Himachal becomes India's second
‘Open Defecation Free state
Himachal Pradesh is declared ‘Open Defecation
Free’ (ODF), the country’s second state, after Sikkim
to get this status under Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ to have toilet for
every individual household. Among bigger states,
however, Himachal Pradesh will be the first state to
become ODF. All 12 districts of the state have been
covered as ODF districts.
While making this announcement jointly with Chief
Minister Virbhadra Singh and Union Minister for
Health J P Nadda, Minister for Rural Development
Narendra Singh Tomar said that it is heartening to
note how the state has achieved the ODF target, at
least five months in advance by taking up the task for
construction of toilets in a campaign mode.
Indian Army warns of ‘appropriate
response’
The Army has warned of an “appropriate response”
after a soldier was killed and his body mutilated by
terrorists in an encounter in the Machhil sector of
Kupwara district, near the Line of Control (LoC), in
Jammu and Kashmir.
“In a despicable act, the terrorists mutilated the
body of the Indian Army soldier before fleeing
into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), supported
by covering fire from Pakistan Army posts,” said
a statement released by the Army’s Northern
Command, headquartered in Udhampur.
Govt to buy 200 foreign fighter jets if
Made in India
India offers to buy hundreds of fighter planes from
the foreign manufacturers - as long as the jets are
made in India and with a local partner, Indian Air
Force(IAF) officials said. A deal for 200 singleengine
planes produced in India - which the Air
Force said, could rise to 300 as it fully phases out
ageing Soviet-era aircraft, which could be worth
anything from $13-$15 billion, potentially one of the
country’s biggest military aircraft deals.
RSS opposes Tipu Jayanti
RSS has opposed the celebration of ‘Tipu Jayanti’ in
Karnataka, saying they would stage protests against
it as the ruler of the erstwhile Mysore kingdom was a
“religious bigot and a violent sultan”.
“Our outfits will be out on the streets to stage protests
against Tipu Jayanti as the then Mysuru ruler was
a tyrant, a religious bigot and a violent sultan,” RSS
kshetriya sarsanghchalak of Karnataka, Telangana
and Andhra Pradesh, V Nagaraj said.
Nagaraj added that, celebrating Tipu Jayanti will
amount to “rubbing salt into the wounds” of Christians
and many other communities who were persecuted by
the then Mysuru ruler.

China cannot decide where Dalai
After Beijing warned New Delhi of dire
consequences for inviting the Dalai Lama to
Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress party said it is not
for China to decide where the Tibetan spiritual leader
can and will go, as he is a much respected guest of
India. “Arunachal is an integral part of the Republic
INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART
Doddaballapur
Indian Manchester
of Textiles
14
Doddaballapur is Taluk Head Quarters of
Bangalore Rural District. It is located to the
north east of Bangalore city at a distance of 40
Kms. The city is on the state Highway Bangalore
– Hindupur Road.
History
Dodda means big in the native
Kannada; contrasted with
Chikkaballapura or the ‘little
Ballapura’. The place is found
mentioned as Ballalapura thanya
in a record dated 1598 AD from
the local Adinarayana temple. It
might have originated from Hoysala
name Ballala, and later corrupted
as Ballapura. It is also believed that
the village has derived its name
from the circumstance that a cow
used to drop one `balla’ of milk
over a certain anthill and this omen
led to the foundation of the town.
From `balla’ the name Ballapura
was thus derived.
Doddaballapur was a celebrated
commercial centre right from the
Hoysala period. There is also a
view that the town was founded
by a feudatory Malbhairegowda of
the Avathi clan. During the period
between the 16th - 17th
centuries, Dodballapur was
administered by a branch
of the Avathi clan. Towards
1637 - 38, the place was
occupied by the Bijapur
Commander Ranadaula
Khan. In 1689, it was taken
by the Mughals, when the
place was in the hands of
Sambhaji, son of Shivaji, the
latter having taken it from
his brother Ekoji. Persian
encryptions dated 1691
A.D. of the Mughal Emperor
Aurangzeb says that in the
34th year of the reign of
Aurangzeb (1689), the fort
of Ballapura - kariyat was in
the hands of Sambhaji, son
of Shivaji and it came into the
possession of the supreme
Government and that in the
34th year of the reign, it
was granted to one Shekh
Abdullah from Delhi.
The place was presented as
a Jahgir to a Muslim chief Ali
Khuli Khan. After his death,
his son Darga Khuli Khan,
the Nawab of Sira, received
the town for a temporary
period of one year as
Jahgir. Later, for a span
of fifty years, the place
was under the Nawab
of Sira when the Nizam
of Hyderabad took over
administration. In 1761,
Haider Ali annexed the
region and subsequently
it was passed on to the
Wodeyars of Mysore.
Doddaballapur was a centre
of freedom movement
with T.Siddalingayya, the
first president of Mysore
Congress hailing from here.
Temples
The town has important
temples such as
Venkataraman,
Chowdeshwari, Ishawar,
Someshwar, Janardan,
Kashi Vishveshwar,
Nagareshwar
and Arkavati. The
Venkataraman temple
has a big compound.
The compound has stucco
decorations with impact of
Muslim architecture. In front
of the square Garbhagriham
is an oblong Navarang
having two cells with images
of Padmavati in the left one
and Vinayaka in the right
one. Facing the Navaranga
Over the Hara of the
small mortar niches having
impressive stucco figures
depicting the Bhagavatha
episodes. The temple has a
spacious inner Prakaram with
an outer Pradakshinapatham.
At the entrance of the temple
is Rajagopuram in recent
style. There is a Shikara
over the Garbhagriha built
in Vijayanagar style. The
temple is believed to have
been constructed towards
the end of 18th century by
a local officer under Haider
called Arunachala Panth.
Inside the temple, over a
platform is kept a stone
image of Lakshminarayan in
Vijayanagar style, measuring
about one and a half metre
in height, said to have
been brought from the local
Adinarayan temple.
Handloom
Industry
The city is popularly called as
Silk City as lot of textile and
small scale Silk industries
are there in the city. This
town was once known for
its famous hand woven silk.
Doddaballapur was once
known as Indian Manchester
of textiles. Previously
Doddaballapur was known
for its handloom products but
now there is not even one
handloom. All the handlooms
are being converted to
power looms. Perhaps from
the earlier times, the place
is noted for silk weaving
industry and many weavers
also migrated to Bangalore
from here.
In Doddaballapur there is a
place called weavers colony
which is once known for its
handloom products. These
sarees are weaved in Cotton,
silk and polyester. Due to
the heavy cost incurring in
handloom weaving and the
non availability of weavers,
once famous handlooms
have shifted to power looms.
New generation is not
interested in the traditional
weaving due to low wages.
Process of weaving
Doddaballapur textile
products are well known
for the durability of the
colours used in the yarn. The
mixture of colour gives the
durability. The count used in
weaving gives the softness
and hardness of the fabric.
Count means the number of
threads used in the length
and breadth for weaving
known as warp and weft
respectively.
Dyeing
The process of
manufacturing a
Doddaballapur Saree starts
with dyeing the yarn. Dyeing
is the coloring process of
the yarn by dipping the yarn
in the boiled color water in
very high temperature, higher
the temperature durability of
colour is also higher. Dyeing
of the yarn is done making
sure that the color is spread
uniformly throughout the
yarn and it doesn’t affect
the quality of the yarn. The
coloring process is a very
crucial step in getting a
good colourful saree. The
colours are applied as per
the specifications of the
designers and also some
times as per the orders
from customers who orders
for a designer Saree. After
coloring, the yarn is dried in
shade. Drying yarn in sun
can be harmful to yarn. It is
also rolled over small sticks
to use for weft.
Weaving
After dyeing and drying the
yarn it is converted to thread
and is loaded as warp and
then it is loaded into the
loom for actual weaving.
From one warp 50 sarees
are made. It will take 20 to
30 days to complete weaving
of one warp. Doddaballapur
handloom sarees are
woven in the interlockedweft
technique. The design
required on the saree is
initially drawn in a computer
and then this is punched into
a card and then these cards
are loaded in Jacard in the
loom. The needles in the
Jacard will control the weft
and produce designs.
Extinction of
Handlooms in
Doddaballapur
Once famous Doddaballapur
Handloom products are now
extinct due to the low wages
prevailed in the industry.
Previously Doddaballapur
was full of talented weavers
who used to do magic in the
looms to produce the best
handloom products. Now
you cannot see even one
handloom in the vicinity of
Doddaballapur.
INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION
KANJAR
Nomadic tribe of Rajasthan
Kanjar is a traditionally nomadic
ethnic group found in North India
and Pakistan. The community is also
known by the names of Nath, Marwari
Kumar, and Banchra.
T
The word kanjar has been
derived from the Sanskrit
word kanana-chara, which
means wanderer in the
jungle. They claim to have
originated in Rajasthan. The
Kanjar, then had to flee to
the jungles to avoid Mughal
persecution.
The Kanjar community
council is very strong and
exercises a strong hold over
the community. This caste
council resolves disputes
within the community and
is headed by a mukhiya or
chieftain, who is seen as the
leader of the Kanjar.
20
According to their traditions,
they are descended from
a Manu Guru and his wife
Nathiya Kanjarin. They are
divided into four clans, the
Callad, Superala, Diyal and
Rachhband. A fifth group,
the Patharkat are now
a distinct sub-group, no
longer inter-marrying with
the other Kanjar groupings
The Kanjar of India are
Hindu and Sikh and their
community deity is Mana,
which is worshiped by all
the Kanjars. The Kanjar
could speak 4-5 languages
along with their secret
language called Narsi-
Parsi. It consists of different
sounds of animals & birds,
coded words and signs.
The traditional occupation
of the Kanjar was hunting,
but over time, many took
to agriculture. They still
depend on the forest,
extracting roots of the khas
grass and collecting reeds
from banks of the rivers.
From the stalks of the munji
grass and from the roots of
the palas tree, they make
ropes which they sell in
villages. The community is
also involved in tanning of
skins out of which drums
are made and sold.
24
Navratri, culminating with Dussehra, is a Hindu cultural festival
of great importance and significance for all. It is a festival
that is all about the goddess. In Karnataka, Dussehra is about
Chamundi, in Bengal it is about Durga. Like this, it is about
various goddesses in different places, but essentially it is about
the feminine goddess or the feminine divinity.
COVER STORY
Vijayadashami or Dussehra
festival is of a tremendous
cultural significance for all
and should be celebrated with
gaiety and love.
““
26
Navratri is replete with
symbolism about vanquishing
evil and wanton nature, and
about having reverence for
all aspects of life and even
for the things and objects that
contribute to our wellbeing.
The nine days of Navratri are
classified as per the three
basic qualities of tamas,
rajas and sattva. The first
three days are tamas, where
the goddess is fierce, like
Durga and Kali. The next
three days are Lakshmi
related – gentle but materially
oriented goddesses. The last
three days are dedicated to
Saraswati, which is sattva. It
is related to knowledge and
enlightenment.
After Navratri, the tenth and
final day Vijayadashami –
means you have conquered
all these three qualities. You
did not give into any of them,
you saw through every one
of them. You participated in
every one of them, but you
did not invest in any one of
them. You won over them.
That is Vijayadashami, the
day of victory. This brings
home the message of how
being in reverence and
gratitude towards everything
that matters in our lives leads
to success and victory.
Dasara marks the festivity of
all age groups to celebrate.
From children to elders,
all will participate in the
Dussehra celebrations. There
are two important stories
behind Vijaya Dashami
celebrations. One story is
associated with Lord Ram,
and another is associated
with Goddess Durga. The
festival of Dashain signifies
the victory of good over evil.
Dussehra was always full
of dances, where the whole
community mixed, met and
mingled.
STORY FOR KIDS
28
Once Nanda the leader of the Yadavas called a
meeting of all the Yadavas. It was to discuss the safety
of Krishna. Nanda and other elders were very much
alarmed by the extraordinary happenings in their
Gokula at Brihadvana.
Gokul to
Vrindhavana
The frequent visits of the
demons and their mysterious
death caused them great
concern. After a prolonged
discussion the eldest among
them, Upananda, gave a
suggestion.
“My dear friends, day by day
calamities are increasing
in our place. It is only
by the grace of God that
Krishna has been saved
again and again from so
many dangerous incidents.
There is no guarantee that
the dangers are over. So
it is better that we migrate
to some other place. I
understand that there is
a beautiful place called
Vrindavan at the foot of
the hill Govardhana. The
forest lands surrounding the
mountain are abundant in
grass.”
Getting this advice from
Upananda, who was
respected by the whole
community, Nanda and the
other Gopas welcomed the
suggestion. They all decided
to move to Vrindavan
the next day with all their
wagons and cattle wealth.
They sorted out their
belongings and loaded them
in carts. All the old men and
women sat in the carts. The
young men walked guarding
these carts. All the children
and ladies also were seated
in carts.
Rohini, Yasoda, Krishna
and Rama got into one cart.
STORY FOR KIDS
30
Men blew trumpets and
other instruments. All were
wearing new clothes. The
party looked as if they were
on their way to attend a
festival. After a long journey
they reached Vrindavan.
Rama and Krishna were
delighted to see the beautiful
scenes of Vrindavan, the
Govardhana mountain
and the sand dunes on the
Yamuna banks. By their
boyish pranks they continued
to delight the Gopis and
Gopas.
When the two boys had
grown a little older, they
were entrusted with the
grazing of the calves and
later of the cows. They
welcomed the assignment,
since now they could move
about in the outskirts with the
other boys. In the company
of other cowherd boys they
took the small calves out.
They carried with them
numerous playthings also.
Vrindavan was full of
peacocks. Krishna would
play on his flute and it was
a sight to see the peacocks
dancing to his music.
Krishna and Balarama too
would dance. The dance and
the tinkling of the anklet bells
would delight the hearts of
their playmates. Sometimes
they would cover themselves
with blankets and imitate
cows and bulls fighting
with one another. They
would mimic the cries of the
animals. Thus they played
about like ordinary boys
delighting everyone.
HEALTHY LIVING
Balancing is the first norm of
healthy living and discipline
suffices the right choice of
maintaining it.
We are already familiar on
the basics of acquiring an
excellent to great health, it
is still a matter of choice. It
is not just on what we eat or
do, but still an option to stick
to the cycle of maintaining a
health equilibrium.
32
Consider the old ways of life,
people lived in the past had
longevity. The simplicity of
their lifestyles made it easy
to gain satisfaction, which
tracked contentment and
eventually drawn happiness,
which is another implication
of being healthy.
Living a life
in a better way
Healthy living connotes a lifestyle that
can envelope the norms of having an “ideal
health”. Even if your preference would be
on anything that mother nature yields, it
doesn’t mean you are ideally healthy.
It doesn’t mean that we won’t
enjoy life anymore if we do
not commit ourselves to
healthy living. It’s watching
what we eat and drink,
making sure that a balanced
diet would suit the energy
consumption for the day.
Stress management and
sleeping well can also
contribute to an inner wellbeing.
Getting into physical
activities, equates our
normal body functions
that are crucial to prevent
common illnesses such
as obesity and high blood
pressure. If we feel great,
we tend to connect with
others also well. We can
better cope with difficulties
which are explicit strains on
our mental and emotional
quotient.
Healthy living is also about
awareness. We have the
responsibility to know
what causes ailments or
any disorder that may
compromise our well-being
and should be taking actions
to prevent it.
Seeking professional help or
subscribing to blogs from a
health guru are great ways
to keep us well-informed
about the right choice of
health program or products.
Health commodities are
iconic to nature’s produce.
It is manufactured to blend
with the lifestyle of the new
generation, which is fast
or always on the run. It
takes away the hassles of
the old way of preparation,
but making sure that it still
comprises a healthy content,
which means it’s syntheticfree.
Everyone agrees about
the importance of healthy
living and even if there is an
overflowing information on
how to go about it, it will only
become beneficial by having
the right attitude towards it.
Indian
NRI IMMIGRATION
students
The number of Indian
students applying to study
in the UK has dropped by
almost around 45,000 over
the past two to three years,
according to UK universities
and recruitment agencies.
Experts have pinned the
UK government’s decision
to scrap the post-study
work visa back in 2012
as one of the catalysts
behind the decline. A push
for immigration reforms,
including a reduction in net
migration figures, have led to
an atmosphere where foreign
students feel unwelcome.
Prime Minister Theresa May,
who rose to the position
following the Brexit vote,
considers international
students as immigrants.
Prior to the implementation
of stricter visa policies,
Indian students wished to
study in the UK in order to
find work to help pay off the
student debt accrued to study
overseas. Since the poststudy
visa was given the axe,
foreign students have only
four months to secure a job
earning an annual income of
at least £20,800.
“Those with limited means are
no longer applying because
of strict visa policies. Once a
course is over, students want
to work in the UK to be able
to pay off education loans
and that isn’t happening now.
Brexit is also a factor in this
decline,” Naveen Chopra,
co-founder of The Chopras,
a New Delhi-based study
abroad consultant agency
said.
“Decline in work
opportunities, along with
an uncertain economy and
stricter immigration policies,
will make the UK less
attractive for many Indian
students,” Rahul Choudaha,
CEO of DrEducation, a USbased
global higher education
research firm said.
“After Brexit, UK universities
and other funding agencies,
such as the British Council,
are likely to get aggressive in
terms of offering scholarships,
full or partial, to attract Indian
students. The number of UK
varsities coming to India to
woo students has gone up.
Their education policy will
focus on welcoming students
from all over and will have
to think out-of-the-box to get
in more Indian students,”
Sanjeev Roy, a higher
education expert said.
Admission Decline Post
brexit in UK
India is one of the world’s leading source countries for
the international students, second only to China. UK has
traditionally been one of the most popular study destinations
for Indian students, this trend has seen a downturn over the
past few years.
I
It said “credible reports”
suggest that IS has been
“ISIL’s depraved, cowardly
strategy is to attempt to
tens of thousands of women,
men and children as human
Geneva.
US Air Force Brig Gen
Matthew C Isler said the
US-led coalition conducted
“precision strikes” on vehicles
that were unoccupied and
far away from civilians. “We
were able to do that without
harming any civilians and
we verified we were able to
degrade their planned use
of those vehicles,” he said.
He added that the forced
“atrocities.”
ISIS has abducted 8,000
Pakistani terrorists
attacks Uri Army posts
Four Pakistani terrorists, have killed 19 soldiers in one of the the
bloodiest attacks on an army camp in Uri on 18 September 2016, in
the state of Jammu and Kashmir. They had used a ladder to scale the
electrified fence at the LoC.
42
Investigation carried out
by the army identified the
infiltration route of the
four terrorists has led it
to conclude that a ladder
was used near Salamabad
nallah, official sources said.
“A group of heavily armed
terrorists targeted the rear
administrative base of a
unit at Uri, Kashmir. In the
counter action, four terrorists
were eliminated and
combing operations are in
progress,” the Army said in a
statement.
“The administrative base
had large strength of troops
of units turning over after
their tour of duty who
were stationed in tents/
temporary shelters which
caught fire, and resulted in
heavy casualties. We salute
the sacrifice of 17 soldiers
who were martyred in the
operation.”
Pakistani terrorist group
Jaish-e-Mohammed
is suspected of being
involved in the planning and
execution of the attack.
At around 5:30 a.m. on 18
September, four militants
attacked an Indian Army
brigade headquarters in Uri,
near the Line of Control in
a pre-dawn ambush. They
were said to have lobbed 17
grenades in three minutes.
As a rear administrative
base camp with tents caught
fire, 17 army personnel were
killed. A gun battle ensued
lasting six hours, during
which all the four militants
were killed. An additional
19-30 soldiers were reported
to have been injured in the
attack.
Combing operations
continued to flush out
additional terrorists thought
to be alive. Most of the
soldiers killed were from
the 10 Dogra and 6 Bihar
regiments. One of the
injured soldiers succumbed
to his injuries on 19
September at R&R Hospital
in New Delhi, followed
by another soldier on 24
September, bringing the
death toll to 19.
The casualties were
primarily believed to have
occurred as a result of nonfire
retardant transition tents.
This was the time of a troops
shift, whereby the 6 Bihar
regiment was replacing
the 10 Dogra regiment.
The incoming troops were
housed in tents, which are
normally avoided in sensitive
areas around LOC like Uri.
The attackers sneaked into
the camp breaching heavy
security and seemed to
know exactly where to strike.
Seven of the personnel
killed were support staff,
including cooks and barbers.
“
The Director General of military operations, Lieutenant-General
Ranbir Singh, said that there was evidence that the attackers belonged to
Jaish-e-Mohammad. He established a hotline contact with his Pakistani
counterpart and conveyed India serious concern on the issue. Lieutenant
General Ranbir Singh has also stated that the militants used incendiary
ammunition to set fire to the tents.
M. Govind Rao, member
Commission asserts.
44
GST council
suggest 4 tax slabs
and
cess for luxury items
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council’s two-day meeting
that ended on Wednesday, but did not finally arrive at an
agreement on the GST rates. The finance ministry had
proposed a four-slab structure (6-12-18-26 percent) and there
is near-unanimity on this.
The proposed 4-tier
GST structure may hit
the common man as it
is likely to result in the
higher taxes on various
items including the kitchen
staples such as edible oils,
spices and chicken. The
prices of certain consumer
durables like televisions,
air conditioners, fridges
and washing machines
may become cheaper with
decrease in taxes.
The lowest rate proposed is
6 percent, with two standard
rates of 12 and 18 percent.
The peak rate, which will
mostly apply to FMCG and
consumer durables, will be
26 percent. A cess is also
likely to be levied on demerit
or sin goods and polluting
items.
Salt, bread, fresh fruit and
vegetables, eggs, milk,
curd, blood, prasad, the
national flag, kumkum,
bindi-sindoor, glass bangles,
even contraceptives, all will
continue to enjoy a taxfree
run under the proposed
goods and services tax
(GST) regime.
“The exemption list is to be
pruned,” said a government
official outlining the broad
principle that will be followed
in deciding what doesn’t get
taxed under GST. But “those
items that are exempted
under value added tax will
likely remain out of the tax
net.” “The list of exempted
items cannot be very long
but those that are considered
of common essential use
would be kept out,” the
official said.
Under the proposed 4-slab
structure, the items which
are currently taxed between
3-9 percent will fall in the
6 percent bracket; those in
9-15 percent range will come
under 12 percent rate. Those
products which are currently
taxed between 15-21 percent
would attract 18 percent
levy, while those above 21
percent would be taxed at
the peak rate of 26 percent.
GST seeks to replace
multiple central and state
taxes on goods and services
such as excise duty, service
tax, value added tax, entry
tax, purchase tax with one
levy and create a seamless
national market.
Shyamji Krishna varma or Shyamji Krishna
Nakhua was an Indian revolutionary fighter,
lawyer and journalist who had founded the
Indian Home Rule Society, India House and The
Indian Sociologist in London.
Shyamaji Krishna Varma was born
on 4 October 1857 in Mandvi,
Kutch province as Shamji, the son
of Karsan Bhanushali (Karsan
Nakhua; Nakhua is the surname
while Bhanushali is the community
name), a labourer for cotton press
company, and Gomatibai, who
died when Shyamaji was only 11
years old. He was raised by his
grandmother.
His ancestors belongs to
Bhachunda, a village of Abdhasa
taluka of Kutch district. They
migrated to Mandvi in search
of employment and because of
family disputes. After completing
secondary education in Bhuj
he went to Mumbai for further
education at Wilson High School.
While in Mumbai, he learnt
Sanskrit.
In 1875 Shyamaji got married
to Bhanumati, a daughter of a
wealthy businessman of the
Bhatia community. Then he got in
touch with the nationalist Swami
Dayananda Saraswati, a radical
reformer and an exponent of
Vedas, who had founded Arya
Samaj. He became his disciple
Garbhasana
THE FOETUS POSE
54
Garbhasana or the Foetus Pose resembles a foetus in the
womb in the final position. Garbhasana brings one back to the
original state of mind when we were in the mother’s womb.
Our subconscious mind still holds memories of the time that
we spend in the mother’s womb. In the mother’s womb we
were relatively free of worries and the mind is calm. When we
assume the Garbhasana pose, the mind goes back to those seed
memories and it calms down our nerves.
LIFE STYLE
In this busy, work-obsessed culture, people frequently forget
to show the necessary tender loving care to their minds and
bodies. Grabbing food that’s easy instead of healthy is a frequent
symptom of life-on-the-go. Everyone can afford to spend a little
more energy in maintaining their overall wellness.
Below are some tips to
feel better and live better.
fiber and promote energy and weight
loss. Soaking them facilitates easy
digestion.
56
Feel Better
Juicing extracts the water and nutrients
from vegetables, leaving behind the
fibers. This way, your body can best
absorb the nutrients without having to
digest the dense ingredients.
Sweating helps the body get rid itself of
unwanted materials and aids circulation.
In medieval times, healers relied on
saunas to cure illnesses and priests
channeled the heat to chase away evil
spirits.
Water accelerates movement through
our system; cleansing out waste and
toxins, plumping up cell count, and
clearing skin.
Learn to trust your cravings, rather than
attributing them to weaknesses. With
a craving, your body typically sends
signals to your brain for nutrients it
needs.
Each person has unique lifestyle and
dietary needs. It’s not because carbs
are “bad” or your body isn’t as healthy;
people just metabolize foods differently.
Knowing the foods that are ideal for
your metabolism will help you embrace
feel-good ingredients.
By preparing your own meals, you’ll eat
for satiety and be less likely to overeat
due to heaping portions. Home cooking
will keep you from consuming excess
salt or flavoring condiments, as you
would at a restaurant.
Sleep regenerates your body and
stabilizes energy and appetite for the
next day. People who are more wellrested
lose weight at a higher metabolic
rate than the perpetually sleepdeprived.
When you’re sleepy, the
same hormones drive appetite.
Live Better
An effective way to cut out unhealthy
foods from your diet is the crowding out
principle that suggests you to add more
to your diet rather than taking foods
away. Increase your intake of nutritious
foods and your body will have less room
to process nutrient-deficient foods.
When your body efficiently detoxifies
and rids toxins, energy will burn
calories.
Hope these simple tips can help you
feel better and live better. Having a
healthy body is what makes you live
happier.
RELATIONSHIP
Having a perfect
relationship is
actually luck
58
Communication is a key part to building
a perfect relationship. The first step is
making sure both of you want and expect
the same things and being on the same
page is very important.
Creating boundaries is a good
way to keep your relationship
healthy and secure. By
setting boundaries together,
you can both have a deeper
understanding of the type of
relationship that you and your
partner want.
In a healthy relationship, if
something is bothering you,
it’s best to talk about it instead
of holding it in. Your partner’s
wishes and feelings have
value. Let your significant other
know that you are making
an effort to keep their ideas
in mind. Mutual respect is
essential in maintaining healthy
relationships.
Disagreements are a natural
part of healthy relationships, but
it’s important that you find a way
to compromise, if you disagree
on something. Try to solve
conflicts in a fair and rational
way. Offer reassurance
and encouragement to
your partner. Let your
partner know when you
need their support. Healthy
relationships are about
building each other up, not
putting each other down.
Just because you’re in
a relationship, doesn’t
mean you have to share
everything and constantly
be together. Healthy
relationships require space.
Every healthy relationships
can use a boost now and
then. You may need a boost
if you feel disconnected
from your partner or like
the relationship has gotten
stale. If so, find a fun, simple
activity you both enjoy, like
going on a walk and talk about
the reasons why you want to
be in the relationship.
Healthy relationships are
based upon each person
having a relationship
with him-or-herself. The
relationship with the self is
the basic building block of a
relationship. If one does not
have a relationship with the
self, it is truly impossible to
have a healthy relationship;
it will not be possible to be
honest with the “other” if one
is not in contact with oneself.
This relationship with the self
is a source of pleasure and
expansion and needs time
and nurturing in order to grow.
In order to have a relationship
with the self, it is necessary to
have quiet time alone, time to
enrich one’s own spirituality.
A healthy relationship is an
open system, which means
that both information that is
external to the parties and
the relationship are sought,
listened to, and resolved.
Therefore, in healthy
relationships, choices are
very important,, and the
generation of options opens
the possibility to growth and
creativity.
LOVE & ROMANCE
Tips for an effective
Romance
60
Romance is the mutual or genuine
display of affection in all forms.
Companionship and joy in each other is
the direct result of romance. It has the
power to draw couples closer together.
It is that pleasant feeling that you get
when you know your man or woman is
really committed to you.
LOVE & ROMANCE
62
Sweet words that are sexually
charged to your partner
are very romantic. You just
have to be subtle and read
the mood. There are people
who are simply turned on by
beautiful words and there
is nothing more romantic.
Whisper the words to their ear
because, how you say it also
matters. Make sure that your
tone is pleasant.
Make sure that your body
language shows romance.
Touching a woman gently
on her cheek without any
fuss will be very exciting to
her. You need to make sure
that your eyes tell it all. Your
hands should wander in all
the right places all in a gentle
manner. Romance takes
time and it is almost like a
communication that does not
need words.
Buying flowers is one of the
oldest ways of being romantic
however, you can personalize
the gift. Find out what your
partner likes and make sure
that you surprise them at
every opportunity. Romance
is not something you do once
or during occasions and just
forget. It is something that you
have do continuously if you
want your union to blossom at
all times.
Therefore, you do not need
to spend a lot of money to
show this very basic emotion.
If it comes from the heart, it is
good enough. True affection
is not complicated at all; it
simply comes with no strings
attached.
Create a card artistically and
scribble some sweet love
message. This can prove to
be much more valuable than a
diamond ring which took a year
to arrive after being reminded
several times.
are successful because the
two partners work on their
relationship everyday. Lavish
your partner with attention and
tender loving care. If you want
to be appreciated or loved,
you should express genuine
appreciation and love to your
partner.
Bikaner
the city of Historical
reminiscences
64
Bikaner is one of the three main destinations in
Rajasthan in the Desert circuit and a royal fortified city
with a timeless appeal of royal aura. Bikaner is a District
in the northwest of the state of Rajasthan in northern
India. It is located 330 kilometers (205 miles) northwest
of the state capital, Jaipur. It was formerly the capital of
the princely state of Bikaner.
The city was founded by Rao
Bika in 1486 and from its
small origins it has developed
into the fourth largest city
in Rajasthan. Bikaner is
well connected by road, rail
and air links to the rest of
the country. The Junagarh
Fort in Bikaner is the best
maintained and provides
guides to the visitor which is to
be appreciated.
History of Bikaner
Prior to the mid 15th century,
the region that is now Bikaner
was a barren wilderness called
Jangladesh. In 1488 Rao Bika
established the city of Bikaner.
Rao Bika was the second son
of Maharaja Rao Jodha of
the Rathor clan, the founder
of Jodhpur and conquered
the largely arid country in
the north of Rajasthan. As
the second son of Jodha, he
had no chance of inheriting
Jodhpur from his father
or the title of Maharaja.
Therefore he decided to build
INDIAN TRAVELOGUE
his own kingdom in what is
now the state of Bikaner in the
area of Jangladesh. Though
it was in the Thar Desert,
Bikaner was considered
an oasis on the trade route
between Central Asia and
the Gujarat coast as it had
adequate spring water. Bika’s
name was attached to the
city he built and to the state
of Bikaner (“the settlement
of Bika”) that he established.
Bika built a fort in 1478, which
is now in ruins and 100 years
later a new fort was built
about 1.5 km from the city
centre which is known as the
Junagarh Fort. Around 100
years after Rao Bika founded
Bikaner the region’s fortunes
flourished under the sixth
Raja, Rai Singhji. During the
Mughal Empire’s rule in the
country, Rai Singh accepted
the suzerainty of the Mughals
and held a high position of
an army general in the court
of Emperor Akbar and his
son Emperor Jahangir. His
successful military exploits,
which involved winning half
of Mewar kingdom for the
empire, won him accolades
and rewards from the Mughal
emperors. He was an expert
in the arts and architecture
and the knowledge that he
acquired during his visits
abroad are amply reflected in
the numerous monuments he
built in the Junagarh fort.
Karan Singh who ruled from
Laxmi Niwas Palace
1631 to 1639, under the
suzerainty of the Mughals,
built the Karan Mahal
palace. Later rulers added
more floors and decorations
to this Mahal. Anup Singh,
who ruled from 1669–98,
made substantial additions
to the fort complex, with new
palaces and the Zenana
quarter (royal dwelling for
females). He refurbished the
Lalgarh Palace
Karan Mahal with a Diwan-i-
Am (public audience hall) and
called it the Anup Mahal. Gaj
Singh who ruled from 1746 to
1787 refurbished the Chand
Mahal (the Moon palace).
Following him, Surat Singh
ruled from 1787 to 1828 and
he lavishly decorated the
audience hall with glass and
lively paintwork. Dungar Singh
who reigned from 1872 to 1887
built the Badal Mahal (the
weather palace) named so in
view of a painting of falling rain
and clouds. Ganga Singh who
ruled from 1887 to 1943 built
Bikaner Junagarh Fort
the Ganga Niwas Palace,
which has towers at the
entrance patio. This palace
was designed by Sir Samuel
Swinton Jacob. Ganga
Singh’s son Sadul Singh
succeeded his father in 1943
but acceded to the Union of
India in 1949.
Ganga Singh has also built a
new palace north of Junagarh
fort which was designed
and built by Swinton, the
third of the new palaces
built in Bikaner. He named
the building Lalgarh Palace
in honour of his father and
moved his residence from
Junagarh fort to this palace
in 1902. The royal family
still lives in a special suite
Bikaner Junagarh Fort
The fort was built by Raja
Rai Singh, the sixth ruler of
Bikaner who reigned from
1571 to 1612. Rai Singh had
conquered part of Marwar and
had been granted territory in
Gujarat and Burhanpur by
the Mughal emperor Akbar
as a reward for his services
as military commander.
This, as well as funding
from Jodhpur, enabled him
to build the fort. Rai Singh
held high rank in the imperial
courts of both Akbar and
his successor, Jahangir.
During his imperial service
he traveled extensively,
giving him an appreciation of
art and architecture. These
ideas have been incorporated
meticulously into the
architectural style of Junagarh
Fort.
Laxmi Niwas Palace
The Laxmi Niwas Palace is
a former residential palace
of the king of the former
Bikaner state, Maharajah
Ganga Singh. It was designed
by the British architect, Sir
Samuel Swinton Jacob in
the year 1902. The style
of architecture is Indo-
Saracenic. It is now a luxury
hotel owned by Golden
Triangle Fort & Palace P. Ltd.
Lalgarh Palace
Lalgarh Palace was built
between 1902 and 1926
according to Rajput, Mughal
and European architectural
styles. The building was
commissioned by Maharaja
Ganga Singh in memory of
his father Maharaja Lall Singh
and was designed by the
British architect, Sir Swinton
Jacob. It is coated in red
sandstone and has several
grand halls, lounges, cupolas
and pavilions. The building
features magnificent pillars,
elaborate fireplaces, Italian
colonnades and intricate
latticework and filigree work.
The palace houses the Shri
Sadul Museum as well as a
large and important collection
INDIAN HISTORY
Indian
Paleolithic Era
The prehistory of India goes back to the old Stone
age (Palaeolithic). While India lies at the eastern
limit of the hand axe distribution, there are
numerous Acheulean findspots. Hathnora, in the
Narmada Valley has produced hominid remains of
middle Pleistocene date.
WWW.WISHESH.COM | NOVEMBER 2016
NOVEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM

INDIAN HISTORY
The Palaeolithic Age in India
is divided into three phases
in accordance with the type
of stone tools used by the
people and also according
to the nature of climatic
change. The first phase
is called Early or Lower
Palaeolithic, the second
Middle Palaeolithic, and the
third Upper Palaeolithic.
72
Until further and adequate
information is available
about the Bori artefacts, the
first phase may be placed
broadly between 600,000
and 150,000 BC, the second
between 150,000 and 35,000
BC, and the third between
35,000 and 10,000 BC.
Nagarjunakonda in Andhra
Pradesh is an important
site, and the caves and rock
shelters of Bhimbetka near
Bhopal also show features of
the Lower Palaeolithic age.
The broken skull specimen
of Homo erectus is first
& only of its kind in India.
This skull was discovered
on 5th December, 1982 in
the middle of the Narmada
valley in Hathnora, Madhya
Pradesh. It is the most
ancient human remnant
so far discovered in Indian
subcontinent and it was
discovered in situ which
allow a precise determination
of its stratigraphic,
palaeontological and cultural
context all attributable to the
Middle Pleistocene (around
500,000 years ago) age in
the geological time scale.
Recent finds include a
middle palaeolithic quarry
in the Kaladgi Basin,
southern India. A tradition
of Indian rock art dates
to 40 or 50,000 years
ago. Survey has resulted
in the identification of
191 Middle Palaeolithic
localities along the margins
of the Malaprabha and
Ghataprabha rivers.
Paleolithic peoples probably
roamed Afghanistan as
early as 100,000 BC. The
earliest definite evidence
of human occupation was
found in the cave of Darra-i-
Kur in Badakhshan, where a
transitional Neanderthal skull
fragment in association with
Mousterian-type tools was
discovered. The remains
are of the Middle Paleolithic,
dating about 30,000 years
ago. Caves near Aq Kopruk
yielded evidence of an
early Neolithic culture (c.
9000-6000 BC) based on
domesticated animals.
The earliest evidence of
Paleolithic human presence
in the Indo-Pakistani
subcontinent consists of
stone implements found
scattered around the Soan
River Valley in northern
Pakistan. Despite the lack
of fossil evidence, these
tools appear to indicate the
presence of hominids in the
subcontinent as early as
200,000 to 400,000 years
ago and thus are likely to
have been associated with
archaic Homo species.
Pakistan lies on the
postulated southern
coastal route followed by
anatomically modern homo
sapiens out of Africa and so
may have been inhabited
by modern humans as early
as 60,000 to 70,000 years
ago. There is evidence of
cave dwellers in Pakistan’s
northwest frontier, but fossil
evidence from the Paleolithic
has been fragmentary.
Google Pixel XL
Aiming High
74
The new Google Pixel and Pixel XL, are aiming right for
the top of the market. It isn’t a stretch to say that Google
is targeting Apple, the segmentation, pricing and even
design of its two models are pretty much direct equivalents
of Apple’s lineup. It’s a bit of a mashup of designs from
Apple, Samsung, and HTC.
the screen. The
spec sheet lists
2.5D Corning
Gorilla Glass 4, but
curvature at the
edges is extremely
slight. The back
single metal frame
except for a large
patch of glass on
the upper third of
the rear.
Main specifications :
The Pixel siblings have essentially
identical specs apart from screen size,
resolution, and battery capacity. There’s
a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon
821 SoC with two 2.15GHz cores and two
1.6GHz cores for efficiency, along with
integrated Adreno 530 graphics. Both
models have 4GB of RAM and either 32
or 128GB of fixed storage. 32GB unit had
29.7GB of usable space. Considering the
lack of microSD expansion, 128GB might
be the better bet for some in the long
term.
The Pixel XL has a 5.5-inch 1440x2560-
INDIAN VAASTU CORNER
However avoid locating underground water
resource in the South, South-east, South-west
or North-west because these directions are
inauspicious for under-ground water and only
lead to heavy losses.
82
WATER POINT
The placement of well or
tube-well in a house should
be proper, so as to gain
profits and over-all prosperity.
There are some set of rules
that are involved in Vastu for
the location of under-ground
well or tube-well. It has
been observed that well or
tube-well, if placed in wrong
direction leads to numerous
problems in terms of health,
wealth and prosperity. Thus
it is important to give water
its essential space so as to
counteract negative energies
and making the environment
positive.
Where to locate
South-west or North-west
because these directions are
inauspicious for under-ground
water and only lead to heavy
losses.
Problems, if well-or tubewell
is located in wrong
direction:
* Wealth loss
* Low virility
* Sexual problems in male
member
* Enemy trouble
* Quarrel with children
for abundance
Water is one of the significant elements
among Panchbhootas that constitute the
entire concept of Vastu-Shastra.
Some ideal directions for
water resource:
* North
* North-east
* East
However avoid locating
underground water resource
in the South, South-east,
* Death in extreme cases
* Problems in female
members or no female in
family
Therefore it is best to make
well/tube-well in proper
location to avoid any kind of
mishap or loss.
INDIAN SPIRITUAL
By spiritual strength-conquer
the insatiable enemy
by the sense objects and
overpowers the mind are
both only operating under the
intellect. But the atma or soul
is not subject to modification
and is the witness to all these
changes.
known as lust.
Bhagavad Gita
Worshipping the spiritual
masters in disciplic succession,
who with devotion through the
performance of prescribed
Vedic activities have attained
moksa or liberation and have
attested that the eternally
blissful Supreme Lord Krishna,
the originator of all should
be propitiated through all
activities.
84
Chapter – 3 Verse – 43
Sloka:
evam buddheh param buddhva samstabhyatmanam atmana
jahi satrum maha-baho kama-rupam durasadam
Word to word Meaning
evam—thus
atmana—by deliberate
buddheh—of intelligence intelligence
param—superior
jahi—conquer
buddhva—so knowing satrum—the enemy
samstabhya—by steadying maha-baho—O mighty-armed
atmanam—the mind
one
kama-rupam—the form of lust
durasadam—formidable
Verse meaning
Thus knowing oneself to be
transcendental to material
senses, mind and intelligence,
one should control the lower
self by the higher self and thusby
spiritual strength-conquer
this insatiable enemy known as
lust.
Explanation
In the material existence of
life, one is certainly influenced
by the propensities for lust
and desire for dominating the
resources of material nature.
Desire for sense gratification
is the greatest enemies of
the conditioned soul. By the
strength of devotion and
dedication, one can control the
material senses, the mind and
the intelligence.
One may not give up work
and prescribed duties all of
a sudden; but by gradually
developing devotion, one can
be situated in a transcendental
position without being
influenced by the material
senses and the mind-by steady
intelligence directed toward
pure identity.
In the immature stage
of material existence,
philosophical speculations and
artificial attempts to control
the senses by the so-called
practice of yogic postures
can never help a man toward
spiritual life. He must be
trained in devotional services
by higher intelligence.
Modifications such as desire
which is instigated by the
senses and agitates the body
and lust which is inflamed
The method of destroying the
great enemy known as kama
or lust is learned through the
knowledge of Vedic scriptures
received from the words of the
spiritual master. Controlling
the five senses is the key step
in allowing one to benefit from
this Vedic knowledge.
Without restraint of the senses
one has no possibility of
conquering kama. The senses
are superior to the physical
body, the mind is superior to
senses, the intellect is superior
to the mind and the atma or
soul is superior to the intellect.
Moksa or liberation from the
cycle of birth and death is
not possible from studying
various verses in diverse Vedic
scriptures in different contexts.
Diwali which is also known as Deepawali, which is the
most famous festival of the year. Diwali is the five days
festivity period which begins on Dhanteras and ends
on Bhaiya Dooj. In Maharashtra Diwali festivities begin
one day earlier on Govatsa Dwadashi, while in Gujarat
Diwali festivities begin two days earlier on Agyaras and
culminates on Labh Panchami.
86
Diwali
the festival of
lights and prosperity
During the five days of festivity
various rituals are followed and
Goddess Lakshmi along with several
other Gods and Goddesses are
worshipped. Goddess Lakshmi is
the most significant deity during the
Diwali Puja. The new moon day,
which is known as Amavasya, is
the most significant day of five days
of Diwali festivities and known as
Lakshmi Puja, Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja
and Diwali Puja.
Diwali Puja is a very significant
day for the most traditional Hindu
businessmen. On this day, ink bottle,
pens and new account books are
worshipped. Ink bottle and pen,
which are called Davat and Lekhani
respectively, are sanctified by
worshipping Goddess Maha Kali on
them. New account books, which are
called Bahi-Khate, are sanctified by
worshipping Goddess Saraswati on
them.
The most auspicious time to do
Diwali Puja is after sunset. The time
period after sunset is known as
Pradosh. The day of Diwali Puja is
decided when the Amavasya Tithi
prevails during Pradosh. No other
Diwali Puja Muhurat is as good
as Puja Muhurat during Pradosh
even if it is available for one Ghati
(approximately 24 minutes).
Story :
Mirzya is a poetic
experience and
can be given
a shot for the
stupendous
performances and
flawless narration.
Harshavardhan
Kapoor makes an
impressive debut
as an actor.
Mirzya is an epic love saga which
has been based on Punjabi
folklore Mirza Sahiban. Mirzya is
all about two love stories set in
different eras play out in the highly
poetic Mirzya. The first is set in the
ancient times where clan wars and
men on horseback battling with
bows and arrows are common and
the other is a forbidden courtship
is set in the contemporary times
where a modern prince has
created a business empire by
converting his palace into a hotel.
Watch Mirzya to know about what
happens completely and exactly.
Analysis :
The first half of Mirzya starts
with a bang and the movie has
its loud moments. It is Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra’s narration that
has been grand and loud all over.
It never lets you down and the
performances throughout the film
take Mirzya to the next unusual
level. It is the screenplay which
makes the film interesting on the
whole. The interval episodes raise
the heat all over and on the whole
the entire first half of Mirzya is a
treat.
However the second half has a
huge dose of drama which makes
the film fall down. Though the
performances by the lead actors
elevate the film once again, the film
fails to make much impact. On the
whole the second half of Mirzya
has been decent and is worth
watching.
Final Word:
Mirzya is a poetic experience
and can be given a shot for the
Analysis :
songs have been shot well. The
the movie. With an interesting
The second half of the movie has
Shivaay
Analysis :
106
Story :
Ajay Devgn
focuses
much on
action and
lavish visuals
leaving
behind the
emotional
drama
which
has been
crucial.
Shivaay is the story of a dare devil
mountaineer Shivaay (Ajay Devgn)
and during a trek, Shivaay falls in
love with a Bulgarian tourist Olga
(Erika Kaar) after which the duo
turn intimate. The result is a baby
which Olga refuses to raise and
returns back to Bulgaria. Shivaay
names the child Guara (Abigail
Eames) and after nine years, she
comes to know that her mom is
alive. Shivaay and Gaura flies
to Bulgaria after which the real
danger knocks them. The rest of
Shivaay is all about how they fight
against and locate Olga. Watch
the film to know about the rest.
The first half of Shivaay has been
dead slow and it tests the patience
of the audience completely. The
slow pace kills the film’s flavour
despite of the grand visuals
throughout. The film has been shot
in beautiful locales and is made
on a lavish budget. However the
emotional drama has been quite
poor and some of the episodes look
completely unusual. On the whole
with an interesting interval bang,
the first half of Shivaay has its
moments but it is a disappointment
for sure.
The second half of the movie has
enough dose of action episodes
and VFX effects which have been
perfectly blended on screen.
However the movie lacks the
needed soul for the audience to
get emotionally connected. This
kills the complete flavour of the
film and most of the episodes have
been dragged much. The climax
looks too lengthy and without many
interesting episodes, the second
half of Shivaay is strictly for Ajay
Devgn’s fans.
Final Word:
Ajay Devgn focuses much on
action and lavish visuals leaving
behind the emotional drama which
has been crucial. Shivaay is strictly
for Ajay Devgn’s fans and the film
leaves you low.
his life. Premam is all about the
emotions and the moments that
make Vikki happy in love. Watch
the film to feel the exact emotions.
Analysis :
The first half of the film has been
entirely decent with passable love
making episodes and stupendous
entertainment. The makers made
sure that they did not bring the
flavour of Malayalam and made
enough changes while scripting.
The songs have been placed and
shot well in fresh locales. The
pre-interval episodes bring up
the pace and the entire first half
has been decent with impressive
performances.
The second half of Premam too
carries the same mood and feel but
it dips down because of the slow
loud comeback at the right needed
Analysis :
The first half of ISM has been
It is the second half which is quite
Analysis :
The first half of Kashmora has
has enough dose of entertainment.
The VFX effects are said to be
the major highlights of the movie
along with Karthi’s outstanding
All the songs in the first half spoil
make the film interesting and on
the whole the first half of Kashmora
has been just ok.
The second half has enough flaws
throughout the film however the
flashback episodes elevate the
film well. Karthi and Nayanthara
impress the audience big time with
their performances and Karthi’s
