Sultan Mehmet II, The Conqueror
II. Murat‘ın şehzadesidir. 21 yaşında tahta oturarak
devleti ve ordusunu daha büyük hamleler yapacak
bir kudrete ulaştırmıştır. İstanbul‘u fethetmek
için askerî tarihin kaydettiği ilk büyük ateşli
silahlar ile ordusunu dayanılmaz bir kudret hâline
getirmiştir. Ayrıca 1000 yıllık tarihi boyunca
bütün muhasaraları muvaffakiyetsizliğe uğratan
surları aşmak için seyyar kuleler kurdurmuştur.
Nihayet 6 Nisanda başlayan kuşatma, 22 Nisanda
Fatih‘in donanmayı Beşiktaş‘tan Haliç‘e indirmesiyle
çok şiddetli bir duruma girmiştir. 29 Mayıs
1453‘te yapılan son taarruzla şehri alarak Orta
Çağa son vermiştir.
Bu büyük Türk Sultanı 1481 senesi ilkbaharında
üç yüz bin kişilik bir ordunun başında yeni bir
sefere çıkmıştır. Ancak, Hünkar Çayırı denilen
mevkide hastalanmış ve çok geçmeden 3 Mayıs
1481‘de vefat etmiştir.
He was the crown prince during the reign of Murat II.
Following his succession to the throne at the age of 21, he
reinforced his state and army rendering them capable of
launching more powerful assaults. In order to conquer
Constantinople , he has turned his army into an irresistible
force through using the first large fire guns the
military history has recorded. Additionally, he has built
transportable towers to surmount the city walls, which
had prevented all the sieges throughout its 1000- year
history. The siege, which had finally started on the 6th of
April, turned violent with Fatih launching his navy into
the Golden Horn from Beşiktaş on the 22nd of April.
Following the final attack on May 29th, 1453, he seized
the city and this victory marked the end of the Middle
Ages.
This great Turkish Sultan launched a new campaign in
the spring of 1481 and led an army of 300.000 soldiers.
However, he fell ill at a location called ‚Hünkar Çayırı‘,
the Sultan‘s Meadow, and passed away shortly on May
3rd, 1481
