A Message from the Headmaster 

The Hebrew word for “wise” is hacham, and Sephardim 

therefore give the title hacham to scholars of Torah. Yet the 

Talmud and our tradition usually add still another word when 

talking about such people by calling them talmidei hachamim, 

“students of the wise.” 

Why? For the simple reason that Judaism recognizes a human 

reality: no one achieves full wisdom. The truly wise person is 

the one who realizes that he or she is always a student, attentive 

to one’s own insights, but also alert to the wisdom of others. 

Changing and growing never end. 

As a school, we are always learning. In the last two years we 

have learned that our community is prepared to step forward when 

times are difficult. We have tackled the objective of sustaining 

curricular and instructional excellence while the economy is down. 

We should be proud of the major increases in our allocations to 

financial aid. They have meant the difference. Students who 

otherwise would have left, or would never have come to the school 

in the first place, are gaining the benefits of our general and Judaic 

studies programs, and are breathing the spirit that animates every 

day at Sinai Akiba. 

What has made this possible is that you, our community, have 

recognized the need and responded. While we have also learned 

to be careful in expenditures, it is largely your support that has 

enabled us to sustain our educational excellence, offer increased 

financial aid, and provide our staff with salary increases for the 

coming year. 

Many of you have contributed financially. Many of you have also 

spent untold hours on development efforts and the many other 

committees and activities that make the school what it is. You 

have taught us once again that there is no end of learning from one 

another. 

The result: hundreds of children are themselves becoming 

talmidei hachamim—speaking the language of tradition, singing its 

songs, celebrating its values and joyfully integrating them into their 

growing capacities to enter the world. 

They and all of us are grateful for your contributions and efforts, 

which are appropriately displayed and praised in the pages that follow.

From Rabbi David Wolpe 

The Talmud records many stories of mothers bringing their 

babies to the schoolhouse so that they might catch the strains of 

learning. As mothers today will play classical music to infants, in 

the hope of stimulating their brains, these mothers of the Talmudic 

age hoped to awaken their children’s souls. One such child, we 

know, grew up to be the head of the Beit Din, the rabbinic court, in 

Talmudic times after the destruction of the Temple -- Rabbi Joshua 

Ben Hananiah. 

Since ancient times, parents have led their children to the 

fountains of learning. Each of you who has sent a child to Sinai 

Akiba has performed this invaluable mitzvah. We pray that the 

strains of Torah and culture that our children have heard in these 

halls will accompany them throughout their lives.

From the Executive Director 

The synagogue, for many of us, is a second home. It is home to 

our spiritual needs, our friendships, our Jewish commitments, and our 

support for the Jewish people around the world. We are fortunate 

that within the walls of our home is a school filled with the voices of 

children - our future. 

It is written in the Torah: “You shall teach them diligently unto your 

children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk 

by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up…” 

Torah entrusts in our hands the education of our children in “Its 

way.” The Torah tells us that we teach our children by how we act 

in our homes, how we act in our community and towards the outside 

world. It teaches us that from the moment we get up until the 

moment we retire at night, what we do and how we act is one of the 

ways that we teach our children to walk in the ways of our Torah. 

Our wonderful schools and their staffs, as well as the entire Temple 

staff, create an environment, an educational system and a community 

that helps fulfill the Torah’s vision of a world filled with goodness. 

It is clear that our Sinai community, both synagogue and school, is 

a welcoming home with many opportunities to experience Torah and 

all the goodness that comes from living a Jewish life. Together, we 

continue to look to the future and focus on both the individual and 

collective needs of our extended family members.

Sinai Temple is a world class institution and SAA is its beacon. In 

the true spirit of chevrah and the pursuit of academic excellence, 

administrators, faculty, staff and parents work together to create a 

community of learning, tolerance and tikkun olam. From gesher to eighth 

grade, we nurture the love of learning and Torah that will allow our 

students to be proud Jews and productive citizens of the world at large. 

The SAA Committee is charged with supporting the administration 

to enhance the learning and community experience at the school for our 

students. In a trying economic environment, Lora Silverman, Vice-Chair 

of the SAA Committee and Chair of the Budget Committee, was able 

to present a budget that did not compromise programmatic integrity. 

Against this very same backdrop, Rob Strauss and his Development 

Committee delivered an Annual Giving Campaign that will continue to 

ensure a quality education for our students, and includes additional 

funds to support tuition assistance. Lisa Lainer and the Recruitment 

Committee once again helped fill our youngest classrooms with gesher 

and kindergarten students ready to embrace the love of learning 

exemplified by all of our students. Roberta Goodman-Rosenberg and the 

Education Committee continue to raise the bar of academic excellence 

at SAA. Finally, Silvia Malamud provides a powerful bridge between 

the parents, faculty and the community outside of SAA with a PTA that 

is both inclusive and effective. I would also like to mention Etty Arnall, 

chair of the Grandparents Association who spearheaded a Grandparents 

Association dinner dance that helped fund the eighth grade Israel trip 

for this year and for years to come. We are indeed blessed to have such 

committed individuals give so generously of their time and lead the rest 

of us in making contributions to the school in so many different ways. 

Our responsibilities as lay leaders are not only a labor of love for 

our children but made fun and much more enriched by our stellar 

administrators. For years, Rabbi Scheindlin has run this crown jewel 

with excellence, assisted by an extraordinarily competent administrative 

team—Shelley Lawrence, Helen Molitz, Irit Eliyahu, Marcia Fellner, 

Barbara Goodhill, Janet Rosenblum and Jeanne Jacobs-Gaffney. It is no 

accident that SAA received an absolutely stellar Accreditation Report 

from the California Association of Independent Schools, commending 

our school as they granted SAA a full six year term as an accredited 

educational institution. We thank you for all you do. Chazak chazak

Budget Committee

The goal of the SAA Budget Committee is to set a balanced 

budget that limits tuition as much as possible while still maintaining 

the excellent quality of our school. In a typical year, tuition is 

increased to support competitive pay increases for our outstanding 

faculty and staff, and to fund enhancements of our program. At 

the same time, we must be mindful of our obligation to fund 

financial aid so that our school program will remain accessible 

to all families who desire a Jewish education for their children, 

regardless of ability to pay. This year we were able to meet all of 

these objectives, even though the need for financial aid remained 

very high compared to prior years. Ultimately, we committed to 

raising tuition 3%, which was one of our lowest increases in 10 

years. As you can see from the charts, tuition income does not fully 

cover the expenses of running the school. We are grateful to those 

in our community who help us close that gap each year through 

generous donations. We remain cognizant of the near term effect 

of compounding tuition increases from year to year, and we are 

currently developing a long-term solution to maintain affordability 

of our school. Last, I am grateful to my committee for the time 

and effort they devoted to our task; to our Headmaster, Rabbi 

Scheindlin, for his time, patience and guidance; and to our Business 

Manager, Jeanne Jacobs-Gaffney, for her hard work, graciousness 

and sense of humor throughout this process.

Each year, Sinai Akiba’s Development Committee raises funds 

to supplement the school’s operating budget in order to enrich the 

educational opportunities for every Sinai Akiba student. Under the 

leadership of our Development Chair, Robert Strauss, and the more 

than 50 dedicated volunteers, we successfully completed another 

banner year of fundraising, in spite of a very challenging economy. 

We were joined by the largest group of volunteers in the history of 

the school, and I credit Rob for his enthusiasm and ability to motivate 

so many others to get involved. To Rob, and all the members of the 

Development Committee, who worked tirelessly to help raise these 

crucial funds, thank you for your time and hard work on behalf of 

Sinai Akiba. We simply could not have done it without you. 

I would also like to thank Rabbi Scheindlin for his continued 

guidance and support, as well as SAA Committee Chair, Jeffrey 

Wolman, for his leadership and involvement in all matters related to 

fundraising. To Sandra Oliva and Millie Wexler in the development 

office, thank you both for all of your efforts and hard work to ensure 

the success of our development programs. 

We are all truly blessed to be part of such a caring and warm 

community with a strong culture of giving and shared commitment 

to our school. To our extended Sinai Akiba family of parents, grandparents, 

alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff and friends who 

generously support the school—thank you for providing the resources 

that enable Sinai Akiba to be one of the premier Jewish day schools

This has been the most challenging year for the Development 

Committee in SAA’s history. The economy has severely impacted 

so many of the families that comprise our community. And yet, as 

so many of us struggled, our wonderful SAA community generously 

gave like never before. We’ve all heard the saying, “Those who 

can, should.” This year, those who can, did. Moreover, even those 

who really couldn’t, did anyway. The generosity of our community, 

financially and in spirit, is both amazing and humbling. We, all of 

us who are members of the Development Committee, are truly and 

sincerely touched by the outpouring of support from all sources. 

The Annual Giving Campaign was again exceptionally successful 

under the capable leadership of chairs Gaby and Danny Cosgrove, 

Luiza and Andrei Iancu, and Ellie and Fred Pourbaba. Even in this 

rough economy, we still enjoyed 98% parent participation and 

raised a total of $522,392. 

An additional $464,732 was raised from other fundraising 

programs, including the PTA’s Annual Event and Auction, Raise the 

Paddle, the Grandparents Israel Scholarship Dinner, tribute gifts 

and restricted contributions, many of which were earmarked for 

Tuition Assistance, resulting in total fundraising of $987,124. 

The 2010 Annual Event–Le Chic–was a beautiful evening, and 

everyone who attended had an amazing time. The SAA PTA Board 

acted together as co-chairs of the event, with PTA President Silvia 

Malamud and Directors Adriane Bergman, Elenor Gabay, Cici 

Hallegua, Afsaneh Illoulian, Julie Pardo, Sandy Shohed, Jessica 

Sneider and Leigh Strauss doing a magnificent job. The room was 

beautifully decorated, the food and drink flowed, and the music 

motivated everyone to dance. The Annual Event would not be 

complete without the hard work of our Auction Chairs Adeena 

Fitterman, Patricia Lininger, Neda Mehdizadeh and Shiva Mosch. 

Overall, net of expenses, the Annual Event and Auction raised 

approximately $170,000 including another successful Raise the 

Paddle for Tuition Assistance. 

Under the dynamic leadership of Etty and Claude Arnall and 

parent liaisons Janet Dardashty, Brenda Mehdyzadeh and Sandy 

Shohed, the SAA’s Grandparents Association again demonstrated 

its support for SAA students by organizing social and fundraising 

activities, including Grandparent’s Day and the Israel Trip 

Scholarship Dinner. The dinner, now in its second year, subsidized 

the 8th grade Israel trip and honored Lesley and Jeffrey Wolman. 

Chairs Etty Arnall and Julie Cohen, and co-chairs Sara Aftergood

and Julie Platt, did a spectacular job organizing this lovely event. 

The dinner raised in excess of $79,000, making the overall 

contribution from grandparents the largest in SAA’s history. 

The Headmaster’s Event was held at the lovely Beverly Hills 

home of Lilli and Moussa Mehdizadeh, parents of Haleh and James 

Mehdizadeh. The chairs, Tanaz Asherian, Ellie Khorsandi and 

Brenda Mehdizadeh, planned an exquisite evening with over 130 

people in attendance. 

Our Alumni Council, co-chaired by SAA alumni Jodi Berman ’80 

and Aaron Aftergood '94, enjoyed another great year. Highlights 

included an SAA College Night and several reunions, one of which 

took place in New York City and was hosted by SAA alumnus Rabbi 

Elliott Cosgrove ’85 of Park Avenue Synagogue in Manhattan. 

Fundraising from this group enjoyed growth again this year. It is of 

vital importance to keep our alumni in close touch with SAA and 

each other. 

It has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my 

life serving as the chair for the Development Committee these 

past two years. With the support of SAA Chair Jeff Wolman, 

Headmaster Rabbi Laurence Scheindlin, Development Director 

Janet Rosenblum, and Sandra Oliva and Millie Wexler in the 

development office, as well as our Annual Giving Chairs, Major 

Gift Chairs and Grade Representatives, our committee was able to 

reach its ambitious goals. My deep and sincere appreciation to all.

Annual Giving Campaign 

The Annual Giving Campaign, the foundation of our development 

program, supplements our operating budget from year to year and 

enriches the educational experience for our students. Under the 

leadership of our fabulous chairs, the 2009–10 campaign raised a total 

of $522,662 and enjoyed 98% parent participation! Over 30% of our 

parent donors increased their gifts to the school last year and giving 

was abundant from our grandparents, alumni parents and alumni. It 

is with immense gratitude that we recognize all of our donors for their 

generous contributions and support of Sinai Akiba.

Our Annual Event and Auction devoted the traditional Raise the 

Paddle effort to support Tuition Assistance again this year. Two

Endowments and Special Funds 

Thanks to the generosity of several families, SAA’s students 

and programs benefit from the income of several endowments and 

special funds. We invite you to consider establishing an endowment 

fund or to acknowledge special occasions by contributing to 

any of the following funds. As of June 30, 2010, total endowment 

funds stood at $6,246,269. 

Endowments 

Rosalie Court and Robert Swedlin Endowment Fund 

Provides funds to enhance the quality of Jewish life in our community. 

Ezra Scholarship Fund 

Generates two annual awards—one for academic performance and a second for 

scholarship and financial need. 

Joel Goldman Scholarship Fund 

Created in memory of Joel Goldman and designed to fund scholarships for 

children who could not otherwise attend Sinai Akiba Academy. 

Sally Gunter Curriculum Grant Fund 

Established in memory of Sally Gunter, the fund provides professional growth 

opportunities for Sinai Akiba Academy teachers. The fund offers annual grants to 

teachers for research or for significant curriculum development projects. 

Kianmahd Scholarship Fund 

Provides a source of funds for financial aid and scholarships to deserving Sinai 

Akiba Academy students. 

Liggett Family Teachers’ Endowment Fund 

Funds teacher benefits and training to ensure the high quality of the Sinai Akiba 

Academy teaching staff. 

Sinai Akiba Academy Endowment Fund 

Supports various aspects of the school program, including financial aid and 

program enhancements. 

Sinai Akiba Academy Technology Endowment Fund 

Supports and enhances Sinai Akiba Academy technology programs. 

Pam and George Smith Resource Center Endowment 

Funds the learning support program which helps students who have special 

learning needs. 

Bee and Sam Smotrich Scholarship Fund 

Benefits one or more students attending Sinai Akiba Academy and is 

determined on the basis of financial need. 

Spiwak Scholarship Fund in Memory of Sarah Baran 

Provides financial assistance for deserving students who would otherwise not 

be able to enjoy a Jewish day school education. 

Tenenblatt Family Education Fund 

Supports and enhances the educational program of Sinai Akiba Academy. 

Ethel Weinberg-Jacob Weiss Fund for Jewish Education 

Provides financial assistance for deserving students who would otherwise not 

be able to enjoy a Jewish day school education. 

Special Funds 

Dora and Neil Kadisha Teacher Appreciation Award Fund 

Funds teacher appreciation awards which recognize SAA teachers for their 

loyalty and longevity to the school. Teachers receive an award after 7 years and 

20 years of service. 

Shafai Award 

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Jamshid Shafai, this award is given each year to 

students who demonstrate a long-term commitment to personal development 

and fulfillment of their abilities. 

Bryna Vener Orchestra Fund 

Supports the ongoing activities of the Sinai Akiba Academy orchestra. 

Sinai Akiba Academy Financial Assistance Fund 

Funds tuition assistance for qualified students. 

Technology Gift 

Sinai Akiba Grandparents and Sinai Temple members Anna and Max 

Webb made a special donation this year to enhance Sinai Akiba’s 

technology. The gift made possible the purchase of Elmos for our lower 

school classrooms. An Elmo is a digital document camera that is similar 

to a digital overhead projector, but far more sophisticated. An Elmo can 

stream a live video feed and even connect to a microscope to enhance 

the instructional and learning process for our students. Our sincere 

thanks to the Webbs for making this equipment possible for our school.

Israel Trip Scholarship Dinner 

Honoring Lesley and Jeffrey Wolman 

For the second year, the SAA Grandparents Association 

sponsored a successful fundraising dinner benefitting the 8th 

grade trip to Israel and honoring Lesley and Jeffrey Wolman. 

Chaired by Etty and Claude Arnall and Julie and Arthur Cohen, 

and co-chaired by Sara and Dr. David Aftergood and Julie and 

Marc Platt, the dinner netted close to $80,000. The proceeds 

ensured that all of our 8th grade students could participate
