ASKERİ MÜZE ve KÜLTÜR SİTESİ KOMUTANLIĞI
MILITARY MUSEUM and CULTURAL CENTER COMMAND
Koleksiyonlarının zenginliği ve çeşidi açısından
dünyanın önde gelen müzelerinden birisi olan Askerî
Müzenin kuruluşu modern anlamda olmamakla
beraber 15. yüzyıla kadar uzanmaktadır. 1453‘te
İstanbul‘un Türkler tarafından fethinden sonra Aya
İrini Kilisesi, değerli harp silah araç ve gereçlerinin
toplandığı Cebehane olarak düzenlenmiştir. 1726 tarihinde
MILITARY MUSEUM
The foundation of Military Museum , which is one of the leading museums of
the world in terms of the richness of its collections, dates back to the 15th century,
though not in the modern sense. After Istanbul was conquered by the Turks in
1453, the Saint Irene Church was organized as a ‚Cebehane‘, an armory, in which
valuable war armaments, tools and equipment were stored. In 1726, all the materials
in Cebehane were reorganized and a new foundation, called ‚Dar-ül Esliha‘,
the Place of Arms, was established. The foundations of Turkish museology in modern
sense were laid down in 1846 by the efforts of Artillery Marshall Ahmet Fethi
Pasha and this date has become the foundation of Turkish museology and the
Military Museum for the first time in real sense.
The spaces between the cloisters in the Saint Irene (a space closed on three sides
and opening to outside with arches set on columns on one side) were turned into
exhibition areas through closing them with showcases. In some of such spaces collections
of old war arms, tools and equipment were exhibited while in others collections
of archeological artifacts were displayed.
Shortly after Ahmet Fethi Pasha’s contributions, these collections in Saint Irene
were called the ‚Müzeyi Hümayun‘, the Imperial Museum , having the title “Museum”
in its name for the first time. Subsequent to the formation of the museum
organization, and especially upon an increase in the number of archeological artifacts,
these artifacts were transferred to the ‚Çinili Köşk‘, the Tiled Chalet, and
the foundations of today‘s Archeological Museums in Istanbul were laid down.
Ahmet Muhtar Pasha enriched the arms collections with proclamations and
official correspondence. With its library, cinema, shooting gallery, publications,
costume house and the ‚Janissary Band‘, a qualified museum conforming to the
modern understanding of modern museology was created.
The Military Museum continued its activities in Saint Irene until 1940 and then
suspended its activities for a while, considering that the Second World War may
spread to Turkey as well. After the war risk had reduced, the artifacts stored in the
Maçka Armory began to be displayed again in the Military School ‚s Gymnasium.
Because this building was found to be
insufficient with time and did
not allow any steps for improvement
in the modern sense
to be taken, it was decided
that the old Harbiye
building, with
restoration works
ongoing since 1966,
would be used as
the Military Museum
and it was opened
for visits on February
10, 1993 with a
new arrangement.

Fatih Sultan Mehmet
Sultan Mehmet II, The Conqueror
II. Murat‘ın şehzadesidir. 21 yaşında tahta oturarak
devleti ve ordusunu daha büyük hamleler yapacak
bir kudrete ulaştırmıştır. İstanbul‘u fethetmek
için askerî tarihin kaydettiği ilk büyük ateşli
silahlar ile ordusunu dayanılmaz bir kudret hâline
getirmiştir. Ayrıca 1000 yıllık tarihi boyunca
bütün muhasaraları muvaffakiyetsizliğe uğratan
surları aşmak için seyyar kuleler kurdurmuştur.
Nihayet 6 Nisanda başlayan kuşatma, 22 Nisanda
Fatih‘in donanmayı Beşiktaş‘tan Haliç‘e indirmesiyle
çok şiddetli bir duruma girmiştir. 29 Mayıs
1453‘te yapılan son taarruzla şehri alarak Orta
Çağa son vermiştir.
Bu büyük Türk Sultanı 1481 senesi ilkbaharında
üç yüz bin kişilik bir ordunun başında yeni bir
sefere çıkmıştır. Ancak, Hünkar Çayırı denilen
mevkide hastalanmış ve çok geçmeden 3 Mayıs
1481‘de vefat etmiştir.
He was the crown prince during the reign of Murat II.
Following his succession to the throne at the age of 21, he
reinforced his state and army rendering them capable of
launching more powerful assaults. In order to conquer
Constantinople , he has turned his army into an irresistible
force through using the first large fire guns the
military history has recorded. Additionally, he has built
transportable towers to surmount the city walls, which
had prevented all the sieges throughout its 1000- year
history. The siege, which had finally started on the 6th of
April, turned violent with Fatih launching his navy into
the Golden Horn from Beşiktaş on the 22nd of April.
Following the final attack on May 29th, 1453, he seized
the city and this victory marked the end of the Middle
Ages.
This great Turkish Sultan launched a new campaign in
the spring of 1481 and led an army of 300.000 soldiers.
However, he fell ill at a location called ‚Hünkar Çayırı‘,
the Sultan‘s Meadow, and passed away shortly on May
Kesici Silahlar Salonu
Cutting Weapons Hall
Bu bölümde sergilenen İslamiyet Dönemi kesici
silahların en eskisi 12. yüzyıl sonuna aittir. Koleksiyondaki
kılıçların en önemli grubunu Yavuz Sultan
Selim‘in Mısır Seferi sırasında İskenderiye‘deki
Memluk hazinesinden ele geçirilen kılıçlar oluşturur.
Koleksiyonun büyük bölümünü oluşturan Türk
kılıçları, kama, hançer ve yatağanlar (Osmanlı ordusunda
genellikle piyade sınıfı olarak bilinen yeniçeriler
ile denizci askerler olan leventler tarafından
kullanılan kesici silah) 15. yüzyıldan başlayarak 19.
yüzyıla kadar geniş bir yelpaze içinde değerlendirilebilirler.
Bu bölüm içinde 16. yüzyıldan başlayarak kronolojik
düzende sergilenen yatağanlar ayrı bir grup oluştururlar.
Sergilenen silahlar arasında Arap kökenli
olan ve 19. yüzyıla tarihlenen cenbiyeler ile Türk
ve Kafkas kökenli kamalar da bulunmaktadır.
Kesici silahlar salonundaki diğer önemli bir
grubu Türk, Memluk, İran balta ve teberleri
(genellikle hükümdar maiyetinde
bulunan özel muhafızlar ile dervişlerin
kullandığı ay biçiminde bazen iki
yüzlü olan bir harp silahı ve derviş
sembolü) teşkil eder. Askerî
Müze zengin bir alem
(bayrak ve sancak gönderlerinin
tepelik bölümünde
kullanılan ve orduların başında
ordunun sembolü olarak
taşınan bir tepelik)
koleksiyonuna
sahiptir.
Kesici silahlar
salonu girişinde
sergilenen bu alemler daha
çok Memluk ve İranlılara aittir.
The oldest among edged weapons of the Islamic Period
exhibited in this section dates back to the late 12th
Century. The most important group among the
swords in the collection is comprised of the spoils
of the Egyptian Campaign of Yavuz Sultan Selim
acquired from the Memluk Treasury in Alexandria
. The Turkish swords, stilettos, daggers and
‚yatagans‘ (an edged weapon used by the
Janissary and the mariners known
generally as the infantry class in
the Ottoman army called ‚levends‘)
forming a large part of the collection
have its origins in various periods
ranging from the 15th century to
the 19th century.
‚Yatagans‘, which are exhibited in chronological
order from the 16th century
onwards in this section, constitute a separate
group. The ‚cenbiyes” daggers of Arabic
origin from the 19th century and daggers of
Turkish and Caucasian origin are among the
weapons displayed in this section.
Another important group in the edged weapons
hall is comprised of the Turkish, Memluk and Iranian
axes and ‚tebers‘, (a crescent shaped war weapon
sometimes with two edges, generally used by the private
guards of the monarch‘s escort and dervishes. It
is a symbol of the dervish). The Military Museum has
a rich collection of ‚alems‘ (a finial used at the top of
the flagpole and starboard pole and carried as a symbol
before the armies). These alems displayed at the
entrance of the edged weapons hall are mostly of Memluk
and Iranian origin.

Savunma Silahları
Defense Arms
İslam savunma silahları; miğfer, zırh takım (gömlek,
kolçak, dizçek), kalkan ve hayvan zırh takımlarından
(boyun, sağrı ve at alın zırhı) oluşmaktadır. İslam
savunma silahları salonunda Osmanlı, Memluk,
İran, Akkoyunlu, Şirvanşah ve Timurlu dönemlerine
ait 14.yüzyıl ile 18.yüzyıl sonlarına kadar olan
zaman dilimini kapsayan zengin bir koleksiyon sergilenir.
Bu eserler biçim, süsleme özellikleri ve yapım
teknikleri bakımından birbirine çok benzemekle
birlikte dönem dönem form ve süsleme motiflerinde
farklılıklar görülebilir.
Savunma silahlarında dayanıklılığından dolayı
tercih edilen malzeme demirdir. Ancak
sadece Osmanlılarda 16.yüzyıldan sonra miğfer,
kalkan ve at alın zırhlarında görülen bakır
üzerine tombaklama tekniğinde yapılmış pek
çok malzeme bulunur.
Savunma silahlarının bir alt grubunu da
sadece törenlerde kullanılmak üzere
yapılanlar oluşturur. 16. yüzyıldan
itibaren görülmeye başlanan ajur
tekniğiyle yapılmış plakaların,
koyu kırmızı kadife kumaş üzerine
aplike edilmesiyle meydana
getirilen miğferler (zerrin
külahlar) ve söğüt dalı üzerine
renkli ibrişim sarmak suretiyle
oluşturulan kalkanlar bu
grubun en çarpıcı örnekleridir.
Islamic defense arms consist of helmets, suits of armor
(jackets, armbands, knee plates), shields and animal
armor sets (neck, rump and horse frontal armor). In
the Islamic defense arms hall, a rich collection from
the Ottoman, Memlukî, Iranian, Akkoyunlu, Shirvanshah
and Timurlu periods covering a period from
the 14th century to the late 18th century is displayed.
Even though these works are very similar in terms of
form, adornment characteristics and manufacturing
techniques, slight differences between them in terms of
their forms and adornment motifs may be seen from
period to period.
The preferred material for defense arms is iron due to
its endurance. However, only in Ottomans, there are
many materials produced through gilding on copper
such as helmets, shields and horse frontal armors after
the 16th century.
A sub-group of defense arms includes the materials
that are produced to be used merely
in ceremonies. Helmets produced by the
appliqué of the plates made by embroidery
openwork, which was a method
started to be used in the 16th century,
on dark red velvet fabric (zerrin conical
caps) and shields produced
by wrapping colored silk thread
on willow branches are the
most striking examples of this
group.

Ateşli Silahlar
Firearms
16. yüzyıldan 20. yüzyıl başına kadar imal edilmiş
fitilli, çakmaklı, kapsüllü ve iğneli mekanizmalı
ateşli silah örneklerinin sergilendiği Ateşli Silahlar
Salonu‘nda, ateşli silah mekanizmalarının gelişimi
izlenebilir.
In the Fire Arms Hall, in which examples of fire arms
with matchlock, flintlock, caplock and pin mechanism
covering a period from the 16th century to early 20th
century are displayed, the development of the fire arms
mechanisms can be observed.
In the hall, examples of rifle and pistol manufactured
in various European countries and the United States
of America during a period between the 16th century
and the 20th century are displayed as well.
The examples in this hall, where flintlock and matchlock
rifles and pistols are exhibited, manufactured in
Anatolia with Istanbul as the center and in the regions
outside Anatolia such as Caucasian, Azerbaijan , the
Balkans, Egypt , Syria and Arabian regions are evaluated
in a historical period spanning from the 16th century
to the 20th century. In addition to the Ottoman
arms technology, the wealth of adornment techniques
and motifs can be observed on these arms.

Mehter
Janissary Band
Türk tarihi dünyada askeri başarılar ve zaferlerle
tanınmıştır. Tarihte askeri harekatların, şaşaalı
davullar ve özel ritimlerle desteklenmesi geleneği,
Hunlardan itibaren zamanımıza kadar geçen sürede,
birçok Türk devletinin ordularında devam
etmiştir. Başlangıçta tuğ ve davulla başlayan bu gelenek,
zamanla gelişmiş ve zenginleşmiştir. Böylece
Hun Türklerindeki “tuğ vurma” geleneği Selçuklularla
tabılhanelere ve Osmanlılarda mehterhanelere
dönüşmüştür. Bu dönemde mehterler ordunun,
kalelerin ve hatta toplumun müzik ihtiyacına cevap
veren kuruluşlar olarak önemini korumuştur.
Tarihi süreçte devamlı gelişen ve yenilenen mehter,
ilk çağlardaki Türk devletlerinden, Osmanlıya
kadar olan zamanda, bu devletlerin coğrafi
genişliği bakımından zamanla tüm dünyaya yayılmıştır.
XIX. yüzyılın başından itibaren önce
Prusya daha sonra Rusya, Polonya ve Almanya
gibi ülkelerin mehterler kurarak tuğ takımları
oluşturdukları bilinmektedir.
Osmanlının son dönemlerinde yeniçeri teşkilatının
bozulmasıyla kapatılan mehterler, Avrupa’da
geliştirilen askeri bandolar olarak günümüze
kadar gelmiştir.
1911 tarihinden itibaren, İkinci Meşrutiyet ile
birlikte mehter teşkilatını yeniden canlandırma
faaliyetleri baş göstermiş, „Müze-i Asker-i Osmani“ye
bağlı olarak yeniden tarih sahnesine
çıkmıştır. Mehterhane-i Hakani adı ile kurulan
bu takım 1914-1918 Birinci Dünya Savaşı‘ndaki
bazı cephelerde ve Kurtuluş Savaşı‘ndaki Kuvva-i
Milliye hareketlerinde etkin rol üstlenmiştir.
Askeri Müze ve Kültür Sitesi Komutanlığı bünyesinde
faaliyet gösteren Mehteran Birliği bu tarihi
geçmişin, zamanımızdaki sembolik bir ifadesi
olarak haftanın beş günü nevbet vurmaktadır.
Mehter bizi Türk tarihinin sayfalarında gezdirmektedir.
Türk hamasi havalarını dünyada ve
yurt içinde seslendirerek halkı coşturmaktadır.
Savaşların kazanılmasında tarihler yaratan mehter,
zafer esintilerini günümüze taşımaktadır.
Mehter törenlerin vazgeçilmez bir topluluğudur.
The Mehter has, since the first Turkish state in history,
been an element not only supporting, encouraging and
satiating the spirit of the Turkish land armies, but also an
element representing the emotions of a victorious nation.
Turkish history is known with military achievements and
victories worldwide. The historical tradition of supporting
military campaigns with imposing drums and special
rhythms were continued in the armies of many Turkish
states in the timeframe from the Huns to present.
This tradition that started initially with ensign and drum
grew and flourished in time. Thus the tradition of the Hun
Turks of stomping ensign transformed to large drums in
the Seljuks period and ‚Mehterhanes‘ , a band of varied
instruments, in the Ottomans. The Mehter in this period
maintained its significance as it satisfied the need for
music in the army, the fortresses and, in fact, of the public.
The Mehter Band, which was continuously improved
and renovated during the course of history to the whole
world in the timeframe from the Turk states until
the Ottoman in terms of geographical expanse of these
states. It is known that from the beginning of the XIX
century onwards Mehter bands were established first
in Prussia, then in countries such as Russia, Poland
and Germany formed ensign bands.
From 1911 onwards, starting with the Second Constitutional
Monarchy actions to rejuvenate the Mehter organization
were taken and it re-appeared on the historical
stagebeing subordinate to the Ottoman Military Museum.
This band established under the name The Khan‘s
Mehter Band, assumed effective role in certain fronts
during the First World War from 1914 to 1918 and in the
National Forces action during the War of Independence.
The Mehter Band Company operating under the Military
Museum and Cultural Complex Commandment‘s
organization beats ‚nevbet‘ five days a week as
a symbolic expression of the past. The Mehter Band takes
us through the pages of the Turkish history. Giving
voice to Turkish bravery music country and worldwide
they elate the public. The Mehter band that made history
in winning wars carries the breath of victory to our
day. The Mehter band is indispensible to ceremonies.
