Our Mission
Camp Ramah in California creates religious educating
communities in which campers and staff have fun learning
skills for a life committed to the ideals of the Conservative
movement — God, Torah, the Jewish people and tikkun
olam. Such communities support and strengthen Jewish
identity and experiences fostered in the home, synagogue
and school.
Affiliated with the National Ramah Commission and
under the educational auspices of The Ziegler School
of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University, Camp
Ramah in California works in partnership with institutions
of the Conservative movement in the Western United States.

Dear Camp Ramah Family,
Let me begin with “thank you” – thank you to the many, many volunteers who
have given of their time this year to Camp Ramah, thank you to the many, many
contributors who have given of their financial resources to Camp Ramah, and
thank you to the visionaries who made significant gifts to our Camp that have
long-term impact and bring us closer to the goals articulated in our 50th
anniversary plan.
Allow me to highlight a few of our most significant donors this year. The Stone Family Foundation
enabled us to build the new Ezra dorm that will not only meaningfully enhance the Ezra Program for
special needs young adults, but will also enhance Camp Ramah’s ability to hire and house more specialty
staff for the summer. The Jewish Community Foundation’s Cutting Edge grant will fund Camp Ohr Lanu, a
week-long camping experience for 20 to 30 families with special needs children. The Leibovic family and
their many friends have provided the funds for a splendid new swimming pool with two waterslides and
a myriad of new programming possibilities. The Lowy family, an anonymous San Diego family, the Los
Angeles Jewish Federation and the Foundation for Jewish Camping all provided us with campership
incentives that helped 200 campers experience the magic of a four-week session at Camp Ramah for the
very first time.
We must together dedicate ourselves to raising more scholarship dollars so that the recipients of the
initial incentiveships will be able to return every year with the financial support they need. Jewish camping
is where it’s at and we are spending every day finding new ways to bring kids to camp and then to keep
them, ever improving the experience and ever improving its affordability. Please join me in this effort
with your time and your resources. And join me in December when we honor two wonderful leaders
and role models, Ilana and Mark Meskin. See you at Yom Kehillah (Visitor’s Day) on August 3rd!

Dear Community of Camp Ramah in California,
During daily prayers when the Amidah is repeated, the leader fulfills our obligation
to pray when, after each of his/her blessings, we respond “Amen.” This works in
every case except one: the 18th blessing for gratitude. Why? Because, the rabbis
teach, being grateful is not something someone can do for us. It is something
we must do for ourselves.
What I can do, however, is try to tell you how grateful thousands of Jewish children
are for your love and generosity and support of Ramah. As I prepare to begin my
7th summer as the Director of Camp Ramah in California, I look forward to climbing onto the buses and
greeting kids from Los Angeles and San Diego, from Phoenix and Northern California, from all over the
Western Region of the United States. I look forward to hearing them scream with joy that their summer
at Ramah is about to begin! I feel blessed that last summer, 51 years after we opened our doors for the
first time, I got to see the smiles and hear the laughter of 1,352 campers who fell in love with Judaism
and Israel because you helped to build a magical place in the Ojai Valley called Camp Ramah in
California. I cannot directly express gratitude for those children, but I can tell you, from their smiling
faces and the songs they sang that rang out across the hills, that they are indeed grateful for your love
and support.
As we look towards the future, never believe that Camp Ramah in California is just a summer camp. This
summer, we will send the largest group in our history – 106 graduates – for a summer in Israel on our
sister program, Ramah Israel Seminar. Our counselors form the core of Jewish leadership at Hillels
across the country, doing Israel advocacy on campus and populating lively and inspiring minyanim. A
few weeks ago, I met two of our alumni in Washington DC working as legislative aids for members of
Congress. Others are working on this year’s political campaigns. Still others are working at AIPAC.
Ramah campers and staff are nothing less than the future leaders of the American Jewish community
and, in helping Ramah, you are making a contribution that will last for generations to come.
For your generosity and support, I am grateful. But much more importantly, the children are grateful.
Come to camp some time and they will tell you for themselves.

Honoring Sheila and Aaron Leibovic
We concluded our year with a December 6 th dinner honoring Sheila and Aaron Leibovic,
whose exceptional leadership and generosity have been instrumental in making
Camp Ramah in California’s Capital Campaign a reality. Thanks to the Leibovics, their
family and friends, $525,000 was raised to build a new, large swimming pool with
waterslides, a project that will surely attract countless children to Camp Ramah and
Judaism. The pool will be complete for our campers to enjoy starting Summer 2008.

Letter from the Development Committee Chair
Dear Friends,
I am writing to you with a deep sense of gratitude, to Camp Ramah in particular
and Jewish camping in general. I recently returned from the East Coast, where I
attended the Foundation for Jewish Camp Leader’s Assembly conference, along with
the senior staff and other lay leaders of our camp. After attending many informative
workshops it was heartening for me to learn what I already suspected to be true—
namely, that our camp is in the very forefront of Jewish camps in the United States.
Yes, we have been doing a great job. But there is still much more to do. I agree with the many researchers
who have demonstrated and educators and parents who believe that Jewish camping is the optimum life
experience that can reinforce a child’s perspective on Judaism and solidify their Jewish identity. Towards
that end, we all need to support two very important goals: continuing to make our camp financially
accessible to as many campers as possible, and making certain that our facilities and our programming
remain the best they can possibly be, now and in the future.
Thank you for supporting those goals in 2007 with your generous gifts towards annual operating needs,
capital improvements, programs and scholarships. I am especially grateful for your support of the annual
fundraising dinner in December, when we joined together in a ruach-filled evening to celebrate raising
over $520,000 towards the new swimming pool and waterslides. Construction is now well underway!
This summer will be first that all three of our girls will be at camp for both sessions – two as staff and
our youngest anticipating her Machon summer. I now realize that all the years they spend at camp are
the building blocks which culminate in their love and appreciation for Judaism. Certainly Aaron and I, as
well as our synagogue and day school, have had a significant influence. But we believe most of the credit
goes to Camp Ramah – this is the reason why I initially got involved as a lay leader and why we continue
to give of our time and our financial resources. We know the importance of Camp Ramah and Jewish
camping, and especially the importance of your own support and involvement.
Thank you all for sending your campers to Camp Ramah and for keeping our camp in your hearts and
minds throughout the year with your generous donations.

Dear Camp Ramah in California Community,
We are so blessed by an outstanding Jewish community that grows stronger with
the passing of each year. Camps have risen to the top of the national Jewish agenda
as parents and community leaders increasingly recognize them as the most
effective institutions to instill within children and young adults a strong Jewish
identity and education. As Jewish camps gain more attention the demands for
excellence also rises, and I feel proud to report that Ramah has responded to
these demands by evolving its program to be more innovative and more accessible
to all Jewish children.
Programmatically our camp has enjoyed much success this past year. Ramah continues to address core
values such as Shabbat, Israel, Hebrew, prayer and tikkun olam through activities planned by a talented
staff. We also engage campers in summer recreational activities such as surfing, kayaking, biking, and
rock climbing. Through the generous gifts of our many supporters, campers have built trails, recorded
a CD of their rock and a cappella music, and, this coming summer, will enjoy an expanded swimming
program with a second pool and two waterslides. Plans will soon be underway for a new ropes course
and a multipurpose building to house a Beit Midrash, gym and media arts center.
The great Ramah programs and facilities are also now accessible to more families! In addition to a large
scholarship fund made available by the generosity of many donors, Camp Ramah in California now offers
first time campers four different financial incentive programs. Each program reduces the cost of camp
by a minimum of $1,000, making the costs of a 4-week session as low as $975 for certain first time
families. These incentive programs are made possible through the pioneering contributions of two
generous Ramah families and the leadership efforts of our own Board Chair, Julie Platt.
JewishLiving magazine recently named Camp Ramah in California one of the Top 10 Best Jewish Summer
Camps in North America. We are so proud of this distinction, and excited to work hard to maintain this
reputation.

In Hallel – quoted from Psalms it says
‘even maasu habonim haita l’rosh pina’ –
the stone that the builder refused has
become the head cornerstone. This is
what we have done at Ramah – we have
taken the stone that the builder too often
refuses and made it the cornerstone. The
pride that we experience in watching our
Ezra and Tikvah campers blossom in a
Jewish setting has become an invaluable
and irreplaceable part of the camp
experience. It has therefore become our
priority to offer these special campers
and their families new and improved
programs and facilities.
New Ezra Dorm
Summer 2008 Ezra campers will have a
new space in which to learn life skills and discover
newfound independence. Thanks to a $1 million
grant from the Stone Family Foundation of the
Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, the
largest gift ever donated to Camp Ramah in
California, a new dormitory to house the Ezra
program is almost complete! The dorm will be
ready for use this summer, and will include lounges
for socializing, as well as a kitchen where basic
cooking and clean-up skills will be reinforced in
preparation for group or independent living the
rest of the year.
“To have a space of their own within camp where
the Ezra staff members can learn to cook their
own meals and host their friends and family, all
while continuing to learn how to live Jewish lives,
is an invaluable component of our program,” says
Elana Naftalin Kelman, director of Camp Ramah
in California’s Tikvah program. “This dorm will
radically expand and enhance each participant’s
experience at camp and their impact upon camp
as well.”

Edge Grant, Ramah’s new Camp
Ohr Lanu will bring families
together for a retreat of study,
prayer, respite, support and
fun. Children with special needs

ages four to fourteen, along with their parents
and siblings, will experience specialized, therapeutic
programming in a supportive environment at
Camp Ramah in California.
Camp Ohr Lanu offers something for each
member of the family – special needs children,
their parents and siblings – so that everyone comes
away having gained much from the experience. Ohr
Lanu’s staff will include trained special educators,
behavior and family education specialists, and
individual counselors paired with each family.
Each special needs child will be given the opportunity
to choose a focus within camp – dance,
music, art or drama – facilitated by a
trained therapist in that area. Siblings will
participate in their own group activities,
helping create long-lasting friendships in
an environment of inclusion. Parents will
engage in textual study, networking, and
relaxation, and will meet other families with
similar challenges.
All of these activities will be enjoyed against
the backdrop of a week at Ramah – with its
breathtaking Ojai views, hiking trails, Olympic
size swimming pool, ropes course, and of
course, the spirituality of a Ramah Shabbat
that brings with it unparalleled tranquility and
communal closeness.
Without our Ezra and Tikvah campers and their
families, Ramah would not be the same. Their
spirit and strength have become an invaluable
and irreplaceable piece of this camp. It is our
hope that their spirits will continue to soar at
Ramah for many years to come.

Endowments have been established to provide support for scholarships and for the development of new
programs without the necessity of increasing camp fees. Camp Ramah in California would like to thank all who
have donated to the Ramah Scholarship Endowment Fund and to our Program Endowments, and those families
who have established the following endowments. The current minimum gift to establish an endowment fund is
$30,000. A Scholarship Endowment established at this level will fund half of a session for a camper who
might otherwise not be able to enjoy the magic of a Camp Ramah summer. Many new Program

Expanded Ropes Course to
Enhance Teamwork, Jewish Identity
A summer at Camp Ramah in California has always
been about having fun. The fun at Ramah enables
campers to discover Judaism and make it their
own in an environment that is bursting with excitement,
activity and new challenges. “The fun at
Ramah,” says Rabbi Daniel Greyber, Camp Ramah
in California’s executive director, “is the key to unlocking
kids who are going to grow into the kind of Jews
and the kind of people we know they can be.”
An expanded Ropes Course, to be constructed on
Ramah’s new orange grove property, will ensure that
the fun at camp never stops. The project, slated for
completion for summer 2009, will be funded by
proceeds from this winter’s dinner on Thursday,
December 4 honoring Ilana and Mark Meskin.
The expanded Ropes Course will consist of four
elements: a high ropes course, a low ropes course,
a climbing wall, and an alpine climbing tower.
In addition to providing campers with physical
challenges and team-building exercises, activities
on the new ropes course will tie in themes of
Judaism and Israel, and will largely be taught by
Israeli staff. Campers will scale up a climbing wall
that is painted with a map of Israel. As they climb,
they travel from Eilat to Israel’s northernmost
towns – Tzefat, Metulla, Rosh Hanikra. Team
exercises on the lower ropes course emphasize
the value of Kehillah and treating others as being
created b’tzelem Elokim (in the image of God).
In addition to facilitating Jewish learning, the
expanded ropes course will foster a sense of community
among campers. The low ropes course in
particular will provide challenges that force kids
to work together to come up with a solution. This
teamwork translates into a more positive bunk
environment, teaching valuable interpersonal
skills and providing opportunities for personal
character refinement. The high ropes course is a
physical and emotional challenge that will build
self confidence for its participants as they support
each other and realize what they can accomplish
when they work together.
“We want as many kids as possible to have an
experience on the Ropes Course every summer,”
says Rabbi Greyber. The current ropes course can
accommodate up to 30 campers each day. That
means that less than half of campers have the
opportunity to use the ropes course every summer.

New Entry Area
The new Entry Area will transform the existing staff parking area
– it will be graded, paved and landscaped to provide a formal
arrival and parking area near the entrance to camp. The road will
be extended onto the orange grove parcel to provide one point
of access into Camp Ramah. The current security booth will be
relocated to the west side of the main road, at the entrance to
the new parking lot. The addition of a fence and rows of evergreen
trees will provide an attractive and inviting screen for the
lot to all who enter camp.
Naming Opportunities are available for only ten permanent
parking spaces for Yom Kehillah Community Day each summer,
in perpetuity, at $25,000 each. Your children, grandchildren and

Rabbi Greyber. “That camper is learning about
herself and what she is capable of, about how
community and friends can help you accomplish
just about anything, and about our connection to
the State of Israel.”
Ilana and Mark Meskin, who have been attending
family camp and sending their two daughters,
Myra and Diane, to Ramah for over ten years,
marvel at the profound influence camp has had
on their family. “If we could only have one Jewish experience for our daughters,”
says Mark, “we’d choose Ramah.”

interest in health and love of hiking.
“The physical challenges at camp are a
lot of fun for the kids,” says Mark. “We
need a facility that can increase the
opportunities for physical fun and can
compete with other summer programs,
all the while giving kids the intense Jewish
experience Ramah is renowned for.”
