Fostering in Nottinghamshire
Fostering is caring for a child or young person in your own home when they are unable to stay with
their own families. By becoming a foster carer you can make a real difference to a child’s life. Find out
more about how you can become a foster carer by visiting www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk
You may have watched a fireworks
display on Bonfire Night or at a party.
Fireworks can be fun if you’re sensible
and you stay safe. It’s important that
children are accompanied by an adult when
around a fire and fireworks.
If you’re under 18
• you should never carry a firework in the
street
• you cannot buy fireworks
These rules apply to everyone
• you should never throw or set off a firework
in the street or in a public place
• you should never throw a firework into a
road
• you’re not allowed to set off fireworks
between 11pm and 7am except on Bonfire
Night (the curfew is between midnight
and 7am), New Year’s Eve (the curfew is
between 1am and 7am), Chinese New Year
(the curfew is between 1am and 7am) and
Diwali night (the curfew is between 1am
and 7am)
If you break the law on fireworks you could
be sent to prison for up to six months. If your
children break the law then parents or carers
could be fined.
Fireworks can be great fun so enjoy
them safely!
The Countdown has
started in Mansfield
Mansfield has official started the countdown to
Christmas and the annual Big Switch On event on
Sunday 19 November.
The event attracts thousands every year and will
be packed with festive fun for the whole family. With
craft activities in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre
at the popular Buzzy B Club, street entertainers and
a food court, the town will be set to celebrate ahead
of the big stage show at 3.30pm.
The stage show, hosted by Mansfield 103.2 will
feature plenty of festive music from live acts, lots of
prize giveaways, the cast members from Mansfield
Palace Theatre’s pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk,
and a number of special guests including the big
man in red himself!
The Big Switch On is organised by Mansfield
A small school that makes a big difference
Have you got concerns about class sizes?
Are you worried about your child being
overlooked? Do teachers really know your
child?
Hollygirt is a unique environment. We
help children develop their individual
strengths and abilities whilst ensuring
they are safe, secure and happy. We take
children of all abilities and we only assess
children before they join so that their
educational needs can be met. Despite
this, our academic results are up there
with the highly selective independent
schools in Nottinghamshire. This year,
one in every three pupils got nine or more
A*/A grades in their GCSE examinations.
We believe this is a result of a successful
mixture: small class sizes, teachers’
dedication and a child’s positive attitude
to their school environment.
Headmistress, Mrs Pamela Hutley, said
“I have noticed myself describing our
school as ‘quirky’. It feels right. Our
whole approach is becoming increasingly
different from the big schools and I
am proud to be leading our fabulously
eclectic pupils into their futures”.
We would love to see you at our next
Open Day on Saturday 11th November.
Tours are at 9.30am and 10.30am. All
are welcome. If you cannot make it, just
call us to book an appointment for a
personal tour instead. We look forward to
seeing you.
PT Walk for Sue Ryder
On Saturday 16th September, Primary Times
magazine employees (past and present) took on
the challenge of a 10K walk in memory of their
former boss Steve Edwards who very sadly passed
away in December 2016. The Primary Times ladies
successfully raised over £2,800 for Sue Ryder
Hospice, Nettlebed. They embarked upon this
fund raising day to thank the staff of Sue Ryder
for looking after Steve and his family in the most
kindest and gentlest of ways. Thanks to everyone
who donated for their very generous support.
Panto Preview
Pantomime season is nearly upon us once again…
Oh no it isn’t! Oh yes it is!
Ahem…
Originally, Pantomimes weren’t just restricted to Christmas
time, but happened throughout the year, in conjunction with
religious holidays or the seasons. 200 years ago Pantomimes
were very different, being mostly centred around dancing
and music but over the years, audience participation and the
Pantomime Dames were introduced and Panto became what
it is today.
Although often considered to be a British phenomenon,
Pantomime actually developed from the Italian commedia
dell’arte tradition, involving a part improvised, part scripted
play that also paid homage to Greek comedies that date back
to 400 BC. The idea of role reversal – a man playing the Dame
and a woman playing the principal lead character – is thought
to have its roots in Tudor tradition, where a “Feast of Fools”
celebration would be directed by a commoner. Amazingly,
this custom may have come from Rome where masters and
servants would swap roles for a short time.
Despite its roots, Panto does feel like a uniquely British
phenomenon and can be baffling to those unfamiliar with it.
Apparently, Kevin Spacey (actor and director at the Old Vic
between 2003-2015) was “bewildered” by Pantomime
when he first experienced it, prompting Sir Ian McKellen
to reassure him by saying “So many disparate elements of
theatre are on display…often stretching back to Shakespeare
and the origins of Western theatre tradition and yet unique to
Britain”. The truth is, that whilst Panto is not a universally
popular form of theatre, it flourishes in Canada, New Zealand,
South Africa, and even Jamaica, where Panto combines
with Anansi folklore.
Next time you’re at the theatre for a Pantomime and
you’re shouting “It’s behind you!!” – remember that there’s
a lot of history behind Panto too!! Most importantly – Join in
and have fun!!
A more relaxed approach to pantomime this
Christmas at the Theatre Royal Nottingham
The Theatre Royal Nottingham’s sensational family pantomime,
Beauty and the Beast, will star much-loved TV actress, ex-Loose
Women presenter, and Nottingham native, Sherrie Hewson alongside
television and stage star Ben Richards, zany impressionist and
comedy actor Ben Nickless and pantomime dame extraordinaire,
Andrew Ryan. The show will be packed with all of the ingredients
the Theatre Royal’s panto audience have come to expect; breathtaking
special effects, hilarious comedy routines, stunning sets and
costumes and quality entertainment for all the family.
For very young children, it’s worth considering one of the two special
‘relaxed performances’ on offer at the venue on Wednesday 10
January. A relaxed performance contains all the same elements as a
standard performance but is specially adapted to suit customers with
a wide range of disabilities and is also ideal for families bringing very
young babies to their first pantomime.
