistula), holy texts and coins, all
arranged around lord Krishna in
an ambience lit by nilavilakku or
tookkuvilakku (traditional oil lamps)
usually in the prayer room of the
house.
The Sadhya (feast) is a major part of
all Kerala festivals. However, Vishu
Kanji, Thoran and Vishu katta are
more important during the festival
of Vishu. The Kanji is made of rice,
coconut milk and spices. Vishu katta
is a delicacy prepared from freshly
harvested rice powder and coconut
milk served with jaggery. For Thoran,
the side dish, there are mandatory
ingredients. Other important Vishu
delicacies include Veppampoorasam
(a bitter preparation of neem) and
Mampazhappulissery (a sour mango
soup).
Sardaar Gabbar Singh, released as
the most anticipated movie of the
year and was opened to negative
reviews all over, right after the benefit
shows conducted on the release day.
Though most of the scenes are found
entertaining, the non-sinking scenes
and lack of connectivity between scene
to scene, is what spoiled the flow of
Sardaar Gabbar Singh.
The weak screenplay can be felt right
from the start of the film and that made
it face the bad fortune. Adding to the
fate, the makers even announced Raja
Sardaar Gabbar Singh as the third part
of Gabbar Singh series. That is highly
criticized by the insiders and reportedly
stopped Pawan from holding the pen
again.
Analysis :
The first half of the movie is
completely engaging and loaded
with sensible entertainment
throughout. The director managed
to indulge lot of sense of humor in
the fresh plot. The performances by
Arjun and Kareena take the film to
the next level. The music has been
melodious and the songs have
been marked at the right places.
The interval episodes have been
decent and the complete first half
has been fresh in narration.
The second half of the movie
will leave the audience in deep
shock after such an interesting
first half. The dose of drama has
been beyond the limits and many
unwanted episodes have been
dragged much. The complete
efforts of the first half look vanished
after watching the second half
which makes the film fall flat. The
climax has been decent but it alone
could not save the film.
Final Word:
half but the completely disturbing
second half makes the film fall flat.
Sardaar
Gabbar
Singh falls far
behind the
expectations
and ends up
as a huge
disappointment
all over.
Story :
Sardaar Gabbar Singh is about
Rathanpur who happened to
be the common point of three
neighbouring states. However it
has been dominated by a batch
of mafia goons lead by Bhairav
Singh (Sharad Kelkar) who has
been into mining mafia. It is during
this time, Sardaar Gabbar Singh
(Pawan Kalyan) gets transferred
to Rathanpur and he slowly makes
his impact with his power packed
style keeping an end to the acts of
mafia. Sardaar Gabbar Singh falls
in love with Arshi (Kajal Agarwal)
who happens to be the princess
of Rathanpur kingdom. The rest of
the movie is how Sardaar Gabbar
Singh saves the common people
from the mafia goons and wins his
love with Arshi. Watch Sardaar
Gabbar Singh to know about the
complete story.
Analysis :
The first half of Sardaar Gabbar
Singh has nothing new and
interesting episodes throughout.
The entertainment has been
completely outdated. The songs
lost pace and they failed to impress
the audience completely. The
action episodes lacked power
and they looked completely fake.
The interval episodes have been
dragged much with over dose of
action.
After a below average first half, the
audience face tough time during
the second half of the film. The
second half dips down even more
and Sardaar Gabbar Singh fails in
all the available ways during the
second half of the film. The songs
failed to impress the audience with
the visuals and the entertainment
looks copied.
Final Word:
over.
Sarrainodu
Analysis :
112
Story :
Sarainodu
is the right
commercial film
to be watched
this summer if
you ignore the
dose of action
episodes.
Sarainodu is the story of Gana
(Allu Arjun) who fights against
the system in the society. He
makes his presence wherever
he is needed and gets back from
Army to serve the society. He
falls in love with Hanshita Reddy
(Catherine Tresa) who is a local
MLA and upon impressing her,
she asks him to leave violence
after which an unknown incident
changes his life. The rest of the
film is about his relation with Janu
(Rakul Preet Singh) and his rivalry
with Dhanush (Aadi Pinisetty).
Watch Sarainodu to know about
the complete story.
The first half of Sarainodu has right
mixture of emotions, entertainment
and action balanced well with
suspense elements throughout.
The songs have been decent and
placed well. Allu Arjun is the major
boost up of the movie throughout
and he has been extremely
outstanding in the action episodes.
The pre-interval episodes bring lot
of interest and the interval episode
has been shot well. On the whole
the complete first half has been
completely impressive.
The second half of Sarainodu too
carries the same pace initially
however the film lacks interest
when it heads forward. The dose
of action becomes high and the
film becomes predictable at parts.
The climax of the movie makes a
huge impact on the movie and the
complete second half has been
decent.
Final Word:
Sarainodu is the right commercial
film to be watched this summer
if you ignore the dose of action
episodes. Allu Arjun performs to
the peaks which make the movie a
decent action entertainer.
