Anchorage Plaza is a series of public spaces that wrap the base of
the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage. Anchorage Plaza is a Department of
Parks-owned space that sits as an entry point to the borough and is
closed to the public.
Anchorage Plaza, including the space to the east and west of the Brooklyn
Bridge (south of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway) and the space under the
Main Street Arch, represents 75,000 square feet. A majority of this space is
currently being utilized by the DOT Bridges Repair Unit.
With the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade stair and Cadman Plaza Park immediately
to the south, DUMBO directly to the northeast, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier
1 two blocks northwest and many neighborhoods within walking distance,
Anchorage Plaza is positioned to create a new civic commons that better
connects Downtown Brooklyn and surrounding communities to the waterfront.
In particular, programming the plaza as a public market would create
opportunities to support local business, provide new community amenities
and bolster an already active destination. Creating a greater destination at
the Brooklyn end of the Brooklyn Bridge would improve the experience for
residents and visitors alike.
