ASTHMA MATTERS
The first quarter of 2016 saw
the busiest three months
on record for the Asthma
Foundation WA (AFWA).
This period was brought
about by the decision
to manage WA’s largest
community cycling event the
ECU Freeway Bike Hike for
Asthma in-house.
Acquiring sponsors for the event, the increased
expectation of fundraising and the ultimate measure of
success being the number of riders who participated,
meant the workload was extremely challenging for the
team.
During this time AFWA also launched a new season
of Tackling Asthma with the Western Force and have
made a solid start on the Telethon-funded promotion
campaign of Manage My Asthma, Phase II.
Whilst all this was happening, our Health Services Team
set about delivering high quality education and training
programs throughout regional Western Australia.
All in all, the team has worked extremely hard over this
period and we are all very proud of their efforts.
The end of the financial year is fast approaching
and like all not-for-profit organisations, AFWA has
experienced a reduction in corporate support due to a
dramatically slowing economic climate. To maintain the
AFWA’s history of success, we will press forward with
innovative ideas and initiatives.
The AFWA Business Plan is currently being reviewed
for the 2016/17 budget. We are confident that AFWA
will continue to deliver all of our current programs, as
well as introducing new initiatives and continues to
contribute to respiratory research.
Raising awareness of asthma and promoting the correct
management of the disease remains a vital strategy
in all we do. One of the notable outcomes from the
recent ECU Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma was the
level of media coverage that asthma and the Asthma
Foundation WA received throughout WA.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to the Mellen
Events team whose commitment to making the event
a success was infectious. The Department of Transport,
Main Roads, Transperth and the West Australian Police
were terrific to work with. We hope the event in 2017
is bigger and better.
I hope you enjoy reading about the work of the
Foundation, join me in welcoming new partners, and
remain supportive of your Foundation.
Dr Svetlana Baltic, Senior Scientist,
Molecular Genetics Unit at Harry
Perkins Institute of Medical Research
and MASAC member
A LOCAL RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH
AFWA CONTRIBUTING TO LOCAL RESEARCH
Dr Svetlana Baltic was awarded a Project Grant
of $26,500 from Asthma Foundation WA (AFWA),
as part of the research grants announced during
National Asthma Week in September 2013, and
the final report from her research has recently
been published.
Dr Baltic’s research was entitled “Aberrant
alternative splicing defines the severity of
asthma.”
Dr Baltic explains, “We have always known that
asthma had a link to the immune system, but until
now, researchers haven’t understood exactly why the
genes involved in the immune system act differently in
people with asthma. Every human cell contains a full
range of human genes. But those genes are expressed
in different ways – or have different variations –
depending on the type of cell.”
The gene variants are produced by a process called
“alternative splicing”. Alternatively spliced genes are a
normal phenomenon – around 95% of all human genes
are alternatively spliced. But sometimes in disease, the
expression of these variations is abnormal, and the cells
don’t function as they should.
Dr Baltic noted, “in our studies so far, we have shown
that there are different variants of genes expressed in
people with asthma compared with people without
asthma. This difference also determines whether a
person has mild or severe asthma.”
Dr Baltic continued, “We have also discovered that
variants within two specific genes, known as SETD7
and KDM6A can influence the function of the whole
immune system, affecting hundreds of genes. This
means that using gene therapy, we can now correct
the expression of these variants, and actually change
the expression of many of the genes that affect the
function of the immune system. This could make a
person with asthma’s condition less severe, or maybe
cure their asthma all together.”
This discovery marks the beginning of exciting new work
on these gene variants. Dr Baltic’s research suggests
that we need to understand the mechanisms of what
regulates the ‘alternative splicing’ and expression of
specific splice variants. This potentially means new
treatments for people with asthma could be on the
horizon.
AFWA CEO David Johnson said, “Dr Baltic has
recently joined AFWA’s Medical and Scientific Advisory
Committee (MASAC) which is made up of clinicians,
researchers and physicians who are all working at the
forefront of respiratory research. We look forward to
Dr Baltic’s input and experience to AFWA’s ongoing
research funding and her gene research outcomes is
very positive for asthmatics.”
PhD RESEARCH INTO ASTHMA
IN DEVELOPING NATIONS
The Asthma Foundation of WA (AFWA) recently
provided additional funding for PhD Candidate Alicia
Annamalay from UWA School of Paediatrics and Child
Health research into asthma in developing nations.
Entitled ‘The Role of Viruses, Bacteria and Environmental
Factors in Acute Lower Respiratory Infections and
Asthma in Developed and Developing Populations’,
Alicia was supervised by Professor Peter Le Souëf who
was also from UWA School of Paediatrics and Child
Health.
Respiratory illnesses including asthma are a leading
cause of childhood morbidity in both developed and
developing countries. This project investigated the roles
of respiratory viruses and bacteria in causing respiratory
illness in children from three African populations
namely South Africa, Mozambique and Morocco.
The findings from this project confirmed the importance
of respiratory viruses and bacteria, as well as the host
immune response in causing respiratory illness in
African children.
Many of the findings from Alicia’s project were unique
to the geographical locations studied and for the first
time included an HIV-infected group.
Investigations of the respiratory bacteria (in the throat
microbiome) confirmed that certain bacteria were
more abundant in children with respiratory illnesses
compared with children without respiratory illnesses
as well as in children with HIV compared with children
without HIV.
Alicia reported, “We also identified significant
associations between several cytokines (cells of the
immune system) and respiratory illness, HIV infection
and respiratory virus identification”.
The report concluded that the “findings illustrated the
role of HIV-infection in respiratory illness and highlight
the need for further studies focused on HIV-infected
populations. Through this study, we were able to
retrieve invaluable information about the causes of
respiratory illnesses in African children”.
NEW MEMBERS OF
RESPIRATORY
RESEARCH
GRANT TEAM
Three new members have been welcomed by the
research arm of Asthma Foundation WA (AFWA) which
is made up of clinicians, researchers and physicians – the
Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee (MASAC).
Professor Dierdre Coombe, Professor Li Ping Chung
and Dr Svetlana Baltic have recently joined the eightperson
MASAC, chaired by Professor Graham Hall, who
is Head of Paediatric Respiratory Physiology and Deputy
Director Telethon Institute for Child Health Research.
Other MASAC members include: Professor Peter
Henry, Dr Phil Stumbles, Professor Mark Everard and
Dr Anthony Kicic.
One of the main roles of AFWA is to fund vital research
on asthma and to date AFWA has contributed over
$5million to respiratory research. All respiratory
research grant applications are reviewed by MASAC,
and are awarded each year during National Asthma
Week.
Dr Baltic is the Senior Scientist at the Molecular Genetics
& Inflammatory Unit in the Harry Perkins Institute of
Medical Research.
(L-R) New MASAC member Professor Deirdre Coombe (MASAC)
with Board Member Lydia Kilcullen and MASAC member
Associate Professor Anthony Kicic
Leaving MASAC and Life Member Professor Alan James with
AFWA Board President Tony Carter.
Professor Coombe heads the Molecular Immunology
Unit at Curtin University of Technology.
AFWA CEO David Johnson said ‘We are extremely
fortunate to have clinicians and researchers of this
calibre join our committee. All of our committee
members are working at the forefront of respiratory
research, and add immense value to the service that we
provide to the WA community’.
ASTHMA, THE
FLU AND YOU
Influenza, or the flu, is a highly contagious viral infection that infects the
respiratory tract (nose, throat and lungs). It spreads easily from person to
person through the air by coughing or sneezing, or by direct contact with the
virus on hard surfaces or people’s hands. You can’t see it but it is there.
Australian flu outbreaks are generally seasonal, occurring between May and
September.
Symptoms of flu can include:
• High fever • Sore throat
• Dry cough • Feeling unwell
• Headache • Muscle and joint pain
How will the flu impact asthma?
The flu and other viral infections are the most common
trigger for asthma flare-ups. People with asthma who
contract influenza are at a higher risk of experiencing
complications.
These complications can include:
• more severe asthma flare-ups,
• pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections,
• days lost from work and school,
• hospitalisation and even death.
What can you do?
The best way to protect yourself from the flu and
spreading it to others is annual flu vaccination.
The flu virus is constantly changing, so it is important
to have the flu vaccine every year. It is best to be
vaccinated in autumn so your body has time to protect
itself before the flu season starts. This will ensure you
and your family are protected against the most recent
flu virus strains that may be around. The flu vaccine is
recommended for everyone from six months of age.
Everyone with asthma and their family members should
be immunised against the flu.
People who are most at risk of influenza and its
complications can access the vaccine free under the
National Immunisation Program. These are:
• People aged 65 years and over
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six
months to less than five years
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are
15 years and over
• Pregnant women
• People aged six months and over with medical
conditions such as severe asthma
Stop the spread of flu
• Wash your hands regularly and properly with soap
and water, particularly after touching your nose or
mouth and before handling food
• Sneeze and cough into tissues or your elbow, not
directly into your hands, to prevent the spread of
germs (Tissues should be thrown away immediately
and hands washed)
• Clean surfaces regularly, especially if someone has
a viral illness
• Do not share personal items
• Try to avoid contact with infected people. If you
can’t, then stand at least one metre away from the
infected person and don’t stand directly opposite
them
• If unwell with flu-like symptoms it is advisable to
stay at home to prevent the germs spreading in the
workplace and the community
Visit your GP for an asthma review to make sure
you’re on the right medicines to manage your asthma,
particularly your preventer and make sure your Asthma
Action Plan is up to date. This will help you recognise
and treat signs of worsening asthma symptoms.
Speak with your GP or pharmacist for further
information about asthma and the flu.
Protect your family and friends who have asthma
– get immunised against influenza.
5

People with asthma are at a higher risk of visiting an emergency department
due to a flu virus, so everyone with asthma should be vaccinated.
IT’S ABOUT TIME TO TAKE
ASTHMA SERIOUSLY!
Did you know that 3 out of 4 people wouldn’t know what to
do if someone had a potentially life threatening severe asthma
attack? Would your friends, family, colleagues, fellow shoppers or
commuters know what to do if it were you or your child having an
asthma attack?
Asthma Foundation WA provides free community
and individual asthma education as well as a free call
1800 ASTHMA hotline to help West Australians
manage asthma and linked conditions.
One in ten West Australians have asthma and we often
hear from people that they don’t think others take their
asthma seriously enough, whether that is colleagues,
their child’s school or relatives.
It is important for people with newly diagnosed asthma
to have one on one asthma education to ensure it is
well controlled from the start, leading to greater
compliance with medication and asthma management.
It is especially important to discuss asthma with a
parent and child directly to ascertain how their asthma
is currently being managed, and any issues relating to
asthma medications and techniques.
FIRST AID TRAINING IN RURAL WA
The AFWA Health Services Education and Training Officers travel to rural Western Australia to deliver first
aid training. During these trips, free asthma education and awareness sessions are also delivered to schools,
community groups and health professionals.
Ben’s story
Ben was not taking his preventer as prescribed; often
missing his morning dose. He was experiencing
shortness of breath 3-4 times a week and felt like he
was unable to participate in sport activities.
He explained that he does not take his reliever prior to
activity at school because he thought that his spacer
was too large and embarrassing.
Kara from AFWA’s Health Services department explained
that regular preventer use is important and offered an
alternate option of using another style of spacer when
at school and Ben agreed to continue using the larger
spacer at home. Ben agreed that he would take his
puffer prior to sport with a smaller spacer if provided.
Ben’s mother was also encouraged to discuss Ben’s
asthma with Ben’s teacher and the School and to
provide them with an Asthma Action Plan.
When Kara followed up she was pleased to find that
Ben now has daily adherence, uses a spacer and carries
a reliever. Due to the transparent communication from
Ben’s mum, he is able to go on school camp and join the
local football club. The football club has even requested
a free Live Well With Asthma session with AFWA as
they have seen the difference that the education
has made.
7

Tony’s story
Tony’s adult onset asthma was significantly affecting his
quality of life, as he was having daily asthma symptoms
and was recently hospitalized.
Tony booked into one of AFWA’s asthma education
sessions as he needed to understand his asthma and
needed to get his asthma under control.
A main focus point of the session was the role his
medication played in managing his asthma. A better
understanding of each of his medications allowed
Tony to also understand the importance of taking his
preventer as prescribed.
Tony didn’t have an Asthma Action Plan and had not
been aware of spacers. After discussing the benefits
and demonstrating how to use a spacer, it was the
next thing added to his shopping list. He also made
sure to book in an appointment with his GP to obtain
an Asthma Action Plan. When followed up, Tony was
using a spacer and managing his asthma well. His
asthma had never been better and it was life-changing.
His symptoms had reduced and his quality of life had
significantly improved.
Why do I need to use a spacer?
A spacer allows for more of the medicine to get into
the lungs so it works better, requires less coordination
and can reduce side effects from medication.
YOUR SPACER
QUESTIONS...
Are spacers just for children?
No, a spacer is recommended for anyone using a puffer.
Small children may need to use a mask with a spacer.
Do I need to wash a spacer?
Yes, a spacer needs to be washed regularly. It is
recommended to wash your spacer before you use it
for the first time and then every month. Wash your
spacer in warm soapy water, do not rinse it and leave
it to air dry.
Where can I get a spacer from?
A spacer can be purchased from a pharmacy
or from Asthma Foundation WA’s online shop
www.asthmafoundationwashop.org. Spacers come
in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours and can vary
in cost. Smaller spacers can be used by children and
adults. Some spacers have features such as whistles to
ensure they are being used correctly.
You can ask your doctor or pharmacist to check you are using your spacer correctly or watch the
how to videos on our website:
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Above: James Gonzales at the Great Southern Grammar rideathon in March that raised over $1500 for AFWA, in
memory of his childhood best mate Bill, whose family and friends rode in the 2016 ECU Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma.
James/Bill’s Bikers
James lost his best mate Bill to asthma
and doesn’t want that to happen to
anyone else. As Captain of Boarding
at Great Southern Grammar in
Albany, James couldn’t come up for
the ECU Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma but still wanted
to do something. So instead he organised an all-night
Ride-A-Thon at his school. “Bill was only 9 years old
when he passed away and he was my closest friend.
Please help me in donating to AFWA and help people
like Bill breathe and don’t have to go through the
heartache that his family went through,” James said.
10 student teams took part in the overnight ride-a-thon
from 5pm straight through until 8am the next morning.
Kids dressed in costume, rode for at least 3 hours each
in shifts, enjoyed an outdoor cinema, and camped
overnight on the school’s grounds. Altogether they
rode 4500km with James himself riding over 280km.
The Ride-A-Thon was a fabulous event and raised over
$1,500 for the Asthma Foundation WA. Well done
James and everyone at Great Southern Grammar!
FLOREAT
The Asthma Foundation WA extends it’s appreciation to Coles,
Floreat for their generous support in supplying the hot dogs for
AFWA’s fundraising sausage sizzle at the 2016 Western Force Fan
Day. Coles Floreat’s Store Manager, Mr Matt Alcock, kindly provided
all the sausages, buns, sauces and diced onions for the event. We
really appreciate his and Coles’ support!
DID YOU MISS OUT
ON THE BIKE HIKE?
Did you miss out on the Bike Hike but still want to help
the cause?
You can fundraise all year round! There are plenty of challenge events—like Run for a Reason, the Rottnest
Channel Swim, or City to Surf, just to name a few—or you can create your own event. Anything fun can be a
great way to raise awareness and donations for asthma, like a free dress day at school or hosting a theme party.
MANAGE MY ASTHMA PROGRESS
In 2016, the Asthma Foundation WA is excited to
launch Phase II of the Manage My Asthma public
awareness campaign to teach asthma management to
children with asthma and their carers.
The campaign delivers three key messages in a
child-friendly way:
1. Identification of asthma triggers
2. The importance of adhering to preventative
medication
3. Asthma control techniques
Generously funded by the Channel 7 Telethon Trust, in
2015 the campaign was created to raise awareness of
asthma and build asthma management skills for children
and their carers. A suite of educational videos were
developed and a children’s character named Puff the
Dragon, a high-profile brand personality representing
children with asthma, was born to deliver the campaign
message to kids. Puff has already made an appearance
in Perth at the 2015 Telethon Beneficiaries Expo and
will be out and about a lot more in 2016.
into the current educational sessions particularly at
Live Well With Asthma presentations targeting family
audiences and reinvigorating the school education
program for students, parents and teachers.
Puff will make special appearances at school events
and a collection of age-appropriate student sessions
will be created utilising Puff, his adventures and key
messages educating all students on the importance of
asthma management. Students will be able to find out
more information at the Manage My Asthma website
and be further engaged through a new Kids Club. This
club will be available to kids all over WA. There will be
ongoing communication through the club’s website and
by mail, which will reinforce the asthma management
message and also provide kids with asthma a sense of
belonging.
We look forward to introducing Puff to more kids
around WA, improving asthma management, and
helping kids with asthma live healthier and fuller lives!
For phase II, the Manage My Asthma campaign will be
promoted throughout WA and the campaign videos will
be shown on TV. The videos will also be incorporated
