Sri Lanka is globally acclaimed for its rich natural resource base and very high biodiversity. Sri Lanka is in fact listed
as one of twenty five biodiversity hot spots in the world. The Central Environment Authority as the National Agency
for Environment Management and Protection is vested with the responsibility of protecting the natural riches we have
been bestowed by nature.
Although primarily regulatory agency, the Central Environmental Authority initiated the National Green Awards
Scheme with a view to recognizing and rewarding industries and service sector organizing and rewarding industries and
service sector organizations which have demonstrated good environmental performance.
After a thirty year conflict, the present government has commenced a massive development drive in the country with the
goal of providing a better living standard for all Sri Lankans. The Mahinda Chinthanaya Policy document, while
emphasizing the importance of rapid development, has given a high priority to environmental Protection. The policy of
the present government therefore, is not development for the sake of development, but sustainable development. Sustainable
development, is development which meets the needs of the present generation while ensuring that the needs of future
generations are conserved.
