World Asthma Day Symposium
Asthma self-management and control is substandard for many people in our community.
There is a lot more that can be done to help people with asthma. Taking control of their condition and responsibility
for asthma management cannot be left solely to the patients. We need a collaborative and coordinated effort
between patients, carers, health professionals, community groups and the health care network to truly make a
difference. The evidence suggests that when these participants work together, positive health gains result.
World Asthma Day 2014 is on Tuesday 6th May and the Asthma Foundation WA will be holding a Symposium,
bringing together some of the key players in managing and controlling asthma.

Asthma Matters
Welcome to our “special edition”
of OnAir. In this edition, we wish to
bring to your attention four exciting
developments occurring within your
Foundation.
Last month saw the delivery of the 10th Annual
Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma. This year we
were very proud to have Bupa as the naming
rights partner and we hope that this relationship
continues for many years to come. Despite some
early planning issues, the team at AFWA delivered
once again and our overall proceeds from the event
was $396,000 at time of print. With 7,112 riders
participating, the Bupa Bike Hike for Asthma was
another resounding success. I thank Jacqui Swift
and Katie Turton for co-ordinating the fundraising
effort along with Corporate Sports Australia for
delivering the event in a very professional manner.
As part of an Asthma Australia National initiative
supported by AstraZeneca, WA will host a
Symposium on Tuesday 6th May, World Asthma
Day, and I strongly encourage you to attend if
possible as we have lined up some of the world’s
foremost experts to present on asthma.
Our call for Membership of your Foundation
continues and we hope to secure 500 new members
of our “Asthma Army” by June 30. Please help us
if you can.
Lock in Saturday 12th July as the date when we all
have the opportunity to recognise and award those
who have committed their lives to establishing and
assisting the Asthma Foundation WA. I do hope you
can be part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations.
Finally, a warm welcome to our newly
elected President, Mr Tony Carter.
Tony has been a Board Member of the
Foundation since 2011 and accepted
the role after work commitments
prevented Mr Cathal Smith from
continuing in the Presidents role. Your Board works
tirelessly behind the scenes and is very much part
of the reason the Foundation is enjoying its current
success.
The creation and development of the Asthma
Foundation of Western Australia Inc. is an
inspiring example of how a small group of people
recognised a need in the community and took it
upon themselves to do something about it.
Asthma sufferers can be thankful that such a
group existed who were prepared to disregard the
difficulties and accept the responsibilities associated
with such an undertaking.
On July 6 1964, this group of dedicated individuals
came together to decide how they could help
people with asthma in WA. Led by Judith Barton,
this group gathered to hear from a representative
from the Asthma Foundation of NSW, who had
travelled to WA in the hope of setting up a similar
organisation here in the west. Hence, the Asthma
Foundation WA was formed and over the past
50 years, has grown to become a trusted and
respected advocate for people with asthma in
Western Australia.
In celebration of this milestone, the Asthma
Foundation WA will host a Gala Dinner on Saturday
12th July at the Government House Ballroom. We
invite everyone who has been involved with the
Foundation in its 50 year history to attend, as we
reflect on our achievements, celebrate and look
forward to the future with optimism.

Celebrating 10 Years Riding on Perth Freeways
This year, the Asthma Foundation WA celebrated 10 years of the “Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma”, the
Foundation’s largest and longest running fundraising initiative.
The 2014 Bupa Bike Hike for Asthma was another
great success, with over $156,000 raised so far - a
magnificent effort. On Sunday 23rd March, 7,112
people jumped on their bikes to raise funds and
awareness for the Asthma Foundation WA.
Special thanks to CBI Kentz Joint Venture who
have raised $40,000, and had 89 participants in
the event. This is CBI Kentz Joint Venture’s third
year of involvement in the event and in that time,
they have raised in excess of $92,000 for the
Asthma Foundation WA – a magnificent effort for
which we are truly grateful.
To the Coglioni Cycling Club, we say thank you
for their support again this year, raising another
Team CBI Kentz Joint Venture $14,000 on top of the $32,450 they raised
last year. Bev Byard has raised $4,580 so far, a
magnificent effort! Thank you for your wonderful commitment.
We welcomed new event sponsor Bupa this year and sincerely thank them for their support of the event
and look forward to their continued involvement.
To Channel 9, The Sunday Times, PerthNow and 96FM for the media coverage and support provided
we say thank you, along with Jetts Fitness, the City of Perth, Bike Exchange, Cycle Instead, Cycle Sport
Western Australia, Baker’s Delight and the Australian Institute of Fitness for your contributions.
Sincere thanks must got to the Department of Transport, Main Roads and the Public Transport Authority
for their on-going support and facilitation of our event.
Finally, a special thank you to Corporate Sports Australia for staging their third and most successful event
for the Foundation.
Over the past 10 years, the Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma has raised almost $2.5 million. This is an
outstanding result and one that the Foundation is both proud of and grateful for. These funds have
contributed greatly to the financial sustainability of the Foundation and ensured that we can continue to
provide the WA community with essential asthma support. It has also resulted in the Foundation being in a
position to increase its commitment to respiratory research funding, which after all, is a large part of why
we exist.
Thank you once again to all of our
fundraisers, donors, volunteers and of
course, those who rode in the event.
Without your support, this event wouldn’t
be possible and we sincerely thank you
for helping us make a difference to those
whose lives are affected by asthma.
