High School recipient of the<br />

Dean Bank / WMRC Radio<br />

Student Leadership Award. Sydney,<br />

a junior at <strong>Hopedale</strong> High<br />

School, has a cumulative GPA of<br />

4.17 and is enrolled in 6 honors<br />

classes and a member of Tri-M.<br />

She was just inducted into the<br />

National Honor Society. Sydney<br />

also holds an internship with the<br />

HHS Drama Club where she<br />

manages the painting and design<br />

of the stage sets. Lastly, she also<br />

helps coordinate and announce<br />

the morning school announcements.<br />

busy volunteering with her Girl<br />

Scout troop which she has been<br />

a part of since Kindergarten, including<br />

participating in pancake<br />

breakfasts, Christmas caroling,<br />

children’s workshops and other<br />

community service. A very special<br />

volunteer service that Sydney<br />

provides is personally answering<br />

children’s letters to Santa<br />

in <strong>Hopedale</strong>. Without this, the<br />

children’s letters would go unanswered.<br />

Glen K. Goodman, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director and President of the Goodman Eye Medical<br />

& Surgical Center, is pleased to announce that his practice has been selected for the<br />

<strong>2016</strong> Best of Milford Award in the Doctors category by the Milford Award Program.<br />

The Milford Award Program is an annual awards program honoring the achievements<br />

and accomplishments of local physicians throughout the Milford area. Recognition<br />

is given to those physicians who have shown the ability to use best practices and<br />

implemented programs to generate competitive advantages and long-term value to<br />

their patients.<br />

Each year, the Milford Award Program identifies physicians whom have achieved<br />

exceptional success in their local community. These are local physicians whom<br />

enhance the positive image of small businesses throughout their service area to their<br />

patients and to their community. These exceptional recipients help make the Milford<br />

area a great place to live, work and play.<br />

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the recipients.<br />

The <strong>2016</strong> Milford Award Program focuses on quality, not quantity. Winners are<br />

determined based on the information gathered both internally by the Milford Award<br />

Program and by data provided by third parties.<br />

The Goodman Eye Medical & Surgical Center is about to celebrate it’s 7th year at its<br />

145 West Street location. Dr. Goodman, a Wrentham native and current resident, is very<br />

proud of the accomplishments achieved during this time. The Cataract Surgery Center<br />

On Tuesday, May 10, 22<br />

students were inducted into the<br />

Francis I Wallace Chapter of<br />

<strong>Hopedale</strong> Jr/Sr High School<br />

National Honor Society. During<br />

the ceremony, the new inductees<br />

were reminded by Treasurer<br />

Trevor Wilson that “A scholar is<br />

excited by the fact that what they<br />

learn today is not the same as yesterday”.<br />

Member Charles Hockenbury<br />

talked about service. He<br />

explained to them why they were<br />

eligible for the nomination. “You<br />

are here because you understand<br />

what service means. You are<br />

not the ones who respond when<br />

they are called; rather, you are<br />

the ones who volunteer before<br />

asked. You do not serve the community<br />

because of some reward<br />

or as a chore; you serve to serve,<br />

do good because it is good, seeking<br />

no repayment.”<br />

Vice President Molly McMahon<br />

said “the most important element<br />

of character is being this<br />

ideal person no matter where<br />

or who is watching.” The final<br />

pillar that was addressed in the<br />

speeches was leadership. Secretary<br />

Jenn Chiarello asked them<br />

to reflect on what they do and<br />

who they are. “Can you walk<br />

up to the “popular kid” and tell<br />

them that it’s not funny, and it<br />

never has been funny to make<br />

remarks at the expense of teachers<br />

or their peers. I challenge you<br />

to become THAT type of leader,<br />

your actions may not always be<br />

noticed, but they will impact so<br />

many people.”<br />

Program. Reading Buddies is a<br />

6-week program that pairs older<br />

students with beginning readers<br />

for an hour each week to read to<br />

each other. The program is an<br />

excellent volunteer opportunity,<br />

as well as lots of fun! Interested<br />

students are required to attend a<br />

training session on Wednesday<br />

<strong>June</strong> 22nd at 3 PM in the Library<br />

Program Room. Students who<br />

would like to volunteer for other<br />

summer activities are also encouraged<br />

treating many eye problems.<br />

From helping patients eliminate<br />

the need for glasses to cosmetic<br />

procedures of the eyelids, lasers<br />

have been very valuable in performing<br />

bladeless eye surgery<br />

while producing precise and safe<br />

outcomes.<br />

The world of eye surgery was<br />

revolutionized when in 1946, a<br />

German Ophthalmologist used<br />

the first laser to treat the retina.<br />

Laser is light amplified by stimulated<br />

emission of radiation. This<br />

produces photons acting in synchrony,<br />

with high power and<br />

precision. Health Risks from the<br />

Use of Laser Pointers<br />

Lasers can be very helpful as<br />

a bladeless surgical device, but a<br />

note of caution: Laser pointers<br />

in hand-held, pen-like devices<br />

that project a beam of laser light<br />

are rapidly replacing the traditional<br />

wooden pointers used by<br />

lecturers during presentations.<br />

However, these pointers can be<br />

misused, for example, by students<br />

in classrooms or by children at<br />

home, and this has generated<br />

at a laser pointer and never point<br />

it at someone. Serious eye injury<br />

(sometimes permanent) can result.<br />

Laser Use in Diabetes<br />

In some cases of diabetic eye<br />

disease, small blebs can form on<br />

the blood vessels of the retina.<br />

These can later cause bleeding<br />

and blurry vision. An Argon<br />

Laser Use in Glaucoma<br />

The laser can be used in a focused<br />

beam of light to treat the<br />

drainage angle of the eye. This<br />

surgery makes it easier for fluid<br />

to flow out of the front part of<br />

the eye, decreasing pressure in the<br />

eye. Two types of laser eye surgery<br />

exist to open up the drainage<br />

angle of the eye: Argon laser<br />

trabeculoplasty and selective laser<br />

trabeculoplasty.<br />

Laser Use in After<br />

Cataract Surgery<br />

The lens capsule is the thin<br />

bag that holds the intraocular lens<br />

implant in position after cataract<br />

surgery. This capsule becomes<br />

clouded in about 25% of cataract<br />

surgery patients. This causes<br />

blurry vision and is also known as<br />

secondary cataract. A YAG laser<br />

can create a small opening in the<br />

center of the capsule, allowing<br />

light to enter the eye through a<br />

An excimer laser can be used<br />

to correct a variety of refractive<br />

errors of the eye, from nearsightedness<br />

to farsightedness and<br />

extremely precise. It creates targeted<br />

removal of tissue to reshape<br />

the cornea, which reorients the<br />

light in the correct place inside<br />

the eye.<br />

Laser Use in Cosmetic Eye<br />

Lid Surgery<br />

Eye lid surgery, also known<br />

as blepharoplasty, is designed to<br />

rejuvenate baggy or droopy eyelids<br />

and to restore youthful eyes.<br />

The laser provides excellent precision<br />

for this procedure. Since<br />

the laser seals small blood vessels,<br />

there is very little bleeding during<br />

surgery. As a result, bruising and<br />

swelling are kept to a minimum<br />

and recovery is fast.<br />

<strong>Hopedale</strong> Girls Tennis Team Young and Strong<br />

The 2013 and 2014 season<br />

ended with loses in the Division<br />

3 Central Semi Finals, but last<br />

year the Blue Raiders girl’s tennis<br />

team took it further and captured<br />

the Championship before<br />

eventually losing to Martha’s<br />

Vineyard in the Division 3 State<br />

Finals. <strong>Hopedale</strong>, which finished<br />

the regular season with a 15-3<br />

record and earned a two seed,<br />

defeated Leicester, Grafton and<br />

Notre Dame Academy en route<br />

to the Division 3 Central Title.<br />

The squad then went on to defeat<br />

Lenox before falling in the<br />

Championship contest.<br />

Having lost 3 of their 7 starters<br />

from that team <strong>Hopedale</strong><br />

Coach Amy Wersted is entering<br />

the season with its oldest player<br />

being a sophomore. The Blue<br />

Raiders will suit up 6 sophomores,<br />

2 freshmen, 4 eighth<br />

graders and 4 seventh graders<br />

this spring. While the sophomores<br />

will be entering their<br />

fourth season with the team, they<br />

still find themselves a little behind<br />

in terms of talent.<br />

“These girls love the sport of<br />

tennis and have been on the team<br />

for four years now,” Wersted<br />

said. “Unfortunately they are still<br />

somewhat small and petite and<br />

while facing upper classmen they<br />

are standing up for themselves.”<br />

Freshman Aimee Figgins, who<br />

is playing in her third season with<br />

the Blue Raiders and her second<br />

at number one singles, is looking<br />

to improve upon last year’s performance.<br />

“As an eighth graders she<br />

made it to the round of eight and<br />

I’m hoping that she can go a lot<br />

further this year,” Wersted said.<br />

“In the past she has had to use<br />

two hands on her forehand, this<br />

year she is using only one. She<br />

has also grown a little taller, but<br />

is still small in stature.”<br />

At the time of this writing the<br />

freshman currently held a 4-1<br />

record with her one loss being a<br />

5 ½ hour marathon with an upperclassman.<br />

Captain Megan McLellan, a<br />

fourth year player and a sophomore<br />

this year, will be holding<br />

down the number two singles position<br />

for <strong>Hopedale</strong>. As a seventh<br />

grader McLellan was involved in<br />

a varsity playoff match. Rounding<br />

out the singles circuit will be<br />

another sophomore in Brittany<br />

Dupuis, <strong>Hopedale</strong>’s Rookie of<br />

the Year last spring.<br />

Further down the court<br />

sophomore captain Jennie Holland<br />

will be teamed with eighth<br />

grader Maddie Laprade playing<br />

first doubles. The duo finds<br />

themselves with a 3-1 record thus<br />

far and seemed to have meshed<br />

quite nicely.<br />

“Maddie is a volleyball player<br />

that brings a spike serve with her<br />

and is much more aggressive at<br />

the net,” the coach said. “Jennie’s<br />

not that tall at 4’10”, but has a<br />

great backhand and a wonderful<br />

spin serve that is hard to return.<br />

She also moves well around the<br />

court and is able to cove a lot of<br />

ground.”<br />

seven are close friends sophomores<br />

Although still early <strong>Hopedale</strong><br />

is currently undefeated in<br />

the Dual Valley Conference and<br />

looking to once again make the<br />

Division 3 Central Tournament.<br />

And despite being a rather young<br />

team Wersted likes her chances<br />

they way they’ve played so far.<br />

“Being a doubles player I tend<br />

to gravitate toward the doubles<br />

teams, especially since we lost<br />

all of our doubles players from<br />

a year ago,” the coach said. “I’m<br />

not really worried about our single<br />

players; they’re all competitive<br />

and know what needs to be<br />

done to be successful.”<br />

<strong>Hopedale</strong> is hoping to continue<br />

to have success as the season<br />

progresses forward while<br />

once again capturing the Sectional<br />

Championships and then<br />

finishing what they could last<br />

year – winning a State Championship.<br />

New Coach Striving To Elevate<br />

Girls Lacrosse At <strong>Hopedale</strong><br />

Kristine Vincuilla’s primary<br />

goal in her first year as <strong>Hopedale</strong><br />

High’s girls lacrosse coach was to<br />

take the four-year old program<br />

to the next level. That translated<br />

to surpassing .500 and qualifying<br />

for a berth in the district tournament.<br />

That objective no doubt was<br />

a major challenge but the Blue<br />

Raiders have displayed true<br />

grit and a relentless work ethic<br />

in spite of being an exceptionally<br />

young team and having a<br />

2-8 record that dampens their<br />

hopes for post-season play. When<br />

<strong>Hopedale</strong> started girls lacrosse in<br />

2013, the team played a jayvee<br />

schedule and finished at 4-4. The<br />

first year of varsity competition<br />

ended with the squad going 2-18<br />

but last year the girls took some<br />

giant strides and finished with a<br />

respectable 8-11 record.<br />

Caitlin McInnis coached<br />

those teams but had to step<br />

down and relocate to Pennsylvania<br />

when her husband’s work<br />

involved a move. Vincuilla, who<br />

played lacrosse for four years at<br />

Hopkinton High and for a season<br />

at UMass-Amherst, took the<br />

reins and has worked diligently<br />

to keep the program moving forward.<br />

“What’s important is that the<br />

players keep improving, continue<br />

to strengthen their skills, use their<br />

non-dominant hand effectively<br />

and remain passionate about the<br />

game,’’ Vincuilla emphasized.<br />

“The keys are to develop team<br />

chemistry, ensure good communication<br />

and strive to excel as a<br />

unit. I inherited a young team<br />

but it has speed, athleticism and<br />

technical ability. We lack depth<br />

but the girls have some experience.<br />

We knew that topping .500<br />

was a lofty goal but the girls will<br />

continue to work and achieve<br />

that goal in the future.’’<br />

Vail, and eighth- grader Zoe<br />

Athanasopoulos have played<br />

admirably on offense. On the<br />

defensive side, sophomores Cassidy<br />

Adams and Morgan Foley,<br />

freshman Carly Gatewood, and<br />

eighth-grader Grace Hevey are<br />

improving. The goalies include<br />

eighth-graders Madison Duprey<br />

(on jayvees last year) and Olivia<br />

Hurley (new to playing in goal).<br />

“Our offensive players are<br />

hard-working, motivated and<br />

relentless,’’ Vincuilla said. “Our<br />

defensive players have great passion,<br />

communicate well, and are<br />

striving to learn and improve.<br />

Both goaltenders have stepped<br />

up and have adapted to playing<br />

goal on the varsity very well.<br />

Madison is confident and has<br />

a good presence and Olivia is<br />

learning quickly and giving a<br />

solid effort.’’<br />

<strong>Hopedale</strong> competes in the<br />

Mid Mass. League, which includes<br />

Nipmuc, Northbridge,<br />

Tantasqua and Grafton. And,<br />

Vinciulla is acutely aware that all<br />

of those squads have to be taken<br />

seriously. “To be successful in the<br />

conference means giving 100<br />

percent,’’ she said. “They’re all<br />

formidable teams that present a<br />

challenge.’’<br />

The 25-year-old Vincuilla<br />

knew she’d need some time to<br />

adjust to her first varsity coaching<br />

post. Her only previous coaching<br />

experience was as a volunteer<br />

assistant with the Dean College<br />

women’s team.<br />

“My transition has been<br />

helped by having Sheila Hevey<br />

on board as our jayvee coach,’’<br />

Vincuilla said. “Also, Eric<br />

Moxim, the boys coach, has been<br />

very helpful. The challenges for<br />

me are learning the players’<br />

strengths and where they belong<br />

on the field. Formulating quality<br />

offensive and defensive units<br />

is important and knowing how<br />

certain girls complement one another<br />

also is crucial.’’<br />

Vincuilla started playing lacrosse<br />

as a sixth-grader in middle<br />

school before competing as a<br />

midfielder and defender during<br />

her career at Hopkinton. Her<br />

playing days at UMass-Amherst<br />

didn’t last long because she had<br />

three surgeries to repair ligament<br />

damage in her knee. After<br />

getting her degree in psychology,<br />

she worked on a masters in<br />

school counseling at Assumption<br />

College. Currently, she works at<br />

Dean College as an academic adviser<br />

and career coordinator.<br />

Hired in early March, Vincuilla<br />

said she’s ecstatic about<br />

being on the staff at <strong>Hopedale</strong>.<br />

“What impresses me are the players,’’<br />

she noted. “There’s a nice<br />

mix of youth and experience and<br />

I could sense the atmosphere was<br />

totally positive.’’<br />

Vincuilla’s squad may not be<br />

tourney-bound but that doesn’t<br />

detract from the program’s future.<br />

She’s a coach who believes<br />

in drilling the basics — defense<br />

and passing — and developing<br />

a strong offense. “For a team to<br />

have success, its players have to<br />

possess athleticism,’’ she emphasized.<br />

“But, players also need to<br />

be thinking about strategy during<br />

the entire game. They go handin-hand.<br />

Lacrosse is a complex<br />

sport that demands a lot of those<br />

who play it.’’<br />

<strong>Hopedale</strong>’s program has<br />

struggled but it’s still growing,<br />

still striving to elevate itself. And,<br />

although it’s taking time, Kristine<br />

Vincuilla seems like a solid<br />

choice to guide the Blue Raiders<br />

to the next level.<br />
