LOUGH CARRA<br />
COVERING 1,560 hectares, Carra is<br />
Ireland’s largest marl lake and is part of the Great<br />
Western Lakes complex. The islands and ragged<br />
shoreline make for interesting fishing. Sadly,<br />
modern intensive agriculture caused a significant<br />
decline in the quality of the trout fishing but the wild<br />
browns are still free rising and there’s plenty of pike<br />
too. The Lough Carra Trout Anglers hold regular<br />
competitions.<br />
LEIGHTON RESERVOIR<br />
EXPOSED and large at 105 acres with<br />
depths over 100 feet in places, but bank-only<br />
Leighton attracts regulars in search of large<br />
rainbows and browns often well into doublefigures.<br />
Located at Masham, Wensleydale,<br />
Yorkshire and surrounded by stunning scenery,<br />
you’ll need exact change because the fishing<br />
hut runs an envelope system. Lodge, toilet,<br />
parking and disabled facilities.<br />

BLAKEWELL TROUT FISHERY<br />
ARGUABLY Devon’s premier small water<br />
which also has its own fish farm and water<br />
garden centre. The 30-year-old established<br />
5-acre lake has varying depths and bays.<br />
Fully finned trout stocked from 2lb to 21lb –<br />
kill tickets only. Farm shop, family fishing,<br />
hot food and refreshments. Current record is<br />
22lb 13oz rainbow, brown 13lb 2oz.<br />

PENNINE TROUT FARM<br />
& FISHERY<br />
WITH one of the finest views a fishery could<br />
wish for, this valley side water in the Lancashire<br />
Pennines is immaculately maintained<br />
throughout. Two spring-fed lakes total five acres,<br />
with depths to 13m. Rainbows and browns from<br />
2lb to 20lb plus are stocked, the record catch<br />
being 29lb. Tackle for sale or hire, hot and cold<br />
snacks, licensed restaurant.<br />

TENTERDEN<br />
TROUT <strong>WATERS</strong><br />
THIS Kent venue was one of the first stillwater<br />
fisheries in South East England, and it enjoys<br />
an excellent reputation. Three lakes totalling<br />
5.5 acres are stocked regularly with rainbows<br />
and browns from 2lb to 12lb. Caught fish go in<br />
bankside retainer baskets and anglers select<br />
their limit at the end of the session, with all<br />
other fish returned. Release option.<br />
