The first Jurassic meat-eating dinosaur discovered in Wales is on display in the Main Hall. Until 30th October: Exhibition: Treasures: Adventures in Archaeology Discover treasures from around the world in this new exhibition, including activities for children. £7 adults, £5 concessions, free to 16s + under. It has three heated swimming pools, offering great opportunities for families, dedicated swimmers and social swimmers of all ages and abilities. Lido Ponty features include external and internal showers, heated changing facilities and a state-of-the-art Visitors’ Centre which tells the amazing story of The National Lido of Wales. Open 7.30am–7.15pm. 23rd June – 3rd July Hijinx Unity Festival Various venues around Cardiff. The Festival will take place in a range of venues in Cardiff, with two major hubs of activity: Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay and on The Hayes in Cardiff City Centre. Hijinx created the Hijinx Unity Festival in 2008 to give a high profile platform to stunning work made by disabled and nondisabled artists working together as equals. The festival is vital in changing perceptions of disability, by presenting a varied programme of inclusive and disability arts which can be appreciated by all audiences simply because it is fantastic entertainment of the highest quality. There will be story-telling and discussions with the biggest names in children’s fiction, including Julia Donaldson, Jacqueline Wilson, Malorie Blackman, Andy Stanton, Nick Sharratt, Francesca Simon and Chris Riddell, the current Children’s Laureate. Variety is at the heart of the programme and HAYDAYS will take audiences far and wide, from the hedgerow world of Beatrix Potter to reflections on the 100th anniversary of the battle of the Somme with Michael Morpurgo. This year, William Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary will be commemorated, from comic-strips to stage performance. It is also the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl and a chance for Dahl fans to grab the frobscottle and party at the Dirty Beasts celebratory concert. There will be free Dahl-themed Dream Jar workshops in the Make and Take tent, discussions over Dahl’s Most Villainous Villains with Lindsey Russell of Blue Peter and Word Wizards will explore the biffsquiggling world of Dahl’s dictionary. Learn Dragonese with Cressida Cowell, author of the How to Train Your Dragon series, and make models with Aardman Animations, the wacky creators of Wallace and Gromit. The South Wales Dog & Family Fun Day Bank Holiday Monday 30th May at Fonmon Castle Showground The South Wales Dog and Family Fun Day is now in its fifth year and is all about dogs having fun with their families. We are proud to be the largest fun dog and family day out in Wales. Our shows are good value, fun filled days out for the whole family to enjoy with or without a dog – we like to see wagging tails and a smile count that’s sky high! Expect a mixture of canine and family entertainment, numerous jaw-dropping displays and activities, living history encampments, funfair, donkey rides, go-carts, petting farm and lots of children’s favourite mascots and super hero characters and so much more. Would your child like to enter our free fancy dress competition? Keeping visitors entertained is never an issue due to the abundance of things to see and do. It is a fabulous fun day out for the whole family! Meet ‘Rex’ the T Rex Dinosaur! Should you stay and watch or should you run? Luckily Rex is only a baby T-rex and we have been assured he will be fed before the show so he shouldn’t feel the need to snack on any children! For those visitors who love to shop there shall be a variety of pet and non-pet related stalls selling everything you could want to treat yourself and you four-legged friend. Bring a picnic or sample some of the lovely food available in the artisan food court and bars.
