housing the hives and nurturing the bees. We will be 

harvesting honey for sale, right at Wesley Clover

DID you know that KRP has over 500 acres 

of property to manage and includes green 

space of all types including lakes, ponds, 

and forest? When it’s time to get away from the 

office to recharge, the KRP tenants have the Trillium 

Woods and the Monk Environmental Park only steps 

away. Outdoor enthusiasts use these splendid 

spaces every day for walking, skiing, snowshoeing, 

cycling, picnicking and other recreational purposes. 

And did you also know that working close to parks and other 

green space is essential to our physical, psychological 

and social well-being? A recent review of research 

studies into the effects of trees and parklands undertaken 

by Professor Frances Kuo from the University of Illinois 

confirms that nature calms and helps us rejuvenate, 

lead happier healthier lives and enjoy better health 

because of our proximity to accessible green space. 

Most of us live in the urban landscape, where the 

trees and shrubbery of our public spaces and private 

properties are, in day-to-day life, our deepest connection 

to nature. At KRP we don’t take our proximity to 

these green spaces for granted, and we know it is our 

responsibility to manage them for our mutual benefit. 

Over the next five years, as Earth Day moves closer to 

its 50th anniversary, we’re all being called upon to help 

achieve one of the movements’ most ambitious goals 

yet-to plant 7.8 billion trees! The countdown has begun. 

To do our part in meeting this ambitious goal, 

KRP will plant one tree on our property for 

every person who attends our Clean Sweep 

event on Earth Day and donates their obsolete 

electronics and other items for reuse and recycling. 

Tree planting seems like such a low-tech, simple 

notion at a time when there is so much focus on 

electric and hybrid cars, new solar technology and 

emissions trading. But the reality is, restoring our 

forests remains the most affordable, health-promoting 

and regenerative solution to climate change. 

The KRP Forest Management Plan includes a 

commitment to optimize the amount of tree cover and 

maintain our tree inventory, to establish and maintain 

species diversity, and to optimize the age of the 

inventory in order to promote the conservation of the 

tree resources. KRP ensures that the most suitable 

tree species are planted in areas where the conditions 

are optimal for their health and long term survival. 

We know our efforts are worth it and are paying off. Trees 

absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. 

One acre of mature trees absorbs the amount of CO2 

producing by driving the average car 26,000 miles. Trees 

help us breathe clean air. And trees help our community 

achieve long term economic and environmental 

sustainability and provide food, energy and income.

JOIN us for our EARTH DAY - CLEAN SWEEP 

initiative at KRP Properties this year! 

The event is scheduled for Friday, April 22nd from 

8am – 1pm to mark Earth Day’s 25th anniversary. 

The purpose of the event is to encourage the Kanata 

North community to purge their offices and homes 

of any unused/unwanted materials to declutter 

their space. The central drop-off location for these 

items is The Community Hub, located on Legget 

Drive across from QNX (behind 400 March Road). 

The organizations that will be participating at the event 

include; 

•Foxy Recycle collecting electronic donations and waste 

•Matthew House collecting furniture donations 

•Scouts Canada collecting bicycle donations 

•Big Brother, Big Sister collecting clothing donations 

•Kanata Food Cupboard collecting canned food donations

plant a young tree in the Park on 

behalf of everyone who comes to 

donate an item to follow the theme of Earth Day this 

year; “Rooting4Trees” with the goal to plant 25,000 trees! 

Additionally, indoors at 555 Legget Drive from 9am – 

3pm, we have invited local businesses to come set up 

“a green fair” providing information to raise awareness 

on some of the environmentally friendly products on the 

market today and some of the events going on in the 

city this summer with the same environmental initiative.

SUPPORTING RENEWABLE ENERGY WITH BULLFROG POWER 

DID you know KRP Properties chooses green, 

renewable energy with Bullfrog Power? Since 

2008, we’ve bullfrogpowered our building 

common areas with 100 per cent green electricity. 

How does it work? Bullfrog’s producers put green 

electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional 

power the common areas use. In other words, Bullfrog 

ensures the power going onto our energy systems for 

our common areas is coming from renewable sources. 

Bullfrog’s green electricity comes from a blend 

of wind and low-impact hydro power from new 

Canadian renewable energy facilities, with at least 

50 per cent coming directly from our region. 

Our partnership with Bullfrog also enables KRP 

Properties to support new, community-based green 

energy projects across Canada – like solar panels on 

schools, community centres and renewable energy 

projects with First Nations groups. Just a couple 

examples of community projects in Ottawa we’ve 

helped support are OREC (Ottawa Renewable Energy 

Co-op) and SolarShare, a not-for-profit co-operative 

developing solar power projects across Ontario.

How long have you been working with KRP 

Properties? 

1.5 years 

Describe your role. 

My role is a support role for the Property Management 

team as well as the other departments in our organization. 

I manage operations for HVAC and building systems. I 

mentor the maintenance staff and am the first point of 

contact for any building related issue. I have put a lot of 

focus on energy savings, reducing our carbon footprint 

and increasing the lifespan of our equipment. Overall, 

my main objective every day is to ensure tenants 

have a safe and comfortable working environment. 

What has been your most memorable moment at 

KRP Properties? 

After working for KRP for 4 days, we participated 

in the ALS Ice Bucket challenge as a group and 

I remember when the backhoe of freezing cold 

water dumped on us, I opened my eyes and I was 

the last man standing, drenched from head to toe. 

What is KRPGreen? 

KRPGreen is the revitalization and sustainability of all 

our buildings campus-wide. 

What would you like to tell all KRP tenants 

that they might not already know about KRP’s 

sustainability initiatives?

We are a 22nd century company – we’re ahead of the 

game. The KRPGreen plan will not be a document that 

sits on a shelf to collect dust. The plan is 100% custom 

and unique to KRP and will dictate how we progress 

as a company and will impact and benefit everyone. 

What do you consider your greatest 

achievement? 

Closing out at 170 in a dart tournament. :) 

Taking one of our worst running and performing buildings 

and by implementing a brand new building automated 

system, we turned it around and now it’s our success 

story building. Hydro Ottawa even recognized the

SYNTRONIC Research and Development Canada 

is an engineering design house specializing in the 

design and development of products/solutions and 

test systems, including electronics, electro-mechanics, and 

technical and administrative software. They help customers 

in a variety of markets such as telecom, defence, med-tech, 

industrial and transportation. They have over 550 employees 

worldwide and have successfully completed over 2000

SPOTLIGHT | SYNOPSYS INC. 

IN November of 2015 a new tenant moved into KRP 

Properties, without actually moving anything in or 

out! Synopsys Inc, a multi-billion dollar California 

company specializing in hardware and software design 

tools, acquired Protecode Inc, an Ottawa software 

company that was growing its customers and revenues 

at a dizzying pace in the preceding years. Synopsys 

Software Integrity Group (SIG) now includes quality 

analysis solutions (through acquisition of Coverity), 

security vulnerability detection and mitigation solutions 

(Through acquisition of Codenomicon) and now Software 

Composition Analysis (through acquisition of Protecode). 

Protecode’s humble beginnings started in 2008 in 

what was at the time the incubation facilities of CRC 

(Communications Research Center) at Shirley’s Bay. 

The business premise that drove their technology was 

simple. Adoption of open source software was growing 

rapidly within the software organizations. Business 

customers of these organizations were asking for a list 

of all third party (including open source) content in their 

products, and manually tracking the external code was 

not viable. At the same time, the pressures on minimizing 

the development cost and reducing development 

timelines forced more and more companies to leverage 

open source technologies in their offerings. Companies 

recognized the value of open source software but needed 

solutions to manage the adoption of open source. 

Protecode’s solution was around a database that over 

time contained more than a billion public-domain software 

files. Protecode products then used the database (called 

Global IP Signatures or GIPS database) to find similarities 

between code portfolios and the content of this database. 

Protecode, now a Synopsys company, offers software 

products and services that discover open source 

and other third party content in any code portfolio, 

highlighting licensing legal obligations, identifying 

security vulnerabilities, IP ownership, export control 

restrictions and quality attributes of the external code. 

Both products and services are offered under the brand 

name Protecode. Products are currently deployed 

globally in organizations as large as 400,000 and as 

small as 10 employees. Protecode Certified Audit® 

service has helped hundreds of companies that have 

been going through an M&A or investment transaction 

worldwide, identifying presence of third party components 

in their code portfolio, and highlighting IP ownership, 

licensing obligations, and security vulnerabilities. 

The Protecode team is staying in Ottawa and in fact 

growing. After the acquisition by Synopsys, there has 

been a push to expand the research and development 

activities in Ottawa. Protecode products essentially 

deploy Big Data methodologies, and hence they 

are currently hiring talents in data mining, statistical 

software methods, and big data presentation.
