7 Aktive Annual Report 2014/2015 MESSAGE FROM AUCKLAND COUNCIL He pānui nō te Kaunihera ō Tāmaki Makaurau More people from more places are choosing to make Auckland their home – and our region is becoming more liveable, vibrant, diverse and successful. In the last year 37,000 new jobs were created and our GDP grew by 3.7 per cent. But Auckland’s growth is also presenting big challenges – including a congested transport network, a shortfall in housing and gaps in infrastructure including parks, sport and recreation. Over the last year we’ve tackled many of these pressures, however we cannot do it alone. We are fortunate to have partners such as Aktive, Sport New Zealand and the wider sport sector. Auckland Council has a role in providing great places and spaces to be active. Across Auckland in 2014/15 we purchased 629 hectares of land to add to our parks and recreation network and delivered $110m in parks, sport and recreation infrastructure. We also worked across areas of service to improve liveability in our local communities. One such example is Tōia in Otahuhu, a $30m community precinct that caters for the mind, body and soul by bringing together the new library, pool and recreation center with exterior landscaping that includes activation spaces for street ball, play, civic and cultural activities. At the heart of delivering a liveable Auckland are great partnerships with lead agencies like Aktive. We warmly congratulate Chair Raewyn Lovett, the Board, CEO Sarah Sandley and the Aktive team on a very successful 2014/15. Working together we achieve more. MESSAGE FROM SPORT NEW ZEALAND He pānui nō Sport New Zealand With the largest and most diverse population base in New Zealand the Auckland region offers a raft of unique opportunities and challenges in the sport and recreation space, which Aktive – Auckland Sport & Recreation, now in its second year of existence, is in a strong position to tackle head on. But in this complex environment, Sport New Zealand appreciates the effective leadership of the Aktive board, chaired by Raewyn Lovett, and the management team lead by CEO Sarah Sandley. Aktive has a crucial role to play in building connections across the sport and recreation sector in the Auckland region. From these connections Sport New Zealand wants to see more people getting out and being active and developing a life-long love of sport, which will also build a foundation from which we can identify and develop athletes ready to take on the world and be our heroes of the future.
