Amateur film festival winner<br />
An amateur filmmaker has won a<br />
Nikon D810 DSLR for her film about<br />
the US 911 emergency phone line.<br />
Cécile Ragot, from France, defeated<br />
over 550 budding moviemakers to win<br />
the Nikon European Film Festival<br />
with her film Not A Pizza Order.<br />
Entrants were asked to create a film<br />
of up to 140 seconds on the theme<br />
‘Everyday Moments’. Award-winning<br />
film director Asif Kapadia (pictured<br />
right) said it was ‘incredibly powerful’.<br />

Photo mystery solved<br />
A man has traced the owner of a photo<br />
album found hidden under the seat of<br />
a chair bought at a flea market in<br />
Brockley, London, after an appeal on<br />
Facebook. Oli Lansley tracked down<br />
Noel Douglas, who is pictured in the<br />
album with family and friends in the<br />
1960s and ’70s. Oli’s Facebook appeal<br />
was shared more than 50,000 times.<br />

Candid food<br />
photography<br />
Don’t assume the winning food photography images<br />
are always carefully lit close-ups of gourmet dishes.<br />
Often, it’s the personalities and environment that<br />
create interesting images. You don’t need to head to<br />
exotic locations, either. There are street-food outlets<br />
and markets in most cities, while many towns have<br />
cafés or restaurants that will welcome publicity shots.<br />
Chefs often make great subjects; think of Bob Carlos<br />
Clarke’s images of Marco Pierre White.<br />
You can get more inspiration when we look at the<br />
winners of the 2016 Pink Lady Food Photographer of<br />
the Year contest in AP 11 June, but in the meantime<br />
here are some tips to help you take great food shots.<br />
1Research food-related<br />
locations and get familiar<br />
with the area and people.<br />
David Griffen, who won an award<br />
for his street-food image from<br />
Kuala Lumpur, visited the area<br />
several times; locals were used<br />
to him and forgot he was there.<br />
2While you don’t need to<br />
have direct eye contact<br />
with your subject, it<br />
makes the viewer feel engaged.<br />
Ensure you aren’t shooting the<br />
back of the cook’s head, and<br />
watch out for background<br />
distractions and clutter.<br />
